How does your media product represent different social
1. How does your media product
represent different social groups?
2. What social groups have I
represented?
• I feel my magazine represents quite a gangster
style social group on the contents and cover
page, with the Double Page Spread (DPS)
being a more glamour-girl social group.
3. Representing ‘Gangsta’ on the cover
• I think one way how I have achieved this representation is through the
masthead. The content of the masthead (the word ‘Moosik’) is often
associated with how they pronounce the word ‘Music’ thus
representing the social group. Also based on my research from ‘The
Source’ who does represent the same social group, the font choice on
my masthead represents them because it is appealing to them.
• I don’t think this is a negative representation because it isn’t suggesting
anything bad about them, but I don’t feel it’s a positive representation
either because it’s not suggesting anything positive about them either.
4. Representing ‘Gangsta’ on the cover
• The photo on the front cover represents them
in three different ways. The first is the look on
her face- she looks quite intimidating and
intimidation is common of ‘Gangsta’s’ and
gangs. The second is through mise-en-scene,
the fur clothing is clothing associated with
‘Gangsta’s’ and the third is the backdrop. An
unclean brick wall is something else
commonly associated with ‘Gangstas’.
• In some ways this is a negative representation
of them. The intimidating look suggests a
threat and this could threaten the public into
not buying and could also cause them to think
that ‘Gangsta’s’ are violent intimidating
people because of how their represented
here.
5. Representing ‘Gangsta’ on the
contents
• The only representation of ‘Gangsta’
on the contents is the photo and this
is through a Mise-En-Scene element
of the photo. The location of the
photo is outside a prison and this is a
common connotation of Gangsters
thus representing them.
• This is a negative representation
because prison is a negative place
and it makes the social group look
like they’ve committed crime
because the location is prison.
6. Representing ‘Glamour Girl’ on the
DPS
• One of the ways this social group is represented
on the DPS is the font on ‘Pretty Little’. The font
choice connotes this type of woman, but also the
colour pink is the main colour associated with
this type of woman.
• This isn’t a positive or negative representation
because it’s not suggesting anything good or bad.
7. Representing ‘Glamour Girl’ on the
DPS
• Another way how this is
represented is through mise-en-
scene in the photo. The location
is the studio and this is
considered a glamour girl thing
to do- for them to have their
own studio shoot.
• This can be interpreted in a
negative way as it suggests a
vein persona because they want
lots of photo’s of themselves
taken which is quite vein.
