1. Young Generation:
On type of social group my final opening would represent would be young males this is because our
main character is a male. A way in which this represents this social group would be the fact that he is
quite obsessed with himself we show this by him working out and then making sure he looks good.
Normally men are now quite infatuated with the way their looks, so they like to watch my final
opening because it’s basically like a representation of them.
Gender:
Within our production we are focusing on the representation of a young male. The representation
males give out on psychological thrillers focus on their physically strength and how obsessed they
are with their physique. We try showing this by having shots of our main character running in a park
but also had close ups and mid shots of my main character shirtless looking at himself in the mirror
this kind shows that he is quite obsessed with the way he looks. Some ways my group and I imagined
using the representation of males as less emotional and more independent but also by following the
conventions of a psychological thriller would be by capturing some close-ups of our protagonist
wearing no facial expressions to make him look emotion less and psychotic fitting the conventions of
a psychological thriller. My group and I discussed adding a first person narrative voice over to
represent our protagonist as indeed independent by explaining his individualistic compulsive daily
schedule.
Disability:
Conventionally within psychological thriller film opening the majority of disability’s represented
within this genre are mental illnesses related. Some of the ways these stereotypes are presented to
the audience is with common themes of this genre for e.g. mind games, stalking, isolation and
having some sort of obsession.
My group and I thought about ways we could represent disabilities through the theme of obsession
being the fixation with structure, cleanliness (OCD). Methods we thought of representing our
protagonist mental illness to the audience is through capturing extreme close up of digital alarm
clocks to represent is obsession with order and structure with in daily routine. Other methods we
decided to use to represent Danny’s mental illness and his compulsive behavior is by having a first
person narrated voice over about his compulsive tendencies and his obsession with the number
three and also showing a disruption within his routine and how it affect him (through his
medication). As a collective we deliberated on the representation of isolation, as it is a common
convention used within psychological thrillers. Conventionally the Protagonist with this genre comes
across as either confident and tends to imitate human emotions to fit in with the social norms of
society or tend to isolate themselves from the rest of society to not stand out as abnormal or insane.
As a group the conventions which we have considered using to represent the idea of isolation is by
only establish the protagonist within the opening scene to give the audience a better understanding
of characters with a first person narrative hyperbolizing his compulsive but individualist lifestyle with
the consisting use of personal pronouns.
So after referring back to my research I learnt that those affected by mental disorder represented
within film openings are structured and organized where if disrupted is obvious and clearly.
2. Disorientated. From watching psychological thriller openings, TV programs and other media
platforms I am considering to use this key convention as I feel it will highlight the psychotic element
of the film opening to the audience.
Class
Within our film opening we also took representation of class in to deep consideration as within many
psychological thriller it is a common convention that the main character are from upper or middle
class background and are earning high amounts of money and also live in extravagant, luxurious
houses and neighborhoods.
Some of the techniques in which my group and I have decided to incorporate this stereotype of a
middle class young men within our film opening is by capturing several panning shot of the house
and neighborhood but also by having a well-spoken first person voice over of Danny to present and
emphasize his social class to the my target audience.
