My magazine represents college students through images on the cover and contents that students can relate to. The sans serif font makes the magazine seem modern and appeal to younger readers. While the contents provide useful information for students, they only represent stereotypical students rather than exploring a diversity of experiences. Images and articles in the contents aim to show different social groups on campus through pictures of students, transportation, and campus activities.

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

The world is being changed fundamentally by AI and we are constantly faced with newspaper headlines about its harmful effects. However, there is also the potential to both ameliorate theses harms and use the new abilities of AI to transform society for the good. Can you make the difference?
2. How does your magazine
represent different social groups?
My magazine represents my
niche market through the use of
my image on the front cover. The
subject represents a typical
student carrying a couple books
which is a familiar image to most
students who the magazine is
aimed at.
3. How does your magazine
represent different social groups?
My choice of Sans Serif font
represents the teenage and young
adult generation which my
magazine is aimed at as this style
of font makes the magazine appear
more modern and therefore is more
likely to appeal to a younger overall
audience and make the magazine
look more relatable, rather than if it
looked too formal with people in
uniforms and serif font , to my
audience.
4. How does your magazine
represent different social groups?
I also feel that the relative contents
within my magazine is almost
stereotypical of my audience as it
contains information about college
and information that students might
find difficult to come across through
an information center. This aspect
of my magazine does not explore
the wider type of student than other
articles I could have introduced.
5. How does your magazine
represent different social groups?
My magazine contents page represents
different social groups through images
and text. The top right image on my
contents page represents the typical
group of students at the college who are
friends and shows relationship groups at
college. The two transport images show
the wide range of people who travel in
order to get to college as well as the
bottom right picture shows some typical
pass time activities/ places to go that a
majority of students/ my target audience
would enjoy.
6. How does your magazine
represent different social groups?
The actual contents of the
magazine is stereotypical to most
students as it contains the basic
information most new students
would find valuable in a new
school such as opportunities,
exam advice and helplines. This
represents what is available to
students at college as well as
representing them in a similar
way.
7. How does your magazine
represent different social groups?
Finally, the border used on my final
contents page and the background
used on my front cover are the
image of a brick wall which
represents the tall building
structures of school as a whole
which is relatable to the average
student as college buildings are
mostly thought of to be made of the
red brick familiar to most buildings.
8. What aspects of your work are
you pleased with and why?
I am pleased with my sans serif
choice of font as I feel this has
added a modern feel to the
magazine making it more
appealing towards my niche
market and therefore more
relatable to the audience my
magazine is aimed at.
9. What aspects of your work are
you pleased with and why?
I like the overall composition of
my final magazine from my flat
plan designs I used. The simple
and conventional layout allows
the new magazine to begin
forming it’s brand name and
allows the reader to easily
understand what the magazine is
about.
10. What aspects of your work are
you pleased with and why?
Along with the layout and
typeface, I also like my overall
subject as they help portray a
simple student that is relatable to
a majority of people who would
read the magazine which then
helps improve overall readership
of the magazine.
11. What aspects of your work are
you pleased with and why?
I like the border I used on the
contents page which helps link
both the front cover and contents
page together making them look
like part of the same magazine
through a regular theme within the
magazine.
12. What aspects of your work are
you pleased with and why?
The amount of contents within my
magazine is of the amount you
would assume a magazine to
include if the articles themselves
are relatively small. I am pleased
with the layout of my contents as it
is easy for readers to navigate to
aspects of the magazine they are
most interested in therefore making
it more accessible to a wider market
of readers.
13. What aspects of your work are
you pleased with and why?
Finally, I am pleased with the
distribution of text and images
and how they have balanced
themselves out within my
contents page to allow the images
to firstly capture the attention of
the audience and the smaller
writing to expand on detail about
the magazine.
14. What aspects of your work could
be improved and why?
Firstly, I would plan my photo shoot
better in terms of costume and
props as my subjects clothing as
over exposed – due to it being a
white top – and therefore I was
forced to keep the picture darker so
detail was left in the clothing. To
improved I would have changed the
colour of the subjects top in order to
allow the photo to become brighter
and therefore catch the attention of
a wider audience.
15. What aspects of your work could
be improved and why?
In order to make my magazine
look more uniform and
professional I would improve the
front cover by lining up the cover
lines on a straight line so that they
become easier to read and the
cover looks better thought out
instead of having them in random
places following the curve of the
subject in the picture.
16. What aspects of your work could
be improved and why?
Because of my questionnaire, I
decided to use the three primary
colours to decorate my magazine
(red, yellow, blue) but due to my
background being fairly dark, the
blue does not fit in with the other
richer colours. Therefore I would
lighten my background to make
the text a brighter blue to improve
my magazine front cover.
17. What aspects of your work could
be improved and why?
To improve the contents page I
would plan my photo shoot ahead
better and take a separate picture
of the brick wall - I have used as a
border to link my contents page
and front cover together - so that
my subject from the front cover is
not visible behind the main
contents page, diminishing from
the overall appeal of the page.
18. What aspects of your work could
be improved and why?
In order to make the contents
page easier to read I would move
the text slightly to the right so that
they do not touch the border
around the page and look neater,
cleaner and overall easier to read.
This would also allow the writing
to flow better down the page as a
whole.
19. What aspects of your work could
be improved and why?
Finally, to make the whole
contents page look like one
complete page, I would improve
the page by editing the images to
all have the same colour balance
and brightness so that they look a
part of the whole page rather than
completely separate images
making the magazine look more
uniform and professional.
