evaluation. question 2 – how does your media product represent particular social groups? Abigail Yorke.
All of these young girls are the same age as the girls that feature in my magazine. These pictures all connote sexuality and attitude with medium close ups and sultry expressions of their faces. However, they all give off the innocent ‘girl next door’ image.
However, in my magazine the girls do not connote sexuality: it is more innocence and fun! The quirky expressions on the double page spread show that she’s cheeky and not your typical pop girl, such as Miley Cyrus.
ideology. Dominant ideology: Women should be housewives who are used as a tool to men to clean the house, have children and an object for sexual affection. Emergent ideology: The women in my magazine are working for themselves and making it on their own. They are very much about ‘girl power’ which could be represented as a loose link to feminism.
From looking at the pictures on the second slide of the girls who feature in real pop magazines, it is obvious that they fit into some aspects of dominant ideology: they are heavily made up with sexually suggestive expressions and poses. This show us that women are thought of in that way in society even through people who are meant to be idols in some peoples eyes. The shot types of most of the celebrities are medium close-ups with skin revealed and pouting/sultry expressions. This connotes sexuality and makes the girls looks irresistible. When looking at the girls that are featured in my magazine, they are much less sexual, if at all. The pose which sees the main model looking out the window is quirky in the way that she is facing away from the camera and therefore not establishing the immediate connection of eye contact. This shows that she is not attempting to be sexual because the pose she is in is not faced towards the camera and her clothes cover her up, and are not particularly girlie.
The people in my magazine are not the same social group or age as those who will be reading it. For example, the people reading the magazine would be young girls aged 9-13 who want to know all the latest gossip about their favourite celebs. However the type of people that feature in the magazine are famous girls in the music industry who are aged 16 and above. This is because the target audience want to read about people who they can aspire to be like them (famous, rich and gorgeous) but also relate to slightly because of age.
