1. Question Two.
HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR
SOCIAL GROUPS:
Younger demographic:
In my magazine, the younger age group is represented as my main
cover star is a seventeen year old female solo artist, named “Lauren
Dearden”. I have created her because my target audience is 16-30
year olds and so my main cover star had to be relatable to that age
demographic.
Throughout my article, I have written positively about Lauren,
including back stories on her family life and her close relationship
with her father, which represents her age demographic as family orientated and
down to earth. I have also represented the youth demographic as being quite determined and
hard working, through the quote “I’ve been turned down by producers so many times” yet, she
has continued to put her music forward.
Images
The mise en scene of the images I have included creates quite a positive representation of this
age group, as in the main image, she is wearing quite modern and fashionable clothing, with a
tartan dress and black bowler hat on as costume. In the main image, she is smiling which
creates quite a fun and lighthearted feel towards my magazine and for the representation of
youth. The guitar prop in the main image of the double page spread also creates the idea that
youth is talented. In the smaller images on the front cover on the left side third, features props,
such as sunglasses and hats, which creates a lighthearted representation of the youth.
Women
Usually in music magazines, women are presented in quite sexualised ways and are posed and
dressed provocatively. There are
examples of this here:
2. However, in my magazine, I wanted to present women as being strong and independent
without having to be sexually gratified and so I have perhaps challenged the gender stereotype
of women within magazines.
In my magazine, my main cover star is wearing covered up clothing yet still appears feminine
as she is wearing a dress. However, a sense of masculinity is created which challenges gender
stereotypes, as she is wearing a men’s hat and her boots are quite masculine as they appear
quite “chunky” and aren’t feminine.
