EVALUATION
Havingwatchedmycompositionseveral times,andaskingforfeedbackfrommypeers,Ifeel that
the genre of my filmhascome through duringthe shortfilm.Asmy filmwasa comedy, itwasvery
importantthatthe audience foundithumorousasthatisthe mainaimof the piece.Afterreceiving
some feedbackIhave beeninformedthatmytargetaudience foundthe filmamusingandtherefore
enjoyedthe film. Ialsothinkthatthe upbeatand funnyandmatchesthe genre of the film well.
I thinkthat throughthe shortfilmI have demonstratedawide varietyof differentshottypes. The
conversationopenswithanestablishingshot tellingthe audience where theyare andwhentheyare
there.Thisimmediately setsthe scene forthe restof the short film.Itthencuts to a longshotof the
character walkingtowardsthe cameraso the audience cansee hisfacial featuresbefore cuttingtoa
mediumhand-heldshotof himwalkingintothe building. The audience are informedthatthisperson
isa keycharacter inthe filmsince he isinthe veryopeningshotanditinstantly hooksthe audience
because theywantto knowwho exactly he is,whyhe’swalkingintothe buildingandwhatpart he
playsinthe remainderof the film.Throughoutthe rest of the short filmIhave includedshotssuchas
a highangle,lowangle,point-of-view,over-the-shoulderanda zoomshot;and togetherIthink
these shotsworkwell tokeepthe filminterestingandhelptoengage the audience inthe film.
I alsothinkthat afterlearningaboutshotreverse shots,Ihave successfullymanagedtopresentone
inmy film.Iuseda close-up,point-of-view shotshowingthe characteron one side of the doorand
thena longshot of himthe otherside havingwalkedthroughandintothe room.Aftereditingand
shorteningthe clipsIthinkIhave successfullymade the transitionfromone side tothe othersmooth
and well edited.
I thinka weaknessof myfilmisthatsome of the shotsrequiredatripodbutwasn’tused.Asevident
ina couple of the shotsinthe composition, thereisasmall amountof shakinessthathasoccurred as
a resultof holdingthe cameraby hand.Unfortunatelythis drawsthe attentionawayfromthe actual
actionin the shotand causesthe audience tofocusmore on the shakiness.
Anotherweakness,inmyopinionisthatIdidn’taddenoughsoundeffectsintothe edit.Ithinki
couldhave made the filmmore comical byadding‘gasp’soundeffects, whenthe twocharacters
were talking.IalsothinkIcouldhave addeda soundeffectatthe endwhere the female characteris
shownto addan extra piece of excitementtothe film.
If i couldrepeatthe filmingprocessof myshortfilm, i wouldconsiderusingadifferentlocationand
costumestogive a bettereffect. I perhapscouldhave shotthe conversationinahouse ratherthan
at school to suggestthatthe characterslive together, andperhapsi couldhave thoughtabout
connotationsof colourandhad the female characterinblackdue toher beingportrayedasa
negative characterforruiningthe relationship.
If I couldrepeatthe editingaspectof myfilm, I thinkI wouldchange the title andthe ‘starring’part.I
thinkthat the plainblackscreenandthe regularfontis a bitdull and doesn’trepresentthe comedy
genre well.Icouldmaybe have hadthe title appearonthe screenof the establishingshotina
fancierfont,or couldhave usedPhotoshop toeditatitle page.Ialso feel thatthe ‘starring’part
shouldhave beenshownatthe beginningof the shortfilm ratherthanthe endso that the audience
had an insightintothe actorsthat were inthe film.
In the nextfilmthati produce,i will thinkmore deeplyaboutcostume andthe connotationsof
colouras well asthe locationand howthat reflectsthe charactersinthe film.Ialsowill ensure that
SARAH POORE MEDIA STUDIES 02/10/2017
still shotsare takenwitha tripodso that there isnoshakinessevidentinthe film.Aswell asthis,i
will findnumeroussoundeffectstofindthe bestone before applyingthemtothe edit.
