2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Instructions for Submissions thorugh G- Classroom.pptxJheel Barad
This presentation provides a briefing on how to upload submissions and documents in Google Classroom. It was prepared as part of an orientation for new Sainik School in-service teacher trainees. As a training officer, my goal is to ensure that you are comfortable and proficient with this essential tool for managing assignments and fostering student engagement.
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

Websites and Online
Applications:
The websites and online applications were mainly the
things that I used to upload and present my work on. Most
of the time I would use slide share, Prezi, YouTube,
Powtoon, Emaze and Befunkey to present my work on as
they were different types of ways to present my work. I
enjoyed doing it slightly differently as it allowed me to
enjoy making my journal as it was more fun then just keep
typing it out and uploading pictures. It is also more
visually interesting and enjoyable for the outside people to
read as it doesn’t make the work so repetitive. After I
would have completed my work on these different types of
software I would either embed them on my journal where
everything is neatly presented. One drive would also help
me embed images without using up too much space on my
Mahara. All in all these websites have allowed me to
display my work in a neat and visually interesting way. For
more information on all the websites and applications

Mahara:
Mahara is what I used to upload all of my As and A2 content.
It is a way of visually displaying my work online so that
anyone who I want to see it can. I found this website
extremely helpful throughout my media studies course
because without it there would be know way of me displaying
my course work. It is simple to use and made it easy for
displaying my research, planning and evaluations on. The
one annoying thing about it was the amount of storage wasn’t
enough, so we had to start using one drive to upload some of
our pictures so we didn’t use all our storage.
One drive:
One Drive is a very clever application online as its easy to keep a
lot of files on there without taking up storage. It is also an easy
way to share and use documents at the same time as other
people. For example, when doing our group pitch we had to all do
the same PowerPoint document, so by putting it and sharing it on
one drive, we could easily all access it at the same time, seeing the
work what each other did live. This made it much easier to work
as a team and be officiant with timings. One Drive is also very
easy to use and great for saving my work on so that I could access
it anywhere I needed to.

Slide Share:
Slide Share was an online application I used a lot. I only used it
for PowerPoints as PowerPoints are things that I really enjoy
making. I think that they are a great way to view and present your
work and Slide Share made it really easy to upload it on my
journal as for one it didn’t take up hardly any space because it was
embed and two it made the PowerPoint easy to access at any time
as it was just online. Slide Share allowed my work to look visually
appealing and have a nice flow to it. Not only is slide share really
good but probably one of the most easy software's to use online as
every step was very simple to follow. It was easy to make an
account, easy to make and upload the PowerPoint and easy to
download, share and embed.
Prezi:
Also one of my more used online applications was a good way of
displaying my work in a different and visually interesting way.
Prezi was very good for making it really interesting as I could
add text, images, videos and music in the background. My only
problem with Prezi, is the website was slow and also confusing.
Sometimes it wouldn’t let me embed the projects that I had
spend along time making. This meant I would have to leave a
link on my journal instead which was no where near as good.

YouTube:
This piece of online software was one of the most important as without
this, you wouldn’t be able to view my main final piece. YouTube is an
website that allows me to upload any video onto the internet. It’s a
visually interesting way to display your work as videos are a lot more
fun then just plain text. With this you can upload, share, embed and
download. You can also comment and like videos to give an indication
to the creator If you enjoyed their work. Not only is it a way of
uploading my work, It is also a great way of viewing and researching
into things. With the billions of videos currently on YouTube, there is
pretty much anything and everything when it comes to research. Any
questions or anything your not sure about, you just need to look on
YouTube. YouTube helped me learn about the horror genre, learn about
teaser trailers, taught me how to use software I was unsure of, taught
me how to make my trailers effective, compare the difference in trailers
and research in more depth on camerawork, sound, editing and mise-
en-scene as well as so much more. YouTube is another very simple
online application to use and work your way around.
Powtoon:
I didn’t really use PowToon that much but it a very creative and
different way to make a video. It makes a kind of PowerPoint video
using text and animations. You can either use it as different slides or a
movie. I do like this and it was a fun way to display my work but very
difficult to work with as it was complicated and a very long process.

Emaze:
I enjoyed using Emaze but only really used it once or twice. I
found it like a slightly different online version of PowerPoint as it
is done using slides where you go from one to the next. However
what was great about it, is that I could access it from anywhere
where there was internet. I also really like the more animated
transitions as when you do a PowerPoint and upload it onto slide
share, slide share sometimes takes away the transitions and
animations, which is very annoying because it means the work
isn’t presented as nicely as it could have been. This also means
that it is very visually interesting for the viewer and makes it a lot
more fun and creative. It is also great because I can just embed
straight from the sight rather then having to upload it somewhere
first. Its not too difficult to navigate round but the embedding
was a bit of a problem as it wouldn’t always embed properly
which was so annoying.
Befunky:
This was a completely new website that I hadn’t used at all till this
year. It was different to any of the other websites I had used as it
kind of put it in a poster format. I did like this as it was easy to use as
they took me through a step by step process, however it wasn’t very
big at all and was annoying that I couldn’t fit everything on the
document that I wanted to.

Computer Equipment and
Devises :
The computer equipment and devises were very important as
they allowed me to do everything required for my As and A2
media studies course work. If I didn’t have these devises, I
wouldn’t of been able to do any work as I wouldn’t have the
actual machinery to go onto the websites and software to
evaluate, plan and research. The main machinery and computer
technology that I used was apple products as these are
particually good for editing videos, making music and graphic
design. As well as this They do all the things a standard PC
would do like word documents, internet and applications. I
spent about 90% of my time of this project on the Imac as it was
the best way that I could do everything on one devise. The
Iphone and Ipad I ddint really use a lot but that was because I
was pretty much able to do all of it on the Imac and the Imac
was more designed for what I was doing. For more information
on all of these devises and what I used them for, make sue you

Apple IMac Computer:
The IMac is something I used for pretty much my whole journal. I
used it for most of my research, uploading all the bits and bobs
onto my journal, creating all my different posts ie online software's
and computer software's, creating my videos, creating print based
work and many many other things. The IMac is something that I
am very familiar with as I have a MacBook at home and find it very
easy to work my way around. This allowed me to understand what
I was doing a lot more and naturally know my way around it. The
IMac was particularly good for the editing. The final Cut pro was
on a very big screen and made it easy to find everything that I
needed to find and use the different buttons that I needed to use. It
was also very good for using Adobe Photoshop and illustrator due
to its big workspace and being able to keep up with all the things
that were going on. This helped a lot and made it a lot easier to
work with.

Apple IPhone:
I used my apple IPhone a little bit. I mainly used it to take
pictures of our process. We used this to take practice
photos for our poster and magazine so that we could do
tester versions for the actual magazine. I also took some pre
pictures of where we would be filming before to put a ruff
idea of what and where for the research and planning
process on our journal. Finally I
used my for taking pictures on
the filming day. I took pictures of
the process throughout the day so
that we could put them on our
journal to show what we did, where
we went, the make up, the props and just bits and bobs
that we thought was appropriate. My iPhone also helped
me out if I quickly needed to do some research on
something or watch a quick video last minute. This is
because firing up the computer just to ask a quick question
on google was way too time confusing so instead in 30
seconds I could have the answer as I would just ask it using
safari on my phone which was much more officiant. I also
find apple products very easy to work my way around.

Apple IPad:
The final apple devise that has helped me is the IPad. I found this
very helpful for watching some YouTube videos in the research stage.
This was a slightly bigger screen and made it easy for me to watch the
videos. I also used the IPad for the voice recording. It made it a lot
easier when it came to making voice notes, as I literally just recorded
them onto the voice memos using apple earphones and the mic that
is on them. I would then send this via email and just download it
from there onto my the IMac. This just made the voice nice and clear
for voice overs and any voices or Foley sound that we wanted to use.
Another thing that I did was create the story board animatic on there.
It made it really easy to make it on the internet and then make it on
IMovie just really quickly. It ended up being a very good animatic
that I was very proud of and it was all thanks to the IPad that made it
really easy and nice to do so. I think that
the Ipad is also very easy to work around
and helped me out a lot with the research
and planning for my journal.

Software:
The software that I used was also very important for the
research, planning and evaluations. The software’s were
something that I used a lot to do analysis, and create all 3 of
my final pieces. After last year and due to me taking graphics
as a subject, I already had the basic skills of all the main
software. This helped a lot as it meant that I had a kick start
when It came to creating things on it. I very much enjoyed
doing the work and found myself discovering new tools
everyday. The software was very good software and made it a
lot easier to do the work. Because it was easy for me, it allowed
me to be very officiant as I knew where everything was and
understood what most things did. The software that I enjoyed
using the most was Final Cut Pro X as I very much enjoyed
doing the editing. If you want to find out more detail about
how I used each piece of software please click the

Final Cut Pro X:
Final cut pro was one of the
software's that I used the most
as it was the main thing that I did when doing the final pieces. I
mainly worked on the teaser trailer and therefore mainly used
final cut pro to do so. I used lots of knew tools that I hadn’t used
before like the colour match tool where you can change the colour
and match it to a different clip, the hold tool, where you can
almost freeze the end of clip. I also worked on key framing to
create the company ident this was so different to anything that I
had done before. This was quite difficult and very confusing due to
its slow process of gradual movement. However, I do think thanks
to the team work with Abby we created a good company ident and
it was better because we made it our selves. I think that the
montage editing and carefully selected clips were very good and
worked really nicely. I think everything shares really easily on final
cut pro and the whole YouTube process is very easy to find. I tried
adobe premier pro and I just found that so confusing to work with
and really was stressing me out. It was so different and I really
struggled compared to final cut. I learnt lots of new things on final
cut pro this year which have really increase my editing skills.

Garage Band :
GarageBand was easy and hard to use. I have used it before but only
used the free sounds that it had given me. I would then put them all
together. I found this good but at the same time I felt like I was
cheating by not making it myself. I did really enjoy taking there
sounds and mixing them up by adding and cropping bits. I think that
this added a good effect to our teaser trailer and gave it that eerie
atmosphere that we was after. I did try and create some myself like
the booom sound in my teaser trailer, but it was very hard and took a
while trying to find the right sound. I was using all sorts of different
keyboards on garage band and finding a very low basey boom. It was
hard to make our horror track as it was just so hard to find the right
sounds to use and it was even harder to try and think and make up
sounds. I found it so difficult and frustrating. We made so many
tracks that were just the wrong theme. But finally after a lot of time
spent we got one that we liked and think gave the right atmosphere
for our trailer.

Adobe Creative Cloud:
When Making our film poster and magazine front cover I we used
adobe Photoshop and also adobe illustrator. They are both really
amazing bits of editing software due to the amount of amazing tools
that they have. Some of the tools that I used on Photoshop were the
lasso tool which allowed me to cut round things like the out side of
me and abby for our magazine front cover. I also used the tools on
the image like tones, vibrancy, saturation and curves, to make sure
the actual image was looking at a really high quality and also to
make sure that it had the right light reflectance. I also used the Fxs
too on the image and text. This made my image and text look more
3D and was also very bold. I think Photoshop is a really good piece
of software and works very well. Illustrator isn’t something that I am
as good on as I get a bit confused and think I am using Photoshop
when the tools look the same but do different things, therefore I find
it a bit more confusing and sometimes cant quiet get my head
around how to do it. So I only put the PhotoShop file in there
afterwards so that I could really get the sizes right.

When using this software online and on desktop I found it
very easy to use as I have been using word and PowerPoint
for years. I mainly used this software to create slide shares
in as It was the way I liked to present my work which was a
bit more creative. Word is one that I didn’t actually really
use that much at all as it didn’t really have any presentation
to it, However occasionally I would use it to show mind
maps of things, so it could be useful sometimes. The good
thing about using the online one, is that it would save
online, so I wouldn’t have to worry if I left it on my MacBook
at home because it was online. However, the problem with
online is it was very slow and I didn't have auto correct or
dictionary on it which meant that if I didn’t know how to
spell something I would have to open up google and type it
on there to get the correct spelling. This wasn’t very officiant
and was very annoying as it would put me behind a lot! On
the other hand the computer one was great, really quick and
easy to use. PowerPoint is amazing for creating
presentations on and is just so simple when creating the
presentation that I wanted to create.

When using the digital devises, I used 2 different types of

teaser trailer remake on. The difference between the two
cameras was so different it was unbelievable. I couldn’t
believe how much that they had changed in quality
between the two of the cameras. Not only was the size and
the shape different. But you can do so much more. I felt
so much more professional with the new camera and also
it made a great change for shots and focus. We didn’t use

The cannon 8OD was the camera that we used for our teaser

upgrade from the Cannon Legria. The amount of things you
could do like manual focus to create that focus pull effect or lock
the colour of your surrounds so that it didn’t change colour if the
lighting changed. Not to mentions that it was an amazing camera
in its self and there was lots that you could take and do with it. It
also had a big lens so it could shoot better angles. The only
disadvantage about the camera was the weight of it. It was so
heavy and hard to hold up for long periods of time, which made it
difficult when it came to filming. Besides that though it made for
a better teaser and for that I am grateful. It meant that we could
show off our skills and talents.

The cannon Legria was another camera that we

also used for As. It was a standard video camera
which had auto focus but couldn’t take pictures of
anything it was alright for filming but wasn’t great
quality. However, at least it was light and easy to
use very simple and not complicated. It worked
really well for our teaser remake as it was light
and was good to get us use to filming snippy shots
of things. It helped with the planning and worked
well ad a good prop for our actual teaser and that
style of camera was more conventional of video
cameras.
