Evaluation question 2
How does your media
product represent
particular social
groups?
Age
Gender
Class
Age
❖ One social group that was represented was
youth, both the antagonist and protagonist
are aged 16-21. We tried to represent these
as stereotypical teenagers, for this our
costumes had to represent them accurately.
The males black hoodie, jeans and trainers
give negative connotations of anti-social
behaviour, as this represents mischief and
deviance. The costume of the protagonist
has elements of a stereotypical female
teenager she wore boots which is
stereotypically associated with this age
group. We used a dressing table as a prop
to represent the girl as caring for her
appearance which is stereotypical of the
age group being shown.
Gender
❖ The idea of the female taking care of their
appearance is further emphasised in the female
stereotype who are known for taking pride in their
appearance, we used the props such as make up
and dressing table. There is a high angle shot of the
female character connoting that she is somehow
inferior which is a stereotype of women. The worried
expression on the characters face as shows her
vulnerability which is associated with women and the
stereotype that women are more emotional than men
as the male character has no expressions on his
face. The composition of one shot 1.05 shows the
stereotypical power difference of men and women,
as the male character takes up more of the shot as
well being positioned higher. The male character is
also seen folding his arms in one shot showing his
masculinity. Males are also seen as the more
dominating gender, therefor we added a darker filter
to connote his more foreboding feeling.
Class
❖ Our location contains several
large houses, as well as a rural
setting that gives a preferred
reading of the upper class which
juxtaposes the crime element
which is usually associated with
the under class, which is further
shown in the costume of the
antagonist which is a hoodie,
jeans and trainers, that is
associated with the lower
classes.
