EVALUATIONQUESTION THREE
WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND
WHY?
A film distributor is responsible for the marketing of a film. The distribution companyis usually different
from the productioncompany. Thereare six main studios whomalso do their ownfilm distributing, this
includes:
1) 2othCenturyFox
2) Walt Disney Pictures
3) Warner Brothers
4) ParamountPictures
5) Universal
6) Sony Pictures
Below are several examples of film distributes to whomhave workedwith zombie films:
 DawnOfthe Dead - United Film Distribution Company
 White Zombies – United Artists
 ShaunOf The Dead – Universal Pictures,RoguePictures
 World War Z– ParamountPictures
 I AmLegend – Warner Bros.,RoadShow Entertainment
Isthere a studio that specializes in your genre whowouldmost likely produce, promote anddistribute
yourfilm?
The are noofficial studios towhom deal specifically withthe zombie genre films butin fact it is spread
acrossseveral as different studiostend to workwith different makeups of hybridsmixed withthe
zombie genre, suchas Universal Pictureswhohave been knownto workwith comedyand zombie
mixed films, mostly famously ‘ShaunOf the Dead’ whichreceived a successfulrating of8/10 onIMDB.
Would yourfilm need a majordistributer, or smaller, more independent one? Why?
I believe that my media piece will need to be distributed througha majordistributer becausemy films
target audience norits contentcanbe foundto be neither offensive norbiased towardsany particular
social group,as well as my film not includingexcessive amount ofblood ordetailed violence and witha
classification of15 this means that my films piece isn’t very limited as to whomits viewers maybe which
gives the opportunityfor the film to be more successfulin it creating more profit.
Whichreal life distributer might you see yourself usingif you hada choice?
IfI couldchoosea distributer for my film piece I wouldchooseParamountPicturesbecause they have
previously made successfulzombie film like World War Z whichis a straight upzombie film withoutany
hybrid conceptsinit, whereas Universal Picturesdistributed Shaun OfThe Dead whichis a hybrid with
comedy, and as my zombie film isn’t any form ofhybrid then I wouldchooseParamountPicturesbased
ontheir past experience in distributing successfulzombiefilms that aren’t hybrids. I wouldn’t however
chooseto use Walt Disney as my films distributer because Disney has the brand image of being froma
child’s perspective, perfectbut as my target audience is aimed at males over thirty five I wouldn’tdeem
it very sufficient in getting lots ofviewers and they might get the wrongimpression throughwhoits
associated with as Disney is as I have said, more often thoughtofbeing to do withchild film and hence
may put viewers off.
Arethere any examples of small budgetfilms that have made a success?
One film from the horrorgenre called ‘The Blair WitchProject’ made a successfulfilm piece from a
small budget, and yet received a star rating of6.4 on IMDB,this indicates to me that a film can be
successfulevenif it’s made with a low budgethowever, this film if from the horrorgenre rather than a
the zombie genre. One successfulfilmmade ona low budget was‘Might Of the Living Dead’, this film
was made in 1968sothe graphics andquality ofthe actual film aren’t as goodas zombie films now and
also the abundanceof zombies duringthis time wasmuchless so the zombie film competition market
wasn’t as big thenas whatit is now, andwhat it wouldbe for my piece. The only other zombie film
whichwasa successundera small budget was‘Zombies Strippers’, this was only dueto the nudity and
eye candycharactersthat this film made any form ofsuccessandhence makes it hard forcomparison
against my work. Sooverall, althoughother genres have made successfulfilmsonly using a low budget
these aren’t really in the zombie genre and more in the horrorgenre. This demonstrates to me that
zombie’s films need to have a rather large budget in order to make it successfulandwhereashorror is
scaringliving people and something we are every day aware of how todo, the zombie genre films
aren’t, they include aspects of death and unnaturalbeings whichto ourselves we aren’t certain about
and this is whyzombie’s films need a big budget in order tobe successfulasthey need to be convincing
whilst creating a realism conceptthroughoutthefilm.
Where wouldyou expectyour film to go?
I wouldexpectthat my zombie film Immunity wouldgoand be shownwithin a multiplex, this is because
my target audience is based ona mainstream market and hencewouldbe more appropriate and
sacksfulbeing shownthrougha larger standard rather than throughan independent art housecinema
as this wouldlimit the viewing range andmy films potential ofbeing as successfulasit couldbe, also
being my media film doesn’tdiscriminate against anyform ofsocial groupand hence means that it
wouldbenefit from a wider viewing availability so that its financial return aren’t restricted from whatits
potential couldbe.
Where wouldI advertise my film?
Asa key part ofmy marketing in distribution I wouldcalculate my advertising carefully suchas through
YouTube, this is because YouTubeis an extremely popular website whichpeople all acrossthe globe
use, bothbusinesses’ and members ofthe public. It’s throughYouTubethat I think my film opening will
truly get people attention as wenthey see the advert for it on YouTubethey only have toclick and it
automatically sends them directly to its reciprocatingtrailer, it’s throughsuchsimple accessas this that
people will notice andwant to watchmy film on a high demanding basis.
