2. A) HOW DID YOU RESPOND TO THE ORIGINAL
BRIEF WITH THE AUDIENCE IN MIND? GIVE
DETAILS OF AUDIENCE RESEARCH CARRIED OUT
AT THE PLANNING STAGE.
• The brief given for our project was to create a 5 minute short film
including the title and credit sequence. We also had to choose the age
and genre and create the product.
• In response to this we decided to create a thriller with the title ‘Outcast’
this follows the storyline of a teenager called Zachary who is in school
and is being bullied by his peers. He then discovers he has supernatural
abilities and decides to seek revenge on his bullies by writing in a magic
book that allows everything he writes in it to happen. With this storyline
in mind we decided the most appropriate genre would be a supernatural
thriller for that storyline.
3. PRE-PRODUCTION QUESTIONNAIRE
• We decided to do this questionnaire on paper and hand it out to people
with our initial storyline these were some of the responses:
4. WHAT AGE GROUP DO YOU THINK
OUR FILM IS?
The response to this question was, 3 people voted for the film to have
an age 15 certificate. 2 people said our film should have an 18
certificate and no votes were collected for 12/U. The age certificate
we choose to go with was the 15 due to language and behaviour in
the film also we wanted the film to appeal to a teenage audience as
the main character in the film was a teenage himself and the film was
based around bullying in school which a younger audience may relate
to more. We did not choose the 18 or lower certificate as we did not
think it contains anything graphic and is appropriate for children.
5. WHAT GENRE DO YOU THINK OUR
FILM IS?
• Mostly everyone that we asked said our film was a supernatural thriller
which was right. 1 person said our film was a thriller which is also
correct as it is one of the subgenres. 1 person said our film was a drama
which is not correct however some of the scenes may be seen as
dramatic and 0 people said our film was a comedy however some light
hearted comedy and irony are in some of the scenes in our film.
6. WOULD YOU WATCH OUR FILM?
• We were delighted that 4 out of 5 people said they would watch our film
as we did think it was an interesting idea. The 1 person who said they
wouldn’t may just not like the genre of the film or just weren’t interested.
7. DO YOU UNDERSTAND OUR
STORYLINE?
• 4 out of 5 people said they do understand our genre which was
important in creating the film. 1 person said they do not understand it
which is why in the previous question 1 person said they wouldn’t watch
our film. The reason may be they just do not understand the storyline
and it does not make sense to them however we asked for feedback off
everyone on how to make it better.
8. WHAT SETTING SHOULD OUR FILM
BE SET IN?
• 3 out of 5 people said our film should be shot in a house which part of it
was. We filmed a few scenes in college and the college library which
only 1 person voted for and also 1 person voted for the woods. However
we did not film any of the scenes in the woods but we filmed some of
them in the park. These results were unexpected however this may
have been due to the fact in the storyline we said the main character
Zachary was in his bedroom and the audience may have thought he
was always going to be there.
9. WHAT WE LEARNED FROM THE PRE-
PRODUCTION QUESTIONNAIRE.
• From the Pre-Production storyline we decided to change a few things
within our initial storyline. We decided to cut out the bit where Zachary
picks up his bag when the bell rings before leaving to the park as it was
irrelevant and we wanted to make the ending shorter and more precise.
We decided to do the ending all in one place which was the park so it
was easier for the audience to understand. We also decided that asking
only 5 people was not efficient enough and we couldn’t get proper
results so for the next questionnaire we decided to ask as many people
as possible so we could get more varied results and we also decided to
ask short and long answers to get a different range of opinions.
10. POST PRODUCTION QUESTIONNAIRE
• For this we decided to use Google Forms which is an online software
that allows you to create different types of questionnaires and share it
with a shareable link. We asked people to watch the rough cut of our
film and answer some questions. To do this we made a blog post and
embedded the YouTube link of our rough cut and the link of our
questionnaire onto it and then shared the link of the blog post to people
within our target audience. Doing it this way ensured for the most
responses possible which improved on our 5 responses from our pre-
production questionnaire. We also included more short and long answer
texts mixed with multiple choice meaning we could get a wider range of
data.
12. WHAT KIND OF MUSIC WOULD YOU EXPECT TO
HEAR IN OUR FILM DURING THE SCENE WHEN
ZACHARY IS IN HIS BEDROOM CARRYING OUT HIS
RITUAL?
For this question the response was towards
making the music tense and having a scary
atmosphere. This is what we initially decided to
use as a group anyway but having the
reassurance from our audience allowed us to
go ahead with the music we initially wanted to
use.
13. WHAT GENRE DO YOU THINK OUR
FILM IS?
• All of the people said our genre was a
supernatural thriller which was correct. This is a
positive as we got the genre across to the
audience.
14. WHERE WOULD YOU EXPECT TO SEE
OUR FILM?
• 70% of the people said they would expect to see our
film on YouTube and the other 30% of people said
they would expect to see our film on Netflix. Both are
good answers however we will be uploading our short
film to YouTube as YouTube was our main source for
when searching for other peoples short films.
15. WHAT COULD WE ADD TO IMPROVE
OUR FILM?
• There were 3 responses to this question, some people
said they wished to see more of a background story to
Zachary and his bullying and some people said we
should add more dialogue and context. This is definitely
something we will keep in mind for when finishing the
film. Some of the other responses were things such as
fixing the continuity errors.
16. THE CHANGES WE MADE.
• We recieved a lot of useful information which helped to futher improve
our film, the most useful and important critiques were about our storyline
and dialogue. We decided to add more monlogue to Zachary's
character that are straight to the point and clear and almsot explain what
he is going to do as we wanted the audience to be clear on his
intentions and understand our film. for example when Zachary is in the
library speaking to the libriarian we added a freeze frame and
monologue to explain what he is doing there and what he is looking for,
we also added another scene of when Zachary is being bullied like
suggested by the audience as this allowed us to use his magic abilities
more and really show the audience what the film was about and we did
not want people to be confused by our film or dislike it.
