What kind of media institution
might distribute your media
product and why?
By Tiarnan Greene
What is a film distributor?
• A film distributor are the studios responsible with the marketing and
the release of the company. Sometimes the production company will
distribute their own movies but usually because of the budget
limiting how much they can do, they will hire other studios to
distribute the movie
• A distributor is also responsible to choose the date of the film release
in order to get the movie and production company a large profit, for
example they may release a movie during the summer because
people are done with school and work for 6 weeks, so by releasing
the film during the summer they have a large audience coming to see
the movies. These films are usually called ‘summer blockbusters’
Vertigo Films
• Vertigo Films is a British film production and
distribution company from England Vertigo Films
have released films such as ‘Bronson’, ‘Monsters’
and ‘Spring Breakers’.
• Vertigo Films would be a good distributor to use
since they usually releases movies that are
unknown or have small budgets, and usually ones
made in the UK. They also have been known for
being huge in the box office. An example of this is
the release of ‘Monsters’ after a small budget of
$500,000, the film was distributed by Vertigo
films and was able to have a box office hit of $4.2
million overall.
Revolver Entertainment
• Another distributor we have seen is another distributor is
revolver entertainment.
• Revolver entertainment is a film distributor from the
United Kingdom as well as the United States.
• Revolver Entertainment was responsible of the release of
films such as ‘Iron Sky’, ‘Spike Island’ and ‘An Act of War’
• The problem with revolver entertainment is however, if
revolver entertainment do not think ‘Tarot’ would be able
to have a wide release, they may try to release straight-to-
DVD or a one day cinema release like they had done with
‘Iron Sky’. But the problem will be because we don’t have
an audience ready to watch the movie, it may cause our
movie to flop at the box office and means we would not be
able to make a profit of our movie.
Who would I choose?
• I think I would choose to be self –published through our own studio,
Ice Age Pictures.
• I would try things such as local cinemas and film festivals such as
Sundance or Bedford Film Festival in order to spread the word about
my movie and this way it could also mean some distributors would
contact me in order to distribute my project under their studio name.
We could also try an online release on website such as YouTube which
would spread the world online.
• This will however, be very risky since we do not yet have an audience
so our film may not make enough money to cover our budget, or
create an audience for our movie.
