EVALUATION QUESTION #3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and
why?
What does a distributer do?
• In the film industry, distributer are big or small companies that are
responsible for marketing and managing the film.
• They have all commercial rights to the film once they have signed a
contract with the producer.
• The distributers have more rights over the producers about
marketing. Therefore they decide how the film is going to be released
e.g. DVD, Blue-ray, Video on demand, Cinema’s, online streaming
etc.…
• The distributer also gets to chose when the film will be released.
Film distributors
• Our group researched lots of different low-budget film distributors
who could hypothetically distribute our film if we had made the
whole thing.
• The reason we researched low-budget is due to the fact that our film
is also low-budget which means high-budgeted film companies such
as Disney or universal studios, wouldn’t agree to distribute our film as
they wouldn’t se it being a huge money making success.
• Our film is classed as a low-budget independent British film. We
found two similar low-budget British film distributors – Film 4 and
Vertigo films.
Film4 and Vertigo films
• Whilst researching Film4, we discovered that they were the distributors for
the film ‘Slumdog millionaire’. This film was similar to ours in the fact that it
was a low-budget produced film with a small production budget. However,
it did manage to make its way to the Oscars. This is a great example of how
a low budget film can become a huge success.
• Vertigo films is similar to our film and film4, because like us they are also a
low-budget film company. They could potentially promote our independent
film. Vertigo films have distributed relatively successful films like the 2010
‘Monsters’ . Monsters had a production budget of less than $500,000
however, they were still able to produce and distribute a successful film.
Our independent British film company
• During the creation of our first ident we decided to go with one that was
well-known but put a twist on it. We chose the ‘20th century fox’ ident but,
turned it into our own which we called ‘21st century sox’. At first we
thought it was good but we soon came to realise that it looked too
comedic and it wasn’t going to suit our genre of film, so we decided to
change it.
• When we changed our ident, it was only Ben and myself in the group as our
other member left join someone else. So we thought about incorporating
out two names together and using that as the title. We ended up with the
name ‘Benton’, a combination of Ben (Bens first name), and Lenton (my last
name). Despite the fact this didn’t really have any genre relation to our film
opening sequence, it did fit better than the ‘21st century sox’ one.
