                 What have you learned from your audience feedback?

During the entire planning and production process of our music video me and Jamie knew
our target audience would play a huge part in deciding the outcome of the video. Before
starting we only had our own limited knowledge, which was a lot of guesswork. We of
course had our own preconceptions of what audience belonged to the Drum and Bass
genre, but we knew we needed solid ground to work on.

The first thing we decided was vital to find out was fairly
basic – the age of our audience. We originally predicted
the age to be around 17-25 generally, but also didn’t
want to rule out other ages as we both knew others
above and below who enjoyed the genre. As the
inception of Drum and Bass was actually a little before
mine and Jamie’s own time, it was likely older audiences
were also likely to be apparent.

From our feedback we discovered a large majority of them were in fact in the 17-25 ages
range. However, there was also a large portion of people in the 26-35 category as we had
predicted. We were only basing this on the respondents of our surveys, and these may have
in fact been in places more accessible, or more readily accessed by a younger audience. We
took these results with a pinch of salt, but we based much of our concept on the idea of a
predominantly younger audience which we believed to be accurate. This also allowed us to
create a more targeted, appropriate approach to finding more information about our target
audience.

Using our questionnaires we discovered an overwhelming majority of people thought that
song was better without lyrics, or would not be improved with them. Many people felt the
lack of lyrics allowed more focus on the video itself, rather than being distracted of
influenced by lyrics.

The feedback received also helped us decide on costumes and other character elements of
the video, including tone and style. Much of our audience liked the idea of the contrast of
colours to give a delusion and mania feel to the story. Feedback such as this was essential o
make sure we connected with our target audience. It also made us realise our audience was
paying attention to some of the much finer details we may have not noticed before.

This feedback also allowed us to plan and shoot everything incredibly efficiently – in no
more than one day of shooting – giving us more time to edit and add the fine features the
audience were so sure they wanted.
Our editing style and pace were hugely edited by our audience feedback. Before begging the
editing phase we reviewed our original feedback of ‘ what would you expect from a music
video belonging to the drum and bass genre?’. One trend we noticed was that many people
expected a fast pace of cut editing, and timing beats and impact sounds with events within
the video. This influenced our editing the most out of anything, along with mine and Jamie’s
own desire for an editing challenge. We learnt this process can be challenging, and at times
frustrating. However, the end result was incredible satisfying, and the audience seemed to
also enjoy the result, so overall it was a success.

We concluded our audience feedback was a huge contributing factor in our production, and
influenced it in a big way. The feedback gave us new ideas, consolidated existing ones, and
allowed us to efficiently produce a successful music video.

  • 1. Evaluation question 3 What have you learned from your audience feedback? During the entire planning and production process of our music video me and Jamie knew our target audience would play a huge part in deciding the outcome of the video. Before starting we only had our own limited knowledge, which was a lot of guesswork. We of course had our own preconceptions of what audience belonged to the Drum and Bass genre, but we knew we needed solid ground to work on. The first thing we decided was vital to find out was fairly basic – the age of our audience. We originally predicted the age to be around 17-25 generally, but also didn’t want to rule out other ages as we both knew others above and below who enjoyed the genre. As the inception of Drum and Bass was actually a little before mine and Jamie’s own time, it was likely older audiences were also likely to be apparent. From our feedback we discovered a large majority of them were in fact in the 17-25 ages range. However, there was also a large portion of people in the 26-35 category as we had predicted. We were only basing this on the respondents of our surveys, and these may have in fact been in places more accessible, or more readily accessed by a younger audience. We took these results with a pinch of salt, but we based much of our concept on the idea of a predominantly younger audience which we believed to be accurate. This also allowed us to create a more targeted, appropriate approach to finding more information about our target audience. Using our questionnaires we discovered an overwhelming majority of people thought that song was better without lyrics, or would not be improved with them. Many people felt the lack of lyrics allowed more focus on the video itself, rather than being distracted of influenced by lyrics. The feedback received also helped us decide on costumes and other character elements of the video, including tone and style. Much of our audience liked the idea of the contrast of colours to give a delusion and mania feel to the story. Feedback such as this was essential o make sure we connected with our target audience. It also made us realise our audience was paying attention to some of the much finer details we may have not noticed before. This feedback also allowed us to plan and shoot everything incredibly efficiently – in no more than one day of shooting – giving us more time to edit and add the fine features the audience were so sure they wanted.
  • 2. Our editing style and pace were hugely edited by our audience feedback. Before begging the editing phase we reviewed our original feedback of ‘ what would you expect from a music video belonging to the drum and bass genre?’. One trend we noticed was that many people expected a fast pace of cut editing, and timing beats and impact sounds with events within the video. This influenced our editing the most out of anything, along with mine and Jamie’s own desire for an editing challenge. We learnt this process can be challenging, and at times frustrating. However, the end result was incredible satisfying, and the audience seemed to also enjoy the result, so overall it was a success. We concluded our audience feedback was a huge contributing factor in our production, and influenced it in a big way. The feedback gave us new ideas, consolidated existing ones, and allowed us to efficiently produce a successful music video.
