It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

1. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
Evaluation question 2
2. In my media magazine it mainly features male
characters. Although the lead singer of Playing the Pilot
is female, the rest of the band are male. The male
characters seem to be more important in my magazine
as they fit the house style of it, as it is very masculine.
In the magazine i used this as my
contents page. I darkened the photo
so it would go with the blood
red/black colours of it.
I used mainly red and black
throughout my magazine. This is my
unfinished contents page. I darkened
the photos so it would have a very
masculine effect.
3. I use very masculine colours like black, and blood red.
My magazine didn’t have a specific male or female
audience, although it is very masculine i believe that
females will enjoy it just as much as males. Gender is
represented in my magazine through the style of font
and colours i use. Most of my ‘slang’ is aimed at any
teenage group or social group, mainly aimed at
certain stereo-types that enjoy rock metal music.
As you can see the band develops the forms and
conventions of a normal indie/rock band. Most indie
fans will look up to this band for the way they Female lead singer

members.
Rhythm guitarist also looking very indie.
Long messy hair, ear stretch, plain top.
4. The age group my magazine features is around ages
of 15-18, but not specifically any age as many bands
in my magazine range to over 25-30 years old. I
made this magazine for mainly teenagers and
students who enjoy going to gigs and going to live
music venues. I believe both the characters in my
magazine and the audience will be pretty much the
same age, Yet the metal and rock audience have a
very big age range. Age is represented through the
text and certain ‘slang’ used in the magazine. It is
also shown through the colours and fonts, for
example, i used allot of red and black.
As you can see by this crowd
shot, it is what most
indie/rock fans will expect. A
good vibe with lots of people
enjoying the music. It consists
of mostly younger students.
This picture of 3 band members
develops the forms and conventions of
a normal indie/rock band. Plain
clothes, long hair, ear piercings.
5. If i was aiming at a younger age range i would be looking at
more brighter or ‘happier’ colours such as blue or yellow.
My magazine supports the idea that slang is used to appeal
to a certain audiences, so everybody who doesn’t
understand the slang wont be able to read it or understand
it. There is a range of classes in my media magazine, mainly
middle class students. Yet my magazine shows a very indie
class, as most of the bands that are in my magazine
support that genre of music. This indie class is very
dominant throughout my magazine. My magazine also
comes across rock and metal classes, this is shown through
colours such as black, that would appeal to the class.
As you can see by this
kerrang! Contents page, they
use allot of black. This colour
is very dominant throughout
rock magazines and music
magazines such as this one
seem to put allot of black in.
Also, as you can see in this rock sound
contents page they use allot of the colour
red, this colour obviously appeals to
indie/rock fans.
6. My magazine supports the fact that
it represents rock/metal and indie
stereo-types through the people
featured in it. Long
hair/vans/flannel tops and the
whole ‘i don’t care’ look. Such
representations are vital for a
magazine that wants to appeal to a
certain stereo type. The ethnicity
of my magazine is mainly white
indie figures. Yet it appeals to every
ethnicity, its very monoculture yet
any ethnicity will enjoy it. The
white/indie ethnicity is mainly
dominant through this magazine. I use allot of slang in my double page spread that only
indie/rock fans would really understand. Such words
I warped the word ‘the’ in the as ‘vibe’. I also darkened the photos in this double

7. This is my front cover, i used allot of red in this front
cover with different fonts.
I darkened the picture and reduced the red eye in
the band members eyes as it was very noticeable.
