For a school media studies project, the student created an opening sequence for a crime thriller/gangster film with their team. They had regular meetings to develop the narrative and presentation to pitch their idea. In researching conventions of the genre, they found crime films commonly feature suspense, tension building throughout, dark lighting and colors, suits and fast-paced action scenes. Their sequence showed a man waking up tied to a chair mysteriously and trying to escape, building tension. It also featured an unconventional female lead character and revealed minimal details about the setting in Chicago and a serial killer to avoid revealing too much.
