• Our production name is 'Box Productions'. We chose this name because we
found out that 'The Box' is British slang for 'Television set'. This shows that
the name is related to television
• Our logo is a static TV which fades out and then has the word 'BOX' appears
on the TV screen, followed by 'productions' sliding letter by letter into
position. The end shot of our logo is the TV with BOX written on it and
PRODUCTION written underneath it which then fades to black.
• We got sound from YouTube to put over our production logo and it fit well.
Fish Tank
• I chose this film because it is a British Independent film like ours and so I feel
that it would be marketed in the same way.

• Although, the concept of the film is slightly different to ours, the film was
marketed in a way which made it more popular than it would have been
otherwise.
• The Fish Tank website ‘www.ifcfilms.com/films/fish-tank’ is a great way to market
the film. It talks about its previous awards (winner of festival de cannes jury
prize), shows critic reviews and reviews from popular magazines and
newspapers. This way people will be interested to see what the buzz is about.
This website also includes the latest news, trailers, photos, cast and crew
information and even had a link to book tickets to watch the film when it was
released.
Distribution

• We have chosen this production company because it has a lot of experience
with independent films.

They are an independent UK film distribution company.

• They have produced many thriller movies including Johnny English, Johnny
English Reborn and Green Zone.
• A possible marketing campaign for our film could be a facebook page. Within
this facebook page there would be a specific page for each of the chatacters,
explaining everything about them. There would also be trailers, photos, behind
the scene videos, interviews with the stars and many more.
• We would also create a twitter page which we could keep people updated on
things like when the film will be released, when the trailer will be released,
where to buy tickets for the film etc.
LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIM TASK WHAT
HAVE YOU LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION FROM
IT TO FULL PRODUCT?
• One of the main things we learnt and improved on is our editing skills. During
the prelim task, as it was our first time editing, we found it very difficult
therefore it took a while to get a hang of it but now that it has been a good
few months we have really grasped the concept and finding it much easier to
edit and use different effects to make our film more effective.
• Another thing we have majorly improved on is our camerawork. We’ve learnt
to use many more techniques like panning, 180 degree rule, match on action,
shot/reverse shot and many more. These shots help our film to look more
professional and as if it is a real opening sequence.
• When we first started using garage band we found it very confusing as there
are a lot of elements to it, but over time we have become really confident
with using it and are able to use it fluently rather than have to keep asking for
help from our teacher. This has also enabled us to be able to create suitable
music for our opening sequence.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT
TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE PROCESS OF

• Camera – Used to capture all of our scenes in good quality to late be edited
on the computer.

• Tripod – A tripod was essential to ensure that we had no shaky shots in our
film as if we did then we would be marked down because it would decrease
the quality of our film.

Garage band – This is where we created all of our music for our opening sequence.
We found various suitable sound effects and combined them to make one music
piece to late be put on top of our film.

Email – Email was one of our main communication ways, from sending emails about
where we are filming, to sending each other our contribution to the work to then all
be put together.
• Livetype – Livetype was used to make our titles which included the directors
names and actors names etc. Livetype enabled us to use different fonts and
effects which could then be transferred to be put onto our film.

• Adobe premiere – This is where all of the editing was done. Where all the music
and external parts where transferred to in order for everything to be combined to
make our final film.
• YouTube – We used YouTube to get different Foley sound effects in order to
insert into our film and make it more effective. One of the main things we used
for YouTube is to get the TV static sound for our production logo.

• Photoshop – We used Photoshop to create things like our production logo and
our title which appears in the opening sequence. It was a long but successful
process.
HOW DOES OUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT
SOCIAL GROUPS?
Steven (Adam) Is our main antagonist, he is sinister and mysterious. He
represents the high class males in society, but he has a dark side to him. He uses
his power and money to avoid being charged for the murders he commits. The
reason we chose this type of character is to create fear as this is a character of
power and the audience wouldn’t really suspect him. Steven wears a suit, this
breaks from the typical convention of a stalker, which would normally be someone
in a hoodie. This also makes him look a lot more calculating and also would make
him a lot more smarter; using chemicals to kill his victims rather than a knife. We
also keep his face hidden, keeping him anonymous.
Also with our character being Asian we use the stereotypical view of terrorism,
which relates to our film, despite possibly stigmatising audiences. Because he
uses chemicals to kill his victims he is seen as both clever and dangerous rather
than just dangerous.

Sara (Kelly) Is our first victim, she is portrayed and represents the
vulnerable teenage girl as she is an easier target. Also in the story
she travels alone which makes her a lot more vulnerable to our killer.
She wears casual clothes as she is on the daily commute and
doesn’t know that she is being watched. Which gives the audience a
fear that it could happen to anyone at anytime.
AUDIENCES
• Looking at the BBFC websites we classed our thriller as a 12 rating because
it would have some strong language, with moderate violence and there are
some scenes in the film that would have violence and gore in context with
the murders that happen.
• One main issue that may push it up to a 15 is the concept of terrorism, which
may be unsuitable for children under 15 or they might not understand it,
removing the impact on the film will have on the audience.
AUDIENCES PROFILE
• From my previous questionnaire results, I found out that females are
more likely to go and watch thriller films, even though they are more
shown in the films as a victim.
• The target audience would be female mid teens/young adults. They
would watch TV shows such as Family guy, hollyoaks, Supernatural,
Friends etc. The films they would watch would be a range of films from
romantic comedies to horror films, and read magazines with celebrity
gossip such as Hello, and would want to see films with big stars that
they follow, they would listen to music in the charts such as pop or indie
again with well known stars in them.
• Based on my research of the shows the target audience watches, we
chose the victim to have similar views so the audience

• Seven is similar to our film with the role of a reclusive serial killer. It’s a crime
thriller, and its main audiences would be for males as the two main characters
are male. The last train home can be seen as similar, however appeals to
females rather than males. Seven is a male dominated film; two female
characters are portrayed as victims which highlights the female stereotype of
being vulnerable which we have applied to our film. Seven would also apply to
ages 18-35 due to the nature and content of the film. It is rated an 18 due to its
high violence and profanities and also the tone of the film would be frightening
for younger viewers or they might not understand it.

INFLUENCES: THE MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN

At the beginning we only see who
produced the film and the main title.
It’s a plain black background with a
light that moves across it, just like the
lights from a passing train.

Unlike our film the midnight meat train
doesn’t have any more titles until the
credits. For our main title we used the
train timetable screens, so our
audience already know the main
setting .
SETTING AND KILLER
•

Both of the films are mainly set in a train
station, where the murders happen although
for different reasons.

•

Our antagonist Steven is a lot like
Mahogany, the killer in the midnight meat
train. Another similarity is our killers identity,
it’s hidden using camera shots in our film,
and lighting and editing in the midnight meat
train to keep both killers anonymous.

Both of our killers are wearing suits, making
them seem much more than the average
hoodie. This breaks away from that
connotation, it also makes them look more
important and sophisticated making them
look more of a threat.

They both don’t have much dialogue in the
films however in the midnight meat train it is
because he physically cant speak. We chose
our killer to have little dialogue is because it
makes him look more mysterious and
therefore scarier.
VICTIMS

Both our victims are on the
tube/subway when they are
going to be murdered.

They are both vulnerable as
our victim Sara is on the
late night commute. She is
also a teenage girl which
already gives out the
connotations of a typical
victim. In the midnight meat
train the victim is a male,
however he is alone and
was asleep, and because
he is on a high speed train
there is virtually no escape
from his murderer.
MUSIC

Both our films begin with the diegetic
noise of the train, although the shot is of
either the interior or exterior of the train.
The music building suspense also makes
the audience question the killers motives
and why he obsesses with the tube. The
music in the opening scene is to
establish a sound motif that the audience
associate the music to the next murder,
creating fear and suspense.

In the midnight meat train the music
however slowly begins to build up which
creates tension, the music increases
when the victim has fallen in the blood,
and also when he is looking through the
window into the next carriage, (which
has non diegetic noise of the killer
already murdering someone) showing to
the audience through what they see and
the music that he is in danger.
LIGHTING

Lighting in the midnight meat train at the
beginning is bright showing the glare from
the tube train lights, however once he gets
up and looks around the lights start to
flicker, giving a hint to the audience that this
part of the film is going to get quite ‘dark’ in
the sense that something bad is going to
happen. After we see the title of the film it
cuts to the city during the day, showing a
contrast as the bright and busy city knows
nothing of what happens in the tubes at
night.
