Editor's Notes
My media product uses a lot of codes and conventions of music magazines, such as mast head, cover line, puffs, plugs ect. Some conventions I developed from magazines I researched and others I challenged because they would not attract my target audience and are not suited to the genre of my magazine.
I developed the codes and conventions of pop magazines because I used a similar house style to usual magazines, such as the colour scheme like pinks, blues and other bright colour’s, Like most magazines I did this because it adds to the content of how my magazine is aimed at my specific target audience. I also developed the codes and conventions by the way I set out the layout of front cover with the mast head at the top of the page and main image in the center with the main cover line across the picture. Also like all magazines I placed a barcode on my front cover for when it is sold in stores but I decided that by developing the conventions of the Top of The Pops magazine which usually comes in a plastic wrapping because it comes with separate gift items I could place the barcode on the wrapping.
Unlike my front cover I challenged the usual layout of a contents pages from music magazines such as Q magazine because they are aimed at a different class range than what my magazine is aimed at, I did this because they are mostly text based with a few pictures but because of the target audience of my magazine it would be unsuitable for me to use a large range of text because I know from experience that children and young teens don ’ t like to read a lot and would rather have more pictures. Also I was influenced by the layout of contents pages that aren’t music magazines but are aimed at women and young teens, such as OK! And chat because of they way they divide their contents page into sections.
For my double page spread I mostly developed the codes and conventions of my influencing magazines because I had my main image take up most of one side of the article along with the title of the article. For interviews most music magazines use the question and answer technique which is what I decided to use, because it gives you more of insight into the people that are being interviewed because it is their own words not somebody elses . Another convention I developed was the use of band profiling because of my magazine being aimed at young girls like most magazines they interview the hottest new bands, and those reading the article want to know everything about the newest bands, so by adding a profile section for each member of my band I can give my reader the details they want to know. Another convention I developed is the use of colour in the way I layout my interview. I decided to keep the way I had wrote the names of the band members in their profiles, so the reader could easily see who had said what. I also changed the colour of the text so the reader can see what is the question and what is the answer.
This is a look at a typical reader of my magazine. My typical reader would be female with an age range from 8 to 13, who is very into social networking using sites such as Facebook. They would also listen to a lot of pop music because that is the genre of my magazine. Another convention that I could have used in my magazine was that of placing posters in the magazine for the reader to take out, and what most typical magazine readers do is place them posters on their walls.
I have based the characters I created for my magazine on real life celebrities that would appear in my type of music magazine, so my band is based on the Jonas Brothers because they are the type of band my social group would be related to.
There are 2 media institutions that would distribute my music magazine. One them is the BBC, they distribute Top Of The Pops magazine which is one of the magazines I researched and influenced a lot of my own music magazine. Another institution is IPC media, they don ’t necessarily distribute music magazines but they do distribute magazines such as Chat and Women, who also influenced my magazine in the way i set out my contents page.
This is a table of the social classes that my magazine could be aimed at, I decided that my magazine would be aimed at the band range of C2DE, because of the type of people who would buy my magazine and because of its contents. My magazine isnt aimed at higher class people because of my target audience being young teens they wouldn’ t understand the language used, and it wouid mean I didn ’ t understand who I was aiming my magazine at.
At first my target audience was not going to be young girls because when I sent my questionnaire out it was sent to a even range of boys and girls but was mostly teenagers and a few adults. From that I found out they mostly liked similar genres of music as rock, indie and metal. But when I was drafting each section for my product, I had a form of focus group which decided that because of the magazines I read I would have more knowledge about the codes and conventions of pop magazines, which made me realise that I would be more successful when producing my media product.
I attracted my target audience by the house style I used like the font and the colour, by making them stand out on the page. This is what catches their eye when they see it on the stands in shops. I also attracted the audience by the conventions I used such as the plug ‘Win’ letting them know that there was a competition inside and making them think about what they could win, making them want to purchase the magazine. Another way I attracted them was by the amount of images and text I used, because if I used too much text they would get bored of just reading, so I needed to add pictures to keep them interested.
I have learnt a lot about technologies throughout the process of constructing my music magazine. I have learnt how to use a professional camera and how to get the best out of my photo. I have also learnt how to edit my photos on adobe photoshop, and how the different tools can change the photo. The other piece of technology I used was serif page plus, I used page plus when I was creating the pages for my magazine such as front cover, contents page and double page spread. I also used fireworks create my text such as my mast head, cover line and even my page numbers.
This is what I learnt from my preliminary task, its about the power points of photography and the use of a professional camera, a main point I learnt was where to place the main attraction of the image in particular places.
Once I had taken my photos I used adobe Photoshop to edit them. One of the tools I used was the lasso tool, which has 3 different settings. One of the settings is the magnetic lasso which means I could drag my cursor round the object in the picture.
Once the object in my photo was selected I inversed the command so it selected the space around the object that I wanted to delete.
This is how my photo looked once I had deleted the background of my photo. I deleted the background of my photo because the photo was going to be placed on a white page so I wanted it to blend in.
The next step which took place when editing my photo was changing the hue and saturation. I decided to change the colour of the guitar because it would suit the audience it was being aimed at which was young females. So by lowering the hue and raising the saturation and lightening the photo it turned the guitar bright pink.
This picture was being placed on my contents page in the competition section because one of the competitions that are mainly shown throughout music magazines are for fans to win signed items from the solo artist or band. Because of me using a convention of music magazines I needed to show a signed guitar on my contents page, what I learnt from this is how to layer photos on photoshop because I didn ’t have a guitar that I could write on directly, I took a picture of the writing that would have been originally on the guitar and had to layer it onto the guitar so it looked like it had been signed by the artist themselves.
Another tool I learnt to use within Photoshop is changing the brightness/contrast of my photos. I decided to change the brightness/contrast on most of my pictures because they did not stand out on the page, it also added some colour to my models face because she looked pale.
I used fireworks to create the text for my magazine because I am used to using this specific programme, I found it easier because I can easily see how my text will appear. I also used it to create the page numbers for my magazine because I could use the same colour I used for my font and I knew how to create shapes on the programme that would appeal to my target audience.
I made reference to the x factor on my contents page, and because it is a pop magazine children and young teens don ’t want to read as much, so because of copy right I created my own x factor logo, once again using the fireworks programme, which I could use on my contents page. This was so the readers easily knew what that certain article will be about. To do so I had to layer up each section of the logo from the background colour, to each individual X.
By using serif page plus I could plan the layout of each section of my magazine. I could plan where my text could be placed, even though I had not yet taken my pictures I had an idea of where I wanted things to go.
I have learnt how to create a blog throughout the process of this task. I have used the blog to show my research and progress, such as when I had researched different genres of magazine and then when I focused directly on researching a particular genre of magazine which in my case was pop, I then blogged my analysis of certain magazines front cover and double page spreads. Also when I had drawn my draft layouts for my front cover, contents and double page spread. I scanned them onto my computer and posted them onto my blog.
I also used social networking sites, in which I mailed a questionnaire to people when I was researching my target audience. I learnt from this because to me a social networking site is for keeping in touch with friends and not using it for work purposes, but because of the range of people I know it helped my research. I mailed my questionnaire to a varied age range and gender, so I got an equal amount of male and female response.
I also learnt how to use Slide Share which made it easier to post work onto my blog. I was unable to post my word documents directly to my blog, so I learnt how to post my documents to slide share and then embedded them onto blogger.
Looking back at my preliminary task I have realised ive learnt a lot from the process of both magazines. These are my front covers from my preliminary task and the product I have just created. I have learnt about how different things can attract my target audience, such as how I actually layout the product and what font I use and the colour I make it.
What I have learnt from creating my contents page in the preliminary task is what I put on it. From creating the contents page for my preliminary task I didn ‘ t put enough information on where as for my latest product I created I put too much writing on my contents page, which I had to cut down because of my target audience.
I didn ’t create a double page spread for my preliminary task, but I have created 2 different layouts for my music magazine double page spread. I have learnt from this that by lowering the amount of columns my article has, it is more appeal to my target audience because it looks like there is less writing, and the picture is bigger. Overall what I have learnt throughout the process from my preliminary task to my latest product is that of how I attract my target audience, from the colours, and layout to the amount of text and I pictures I use.
