Horror Trailers - Part 4
What have you learnt from audience feedback?
I have learnt that that the majority of the audience liked the intertitles that we used in our
horror trailer, the audience also said that there was a good use of cinematography and the
jump scare in our trailer was effective. The feedback also said that the trailer was intense
with a good use of fast paced scenes, good sound effects, good narrative and good editing.
I have also learnt that there was particular things that we need to work on for our trailer
from the audience feedback we received. Some of the suggested improvements were about
using less screams during the trailer and not to use repetitive shots. Also at the time we
needed music on our trailer which we have now included to make it better, the feedback also
suggested that we needed to add more backstory to the horror trailer and have a bit more
dialogue. Although the majority of the feedback said they liked the intertitles we also had
also been suggested to cut down the amount of intertitles used in our trailer. The last
suggested improvement from the audience feedback is that we need to use more variety in
our setting which was in a house.
What praise and criticism was highlighted in your focus group
screening?
The Positive feedback which was received stated:
 Good intertitles
 Good varied use of cinematography
 Jump scare was effective
 Good gore effects
 Loudness emphasises drama
 Intense
 Good use of fast paced montage
 Sound effects work well
 Good narrative
 Good editing
The Suggested Improvements included:
 Needs Music
 More backstory
 Tidy some scenes up (editing)
 Less intertitles
 More variety in setting
 Too many screams
 Repetitive shots
 More dialogue
Which points did you agree/disagree with?
The Suggested Improvements included:
 Needs Music – I agreed that we needed to add music which we were going to add but we hadn’t got
round to it at the time that we showed our trailer to the class.
 More backstory – Personally I could easily understand the story plot of the horror trailer but I can see
how people who haven’t heard about the trailer may not completely understand the plot.
 Tidy some scenes up (editing) – I agree with this as nothing is perfect and there will always be things
we could improve such as cutting the time down on scenes and editing the brightness/contrast etc.
 Less intertitles – I disagree with this suggested improvement because I think the trailer is good with
the amount we have used. Also we had really positive feedback regarding our intertitles so I don’t
agree with it.
 More variety in setting – I agree that we could use more of a variety of settings but considering the plot
and the fact it’s a horror trailer its hard to use a number of locations as it could take away the scary
factor from our trailer.
 Too many screams – I agree that we did use a lot of screams in our trailer but this also put the
audience on edge and made the audience feel uncomfortable watching our trailer which is obviously
what you want to achieve with a horror trailer.
 Repetitive shots – I disagree with this suggested improvement as I don’t think we used repetitive shots
in our trailer. It might have seemed like it because of the setting of the house we filmed the trailer in
but I disagree that we used repetitive shots.
 More dialogue – We could have used more dialogue to explain the background story behind the horror
trailer I will agree with this suggested improvement as we try to take it on board and help the audience
to be able to understand our trailer.
What score did your trailer receive and were you happy with
it?
The Scores we received from the audience feedback were as followed:
3, 3, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 7
Which lead to our average score being 5.2.
The reason our score was low is because we hadn’t added any music to it at the point that we showed our
trailer to the class. I genuinely believe if we had showed the class our trailer with music we would have
recieved an average score of around 7/8. I was obviously not very happy with this score but I know that
this was a rough copy of our trailer which was missing music at the time which is a major part of the
horror trailer as it sets the intensity of the trailer and also entertains the audience.
What changes did you make after the focus group?
After the focus groups feedback we added music to our trailer to set the genre to make it
clearer that it’s a horror trailer & to also entertain and make the audience feel uneasy whilst
watching our trailer. We also tidied some scenes up in the trailer by cutting the time of
scenes and this made the trailer flow better and come together. We also took a few intertitles
out of the trailer because although the feedback from the focus group showed us that the
audience liked the intertitles, it also told us that they thought that we used to many, so we
cut them down slightly.
I believe by making these changes it has helped our horror trailer as we have tried to
improve our horror trailer from the feedback we received from the focus group and by
adding music it has made our horror trailer a lot better than it was originally.

-Body horror wasn’t very realistic
-Scream needs to be louder
-More Dialogue
-Lower age rating from 18 to 15

Evaluation part 4

  • 2. What have you learnt from audience feedback? I have learnt that that the majority of the audience liked the intertitles that we used in our horror trailer, the audience also said that there was a good use of cinematography and the jump scare in our trailer was effective. The feedback also said that the trailer was intense with a good use of fast paced scenes, good sound effects, good narrative and good editing. I have also learnt that there was particular things that we need to work on for our trailer from the audience feedback we received. Some of the suggested improvements were about using less screams during the trailer and not to use repetitive shots. Also at the time we needed music on our trailer which we have now included to make it better, the feedback also suggested that we needed to add more backstory to the horror trailer and have a bit more dialogue. Although the majority of the feedback said they liked the intertitles we also had also been suggested to cut down the amount of intertitles used in our trailer. The last suggested improvement from the audience feedback is that we need to use more variety in our setting which was in a house.
  • 3. What praise and criticism was highlighted in your focus group screening? The Positive feedback which was received stated:  Good intertitles  Good varied use of cinematography  Jump scare was effective  Good gore effects  Loudness emphasises drama  Intense  Good use of fast paced montage  Sound effects work well  Good narrative  Good editing The Suggested Improvements included:  Needs Music  More backstory  Tidy some scenes up (editing)  Less intertitles  More variety in setting  Too many screams  Repetitive shots  More dialogue
  • 4. Which points did you agree/disagree with? The Suggested Improvements included:  Needs Music – I agreed that we needed to add music which we were going to add but we hadn’t got round to it at the time that we showed our trailer to the class.  More backstory – Personally I could easily understand the story plot of the horror trailer but I can see how people who haven’t heard about the trailer may not completely understand the plot.  Tidy some scenes up (editing) – I agree with this as nothing is perfect and there will always be things we could improve such as cutting the time down on scenes and editing the brightness/contrast etc.  Less intertitles – I disagree with this suggested improvement because I think the trailer is good with the amount we have used. Also we had really positive feedback regarding our intertitles so I don’t agree with it.  More variety in setting – I agree that we could use more of a variety of settings but considering the plot and the fact it’s a horror trailer its hard to use a number of locations as it could take away the scary factor from our trailer.  Too many screams – I agree that we did use a lot of screams in our trailer but this also put the audience on edge and made the audience feel uncomfortable watching our trailer which is obviously what you want to achieve with a horror trailer.  Repetitive shots – I disagree with this suggested improvement as I don’t think we used repetitive shots in our trailer. It might have seemed like it because of the setting of the house we filmed the trailer in but I disagree that we used repetitive shots.  More dialogue – We could have used more dialogue to explain the background story behind the horror trailer I will agree with this suggested improvement as we try to take it on board and help the audience to be able to understand our trailer.
  • 5. What score did your trailer receive and were you happy with it? The Scores we received from the audience feedback were as followed: 3, 3, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 7 Which lead to our average score being 5.2. The reason our score was low is because we hadn’t added any music to it at the point that we showed our trailer to the class. I genuinely believe if we had showed the class our trailer with music we would have recieved an average score of around 7/8. I was obviously not very happy with this score but I know that this was a rough copy of our trailer which was missing music at the time which is a major part of the horror trailer as it sets the intensity of the trailer and also entertains the audience.
  • 6. What changes did you make after the focus group? After the focus groups feedback we added music to our trailer to set the genre to make it clearer that it’s a horror trailer & to also entertain and make the audience feel uneasy whilst watching our trailer. We also tidied some scenes up in the trailer by cutting the time of scenes and this made the trailer flow better and come together. We also took a few intertitles out of the trailer because although the feedback from the focus group showed us that the audience liked the intertitles, it also told us that they thought that we used to many, so we cut them down slightly. I believe by making these changes it has helped our horror trailer as we have tried to improve our horror trailer from the feedback we received from the focus group and by adding music it has made our horror trailer a lot better than it was originally.
