Horror Trailers - Evaluation Part 1
How did your horror trailer fit the
horror genre?
My trailer fitted the horror genre because we included body
horror in the trailer such as when Leo the main character gets
his arm scratched open by the demon and is left with bleeding
scratch marks down his arm. Another gore scene we have in our
trailer is when the demon is holding the knife and stabs
someone as they walk through the door. Horror movies that
inspired me were films such as Evil Dead which is known for its
gore scenes and other horror films such as Pyscho which makes
the audience have to think to try to understand the film. We put
a mixture of ideas from these films such as including body
horror but also having that psychological edge in our trailer in
order to create a horror trailer for all fans of horror’s sub-genres
to enjoy. Our trailer contains psychological horror because a
demon is the evil character and obviously because the audience
or the characters in the film can’t see the demon it makes the
trailer even more creepy.
How does the trailer fit the conventions
of horror trailers?
The setting for our horror trailer was in a house which was the main characters Leo’s house
and the demon was in the house creating noises and making Leo go crazy. We also included a
variety of high and low angles in our trailer to show fear from the characters. Leo also
screamed a lot to make disturbing sounds to make the audience be on edge when watching
our trailer. Props that we used identified our main character Leo as a ex cop who has literally
lost the plot, drinking vodka and popping pills. The theme of the horror trailer was depression
as Leo had lost his job as a police officer after shooting a child and is now depressed. He can’t
forget what he did and has resorted to getting wasted every day. A trailer which I wanted to
recreate the style of for our trailer was ‘The Conjuring’ because the music made the trailer
really creepy but kept the audience watching to see what happened to the woman who was
being tormented by the demon which is similar to our trailer in certain aspects because of the
demon tormenting the main characters. We used fast paced scenes with the main character
Leo screaming close up to the camera to create jump scares and to make the audience feel
uncomfortable whilst watching the trailer.
What auteur influence did you bring to
your trailer?
Auteurs such as Alfred Hitchcock influenced me on for my horror trailer
because Alfred Hitchcock made Psycho which is one of the best psychological
horror’s of all time which raised the standard for horror films to a completely
different level. Another auteur that inspired me was George Romero who
made Night of the Living Dead (1968) and Dawn of the Dead (1979) which was
a great horror film full of gore and an absolute thriller. George Romero
influenced me because he was unlike other auteurs he went against the
stereotypical character roles and had a black guy (Peter) as the male hero and
a blonde woman as a female survivor (Francine) ,which at that time no other
horror films did. My trailer is distinctive because of the gore scenes such as the
scratches down the arm and the distinct stabbing scene which was by the
demon so you couldn’t see the who was holding the knife or who got stabbed
and that is why our trailer was unique. Our trailer did reflect its historical
context as the setting was in a modern house which represents life today as
the majority of the country live in modern houses & the ongoing problems in
society with the post traumatic stress disorder and alcohol abuse.
