The student used the magnetic lasso tool to create layers and isolate parts of the image like their shirt. They added detail to the shirt using the round brush tool matched to the shirt color. Facial features were made using ellipse tool for eyes and round brush for nose and mouth. A background layer was added and filled with color. The student found the round brush hard to control for outlines. The ellipse tool was difficult to make eyes the same size and aligned. Adding shirt detail was time-consuming. The magnetic lasso tool sometimes confused colors. Completing the task on time, the portrait resembled the example but could be improved with added details like hair highlights and shading.

1. Which tools did you use to complete the task and describe how you used
them to complete your self-portrait?
To create my self-portrait the tools I used where the magnetic lasso tool,
this helped me create layers, after going round the shape from the
original layer I could then make a new one, and then alter the separate
layer. This is when I could fill in the shape to make a cartoon character
effect.
After going round the shape of the t shirt once I then added another layer
so that I could incorporate more detail into the shirt. To do this I used
the round blunt medium stiff brush, I then took a sample using the
colour picker of my shirt from the original photo to get the closest colour
to my shirt. Then out lined that colour on the new layer. With the same
brush I went round all the out sides of the portrait, and added more
detail, to be able to see the shirt pocket, and buttons also to be able to
see my face shape, and make the hair stand out from the background.
To create the face features I used the ellipse tool to circle around my
eyes, then I used the round blunt medium stiff brush to create the
mouth, and nose lines.
For the final part of my portrait I created a new layer and dragged it to
the bottom just above the original photo, then I used the bucket to fill
the background in with one solid colour which meant to portrait was
then complete.
2. Were there any parts of the task/specific tools which you found difficult
and if so, what were they and why?
During the task I especial found searching for the right tool hard, as I am not use
to the software it was all new. The round blunt medium stiff brush was especially
hard to control, and make look professional as you needed a steady hand to draw
with, to give the outlines emphasise for the portrait. I’m still not quite sure the
ellipse tool went well, as it is hard to make the same the same size, also to be in
line with each other to make the eyes. Finding adding the detail to the shirt was
very time consuming, although when it was finished it had a really good effect.
The magnetic lasso tool was difficult as it kept confusing the colours it had to
follow with the background, and if it moved out of place I had to start all over
again drawing round the shape .I did figure out how to control it a bit more ,you
had to click every so often so it didn’t get confused with other colours. At one
point in the making I had a problem with the bucket tool as instead of filling it
with a colour it filled it with a bubble effect, which was soon sorted out by
changing the tools settings.

2. 3. Finally, how successful were you in completing the given brief and what
improvements would you make next time.
I would say I was successful that I got the portrait done in time, and made it
look like a face. Putting detail on the shirt was successful as it made the
portrait look more professional. To improve I would add more detail into the
portrait such as putting highlights in my hair, creating shading, or creating a
background. This would make sure the portrait looked more like me, as now it
doesn’t quite look like me, but there is a resemblance. The portrait does look
like a character from the blur cover which was our example to apply the
techniques and effects from.
