- 1. How my media product uses, develops and challenges forms and conventions of real media products. - My first example of challenging magazine conventions is in the masthead of the front cover. I have used a font named “TIZA” because of its rough and ragged style, which I felt represented my chosen genre of music. However, similar magazines such as NME and Q magazine use fairly simple fonts for their respective mastheads. I have also followed conventions of the rock/indie music genre by using a colour scheme of red, white and black (in the masthead and throughout the other pages).The only time this colour scheme changes is for the double page spread, where I use colours more relevant for the artist. This convention is regularly used by rock/indie magazines because of its masculine yet simple look. This will also be attractive to my mostly male target audience.
- 2. Contents page My contents page also follows the conventions of music magazines. Almost all of the contents page I researched were set out in columns, so I have used this technique. This helps the reader to easily determine the sections of the magazine. I have also included a slight change of tone for every other article shown, to again help with separating the articles visually. I have also continued to use the “TIZA” font from my masthead on the title, “Contents” and a simpler font for the main text. I have included more images than might be expected on a contents page, because I feel this will engage my younger target audience.
- 3. Style of Photography - I have used an unconventional style of photography on my front cover. I have chosen to use a live action shot of the artist, who is looking away from the camera. The expected form would be to have an image of the group/artist posing in a set-up photo shoot and looking directly down the lens of the camera. I went against this convention because I felt a live shot gave the magazine a more intense feel and atmosphere. - For the contents page I have used a range of different styles for the images. This was done, to reflect that the magazine does have organised interviews and meetings with the bands, but also reviews live gigs and festivals. Images (Left to Right) – Image from my front cover, The White Stripes NME Cover, The Arctic Monkeys on the cover of Q. This shows the regularity of posed images being used for real front covers.
- 4. Writing style I have used language to create a positive atmosphere around the artist feature on my double page spread. I have described the artist as “flamboyant”, “energetic” and as having huge amounts of “natural flair”. These emotive words clearly give the idea that the writer has a good opinion of the artist. I have followed convention by writing in a journalistic prose style, and not using a ‘question and answer’ structure. I have mostly used an introductory sentence, followed by the artists view on the subject. Again, I have used the expected form of journalism. I have a clear discourse structure, with an introductory paragraph which gives basic information on him. This is followed by the main chunk of text, including long quotes from the artist, and finally an overview, explaining what the future holds for the musician.
- 5. Cover Lines - For my cover lines, I have mostly followed codes and conventions of indie-rock magazines. I have a main line (The name of the featured artist or article) followed by a slightly longer line giving a little extra detail. They have been written in a different font to the masthead, to add clarity and separate the text. The text also follows the expected colour scheme, for continuity.
