Evaluation Task

In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
 • My front cover is designed around the MOD NME originals
front cover. It represents a similar layout and also similar
colour referencing. This allowed me to get a better feel for
the music scene and the types of magazines that were
   already on the market.

I wanted to keep the original MOD target
symbol and include it within the front
                        cover of my magazine.

The main image on my Magazine is an image of an
artist, this would be a typical convention of music
magazines, He is the most dominant image in the
magazine, this draws in the audiences attention and
allows them to relate to something they may like.
This is my mast head and strap line, these are also
used to draw the reader in, I chose a style of writing
that would relate to my genre of music. The ‘rain man’
title was decided because of the idea of it raining
down upon you, its always there, the only thing you
can do is try and hide from it. The mast head is
typically at the top of the magazine cover or slightly to
                                       the left third.

This is a cover line and is usually
used to give the reader a sneak
preview of what is within the
magazine, this again is a generic
magazine convention.

This is the top and bottom strips to my I placed a
music magazine, they are used to barcode on the
advertise various subjects either within magazine
the magazine or companies sponsoring cover to make
the magazine. Both these strips colour the magazine

cover, this makes them stand out and genuine and
 easily readable. realistic.
My contents page again carries on the title of
the magazine but as a logo, this takes up less
room and allows space for other more
meaningful features on this page. I placed a
small image of the magazine and a subscription
next to it, this could let people subscribe to the
magazine and get a weekly issue. I still included
the rule of thirds.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The social group I chose to base my magazine around was the ‘Grime scene’ however this
slowly expanded into the ‘mod culture’ I did this to broaden my audience and try to not make
the magazine so negative. The images on the front cover represent the MOD industry but the
quotes on there represent the Grime ‘prepare for the NWO’.
The term ‘MOD’ was taken from the word ‘Modernist’ this scene originated in London in the
late 1950’s and peaked in the mid 1960’s. The mod culture is still going strong today, it is
represented mainly by the ‘rebellious’ youths and the fashion which is expensive and quite
individual. The rebellious factor helps relate this scene to the Grime one. It does this by
bringing ideas that go against government issues and stand up for peoples wrights.
The music related to the ‘mod scene’ is still being released by such bands as ‘beady eye’ and
‘high flying birds’ some websites that represent this scene are such ones as
http://www.modculture.co.uk/
this site covers a whole variety of different aspects of the scene, such as: clothing ranges,
different news, music and scooting, plus much more.

What kind of media institution might distribute your
             media product and why?
IPC Media produces over 60 iconic media brands
Owned by ‘time warner’ one of the big 6, which
suggests they are very influential and have a lot of
                power within the magazine industry.

         MAGAZINES: OVER 70 MAGAZINES INCLUDING
         SALES: £95 MILLION PER YEAR
         OWNERSHIP: INDIPENDENT
         SPECIALISM: WIDE VARIATION
AWARDS: WON NUMEROUSE PPA AWARDS, AWARD FOR EMPLOYEES GENEROSITY
CONCLUSION: WOULD NOT BE SUITABLE AS IT ONLY PUBLISHS ITS OWN
MAGAZINES, IT IS AN INDIPENDEDNT COMPANY

           MAGAZINES: 100 MAGAZINES
           OWNERSHIP: INDIPENDENT
           SPECIALISM: VARIATION
CONCLUSION: WOULD BE SUITABLE AS THEY PUBLISH A WIDE
           VARIATION OF MAGAZINES.
How did you attract/address your audience?
TO ATTRACT MY AUDIENCE I USED THINGS THAT WOULD INTEREST THE GENRE IT WAS
BASED AROUND, SUCH AS UPCOMING NEWS OF ARTISTS BASED AROUND THAT CULTURE. I
ALSO ATRACTED MY AUDIENCE BY THE USE OF IMAGES, THESE IMAGES ARE
REPRESENTATIVE OF THIS MUSIC SCENE E.G. THE MOD LOGO OR TARGET. I HAVE
CONSTANTLY KEPT THE SAME CLOUR SCHEME AND REPEATED A LOT OF WORDS, THIS WILL
HELP THE READER/AUDIENCE TAKE IT ALL IN AND CARRY ON READING IT. I HAVE RELATED A
LOT OF MY ARTICLES TO THINGS THAT MIGHT INTEREST THIS AUDIENCE AND HELP THEM
ABSORB THE INFORMATION, THIS WILL EXCITE THE AUDIENCE AND MAKE THEM FEEL A
PART OF THE CULTURE AND GROUP. FOR MY PHOTOGRAPHY I LOOKED AT EXISTING
MAGAZINES AND HOW THEIR PHOTO’S WERE TAKEN, MOST OF WHICH HAD THE CAMERA
POINTING DOWN ON THE ARTISTS, I THEN DID A SIMILAR THING FOR MY PHOTO’S AND
MADE THE ARTIST SEEM AS THOUGH THEY ARE LOOKING UP AT THE AUDIENCE.
