4. Publishers and circulations.
• NME is published by IPC media.
• Its circulation is 56,284, which has gone up from the June
2010 circulation of 33,875. However In the first half of
2010, the magazine's circulation was 33,875, 53% down on
a 2003 figure of 72,442. This really shows how circulation
figures can fluctuate, this may be because of the content or
look of the magazine, they increase because the magazine
is actually publishing a magazine with content that people
will actually pay for. However this may also come down to
how popular music now is as well. Festivals are becoming
increasingly popular and with new technologies such as
iPods, you can now listen to music on the go. Making it very
much a zeitgeist.
5. NME magazine audience
The magazine target audience is men aged 17-30 and the
average age of the reader is 25. Its audience consists of
73% male and 27% female, this shows they must be
doing something right.
The way a magazine advertises itself is a lot to do with
this. A music magazine has got to appeal to its target
audience. They use a number of ways to
advertise, such as:
• Own website, which gets 5,223,502 visits per month.
• Radio
• Mobile
• Magazine.
6. Kerrang! Magazine
Here is Kerrang! It is a music magazine
with the genre of rock. Music
magazines still have the same
conventions such as masthead, tagline,
cover lines, pull quotes and cover image
however I believe magazines change
their format so it suits their genre and
target audience. When comparing this
music magazine to NME you can
instantly tell the genre of the music by
the style of the magazine with things
like the artists on the cover and even
things like the font. Kerrang’s cover is
more busy and gives us that rock ‘n’ roll
feel whereas NME’s cover is more
Photo I took of Kerrang! magazine simple and stylises to a more
alternative audience.
7. Applying this to my music magazine
I need to think of these elements when
producing my music magazine. I need to
carefully adapt the style, format and contents
of my magazine so it not only suits my target
audience but also goes with the genre of my
magazine. I will now create a questionnaire
and give it to my chosen target audience on
what I should include in my music magazine.
