Evaluation 2:
How does your media product represent social groups?
My selected social group:
• The main group that I chose to
represent in my film were young
people between the ages of 15
and 24. I chose to represent this
age group as this age range is
vital in a person’s life because
they conform to friendship
groups to achieve social
approval. Therefore, they will
want to stay trendy and watch
newly released movies and
television shows.
Stereotypes:
• In my film opening, I have tried to focus on using some
stereotypes in addition to changing them. In Britain, young
people are stereotyped to be troublemakers and a drain on
society. Physically they tend to wear clothes that are in
fashion. My focus was on young, working-class males who
stereotypically wear Nike, Adidas and Baggy Jeans. This
choice of clothing is stereotypically formed through news
where stories about stabbings are focused on working-class
males, who are prone to wear this type of clothing.
Costume:
• Morris’ costume is not the typical
Detective uniform worn. Often in
British crime thrillers, the good
guys are seen to be wearing suits
however, similar to The Bourne
Ultimatum, the good guys are seen
to be wearing every-day clothing. I
have selected the uniform to be
this way so that I do not follow the
typical uniform worn by Detectives
and break the stereotype.
However, I have not completely
changed the Detective uniform as
he wears smart shoes and tailored
trousers, despite his parka.
Relationship
• In my opening I decided to follow the stereotype
of typical detectives portrayed in many crime
thrillers. My inspiration for my film came from
Sherlock, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and
Snatch. I have specifically decided to focus on the
detective perspective of crimes like Sherlock. The
two detectives in Sherlock is Sherlock Holmes and
Dr. Watson. Their relationship is typical within
crime thrillers: a strong bond, although contrasting
in personalities. I have followed this with my two
main detectives: Detective Chief Inspector Clancy
and Detective Inspector Morris. Clancy is a stern,
strong willed character and Morris is lighter
hearted. This difference in character can create
friction, but one is nothing without the other.
Sensitivity:
• The main social issue that may
be taken from our opening is the
representation of criminals. One
of the main characters is
multiracial and since he is a
criminal it could be gathered
that people of colour are
criminals however, this is not
the case.
• My film targets the sensitive
issue of police brutality and
using someone of colour could
present how this is an issue that
needs to be resolved.
