This document evaluates Karis Hays' final media product, which is a music magazine. It discusses various aspects of the magazine's design and how it uses conventions of real music magazines. It describes the masthead, color scheme, fonts, and layout used throughout the magazine. It also discusses the target audience, how the magazine represents social groups, and what media institution might distribute it. Overall, the evaluation shows how the magazine challenges conventions by using a gender-neutral design and lower price point to attract a wide audience.
Karis Hays evaluated her media product, a music magazine. She discussed how her magazine used conventions of real magazines through its masthead design, consistent colors, and fonts. She modeled her magazine after publications like Q and NME. Karis also addressed representing social groups, her target audience of teens and young adults, and how she attracted readers through promotional techniques and an affordable price. She learned new technologies like InDesign, Photoshop, and SurveyMonkey in creating her magazine.
The document provides feedback from three teenagers, aged 12-16, on a mock magazine designed for a younger audience. They felt the magazine was appropriately designed for its target age group in terms of topics and design. However, they suggested changing the color scheme and font to better appeal to teenagers. They rated different aspects positively, particularly the layout, language, and resemblance to real magazines. Some improvements mentioned were using a more famous cover artist and varying the font style.
The document is a student magazine project evaluation. It provides details about how the student designed their magazine to target a young audience aged 10-16, including using bright colors, bold fonts, celebrity interviews, and a low price point. Feedback was collected from peers aged 12-16, who felt the magazine was generally well designed for its target audience but suggested some changes, like altering the color scheme and using a more widely known cover artist.
- The document discusses the process of creating a magazine cover, double-page spread, and contents page for a music magazine targeted at females aged 16-24.
- Feedback was received on an initial plain cover design, so brighter colors and rearranged text were used.
- Conventions like bright fonts, short articles, and many photos were used while also including some content for an older audience.
- The creator learned skills in Photoshop and how to plan and construct a magazine.
The document discusses pop music and media representation. It then provides details about how the author constructed their music magazine, including following conventions of real magazines, representing social groups, choosing a media institution for distribution, attracting their target audience of teenage girls and young women, and what they learned about technology from the process.
- The document discusses the construction of a music magazine focused on R&B. The front cover features a young black male model in trendy clothing, following conventions of typical R&B magazines.
- The magazine represents social groups by including other races on inside pages to expand the target audience beyond just black people. The language is informal to appeal to teenage and young adult readers.
- Major media institutions like Time Inc. that distribute similar magazines would be good places to distribute the magazine for wide accessibility. The target audience is teenagers and young adults who would find the celebrity coverage and music interesting.
The document summarizes a music magazine called "Notorious" that the author created. They took influence from real magazines like Q, VIBE, and NME. The front cover imitates VIBE and features an original musician. The contents page references Q's style. A double page spread was inspired by NME and features an article and DJ review. Feedback helped the author choose appropriate outfits, artists, and fonts to appeal to students and represent women and diversity in hip hop. Time Inc and Bauer Media would be good publishers due to their experience with similar magazines. Creating the magazine helped the author learn design skills.
My music magazine follows the typical forms and conventions of existing teen pop magazines like "Top of the Pops" through its use of color scheme, language, images and graphic features to attract its target audience of 12-16 year old girls. It represents this social group by featuring a young female pop star on the cover and in the main article who dresses and acts in a way that teenage girls can relate to. The magazine would be well suited for distribution by Immediate Media due to their experience publishing magazines for both older and younger audiences including "Top of the Pops".
The document summarizes the creation of a magazine targeted towards female teenagers interested in funky house music. Key points include:
- The magazine cover uses a large central image and follows conventions of music magazines in its layout and inclusion of artists. However, it uses bright bold colors and targets female teenagers specifically.
- The contents page lists sections in a clear format while challenging conventions by listing section titles vertically. It uses the same color scheme as the cover.
- The double page spread features a full length image and interview laid out in three columns in a red and white color scheme to match the cover image.

The magazine follows conventions of existing teen pop magazines through its use of color scheme, images, language and structure. It uses pink, white, black and red colors and girly images like hearts. The language is informal to appeal to its target 12-16 year old female audience. It represents this group through the portrayal of the female celebrity on the cover as youthful and through gossip-focused content. The magazine would be distributed by Immediate Media, which publishes BBC magazines and fills a gap in their market for this audience. The magazine aims to attract its audience through the cover image, buzz words, and informal colloquial language to make readers feel comfortable.

2. Feedback from Audience:
following my finished magazine, fellow classmates and other audiences
reviewed my magazine and gave me their comments on post-it notes
3. After receiving the many feedbacks on
what was good and bad, I decided to
improve my magazine to meet the
criteria of my audience.
4. I decided to keep my front cover the same as it
has all the usual music magazine conventions
that can attract a reader. Like the one on the
right, Rolling Stone magazine has a wide
audience and therefore is likely to have the
same audience as mine. I copied its black-on-
white theme but reversed it so my front cover is
filled with white font. Furthermore, I included
names of artists on the side and other plugs and
anchorage seen on the Rolling Stone one.
In order to attract my audiences, I used direct
mode of address like Katy Perry to form a
connection with the reader. I made the fonts
large and bold, whilst the anchorage in a graffiti
like font, to relate to modern teenagers,
specifically those who are exposed to urban
lifestyles where social activities thrive. I also
used Ayesha, who is Asian, to reflect the typical
PBRB audience. I didn’t put her in a seductive
pose, as my audience can be as young as 15 or
16.
5. I decided to improve my DPS because a lot of people didn’t like the dark theme and the restricted
space of the pulled quote. I took inspiration from this Ciara spread from Daze which has a similar
audience as mine, as their audience spans a wide range due to the vast topics they cover. I took
notice of the simple CIARA masthead on top with a short subtitle; except I made mine bigger to
mimic my article’s topic. Her pulled quote separates the article in half by taking up space, so I took
inspiration from that too. What I did differently was that I didn’t put other small picture inputs.
This helps attract my audience, which would ideally be 16-22 year olds, as they are old enough to
grasp and read articles with focus: they are not children, they do not need pictures and colour to be
given an incentive to read. This is accompanied by the use of semi-formal language, with the
occasional slang, to support the interests of both 16 year olds to the older ages.
6. Again, this is Daze magazine, so they have quite similar audiences to mine. I tried to attract my
audience by showing a variety of artists available in the magazine. I highlighted Kobe and Sarah’s
pictures with page numbers, as PBRB is mostly dominated by African Americans and favoured by the
same ethnic youths. I also found from my initial research that females tend to listen to PBRB more
than males. So the bigger picture focuses on Sarah so girls can relate and have a connection with her,
whilst the men may possibly be attracted by Sarah too. If not, they also have the option to check out
Kobe’s interview instead. I also used capital headings so that people can easily identify what areas o
the magazine interests them more. I also added a faux giveaway insert so people can generate more
interest and the magazine possibly gains brand loyalty.
8. BUZZ WORDS
I used the words “Exclusive!”, “new” and “latest” to attract a reader. This
makes them think that they will be missing out on some information, that
other magazines wont have, if they do not purchase the magazine. This is
further accompanied by the list of artists and competition mentioned on
the front cover: this might strike interests on a vast audience.
9. COLOURS
The use of colour is important. I kept to a strict, black and white theme for
most of the time, except in the contents page where the competition box
is a pink-ish gradient. I did this to match the picture of Sarah and create a
consistent matching theme. The black and white photo of Kobe contrasts
well, as it balances the page out. By using a black and white theme, this
creates a balanced interest for both male and female readers. However,
the prominence of pink in the contents page may suggest the ratio of
female to male demographic of PBRB listeners, which I found from my
initial survey.
