- CulturaItalia is the Portal of Italian Culture, promoted by the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities, in which are involved cultural institutions from all sectors and levels (national, regional and local). CulturaItalia aggregates 3,2 M of records of metadata from 37 partners, including thematic and regional aggregators bringing together a network of 96 museums, 115 libraries, 190 archives- As other National Aggregators, Culturaitalia played an important role in the establishment of Europeana and continous to play a key role in its development. Museums, archives, libraries and other cultural entities both public and private can participate by making content following common standards. The portal has also published over 25,000 editorials to disseminate cultural activities and partners collections. CulturaItalia is active in the main social channels, such as Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin with a community of more than 18.000 followers In the portal there are two specific sections: One named MuseiD-Italia, that is based on an integrated Digital Library, devoted to the most significant Italian museums, where one can search and browse information about 6.250 museums, 688 digital collections with 95.000 digital objects and dati.culturaitalia.it a section devoted to open data, where one finds a SPARQL END POINT for searching a selection of datasets available in Linked Open Data format and an OAI Provider that we use in order to send metadata to Europeana. CulturaItalia has so far sent selection 2,8 M record of metadata in CC0

- In the diagram you can see the aggregation workflow where the most important pillars are 3 thematic national aggregators, like SAN portal, the National Archival System and Internet Culturale, the portal of the Italian Libraries, also created and managed by ICCU and 8 Regional cross domain aggregators. and other 26 content providers from different sectors. The CulturaItalia repository is constantly updated by records of metadata in our specific format and then converted in other formats including Europeana.
- CulturaItalia’s staff helps both large and small cultural heritage institutions understand how to make their material work best in the digital environment. We’ve translated into Italian the booklet ‘The more you give, the more you get’ which presents ethos of the Europeana Publishing Framework. in June We organized a workshop to support cultural institutions in opening up their collections following Europeana’s guidelines and we want to keep on in this direction.
- During the workshop in June we started a campaign aimed at the updating of images from Tier 1 to Tier 2 or higher in CulturaItalia. We are receiving positive feedback from our content providers and getting higher quality images. Moreover we’ve updated the facets in CulturaItalia, adding those for licences, so it will be possible to filter content according to the Europeana Publishing Framework. At any rate the process is quite difficult in some cases, because Culturaitalia deals with thematic aggregators that in turn must ask to their providers for updated images and licences, before they update their repositories. So that, it will take time to update all the content. We’re achieving better results with museums and libraries, that are already providing good quality images.
- This is an example of a project involving libraries: the project ‘Rice of Literacy’, coordinated by the National Library of Serbia, is curating dedicated thematic collections such as Europeana Newspapers and Europeana Manuscripts. The project will deliver to Europeana approximately 1,500 manuscripts, 2,600 books and other print materials (pamphlets, postcards, flyers, booklets), and more than 200,000 pages of newspapers and magazines, mostly in Tier 2, covering period from the 4th to the mid-20th century. Thanks to the project, ICCU and its partners have been delivery to Europeana high quality images and curated records of metadata.
- At the moment CulturaItalia web site is under restyling, in order to make it compliant with the Digital Italy Agency (AgID) guidelines. The portal will be updated with a responsive web design and with improved browsing functionalities.

- Following our role as a bridge between Europeana and the Italian cultural institutions, we’ve presented in our portal the Impact Playbook, a toolkit for cultural heritage institutions on measuring the impact of investment in cultural heritage on the economy, innovation and society. We want to apply the playbook in the education sector to evaluate the impact of CulturaItalia and Europeana on the national educational systems.
- Stakeholders involved couls be High school (18+) and University in SSH students and teachers (2 groups) Benefits: What should the students know about the digital environment to safely and effectively use DCH resources? How do students search and use CulturaItalia/Europeana? How can they contribute to increase the value of the digital cultural heritage? What students’ needs should we take into consideration in order to render DC resources more accessible to them? Change pathway: By working with the playbook students will learn more about digital culture heritage, for example about rules on the re-use of content or indexing and cataloguing. On the other hand we want to understand better what are their needs that we should take into consideration for improving accessibility and usability of our systems. Goal: Increase discoverability, accessibility & use of cultural heritage data/collections; Promote a more mature awareness of digital culture; Support new initiatives in collaboration with educational sector

- The 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage shows the importance being given to cultural heritage as a pillar of the European Union, emphasizing its connection to education and the creative industries. ICCU’s initiatives will reinforce the role of Europeana, as European digital infrastructure to access, re-use digital culture heritage.
