Europeans first established ports along the coast of Africa in the 16th century to facilitate trade between Europe and Asia. During this time, Europeans also engaged in the slave trade, kidnapping Africans and forcing them to work in colonies in the Americas. In the late 19th century, the "Age of Imperialism" saw European powers aggressively establishing colonies in Africa to exploit its natural resources like gold, rubber, and diamonds. This resulted in much of Africa being divided among European colonial powers like Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, and Portugal, often without regard to existing ethnic and cultural boundaries.
