OER-based Degree Pathways: Emerging Trends and Lessons Learned at U.S. Commun...Achieving the Dream
The rising cost of textbooks has been cited by students as a major barrier to achieving their educational goals. A study by the U.S. based Student Public Interest Research Group (StudentPIRGs.org) found that almost half of students surveyed take fewer or different classes based on the prices of textbooks. Two-thirds of students skipped buying a textbook because of cost. U.S. community colleges have been promoting the adoption of high quality open educational resources (OER) to alleviate costs but the impact on students has been dependent on the availability of OER in varied subjects area. The emergence of OER-based pathways however has the potential to maximize impact for students who want to complete an associate degree or a career technical education (CTE) certificate.
OER-based degrees, also called “Zero-Textbook-Cost degrees”, are pathways to a degree or credential with no textbook costs. Faculty have redesigned all courses in the pathway to use open educational resources (OER) for instructional materials. These degrees are gaining in popularity particularly at community colleges where registering for these courses can save students up to 25% on the cost of attendance for a 2-year degree. Faculty also enjoy greater academic freedom when they can select and customize open materials to enhance student engagement and support learning outcomes. In practice, it has been shown that students following a guided pathway complete their educational degrees more quickly resulting in less costs and more career opportunities.
Hear from a panel of pioneering OER degree college leaders from Virginia, Washington, and California on how these degrees benefit their students and support their institutional mission and goals for open access and degree completion. In addition, panelists will share lessons learned for OER degree development and the challenges of sustaining and expanding the degrees across the institution.

This presentation is an update to last year's one.
It emphasizes that Moocs are increasingly debated as a potentially non efficient way to educate.
It also raises the point of the evolution of business and management schools business models, especially as these institutions face new entrants (start-ups) that try and get each a part of the business that was traditionnally devoted to business and management schools. This trend goes beyond countries, as it can be identified in different European Countries or in the US.

Academics working on online, blended and technology enhanced programmes and modules can oftentimes find themselves working in isolation from their teaching colleagues. Focused on providing the optimal student experience and with the usual demands on their time of a full teaching timetable they often don’t have the opportunity to look at emerging trends or technologies within their own discipline or indeed across disciplines.
A community of practice is defined by Wegner-Trayner as "a group of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do, and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly" and in establishing a TEL Community of Practice within WIT it is hoped that colleagues will have a forum to discuss, debate and discover best practice in the areas of online, blended and technology-enhanced learning. The COP will meet regularly with the focus being on community led initiatives and the sharing of and exchange of experiences.
This presentation will focus on the efforts that were taken within WIT on establishing a COP and document the journey taken so far. This has included a number of planning meetings, the publication of a number of staff newsletters, the holding of an end-of-semester showcase day: The Collective: Unexpected, together with a number of other events and activities aimed at building awareness and a sense of community. Accredited and non-accredited staff professional development activities and opportunities were also made available to staff across the institute.
Canvassing of support from Heads of School, Heads of Department and the Institute Executive led to the establishment and support of a COP becoming a key part of the newly drafted strategic plan as one of the actions aimed at improving the quality of the student learning experience.

Playing is associated to pleasure and fun whereas academic learning is associated to effort and hard work. Many research has shown the benefits of introducing games in academic teaching as a way to improve learning. Curiosity is also important when learning. Indeed, when curiosity is awakened, people learn without resistance. In order to improve the learning experience, a serious game was integrated in a MOOC. The use of a serious game as a form of evaluation in a MOOC is a true innovation in education: students would play a video game where different situations were presented and they would solve problems related to the courses.
Innovating in education is certainly a challenge. Although integrating a serious game in the MOOC platform needed a considerable amount of technical effort, it was an absolute success: the completion rate was high (31%) with a great percentage of young students (49%) following the courses.

A Tale of two MOOCs, M. Cisel & M. ManoMattias Mano
This paper discusses the evolution of learning engagement patterns and learners’ profiles
across sequential iterations in two MOOCs. Both courses were relatively stable over time from
the demographic point of view, with punctual but notable variations. In both cases, registrants
who completed the course tended to decrease in proportions over time as the proportion of
bystanders increased, but they were nevertheless responsible for most of the course activity in
terms of video consumption or quiz submission. We observed that the statistical associations
between engagement in the course and learners’ demographic variables were more acute in
specific tracks, suggesting that the impact of sociocultural and socioeconomic variables on
engagement patterns strongly depends on the context of the course.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:

Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
