2. WHAT IS SPORTSMANSHIP
To be an athlete of good
sportsmanship, you should:
Respect for your coaches and teammates
Respect for the coaches and players for the
opposing team, as well as the referees
Respect for the rules of the game
Play a fair game
Play with integrity, passion, and knowledge

3. OWNERS AND COACHES DISPLAYING GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP
Robert Kraft: Owner of the New England Patriots
In light of all the criticism surrounding the Patriots due to the Deflategate, Kraft does not
overreact and remains calm in front of the media. He remains strictly focused on his
team and does not overreact to others who may put him and the Patriots down. He
keeps a positive outlook and always exhibits a strong sense of pride and belief in his
team no matter what. Also, when he does get upset about something, he states his
beliefs on the matter and makes his thoughts and opinions known in a respectful
manner, rather than causing a scene which would reflect poorly on him and his
franchise. Kraft exemplifies sportsmanship because of the way he presents himself to
the sports world and his ability to not overreact and be respectful of the other teams,
coaches, and players within the NFL.

4. OWNERS AND COACHES DISPLAYING BAD SPORTSMANSHIP
John Tortorella: Coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets
Having coached four teams in the NHL, Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers, Vancouver Canucks,
and currently the Columbus Blue Jackets, he is notorious for his inability to maintain his temper. One
example, out of many, that Tortorella does not display good sportsmanship is during a game against
the Calgary Flames. He was the coach of the Canucks at the time and within the first two seconds of
the game, due to both teams placing their most physical players on the ice, 142 minutes worth of
penalties had been handed out. Tortorella reacted horribly to the Flame’s coach putting out his fourth
line to start the game and he made it known on the ice. However, after the first period, he was still
fuming and would not let it go. He charged down the Flames’ tunnel and started to brawl with the
coach himself. The Flames players had to restrain him and he was fined and suspended for his actions.
The NHL released a statement saying that, “Mr. Tortorella's actions in attempting to enter the Calgary
Flames locker room after the first period were both dangerous and an embarrassment to the
League...Coaches in the NHL bear the responsibility of providing leadership, even when emotions run
high, and Mr. Tortorella failed in his responsibility to the game." (ESPN.com). In addition, Tortorella is
also known to yell at players and other coaches as well as referees during games. This is bad
sportsmanship because he does not show respect for others.

Example of Ethical Health Care in Sports
When Rich Peverly (Dallas Stars) cardiac arrested on the bench in between shifts, the trainers
immediately took action and tended to the situation in a professional manner. They knew what
they were doing and how they would do it, and did not let the severity of the situation affect them
Rich Peverly was revived on the bench and brought to the hospital for further inspection,
despite his pleas to go back in the game
Example of Unethical Health Care in Sports
When a trainer had no clue how to handle a separated shoulder during one of my own hockey games
Unethical because if he is unable to tend to something as simple as popping a shoulder back in,
then how can he be expected to care for more serious injuries?

8. ATHLETES IN THEIR COMMUNITY- BAD EXAMPLE
Aaron Hernandez
He contributed to his community in a
negative way because instead of getting
involved in a good way, he chose the bad
way and became wrapped up with crime.
He is currently in jail for murder. He is
not the type of athlete kids should be
looking up to because he has done
nothing but let his life slip away as he
became involved in heavy crime.
Currently, he is linked to shooting six
different people, shootings which have
resulted in death, according to Rolling
Stones magazine.

9. GOOD FAN BEHAVIOR
Cheering on your team, respectfully
Respecting other teams, players, coaches, referees, and especially
other fans
Helping out others
Do NOT degrade your team, even when they play poorly
Have fun...don’t be that overly crazy person who ruins it for everyone
else

10. BAD FAN BEHAVIOR
Fighting with other fans
Degrading your team and the opposing team
Harassing fans of other teams
Fighting with other people in attendance
Being so obnoxious the experience is ruined for everyone
