This document discusses several issues related to defining and studying deviance in sports. It notes that forms and causes of deviance are diverse and no single theory can fully explain them. Behavior accepted in sports may be seen as deviant in other contexts. Deviance in sports often involves overconformity to established norms rather than rejection of norms, and training and performance have become medicalized. Theories of conflict, functionalism, and interactionism are discussed in relation to defining deviance. Hypotheses presented suggest deviance is more likely when social bonds normalize risk-taking, athletes are separated from communities, and athletes develop hubris.

Maidan Summit 2011 - Madhumita Das, International Centre for Research on WomenMaidan.in
Ms Madhumita Das started her presentation at Maidan Summit 2011 with the observation that women of this generation realize that sport can help change things for them. She emphasised on the need to have qualified, trained and experienced coaches who would eventually mentor young girls and women in overcoming social taboos and propel a sense of dignity within them.
Through a video-presentation called Parivartan (Hindi: change), she upheld the view that sport is a platform where a lot of exchange takes place, and this exchange could be tapped to drive change. Elaborating on examples from ICRW’s programme, she explained how with proper mentoring, boys and young men, when brought together with girls and young women, agree that the latter should be given equal opportunity in sport. She added that it could change the way they look at masculinity and respect differences.

Ethics and Sport Entrepreneurship 88.1 IntroductionSpoBetseyCalderon89
Ethics and Sport Entrepreneurship 8
8.1 Introduction
Sport is part of the social fabric of society and plays an important role in fostering
ethical behavior. This is evident in Austin (2017: 2) stating that there are “promi-
nent moral failings that exist in and around sport”. Ethics is an important issue in
sport and is constantly changing due to technological advances. The ethics of sport
changes with new knowledge developed about appropriate codes of conduct.
However, ethics is a diverse and debatable topic that needs to be understood
according to type of sport, cultural environment and existence of social problems.
Hervieux and Voltan (2016: 3) define social problems as “socially constructed and
based on conditions and conduct deemed troublesome by individuals and groups”.
In sport there are social problems that create ethical issues, which depend on the
environmental context.
The ethics of sport refers to the ways of regulating behaviours and expected
conduct in games involving physical or mental activity. Sport ethics is a distinctive
discipline that plays an important role in influencing other sport fields and is
entrepreneurial in three main ways. Firstly, through deliberate action about the
need for change and innovative thinking about the role of ethics in sport. This
means that there can be a purposive approach to integrating entrepreneurship in
sport ethics to provide a way to understand future behavior. This involves looking at
actions sport entities are taking in terms of being more proactive about future ethics
issues. In addition, it helps provide a sense of vision about the role ethics plays in
the development of sport. Secondly, there are unplanned or accidental forms of
entrepreneurship in sport ethics. This occurs when inadvertently there are changes
required in the understanding of ethics in sport due to technology advances. As
technology is altering quickly there needs to be societal changes about ethics. This
means often sport ethics is reactive instead of proactive about decisions they make
in terms of regulations. Thirdly, there are evolutionary forms of entrepreneurship in
sport ethics. This means that there are developments about people’s perceptions of
sport ethics in terms of how it is embedded in society. Some beliefs about ethics in

sport are traditional and culturally based that take time to change. However, other
values are tied to the way sport is seen in society.
There is assumption that socially motivated types of sport such as community
and non-profit are ethically sound. This is often not the case due to the strategies and
politics behind the offering of sport to the public. The question at the heart of the
intersection between sport ethics and entrepreneurship is how a ...

Armstrong, Neil et al. “Aerobic Fitness and Its Relationship to Sport, Exercise Training and Habitual Physical Activity During Youth.” British journal of sports medicine 45.11 (2011): 849–858. Web.
AIMTo analyse aerobic fitness and its relationship with sport participation, exercise training and habitual physical activity (HPA) during youth. METHODSStudies were located through computer searches of Medline, SPORT Discus and personal databases. Systematic reviews of time trends in aerobic fitness/performance, and exercise training and peak oxygen uptake (peak VO(2)) are reported. RESULTSPeak VO(2) increases with age and maturation. Boys' peak VO(2) is higher than girls'. Despite data showing a decrease in performance test estimates of aerobic fitness there is no compelling evidence to suggest that young people have low levels of peak VO(2) or that it is declining over time. The primary time constant of the VO(2) kinetics response to moderate and heavy intensity exercise slows with age and the VO(2) kinetics response to heavy intensity exercise is faster in boys. There is a negative correlation between lactate threshold as a percentage of peak VO(2) and age but differences related to maturation or sex remain to be proven. Young athletes have higher peak VO(2), a faster primary time constant and accumulate less blood lactate at the same relative exercise intensity than their untrained peers. Young people can increase their peak VO(2) through exercise training but a meaningful relationship between aerobic fitness and HPA has not been demonstrated. CONCLUSIONSDuring youth the responses of the components of aerobic fitness vary in relation to age, maturation and sex. Exercise training will enhance aerobic fitness but a relationship between young people's current HPA and aerobic fitness remains to be proven.
Caron, Jeffrey, and Bloom, Gordon. (2015). “Ethical Issues Surrounding Concussions and Player Safety in Professional Ice Hockey.” Neuroethics 8.1: 5–13. Web.
Concussions in professional sports have received increased attention, which is partly attributable to evidence that found concussion incidence rates were much higher than previously thought (Echlin et al. Journal of Neurosurgical Focus 29:1–10, 2010). Further to this, professional hockey players articulated how their concussion symptoms affected their professional careers, interpersonal relationships, and qualities of life (Caron et al. Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology 35:168–179, 2013). Researchers are beginning to associate multiple/repeated concussions with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a structural brain injury that is characterized by tau protein deposits in distinct areas of the brain (McKee et al. Brain 136:43–64, 2013). Taken together, concussions impact many people in the sporting community from current and former professional athletes and their fam ...

Before taking this class, I never realized how important and beneficial it would be for an athlete's to directly work with a sport psychologist. Many athletes might be experiencing some type of anxiety before performing or depression as a result of losing games or not performing as expected. Both anxiety and depression should be addressed with the help of a professional to help them not only physically but also mentally. Moreover, according to the author, another symptom that should be treated by a professional if experienced is lethargy, which "may prevent sports participants from training" (Williams, J. & Krane, V., 2021). This symptom can lead athletes to experience negative effects on their technical and decision-making skills.
Furthermore, the book talks about many different areas that can potentially affect performance. For example, I never considered that the athlete's sexual orientation, eating disorders, or use of alcohol or other substances (for performance purposes or as a result of peer pressure and acceptance) could affect their performance. Moreover, romantic and family relationships, as well as anger and aggression control, can also affect athletes psychologically and result in chronic stress. Chronic stress can make athletes become distracted from their objectives and, as Cooks-Campbell wrote, "lead to harmful mental and physical health issues" ( Cooks-Campbell, 2022). Therefore, having a multidisciplinary team of professionals would add great value as they would help overcome any of these issues as well as assist them with their body Image, overtraining problems, and physical injuries. I look forward to seeing how the sports psychology field continues to conduct more studies.

RESPONSE:
Hi Rosery,
I agree that as a sport psychologist helping an athlete come up with strategies to help combat their anxiety before a competition or depression after losing a game is highly important to building up their mental toughness. Williams and Krane (2021) discussed how building a trusting relationship with their athlete is instrumental to helping them achieve peak performance and strong mentalities, as well as when issues outside of their realm of expertise arise where they may need to refer their athlete to a specialized counselor. You mentioned how having a multidisciplinary team of professional would add value by helping the athlete overcome their issues of body image, overtraining and physical injuries, but what if the athlete does not want to talk to anyone beside their sport ps.
How race and ethnicity are defined. Race refers to a persons phys.docxadampcarr67227
How race and ethnicity are defined. Race refers to a person's physical appearance, such as skin color, eye color or even hair color. Ethnicity, on the other hand, relates to cultural factors such as nationality, culture, ancestry, language and beliefs.
How sport is both a positive and negative force for promoting racial and ethnic equality in society.Sports can help promote ethnic and racial equality in the society. This is because during these activities, people from different ethnic groups and races get to participate. In doing so, people get to see that they have the same potentials despite their differences. However, sports can also be negative forces for promotion of ethnic and racial equality. Emotions clearly run high in fast-paced competitive sport, such as football, but there needs to be an acknowledgement that using a person’s race, ethnicity or culture as a form of abuse is wrong. Racist behavior does not happen in isolation; it is a result of prejudices and/or lack of awareness
.Discuss the history of women's participation in sport before the 1850's. What were the barriers? In the 1800’s, participation of women in sports was discouraged or banned. In the cities, their passive involvement was always encouraged through attendance at horse races, regattas, cricket matches and other spectator sports. Women back then were seen as an inferior group. Sexism back then took control of all activities and this was all about the unfair treatment of women.
How Title IX affected women's sport participation. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, requires equal access for women in all facets of education, most notably athletics. It prohibits discrimination against girls and women in federally-funded education.
How increased sport participation by females has affected contemporary society.Participation of women in sports has brought about issues like gender equality. Whatever facilities women get should be as good as those men are using. This is unlike the past society where there was no such thing as equality, women were the minority group while men the dominant one. How does social class affect access or present barriers to participation in sport? Most sociologists define social class as a grouping based on similar social factors like wealth, income, education, and occupation. Social class plays a vital role in sports. It dictates who can participate in what sports and to what level of participation. The limiting factor associated with social class is money. Money is the means which to obtain the equipment and facilities necessary to partake in the sport, without money, one cannot perform organized sports.
Identify the different social classes in the U.S. and typical characteristics of each class. Discuss the opportunities for social mobility through sport.
In the United States, there are three main levels of classes that include the upper class, middle class and lower class. The upper-upper class includes those aristocratic and “.

3. Problems Faced WhenStudying Deviance in Sports Forms & causes of deviance are diverse, and no single theory can explain them Behavior accepted in sports may be deviant in other social situations
4. Problems Faced WhenStudying Deviance in Sports Deviance in sports often involves unquestioned acceptance of norms rather than a rejection of norms Training & performance have become medicalized
5. Problems Faced WhenStudying Deviance in Sports “If they had more rules and better enforcement, all this deviance would stop.” “Being too moralistic about our games is like going to the circus and being indignant about how the clowns act.”
6. Using Conflict Theory to Define Deviance Deviance involves behaviors that interfere with the interests of those with economic power The behavior of those who lack power is more likely to be labeled as deviant Those who deviate often are victims of exploitation in a system characterized by inequalities The problem of deviance will be minimal when power is equally distributed in society
7. Using Functionalist Theory to Define Deviance Deviance involves a rejection of accepted goals or the means of achieving goals in society Conformity is equated with morality Deviance is caused by faulty socialization or inconsistencies in the social system Deviance is controlled by getting tough and enforcing more rules more strictly
8. Using Interactionist & CriticalTheories to Define Deviance Most deviance in sports is not due to the moral bankruptcy of athletes or process of economic exploitation Much deviance in sports involves over conformity to established norms in sports Sport deviance must be understood in terms of the normative context of sport cultures and the emphasis on “the sport ethic”
11. The Sport Ethic A cluster of norms that many people in power and performance sports have accepted and reaffirmed as the dominant criteria for defining what it means, in their social worlds, to be an athlete and to successfully claim a identity as an athlete.
15. An athlete accepts no limits in the pursuit of possibilitiesSports are so exhilarating and thrilling that athletes want to play, and they will do almost anything to continue to do so Being selected by coaches and managers is more likely when athletes over conform to the sport ethic
16. Athletes Most Likely to Over-Conform to the Sport Ethic Those who have low self-esteem or are so eager to be accepted by their peers in sport that they will make whatever sacrifices they think others want them to make Those who see achievements in sport as their only way to get ahead, make themselves a name, and become important in the world
17. Social Processes in Elite Power & Performance Sports Bond athletes in ways that normalize over conformity to the sport ethic Separate athletes from the rest of the community while inspiring awe and admiration among community members Lead athletes to develop HUBRIS – that is, a sense of arrogance, separateness, and superiority
18. Hypotheses About DevianceAmong Athletes Deviance becomes more likely when Social bonds normalize risk taking Athletes are separated from the rest of the community Athletes develop extreme degrees of hubris When people in the community see athletes as being special because they engage in extreme behaviors
19.
20. Raise critical questions about the meaning, organization, and purpose of sportsCreate norms in sports that discourage overconformity to the sport ethic Help athletes to learn to strike a balance between accepting and questioning rules and norms in their sports
21. Research on Deviance Among Athletes Cheating, dirty play, fighting, & violence are less common today than in the past This historical finding contradicts popular perceptions. Many people think deviance is more common today because there are more rules than ever before, and expectations for conformity are greater.
22. Research on Deviance Among Athletes Off the Field Deviance Athletes do not have higher delinquency rates than those who do not play sports Data on academic cheating is inconclusive Athletes have higher rates of alcohol use & binge drinking Felony rates among adult athletes do not seem to be out of control, but they do constitute a problem
23. Is Sport Participation a Cure for Deviant Behavior? Research suggests that playing organized sports might discourage deviance when they emphasize: 1. A philosophy of nonviolence 2. Respect for self and others 3. The importance of fitness and control over self 4. Confidence in physical skills 5. A sense of responsibility
24. DON’T FORGET Athletes are not the only ones in sports who engage in deviant behavior. Think of other examples involving: Coaches Administrators Team owners Agents Parents Spectators
