This study tested untested skin care lotions and creams on prison inmates over 30 days with repeated sunlamp exposures, developing a "patchwork" effect on their skin. It violated ethics by not allowing inmates to opt out, offering money that could coerce participation, and not testing products on animals first. The study should not have been conducted due to risks of harming vulnerable inmates. The data should not be used as consent was not informed. It brought criticism on researchers and negatively impacted research. Guidelines were later proposed to better protect prisoner subjects.
