Experience Report: Cloud Foundry Open Source Operations | anyninesanynines GmbH
Cloud Foundry and OpenStack are the biggest Open Source projects in their domain. As IaaS and PaaS walk hand in hand the idea of combining both worlds is close. anynines is running their public Cloud Foundry offering on top of OpenStack for more than three years with two years running on a self-hosted OpenStack setup. As head of public Paas operations Julian Weber has gained a lot of knowledge to share about setting up and operating Cloud Foundry installations. This presentation leads the audience through the journey of adopting the Cloud Foundry Open Source version and breeding it to a highly available and production ready Cloud Foundry setup. The listener is guided through the analysis of potential single points of failure in standard CF Open Source setups up to required changes in the Cloud Foundry OS release to reach our goal. As this talk is about Cloud Foundry operations we also need to talk about experiences with BOSH as a general purpose tool for software lifecycle management of big distributed systems and possible improvements to the BOSH tool set and workflows. The talk will enable advanced DevOps to dive deeper into the technical details of setting up production ready Cloud Foundry installations based on Cloud Foundry Open Source.

Optimizing Kubernetes Resource Requests/Limits for Cost-Efficiency and Latenc...Henning Jacobs
Kubernetes has the concept of resource requests and limits. Pods get scheduled on the nodes based on their requests and optionally limited in how much of the resource they can consume. Understanding and optimizing resource requests/limits is crucial both for reducing resource "slack" and ensuring application performance/low-latency. This talk shows our approach to monitoring and optimizing Kubernetes resources for 80+ clusters to achieve cost-efficiency and reducing impact for latency-critical applications. All shown tools are Open Source and can be applied to most Kubernetes deployments.
(WEB401) Optimizing Your Web Server on AWS | AWS re:Invent 2014Amazon Web Services
Tuning your EC2 web server will help you to improve application server throughput and cost-efficiency as well as reduce request latency. In this session we will walk through tactics to identify bottlenecks using tools such as CloudWatch in order to drive the appropriate allocation of EC2 and EBS resources. In addition, we will also be reviewing some performance optimizations and best practices for popular web servers such as Nginx and Apache in order to take advantage of the latest EC2 capabilities.
OSv is a new, high-performance OS for virtual machines in the cloud. Designed to run one application per guest with minimal overhead, OSv eliminates important bottlenecks for NoSQL applications through improvements in memory management, network I/O, and scheduling. And many important bottlenecks for NoSQL applications are tunable on a conventional OS, but do not require tuning in the OSv environment.
OSv is fully stateless and can be configured at runtime with cloud-init or through a REST API, with zero configuration files. OSv offers unified tracing from the application layer through the JVM and the OS kernel. Attendees will learn how to boot Cassandra in one second, and create a simple cluster in a minute.

Talk held at DevOps Gathering 2019 in Bochum on 2019-03-13.
Abstract: This talk will address one of the most common challenges of organizations adopting Kubernetes on a medium to large scale: how to keep cloud costs under control without babysitting each and every deployment and cluster configuration? How to operate 80+ Kubernetes clusters in a cost-efficient way for 200+ autonomous development teams?
This talk provides insights on how Zalando approaches this problem with central cost optimizations (e.g. Spot), cost monitoring/alerting, active measures to reduce resource slack, and automated cluster housekeeping. We will focus on how to ingrain cost efficiency in tooling and developer workflows while balancing rigid cost control with developer convenience and without impacting availability or performance. We will show our use case running Kubernetes on AWS, but all shown tools are open source and can be applied to most other infrastructure environments.

Accelerating Spark Genome Sequencing in Cloud—A Data Driven Approach, Case St...Spark Summit
Spark data processing is shifting from on-premises to cloud service to take advantage of its horizontal resource scalability, better data accessibility and easy manageability. However, fully utilizing the computational power, fast storage and networking offered by cloud service can be challenging without deep understanding of workload characterizations and proper software optimization expertise. In this presentation, we will use a Spark based programing framework – Genome Analysis Toolkit version 4 (GATK4, under development), as an example to present a process of configuring and optimizing a proficient Spark cluster on Google Cloud to speed up genome data processing. We will first introduce an in-house developed data profiling framework named PAT, and discuss how to use PAT to quickly establish the best combination of VM configurations and Spark configurations to fully utilize cloud hardware resources and Spark computational parallelism. In addition, we use PAT and other data profiling tools to identify and fix software hotspots in application. We will show a case study in which we identify a thread scalability issue of Java Instanceof operator. The fix in Scala language hugely improves performance of GATK4 and other Spark based workloads.

ODA Backup Restore Utility & ODA Rescue Live DiskRuggero Citton
When applying maintenance to Oracle Database Appliance, it's best practice to back up the ODA system environment (local system boot disk). DBAs have procedures to backup and recover the database but it is also important that you are able to backup and recover the environment that runs the database. This is especially useful if you encounter an issue during patching; you can quickly restore the system disk back to the pre-patch state.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
