At JCPenney, Black Friday is one of our most critical shopping periods, both in stores and increasingly online. Hundreds of millions of dollars are on the line for us in a narrow shopping window so scaling to handle the traffic and being able to deploy promotions and fix issues without disruption to the website and our business are critical. Our prior way of delivering applications was built on a waterfall model, locked in to a set of ISV vendor dependencies, with rigid silos. It was too slow and expensive to deploy changes and keep pace with our business. We needed an application delivery platform that can handle the scale of Black Friday, and allow us to adapt our systems as our business continues to evolve. In our DockerCon session, we will tell you how we are transforming JCPenney’s omnichannel business with Docker and open solutions like Jenkins, Spring cloud, Netflix OSS and Ansible. We went live in our first iteration in just two months, and then on-boarded over 30 services in the first 6 months. We learned quite a bit along the way and you'll hear why we made an important decision to switch from Docker Community Edition to Docker Enterprise Edition. Our new cloud-native, Dockerized systems handle over 100,000 deployments per year and can scale to handle events like Black Friday with zero issues.

Networking is the hardest component in any ones infrastructure, everything depends on it. Specifically when we have web scale infrastructure with tens of thousands of servers. eBay is investing heavily in Kubernetes and networking again is one of the areas we have the most difficulty with.
During the course of this talk we will go through various approaches we tried to make container networking conform to Kubernetes networking principles, while ensuring that it adapts to the existing networking models our infrastructure supports.
We would also cover how we have automated the process of setting up networking for Kubernetes clusters and how it offers seamless integration with non-Kubernetes workloads.

Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Hi, my name is Brandon, and I’m a solutions architect for AWS. I work with our partners in the AWS container ecosystem and with our customers that are running containers on AWS. We’re seeing customers of all sizes and across all vertical adopt containers on the cloud. Kubernetes, in particular, is rapidly growing on AWS.
Those customers are startups, or small, born in the cloud companies, that have application architectures naturally able to take advantage of design practices that work well with containers and the cloud
There are also large enterprises that are somewhere along a continuum in their journey to the cloud, and they see containers as a catalyst for moving to the cloud.
For these enterprises, it’s common to see new applications developed using containers in a cloud native way, but they can also make investments in containerizing monolithic legacy applications and realize benefits either while on premise, or more easily move them to the cloud.

You can leverage this experience through -Kube-aws is the tool that provides much of the aws integration. It essentially takes a config file, in which you populate some values, and it generates a CFN template according to your config. It’s also tied into KMS to encrypt secrets for you, and can distribute your worker nodes across AZs (note: not your control plane)
kube-aws is a templating engine for AWS Cloudformation templates
All assets (CloudFormation, userdata for instances) are declarative templates that can be checked into git and version controlled
Tectonic provides some nice functionality on AWS- a major one being a gui installer that gets you to a production ready state right off the bat. K8s is configured in a self-hosted fashion, which is simply using kubernetes to schedule its own components onto the cluster for ease of management.
