- Hi, my name is Brandon, and I’m a solutions architect for AWS. I work with our partners in the AWS container ecosystem and with our customers that are running containers on AWS. We’re seeing customers of all sizes and across all vertical adopt containers on the cloud. Kubernetes, in particular, is rapidly growing on AWS. Those customers are startups, or small, born in the cloud companies, that have application architectures naturally able to take advantage of design practices that work well with containers and the cloud There are also large enterprises that are somewhere along a continuum in their journey to the cloud, and they see containers as a catalyst for moving to the cloud. For these enterprises, it’s common to see new applications developed using containers in a cloud native way, but they can also make investments in containerizing monolithic legacy applications and realize benefits either while on premise, or more easily move them to the cloud. All of these customers have one thing in common, though, and that’s that they’ve identified AWS as their chosen cloud platform for running their containerized workloads, and many of these customers are using kubernetes as their chosen orchestration platform.
- What is it that these customers have identified? Well, Customers have selected AWS for years because we have proven ourselves committed to customer success. We believe we stand apart in the market because of six factors: Experience, Service Breadth and Depth, Pace of Innovation, Global Footprint, Pricing Philosophy, and Partner Ecosystem Our Partner ecosystem is here to help you take advantage of the aws platform and these attributes. CoreOS has been working with us to bring a kubernetes distribution, tectonic, to our customers to help them take advantage of the AWS platform.
- So, to put these attributes more in context, this is from James Hamilton’s talk last week at reinvent And to me, nothing really summarizes what we’re talking about like this slide- This graph demonstrates the scalability of the cloud- for prime day 2016, this spike is somewhere in the range of tens of thousands of servers being brought online- a reasonable sized datacenter that was brought online dynamically In response to real time load fluctuations. This is enormously powerful, and it allows companies to be agile, to be able to test things out without waiting for infrastructure, pay for what you need when your business demands it. The cost savings can be incredible as well- You’re not making an upfront investment in physical servers. And our friends at CoreOS are working to help you take advantage of this type of flexibility and scale- so you don’t have to work on the plumbing kubernetes into AWS yourself.

CoreOS are one of the leading contributers to kubernetes and they are setting the benchmark for how kubernetes is deployed and managed on the aws platform.
- You can leverage this experience through -Kube-aws is the tool that provides much of the aws integration. It essentially takes a config file, in which you populate some values, and it generates a CFN template according to your config. It’s also tied into KMS to encrypt secrets for you, and can distribute your worker nodes across AZs (note: not your control plane) kube-aws is a templating engine for AWS Cloudformation templates All assets (CloudFormation, userdata for instances) are declarative templates that can be checked into git and version controlled
- Tectonic provides some nice functionality on AWS- a major one being a gui installer that gets you to a production ready state right off the bat. K8s is configured in a self-hosted fashion, which is simply using kubernetes to schedule its own components onto the cluster for ease of management.
