Here is the Estonian system of
education.
3. The Estonian educational system consists of state,
municipal, public and private educational institutions.
There are currently 589 schools in Estonia.
Today’s education in Estonia is divided into

4. The education system is
based on four levels which
include the:
pre-school
education
basic
education
secondary/
vocational
education
higher
education
5. Pre-school education
Usually childrens go to the kindergarten from
age of 3 (or earlier) until age of 7.
They obtain the preschool education.
Pre-school prepares children for the feature of
the basic education system.
6. Basic school
Basic school is divided into 3 grades.
Years 1-3 Primary school
Years 4-6 Basic school
Years 7-9 Middle school
7. Basic school
There are final examinations at the end of each
grade:
Year 3 and 6 - Proficiency tests
Year 9 - students pass 3 basic school
examinations (GCSE): Estonian FL, Math and
an exmaninations in a subject chosen by the
pupil.
8. Basic school
When the students
leave a school, they
obtain the Basic
School Leaving
Certificate
9. Secondary school
Year 10-12
Age level from 16 to 19.
After graduating the basic school, most of the
students go to secondary school. The
alternative way is vocational schools.
Each school prepares its curriculum on the
basis of the national curriculum.
10. Secondary school
A student passes
3 state examinations
(A-level):
Estonian FL, English
FL, Math, school’s
examination and
protect a research.
Students obtain the Secondary
School Leaving Certificate
11. The assessment in the schools of Estonia
Secondary school:
A five-point scale

❏ 4-good
❏ 3-satisfactory
❏ 2-unsatisfactory
❏ 1-poor (fail)
Higher education:
A six-point scale
❏ 5 or A - excellent
❏ 4 or B - very good
❏ 3 or C - good

12. SCHOOL YEAR
There are 175 school days (35 weeks) in a school year.
The school year begin on September 1.
The dates of vacation are set each year through a regulation issued by Minister
of Education and Research.
Each school may apply for the introduction their vacation time.
Department of Education authorizes the introduction of a special vacation
schedule.
For example our school has the special vacation schedule.
14. Distance learning at TKVG
Apart of online courses we have days of
distance learning, once each half of an
academic year. It started as an experiment due
to up to date requirements. And now it has
been held for 8 years.
