This document describes how to calculate the capacitive power requirement needed to achieve a desired power factor. It explains key power concepts using complex planes and defines relationships between voltage, current, active power, reactive power, and power factor. The author provides equations to calculate the reactive power (kVAR) required based on the initial and desired power factors. It also describes how to select the rated kVAR of capacitors given the required kVAR and voltage ratings of the network and capacitors. An example calculation is included to demonstrate determining the kVAR required and selecting the appropriate capacitor rating to improve the power factor from 0.85 to 0.95 for a 1000 kW load with a 415V network voltage.
