Summary of Main Advantages of a Rotating Target

  •     Longevity - expectation is one target for the life of the facility
          – Reduced waste; independence of W-price development and manufacturer;
            high availability of facility; reduced life cycle cost.

  •     Radiation damage independent of horizontal bam profile
  •     No attached hot cell needed for replacement (if at all necessary)
          – Substantial cost savings; better utilization of building

  •     Reduced coolant activation; easier water loop
  •     Wear parts (bearings, drive and rotating union) can be replaced
        hands on.
  •     More neutron beam ports

RD on rotating target concept (CSNS mock-up test stand)

  • Test the validity of this concept and to gain first experience
    with a rotating target.

  • Provide first demonstration of the viability of the above concept
    by using a full model of the target head components and shaft
    and a dummy target with the right diameter and weight;

  • Confirm that acceptance criteria can be reached;

  • Gain experience in running a rotating target;

  • Verify certain parameters obtained by calculations.

  • To produce a sound basis for a decision as to whether or not
    CSNS wants to adopt a rotating target as the preferred solution.

CSNS Rotating Target Mock-up Stand

    • Use dummy disk of correct diameter and weight (adjust
      thickness)

    • Short circuit coolant flow in the disk with orifice to simulate
      pressure drop (allows replacement with “real” prototype)

    • Keep full length of shaft accessible to allow varying position
      of lower radial bearing

    • Use gear box and cardan joint to connect to motor

    • Use variable speed motor to explore range of revolution
      frequencies (0.5 – 5Hz)

Uses of Test Stand

         •     Use Test Stand to practice exchange of target bearing and
               rotating union.

         •     Practice greasing of bearing

         •     Test stand can be used to develop position monitoring for target
               disk, spill water recovery, monitoring of bearing, etc.

         •     At a later stage replace lower bearing support plate by target plug
               inner shielding block with integrated lower bearing.

         •     If available, replace dummy target by assembly demonstration
               target (SS or Al-alloy)

         •     The final target can be tested for tightness and smooth running
               on the test stand (acceptance criteria).

Summary of Main Advantages of a Rotating Target • Longevity - expectation is one target for the life of the facility – Reduced waste; independence of W-price development and manufacturer; high availability of facility; reduced life cycle cost. • Radiation damage independent of horizontal bam profile • No attached hot cell needed for replacement (if at all necessary) – Substantial cost savings; better utilization of building • Reduced coolant activation; easier water loop • Wear parts (bearings, drive and rotating union) can be replaced hands on. • More neutron beam ports Jia et.al, CSNS Rotating target, ESS-bilbao initiative , March 16-18, 2009

RD on rotating target concept (CSNS mock-up test stand) • Test the validity of this concept and to gain first experience with a rotating target. • Provide first demonstration of the viability of the above concept by using a full model of the target head components and shaft and a dummy target with the right diameter and weight; • Confirm that acceptance criteria can be reached; • Gain experience in running a rotating target; • Verify certain parameters obtained by calculations. • To produce a sound basis for a decision as to whether or not CSNS wants to adopt a rotating target as the preferred solution. Uses of Test Stand • Use Test Stand to practice exchange of target bearing and rotating union. • Practice greasing of bearing • Test stand can be used to develop position monitoring for target disk, spill water recovery, monitoring of bearing, etc. • At a later stage replace lower bearing support plate by target plug inner shielding block with integrated lower bearing. • If available, replace dummy target by assembly demonstration target (SS or Al-alloy) • The final target can be tested for tightness and smooth running on the test stand (acceptance criteria).
