Poverty and suffering is considered not out of the norm for many families in Pakistan. Many of
them have had to make enormous sacrifices in order to survive in these hard times. As seen in
the previous paragraph children who are to sacrifice their education to help the family during
times of poverty, may never really be able to receive an education later. For most families that are
in the same situation like Rafiq and his family, the basic necessities such as food and water that
others take for granted are now considered the highest priority in their lives. Though native born
families are the ones who suffer the most in poverty in Pakistan, there are also outsiders who suffer
just as much. One example is the children of Afghan refugees from Afghanistan. During the Afghan
War, many families in that region have been separated or killed during battles and abductions
conducted by the terrorist group Al Qaeda. This group has threatened almost virtually everyone in
the country that if they don t listen and obey their rules, they will have them executed or tortured.
Thus, many families have packed their belongings and have made long treks out of the war torn
nation. Once, they come into Pakistan, they expect their experience to be better than the one in
Afghanistan. And to a certain extent, some of that may be true. However, once they become

What does it mean to be queer? The Merriam Webster Dictionary states that queer is differing in
some odd way from what is usual or normal ( Definition of Queer ). By this definition, all humans
are queer in their own way. When looking at the novel Middlesex, written by Jeffery Eugenides,
and the graphic novel Fun Home, written by Alison Bechdel, queerness is seen in multiple
aspects within the characters and styles of writing. Eugenides writes Middlesex through the all
knowing character of Cal, who was born and raised a female but later discovered to have both
male and female genitals. During the time of puberty, her queerness becomes more present as she
realizes how much she differs from her classmates. When a doctor finally tells her that her genetic
makeup is male, Cal runs away to take on this new identity. Contrasting this to the graphic novel
Fun Home, Bechdel writes a memoir of her life, retelling the story of her familyand the revelation of
her sexual identity. A strong emphasis is put on Bechdel s father, who is found to have homosexual
tendencies, and the relationship the two form through their queerness. Queerness, in the sense of
non normativity, is seen within the texts of Middlesex and Fun Home and can be compared and

The author of The Monkey s Paw, W.W. Jacobs uses many literary techniques to create suspense.
The story is about an old man named Mr. White who gets a monkey s paw with magical powers,
he wishes for 200 pounds. He also loses his son during the process. To create suspense and convey
the point of the story Jacobs uses literary techniques such as, mood, imagery, and foreshadowing.
One of the first techniques he uses is foreshadowing. Before Sergeant Major Morris gives Mr.
