Culturally Responsive Literature and the Role of Technology in Improved Literacy Instruction
Moira Moynihan
Lipscomb University
In the quest to make education a more equitable, empowering force for all scholars, irrespective of
racial and demographic background, no fight garners as much urgency as that to close the literacy
gap. Whereas science, social studies, or math may or may not enter the daily discourse of a
wealthy family as it raises its child, reading will unquestionably monopolize a statistically
significant portion of child rearing time. Betty Hart and Todd R Risley outline the devastating
scale of this schism in their work The Early Catastrophe: The 30 Million Word Gap by Age 3, which

Marx s 1858 Grundrisse divides value into two distinct categories: use and exchange. Use value
refers to the utilitarian value garnered from something, whereas exchange value places monetary
value onto certain objects within a fiat currency system assuming there is no inherent worth in
something. The biggest argument against culturally responsive teaching within literacy comes from
a perceived lack of exchange value. True a capitalistic, patriarchal, white supremacist society does
not place substantial, if any, market value onto texts missing from the constructed Western Canon.
If education seeks to truly empower students, teachers must equip students with skills and
knowledge that has market exchange value. However, I argue that because culturally responsive
texts are a more effective way to build reading capacity, the loss of market exchange value is
dwarfed by the augmented use value that comes from being a strong, analytical reader. I will also
conceded that viewing literature through a class based lens exclusively diminishes the holistic
construction of literary worth, and I would argue for non economic benefits stemming from
reading, some of which exist simply as expanded thought processes. However, so long as a
dominant lens through which readers can be ability grouped is socio economic status, the economic
ramifications of reading cannot be

Lung Consolidation Case Study
Lung consolidations may have a variety of causes including infection, pulmonary embolism, lung
cancer and metastasis, compression atelectasis, obstructive atelectasis, and lung contusion
Additional sonographic signs that may help to determine the cause of lung consolidation include
the following: a)The quality of the deep margins of the consolidation.
b) The presence of comet tail reverberation artifacts at the far field margin.
c) The presence of air bronchogram(s).
d) The presence of fluid bronchogram(s).
e)The vascular pattern within the consolidation .
The consolidated region of the lung is visualized at LUS as an echo poor or tissue like image,
depending on the extent of air loss and fluid predominance, which is clearly different from the
normal pattern. The cause ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In pleuritic pain, LUS is superior to CXR and may allow visualization of radio occult pulmonary
conditions. In mechanically ventilated patients, LUS is more accurate than CXR in detecting and
distinguishing various types of consolidations
Characteristic ultrasonography findings of alveolar syndrome:
Consolidation: Intercostal scan shows a hypoechoic consolidated area that contains multiple
echogenic lines that represent an air bronchogram. The presence of dynamic air bronchogram
(branching echogenic structures with centrifuge movement with breathing) helps to rule out
obstructive atelectasia
Focal interstitial pattern: Focal interstitial pattern was defined as vertical hyperechoic comet tail
artefacts that arose strictly from the pleural line, spread to the edge of the screen without fading
and appeared focally instead of diffusely( Nafae et al.,2013).
Subpleural lesion: Subpleural lesion was defined as pleural based hypoechoic nodules with no
hyperechoic lines within it. It could be triangular, round, linear or polygonal

Distance Education Means Online Education
To most people in the 21st century, distance education means online education, the use of the
Internet to create a computer based learning connection between instructor and student
(Larreamendy Joerns Leinhardt, 2006). In today s increasingly technological world, nearly 70%
of top academic leaders agree that online learning is part of the academic world s future, and as of
2013, nearly 1/3 of higher educationstudents were enrolled in an online course (Kentnor, 2015).
Although distance educations rapid evolution began alongside the growth of technology in the late
1990s, the history of distance learning goes back much farther than modern technology.
First distance learning
The first educational occurrence that can be viewed as distance learning occurred in the 18th
century. Caleb Phillips took out an advertisement in the Boston Gazette that offered shorthand
lessons. Phillips s idea was to send lessons via the Postal Service, which some view not as actual
distance education because a lack of two way communication. Regardless, the basic principle of
distance learning was present (Kentnor, 2015). As cited in Kentnor (2015), according to Verduin
and Clark (1991), the first real distance educator was Issac Pitman, who taught shorthand by
correspondence via mailed postcards in 1840. Students mailed their work back to Pitman, thus
establishing the first true distance education. This method continued from the 19th to the early 20th
century, as desire for a college

The Chimney Sweeper in Innocence vs. The Chimney Sweeper in Experience
In William Blake s Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience, many of the poems correlate in
numerous aspects. For example, The Chimney
Sweeper is a key poem in both collections that portrays the soul of a child with both a naГЇve and
experienced persona. Blake uses the aspects of religion, light versus dark imagery, and the usage of
the chimney sweeper itself to convey the similarities and differences of the figure in both poems.

After Tom awakes from this dream, he was happy and warm with the knowledge that with God,
there was no need to fear death.
However, in Songs of Experience, the outlook on life and death is not so joyful. The religious
imagery is not so much as in Songs of
Innocence, possibly because people tend to believe more religiously when innocence dominates
terrible experiences. In the latter poem, however, the little black thing has been clothed in the
clothes of death by his parents forcing him to become a chimney sweeper. His parents have gone
to praise God and his Priest and King, who make up a heaven of our misery and the boy cannot
understand this as he
sings the notes of woe and not happiness. This chimney sweeper does not have the innocence and
hopefulness of the chimney sweeper in Songs of Innocence. This child possesses experience of
hardship and does not hold much faith in God and religion. This version of The Chimney
Sweeper lacks the hopefulness and faith found in the former version although it is the same setting,
factors, and occupation.
William Blake conveys both innocence and experience with the literary technique of light versus
dark imagery. In Songs of Innocence, Blake discusses the issue of soot on several instances. In the
beginning verse, the young chimney sweeper slept in soot, showing the incorruptibility and despair
of the young child. Also, Tom Dacre s
white hair was shaved so that the dark soot

Lab Report On The Mass Of Actual Aspirin ( Acetylsalicylic...
Abstract: This experiment utilizes skills of titration in order to find the percent mass of actual
aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) in store bought aspirin. Two steps and two kinds of titrations are
used. First, approximately 0.1 M NaOH solution was standardized using titration with KHP. KHP
was used because it does not absorb moisture when it is stored, and it is soluble in water. The
reaction that takes place in this reaction is a 1:1 mole ratio reaction. The titrationdetermines the
volume of NaOH solution needed to completely react with the known amount of KHP. This
makes the calculation of molarity of NaOH solution fairly easy. The average molarity calculated
was 0.09897 M. The final part of the experiment is a titration to indicate the amount of
acetylsalicylic acid present in approximately 0.5 g of store bought aspirin. The volume of
0.09897 M NaOH solution indicated the moles of NaOH that reacted with the aspirin. The
reaction between NaOH and acetylsalicylic acid is a 1:1 mole ratio reaction. The calculated mass
of acetylsalicylic acid was 0.3963g. This was divided by the initial amount of aspirin measured
(0.4976g), and multiplied by 100 to give the percent mass. This value is 79.66%. This particular
experiment may not be very accurate. Specifically, only two standardization trials were counted.
This may cause a less accurate measurement of NaOH solution molarity, ultimately leading to an
inaccurate percent mass of acetylsalicylic acid.

Bmw s Impact On The Manufacturing Of Cars
BMW begins its long history, which stretches for almost a hundred years, in Germany. BMW had
a major impact on the manufacturing of cars. Rapp needed a financial backer to do this and in
1916 he renamed the Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works). After a financial
problem with the company Rapp left. When Rapp left the company Franz Josef Popp took over.
He set up BMWas we know it today( BMW Early History Вќ).
In 1913 a German engineer Karl Friedrich Rapp who had been the early director of a successful
aircraft company, started his own business to make aircraft engines. He named the Rapp
Motorenwerke and set up shop in Munich Germany. He did this because the biggest buyer of his
engines was nearby. The company did very well and was contracted to build a large sum of V12
airplane engines to fill a very high demand. BMW made many aircraft engines during WWI.
After the war was lost the Versailles Treaty prohibited German companies from producing aircraft
and aircraft engines. BMW had to find a new way to stay in business and get income. Again and
again BMW had discussed getting into the car business but it was never really necessary until
now( History of BMW Вќ). At this time in history German s economy was very bad and inflation
was very high. BMW started to make low cost cars in early 1925. They were a success and BMW
made a full swing into the automobile business.
In 1930 BMW began work on a new four cylinder engine. The engine was advanced for its time but

The Digital Assistant, Or Pda
The personal digital assistant, or PDA, was a small hand held electronic device that was
intended for use as a simple organizer, including features like a calendar and tasks list. Today,
the PDA has fallen into disuse, replaced by its more popular and powerful successor: the smart
phone. Voice recognition technology is giving rebirth to the spirit of the PDA in the form of
new intelligent digital systems designed to help you manage your affairs. These reborn
personal assistants are gaining popularity in both consumer and business markets due to their
ability to streamline commonplace tasks. As new technologies are discovered, additional
applications and markets will be uncovered for this technology to take root in. A Brief History
The idea of digital personal assistants has been around in the public realm quite a while thanks
mainly to Hollywood since the 1960 s. Many movies back in the sixties would depict computers
or other devices that had the ability to plan and organize events with limited human interaction.
Due to the production of several science fiction titles such as Star Trek, Star Wars, and A Space
Odyssey, the early conceptions of such beings as cognitive personal assistants came to the public
eye. Early examples of such devices included Star Trek s talking computer, the Hal 9000, and
R2D2; devices that could in most cases assist or come up with plans instead of requiring humans to
do the organization, reasoning, or brainstorming of all factors in the decision

It may take four or five more generations of historians to find the answers but they will not give up
until all of the truth is uncovered. One day in the future the truth will surface and the whole world

Meriwether Lewis was a very famous man in history and will all ways be remembered for his
courageous things he did in his life. And the expeditions that he and Clark went on as a team.
Meriwether Lewis is still one of the most famous men in the world because no one knows what
really happened to him. Historians will never be happy until the truth is uncovered and the whole
world knows what really happen to one of the world s greatest men that ever lived.
In my opinion Meriwether Lewis was murdered, I can tell through his journal entries that he was
under a lot of stress and was having problems. But he was not the type of person that would
commit suicide. He tells about how he had a lot of enemies in his life and that he feared that one
day they would finally take care of him. I think that General Wilkinson was mad and hated
Meriwether, he thought that it would be easy to pay someone to kill him and that is what he did. I
think that if Jefferson had found out what had really happened then he would have made sure that

History Of The Netherlands During The 17th Century
In this essay a brief introduction to the history of the Netherlands in the 17th century will be
offered, including an overview of commerce, politics, social life, religion and art. The
composition will segue to a review of the most popular Dutch still life artists of the 17th century,
and then transition to the specific genre of floral still life. This naturally leads to a consideration
of techniques of the Dutch artists of that era and a succinct study of several of the most famous
Dutch floral still lives from the 1600s. The thesis of this investigation is floral still lives became a
popular specialty genre of 17th century Dutch painters, reflecting he advanced paintingtechniques
that grew in popularity over the century.
At one time or another many a nation has led the world militarily, economically, scientifically,
artistically and academically. So it was with the Netherlands whose greatest moments may have
been in the 17th century during what has been labeled The Dutch Golden Age . It received that
moniker because it was a country laden with an abundance of wealth in all aspects of life1. It was a
phenomenon that grew from a variety of factors, including the 30 year war that caused the division
of the Netherlands into North and South, and gave the Dutch Republic their independence.
Amsterdam, a port town, grew exponentially afterwards, as the shipping industry mushroomed and
skilled labor poured into the area. Surprisingly, the science behind the use of windmills to

Johnson Decision To Americanize The Vietnam War Essay
LBJ s decision to Americanize the war was not wise and well informed, an accurate answer for
U.S. defeat in Vietnam was the decision to Americanize the war. Influencing the belief that Johnson
decision to escalate appeared to have been predetermined; Johnson consistently appeared to be in
favor of increasing military in South Vietnam, and he only needed something to happen in order to
validate his reasoning for the increase of U.S. involvement. This something was the Tonkin Gulf
incident and this event became Johnson s basis to take all necessary measures to repel any armed

(Rotter, 77). When Dante B. Fascell said The president needed authority. Who cared about the facts
of the so called incident that would trigger this authority? So the resolution was just hammered right
on through by everyone (Young, 120); this recollection makes it appear as through the Tonkin Gulf
incident decision was not well informed. The resolution was the issue of Johnson s authority and
the potential that offensive measures in South Vietnam could lead to a third world war (Young,
121). Another example that Americanization was unwise and not well informed was Johnson
ignoring the George Ball about better solutions to help America leave the war. Once again it is the
issue with Johnson s authority, he constantly ignores other possibilities of leaving Vietnam. At the
end the Johnson administration would choose three tactics: bombing the North, intensify the war in
the South using U.S. troops, and concentration on pacification of the

Difference Between Variable Cost And Fixed Cost
Fixed Costs: Fixed costs are the costs that are independent of the amount of goods or services
produced by the business. For example rent, salaries.
For fixed costs, you have to pay them even if you do nothing.
Variable Costs: A variable cost can vary in relation to the amount of business activities. For example
raw material, energy usage, labour, logistics, etc.
Marginal Costs: It can be defined as the additional cost (increase or decrease) to total production
cost from producing one additional unit of good or service.
Marginal Revenue: It is the additional revenue that can be generated by selling one additional unit
of goods or services. In microeconomic theory, when marginal cost (MC) ... Show more content on

Current Ratio: Current ratio measures if a company has enough resources to meet its short term
obligations. It shows the proportion of current assets in relation to its current liabilities. The higher
the ratio, the more liquid the company is. The ideal current ratio is 2 for most enterprises. 1.5 is
also an acceptable ratio. Current ratio being under 1 indicates that company is having difficulties
and unable to meet its liabilities, making the company illiquid .
Try to keep your current ratio above 1.5, otherwise you ll go down fast.
Quick Ratio: It is a liquidity ratio that measures how quick a company can pay its liabilities. It
differs from Current Ratio because in quick ratio, inventory is excluded from current assets. The
reason why is that the inventory may not sell out so fast. So quick ratio quickly captures if your
company has enough liquidity, which is frequently used by banks, creditors, investors. Ideal ratio
would be 1:1 or

Film Analysis Of The Film The Scarlett Letter
The Scarlett Letter 1995 Film Analysis
The Scarlett Letter, is about a young mistress named Hester Prynne. In 1666, after moving to the
Massachusetts Bay Colony from England to await her husbands arrival, Hester beings to fall in
love with the town s pastor, Arthur Dimmesdale. Roger Prynne, Hester s husband, and all other
passengers of an English ship are presumed dead in the aftermath of an attack. After she and
Arthur consummate their love, Hester finds herself pregnant. Hester soon becomes the subject
of idle gossip among the colonists after she shares her radical thoughts and views on the Bible
and the Puritan way of life. Two of the other mistresses in the colony also witnessed Hester
become ill on two separate occasions during the morning hours, so she is called to appear before
the Elders of the colony to be accused of Heresy, Fornication, and Adultery. Hester is then
arrested and imprisoned for her indiscretion. On the day of giving birth to her bastard child,
Pearl, Hester is humiliated in front of the entire town and made to wear a red A for adulterer on
her chest and to also followed around by a drummer boy that bangs his drum wherever she goes in
public. Roger Prynne resurfaces and was never actually killed by the Indians, but was captured and
held prisoner. After learning about the scandal of his wife, Roger joins the colony under an alias,
Dr. Roger Chillingworth . Roger eventually scalps and kills a male colonist that he thought was
Arthur, and blames the murder on the Algonquian Indians, which prompts the declaration of war on
the Indians by the colonists. Roger commits suicide for his wrong doings, Hester and Arthur
abandon the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and the scarlet letter to set out for Carolina to start a new
life. I do believe that The Scarlett Letter is historically accurate. I think the writers and directors
accurately communicated the sense of historic time and place, it really felt like I left the 21st
century and stepped back in time. There are several pieces of evidence within the film that are
historically accurate. In one of the first scenes of the film, the narrator describes Hester Prynne as
she comes from England to the New World, My name is Pearl. This is the story

Relationships And The Family
Do all past relationships change who people are in their future, even if it s a good relationship?
All the answers to this will not be the same. Relationships can change people in a good way or in
a bad way. People can take these relationships to the heart and way too serious. Others wouldnВґt
take it too seriously and wouldn t care. Relationships can make people stronger and also people
can make them miserable. People can have a bad relationship with their family. For example, the

has to burn it and ends up burning his boss, the fire captain. Montag is shocked when they arrive
at his house and he comments, Why said Montag slowly, we ve stopped in front of my house

Influenza As An Influenza Virus
INTRODUCTION:Influenza, more commonly known as the flu , is a chameleon like infectious
disease, that presents itself with varying characteristics from year to year, due to the wavering
identity of the strain. Like HIV, influenza is an RNA virus, constantly changing its appearance and
adept at eluding recognition by the human immune system (Schneider, 2014). From its inception of
1918, influenzaclaims an average of 250,000 to 500,000 people worldwide, annually. Little is
known of the virus s origin however; recent studies examined pathology specimens belonging to
deceased soldiers of 1918, revealing similarities with that of the avian flu virus (Schneider, 2014).
Evidence has correlated a pattern of influenza strain elements, accompanied by consistent
transmutation, that has established a paralleled relationship between that of animal reservoirs and
Asia. It is believed that global transmission of the virus is carried via birds that consume food from
the same sources that of pigs, consisting of contaminated feed and waterfowl. Human and animal
influenza viruses incubate in a pig s digestive system, forming new genetic combinations
(Schneider, 2014). Asia occupies cohabitation of the two species that yield fertile breeding grounds
for a virus to manifest, while posing a significant threat and concern to the heavily populated areas
within close proximity.

Viruses that were responsible for the 1957 and 1968 epidemics, resembled that of the avian

Overview of the Smurfette Principle
In their pieces on the Smurfette principle, Pollitt and Ellis both discuss the idea that gender
representations have intense effects on the children who absorb certain types of popular
entertainment. Although we are hesitant to accept it, we are all influenced by the media in a very
powerful way. Whether it be through TV shows, billboards, movies or the news. One thing that we
commonly wonder about is if the adult femalepopulation is as influenced by the stereotyped gender
roles present on TV or are we shaped at a young age and carry that perspective with us throughout
our lives. This Smurfette principle has been around for almost two decades. It was introduced by

Boys define the group, its story and its code of values. Girls exist only in relation to boys
(Pollitt, 1991) and she was right. It is shown a great deal in the TV show between Barbie and
Ken. Due to the fact that little girls do not know any better, they accepted this as the norm. They
thought that in order to be perceived as perfect and accepted into society, they had to demonstrate

Law Enforcement Officers Face Incredible Dangers Essay
Law enforcement officers have encountered some very deadly days. The life of a law
enforcement officer is one of constantly being aware of your surroundings, dealing with the
uncertainty of not knowing the individuals you have to approach, and being able to cope with
the visual images seen after vicious crimes. The life of a law enforcement officer, who protects
and serves, is both challenging and rewarding. The first law enforcement system was established
in Boston, Massachusetts over 350 years ago. During this time in the Colonies that were not
heavily populated, the sheriff served as the main law enforcement officer. During the 1800 s, 24
hour law enforcement service and systems similar to what is used today began to emerge
(NLEMI). Law enforcement officers face incredible dangers. With over 900,000 law
enforcement officers nationwide the Federal Bureau of Investigations reported approximately
1,165,383 violent crimes in 2014. Approximately one law enforcement officer dies every 61
hours (NLEMI).The law enforcement profession is the most challenging and dangerous career,
because officers must be aware of every law and action they take at all times, manage constant
training and stress, and protecting others as well as themselves in the line of duty. Law
enforcement officers must be aware of the laws governing the state they work in and analyze every
action the decide to take. The number of statutes and laws is enormous. For example, there are
more than 20,000 federal laws

Filmmaking Personal Statement
Filmmaking is about not giving up, no matter how many times you are knocked to the ground. It
is about picking yourself up, brushing yourself down and moving onto the next hurdle with all
your effort possible. Yes, it is quite likely you will be knocked back again and again as the cycle
continues. But the most important thing about filmmaking is to not give up, to keep trying to
achieve your dream and make more of yourself, and therefore I have chosen to reapply to
university, as I know that I am capable of more and refuse to settle for the next best thing.
Currently I study Film and Media at Stirling University, but have not found the course to be
creatively challenging enough. As a practical learner, I find it much easier to learn on the job than
be recited it in lectures. However, I did enjoy my time learning about theorists and broader
background context as this is imperative to know to have a rounded film knowledge. ... Show more

I received general training in filmmaking but specialised in producing, which has been my

Cross Sectional Relationship Between Life Expectancy And...
ABSTRACT
According the Samuel. H. Preston, there is an empirical cross sectional relationship between life
expectancy and income. Named after him, the Preston Curve shows that there is in fact a positive
correlation between the two variables.
To discuss the topic above, this brings up the research question of this paper, that is: Is the
relationship between life expectancy and income different in countries that are growing
endogenously?
Using a cross sectional data with 30 observations, this paper finds the relationship between life
expectancy and income in countries that are growing endogenously. After gathering the data and
doing the regression analysis using STATA, even though it is true that there is a positive
correlation between the two variables, income has a very small impact towards life expectancy.
There are other factors that would have a bigger impact to change life expectancy.
1. INTRODUCTION
Economists would often try to find a certain relationship between different variables. The
relationship that was found is then shown to other economists, and people would start trying to
either approve it right, or the other way, approve it wrong. One theory that is known to be proved
correct is the relationship between life expectancy and income. However, there are still people who
are trying to disapprove this theory as the world economy has changed.
Known as the Preston Curve, this theory is an empirical cross sectional relationship between life
expectancy

Histrionic Personality Disorder Analysis
Those living with histrionic personality disorder are referred to as drama queens . Often such
persons are uncomfortable in situations where they are not the center of attention. People with this
disorder are often charming, flirtatious or seductive, and like to dress in an inappropriately
provocative way (Larsen, 2014). They can be theatrical, behaving or expressing emotions in a
manner that draws attention to themselves. Yet simultaneously, their emotional are shallow, lacking
in detail and easily changed. This gives them the air of being hollow and insincere. Moreover, the
drama and strong emotional display often embarrasses friends and family as they may embrace
even casual acquaintances with excessive enthusiasm, or may sob uncontrollably over some minor
sentimentality. People with Histrionic Personality Disorderoften... Show more content on

Personality disorders such as histrionic personality disorder are typically diagnosed by a
psychologist or psychiatrist. There are no laboratory, blood or genetic tests that can be utilized to
diagnose histrionic personality disorder. Many people diagnosed with histrionic personality

until the disorder starts to significantly interfere or impact the persons daily life.

Romantic Hero Longfellow
Romantic Hero Essay Henry Wadsworth Longfellow(1807 1882) defined, what is considered
today, the true Romantic hero. He associated the Romantic hero with unique characteristics. These
characteristics were not found in any other type of hero. In his poem A Psalm of Life , Longfellow
defined a Romantic herois while the protagonist in his poem Excelsior gives an example of a
Romantic hero. According to Longfellow the Romantic hero must be a nonconformist, a man of
action, must act in the present, and above all contribute to society.
In order for a hero to be a Romantic hero, he must be an individual. One cannot follow the crowd
and be a Romantic hero. Longfellow urged readers to be not like dumb, driven cattle (psalm of
life 5. 3) and to Be a hero in the strife! (5. 4). Longfellow demonstrated this using Exelsior by

Washington Irving, author of Rip van winkle, illustrates the Romantic hero a little differently then
Longfellow. Although there are some differences, the overall impression the characters give is
similar.
Washington Irving illustrated Rip, the protagonist in Rip van Winkle, as a very individualistic
person, who acted in the present and initially did not contribute to society. He did not inspire others
to act in the present, although he did end up achieving greatness and finding his place in society.
Using Rip Van Winkle, Irving demonstrated the qualities he believed a Romantic hero must possess.
The first qulity Irving associated with a Romantic hero was being an individual. Rip clearly did
not follow the social norm of men in the village. While all other men went to work, Rip, would
sit on a wet rock( Irving or assist a neighbor . He was willing to help anyone but his family. If Rip

late 1921 had much to do with the triving literary community already established there. Ezra Pound
had convinced James Joyce to move there, and Joyce was held in the highest esteem by the
young American writers: That awesome presence alone, and of course the publication of
Ulysses in 1922, made Paris the capital of the literary world for many young writers,
Hemingway and Fitzgerald among them. 2 In addition, Paris was free from the restrictions of

Computers And Its Impact On The Workplace
According to the U.S. Census Forty four million households, or 42 percent, had at least one member
who used the Internet at home in the 2000. Today, no doubt, even more family members in the
United States use computers. Most people are aware of the desktop computers which can be found
in the home and in the workplace. What are the different types of computers and what are their
purposes? Computers can be classified into three different categories of home computers, portable
computers, and business computers including workstations and super computers. First, what is a
computer? While the term computer can apply to virtually any device that has a microprocessor
in it, most people think of a computer as a device that receives input from the user through a
mouse or keyboard, processes it in some fashion and displays the result on a screen. Home
computers are being used by children, teenagers, and adults. The PC or personal computeris
designed to be used by one person. The term, Mac, is a PC, but most people link computers with
Windows software such as Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows XP. A PC is actually a
desktop that is designed to be used in one set location. Most desktops offer more power, storage,
and versatility for less than their portable brethren. Many desktop computers are used at home and
at work. Various types of software have been designed to meet individual needs of the computer
user. The use of home computers or PCs can be for various purposes such as

Nietzsche s Loss Of The Power Of God
God is dead. This is perhaps one of the most famous quotes in the history of philosophy. It has
been subject to many interpretations and in this essay, one of these interpretations is going to
be explored. God is dead means that the source of man s guidance through life, which is God,
has lost its power. This loss of power of God will impact society from its foundation to its apex.
This is because as the old structure, which is dependent on God collapses, what will fill the void
left by Santa Claus? What is man supposed to do then, other than following a moral code that has
been the norm for ages? What will fill that void? All of these are questions that arise out of the fear
of the void left by God upon the heart of man. Must man then become... Show more content on

As it seems, humans will always need something to follow that is outside of themselves. From the
Nietzschean point of view, instead of looking outward for guidance, we must look inward and
become the driving force of our lives through lived experience and this is what makes Nietzsche an
existentialist.
What I relate is the history of the next two centuries. I describe what is coming, what can no longer
come differently: the advent of nihilism. . . . For some time now our whole European culture has
been moving as toward a catastrophe. This quote is projecting the consequences of God s death
and not long after Nietzsche s time, what he predicted had come to pass. Furthermore, The Death
of God has two possible implications. In the short run, the consequences will not be pleasant, but
in the long term, they will be. The projected short term implication of this is the rise of Nihilism.
Described as ambiguous by Nietzsche, nihilism is an outlook on life that sees life as meaningless.
The problem with nihilism is that it still relies on the void left by the external source of direction
even though the idea of God that once governed it is dead. For this reason, nihilism is ambiguous
because

The Scheduling Of Project Management
Hypothesis: The scheduling in project management is the discipline for stating how to complete a
project within a certain timeframe, usually with defined stage, and with designated resources. The
project schedule reflects all of the work associated with delivering the project on time. It shows
how the work will progress over a period of time and takes into account factors such as limited
resources and estimating uncertainty. Without a full and complete schedule, the project manager
will be unable to communicate the complete effort, in terms of cost and resources, necessary to

The Success Of Boston Tea Party
Boston Tea Party
The colonies owned by Britain in North America, sought independence. Between the 1760s to
present day a lot has changed. The effects of the Boston Tea Party have thrived throughout America
ever since. The Boston Tea Party was a significant event in U.S. history, largely because of tea s
importance at that time, the acts of rebellion that occurred during the tea party, and the impacts they
had on shaping today s society.
Carp stated that around the early 1580 s, Europeans adopted tea for the first time.Coffee and
chocolate were also introduced to Europe around this time. These beverages did not make an
impact right away because the taste was very bitter. The beverages started to boom once sugar was
added. The plant, camelia sinensis, produces all pure tea. All the tea that Americans and Europeans
consumed came from Chinese soil until the nineteenth. Ever since, India, has the most well known
varieties of tea.
The East India Company was the primary exporter of tea to the colonies. Before the Boston Tea
Party, they stood for 3% of all goods sent to the colonies from England. They exported an
estimated 70,000 pounds (currency in U.K.) of tea a year. A merchant once estimated that each
American drank over two pounds of tea a year! Tea was consumed in households everywhere. Tea
became a necessity along with sugar and tobacco. Tea was on the rise, so Americans spent their
hard earned money on accessories that complimented their tea.

With the institution of Doi Moi the economy of Vietnam has experienced a very strong growth.
The past decade the Gross Domestic Product averaged 7.5%. Throughout the most recent years
the growth has not been as severe but still positive. It was gaining strength as 2000 began but has
been slowing down. There is still a positive growth but not as significant as in the mid 90s. See
following chart for the Real GDP Growth in %.
Towards the end of the 90s many factors accounted for this slow down. Economics reforms were
slowing as well. State owned enterprises and banks were becoming inefficient as well. This,
along with a decrease in demand and consumption, a decrease in foreign and local investing, as
well as a decrease in outputs all contributed to the slow down in economic growth. So, as this
slow down became evident, changes needed were made in order to increase the GDP. In the year
2000, certain things happened which did in fact raise the growth in real GDP. The world economy
was growing and manufacturing and commodity prices were improving as well.

Essay on Early Christian and Byzantine Art
Early Christian and Byzantine Art
Early Christian and Byzantine art started after JesusГ death in the first century ranging and ending
to the fourth century AD. The art produced during this period was secretive because Christianity
was not a formal religion but as a cult; the Romans and rest of Europe persecuted Christians so the
artist disguised their work with symbols and hints of Christian aspects. Christianity was the first
cult to not involve rituals of sacrifice of animals and refused to worship an Emperor causing the
Roman Empire to make Christianity illegal. Byzantine art excelled in the Justinian period in the
east during 520 540 AD. The art was produced in Ravenna, Byzantine, Venice, Sicily, Greece, and

However, the artist used Christian meaning in symbols to celebrate their religion. Such symbols
were a piece of garland meant victory over death, a tendril was the Eucharist, a nude figure is
Christmas, a peacock is immortality, and a flying bird is a soul flying to heaven.
The second period, the emergence stage, used Christian subject matter and Roman style. They used
Roman style because that is what the artist were taught and used to but were now aloud to use
Christian subject matter. Problems set forth during this period because Roman realism was not
appropriate for the Christian message. The Christian art was about soul and not body.
The Good Shepherd in the Catacombs of St. Pietro and Marcellius is a fresco found in Rome during
the fourth century. It contains shapes of crosses with Christ in the center and the good shepherd. It
uses orans that are figures without stretched hands representing a prayer towards Heaven.
The Church of San Vitale is made from either 350 to 500 AD. It is made of sliver and gold. The
subject matter is two figures of Christ from his younger years and the other is from his martyrdom.
Figures of apostles, animals, and birds woven into a network of vines, branches, leaves, and grapes.

Forensic Use of Acid Phosphatase Tests
People who watched crime based television shows understand that DNA evidence is not always
noticeable at first glance. In fact, in some cases, it can be impossible to detect visually. Take
semen, for example. In large amounts, seminal fluid is easy to detect. It leaves a noticeable crusty
stain on most fabric. However, if that fabric is washed then the stain is gone. Presumably, the
evidence is washed away. This is not the case necessarily. There are several methods forensic
scientists use to find traces of semento identify a male s identity. The Acid Phosphatase Color Test
is widely regarded as the most effective way to both locate and characterize a seminal stain.
Acid Phosphatase is an enzyme found in seminal fluid. It comes from the prostate gland (Johnson
2009). Typically, the more Prostatic Acid Phosphatase found in a sample of semen is a sign of
prostate cancer. This is important because the Acid Phosphatase Color Test was once used to
determine of a male had prostate cancer. It was later replaced by Prostate Specific Antigen, aka
PSA. Forensic scientists still use this test to identify semen, however. In 1938, Gutman and Gutman
reported increased levels of acid phosphatase in patients with metastatic prostate cancer (Taira,
Merrick, Wallner, and Dattoli, Reviving the Acid Phosphatase Test for Prostate Cancer ). It was
later replaced by the Prostate Specific Antigen in 1971 (Taira, Merrick, Wallner, and Dattoli,

With a divisional structure, head of divisions have P L responsibility for that line of business,
because of this they will often think about what best for their division and not pass on new

In all its garish storefronts and blinking neon signs, St. Mark s Place is surprisingly tame

A Comparison Of Bell Jar And Duncan In The Way
Life is like a game of Russian roulette, a lot of it involves luck. Nobody can t know what s going to
happen next, only hope that it s going to turn out well in the end. Although in the end, no matter
what anybody has been through, these things shape them, they make them who they are. There s a
point in life which arguably is the most important in turning them into the person they are, these are
the teenage years. Everything can be great until then, but life throws a curveball and now it seems
like everything has turned against them. Some people get through this, becoming a better person in
the end; others aren t so lucky. This was the case for both Esther in The Bell Jarand Duncan in The
Way Way Back in their teenage years they faced some... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As kids we re taught that we can get most anything we want with screaming, crying, and or
telling. It s a terrible lesson to teach kids, and sadly that s the way most are taught. Once the kids
become teenagers and approach adulthood they re hit with the realization that crying won t fix
everything. Duncan, like most others and sometimes myself, combat this via silence. Instead of
talking out Duncan would avoid the problems that he faced instead of dealing with them head
on. Owen had jokingly told Duncan, I m afraid I m gonna have to ask you to leave. [...] I m
getting complaints. You re having way too much fun. It s making everyone uncomfortable
(Faxon). Now Duncan of course doesn t understand that this a joke, but instead of questioning
why he s being fired he goes simply replies Okay and was about to leave. I typically feel like this
and it s a bad thing to do because if I can t resolve my problems how am I supposed to move past
them, same with Duncan. The coming of age experience teaches young adults many things
ranging from life will throw you curveballs to sometimes you won t be able to catch these
curveballs. The point isn t to sulk in the past of all the bad things that had happened to you, it s to
move past them to make you a better person. Coming of age experiences are important because
they shape you into the person you are, even if they re not particularly fun all the time. All your
experiences carry value with them, they re important to have because of lessons that they teach

Maus Spiegelman Analysis
The graphic novel, Maus by Art Spiegelman, is a story of his father Vladek, but also of him
interviewing his father about his experience of the Holocaust in the World War II. The story is
divided into two parts, one is about the author interviewing his father about the past and their family
life during the catastrophe and all the sufferings they have been through, and the other part is about
the author telling his father s story. This essay focuses on different aspects of the story that I find
most interesting.
Considering the Holocaust is the worst genocide in human history, the first fascinating aspect of the
story is about Vladek having the courage to tell his story, despite the torture and psychological
trauma and the massacre he actually

Analysis Of The Book Between The World And Me Essay

appealing in the eyes of other countries, and even ourselves, because of the free and equal
characteristics we claim ourselves to have, such as: freedom of religion, freedom to own private
property, and freedom of equal justice. However, in the eyes of an African America, Atlantic
Monthly Journalist, we see that all of these freedoms find a loophole when it comes to the black
community. In Ta Nehisi Coates book Between the World and Me, he writes from a political, yet
deeply personal standpoint to analyze today s version of racism. Coates strays away from his
usual journalist works to a more deeper and personal view. His book is devoted to his fifteen
year old son, Samori, and provides him with guidance through the struggle of racism; all while
letting Samori fend for himself. Coates lets his son know all this through history, and heritage; of
his own and of America s. Ta Nehisi Coates is a journalist, blogger, and memoirist incorporates
historical comprehension to exhibit America s most disputed issues, especially racism. His work
has been published in local and national papers, including: Village Voice, Washington City Paper,

The Polonium Project
Imagine building something in history that changed people s thoughts on war and weapons, that s
exactly what the atomic bomb did. The atomic bomb was made all over the United States with
thousands of fascinating technicians. The bomb changed many people s outlooks on the creation
of something as huge and powerful as this. The idea of creating such a powerful weapon came
about when Franklin D. Roosevelt received a letter from Albert Einstein and his Hungarian
colleague, Leo Szilard. This letter was to convince President Roosevelt that they needed to create
an atomic bomb. The axis powers had the atomic technology to make bombs and other weapons
with it. To keep this project secret and away from the axis powers, the Americans named it The...

Hundreds of thousands of civilians were vaporized and saturated with radiation. Survivors faced
radiation sickness, starvation, and crippling mutilations. The deaths of Japanese soldiers and
civilians reached around three million. There was also extreme damage after the bombs were
dropped. The islands were subjected to a naval blockade that made food and fuel increasingly
scarce. Many of the deaths were from the initial blast or burns, but (as mentioned) many people
died from radiation sickness. They suffered nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever and weakness.
People also had internal bleeding and bled from their mouths, throats and other places in their
bodies. Children growing up in the late 1940s 60s feared atomic bombs at young ages. The bomb
seemed to be like the new Bogeyman. Schools began to prepare for a bomb if there ever were one
to come again, this plan was called the duck and cover. While people believe that the atomic

who believe it was a good idea believe that the atomic bomb ended the

Milk s Story Told Right
The 2008 film Milk is based on a true story about a political leader who desired to see a change in
America, specifically the freedom of choice and speech towards homosexuals. The motion picture
takes place after Harvey Milk s 40th birthday and captures the rest of his life as he strives to
convince America to let the gay community out of the closet. The movie portrays the historical
activist very well, including the surrounding characters as well as the actual events that took place
during his time in office. The film was very accurate in representing Harvey Milk correctly. In the
movie, Milk was depicted as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Josh Brolin, the actor who played White, embodied the character in a way that the audience could
understand. During the film, the audience can see that Harvey Milk and George Moscone
developed a political relationship. Shortly after Dan White resigned his seat from the Board of
Supervisors, Milk convinced Mayor Moscone that he would have a greater chance at being
reelected mayor without White on the Board. Mayor George Moscone trusted Milk in this political
judgment call. When the climactic scene of the two assassinations comes, the film depicts it
accurately. After entering San Francisco s City Hall from another entrance to elude the metal
detectors, White went to Moscone s office to plead for his reemployment. When Moscone denied
him the occupation, White shot and killed him. Later in the same hour, White went to Milk s office
and killed him as well. The film certainly displayed this scene accurately.
Actor Sean Penn also delivered an outstanding performance playing the main character Harvey
Milk. From the beginning to the end, Penn gave a believable presentation. In the film, Milk starts
a camera business which then becomes a salon for homosexuals. While noticing that his
surroundings are less than approving of the gay community, Milk decides to be a voice for those
who are, metaphorically speaking, trapped behind closet doors. In 1977, Milk was elected to the
San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Being in a place of power, Milk used this

Charles Mingus and Civil Rights
Charles Mingus was one of the most influential and groundbreaking jazz musicians and composers
of the 1950s and 1960s. The virtuoso bassist gained fame in the 1940s and 1950s working with such
jazz greats as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Art Tatum, and many others. His
compositions pushed harmonic barriers, combining Western European classical styles with African
American roots music. While examining his career is valuable from musical standpoint, his career
also provides a powerful view of the attitudes of African American jazzmusicians (and Black
America as a whole) towards the racial inequalities in America during that time. In addition to being
a successful musician, Mingus was a very outspoken social commentator.... Show more content on

The arrest of Rosa Parks on December 1st, 1955 was one of the most critical moments in the Civil
Rights Movement. It might not be such a coincidence that Mingus releases his most socially
relevant album only 2 months later. Pithecanthropus Erectus was Mingus s first album with Atlantic
records as a band leader. The title track on this album is meant to be a commentary on race
relations in the US during that time. It is also the beginning of Mingus s shift towards Black
Nationalism. It is a metaphor for the African American struggle for equality. The structure of the
tune was very experimental for the time. The piece alternates from structured material and chaotic
improvisation. The tune is broken into 3 sections; A, B, and C. The A section features composed
melodies, played in unison, and it follows classical European harmonization. The B section breaks
from this structured idea and goes into a collective improvisation and brings out blues inspired
inflections. The C section goes into complete chaos with wild, atonal improve meant to mimic
human screams and animal calls. The A section is meant to represent a tyrant oppressor and his
attempts to suppress his enslaved subjects. The B section represents the empowerment of the
enslaved and their attempts at freedom. The chaos of the C section is meant to imply the
destruction of the oppressor by the no free slaves. The premise behind this tune goes in line with
the political consciousness of the jazz

question. To me, I think celebrity activism has a very positive effect on society and should become

history, celebrity activism helps draw attention to all different kinds of issues activism gives
celebrities an opportunity to use their wealth for the good of something greater than themselves.

William Pitt Research Paper
Literature during the Eighteenth century helped shape and embody public opinion towards certain
political figures. This statement is particularly true in the examination of William Pitt 1st Earl of
Chatham and his Whig government, and the role literature had in evoking popular opinions
towards him and his party in the political classes. Literature in particular can be considered a good
barometer for understanding attitudes towards politics due to their intimate relationship. The
Eighteenth century saw a rise in a specific genre of literature, that was particularly focused on
engaging in the political discussions and debates of the time. This political literature became an
important form of critiquing and analysing certain political ideas and... Show more content on

By 1759 William Pitt had become a hugely popular figure due to his shepherding of British
military and imperial successes. He became a symbolic figure of Britain s military dominance
and growth into an imperial power. The success in the war had boosted Pitt s popularity,
increasing his importance in the Pitt Newcastle Government and further cementing his image as
Patriot King figure. Popular support for Pitt was reflected in the political literature and their
support of his achievements. In 1757 a political journal was published called The Constitution,
with an address to a great man that was dedicated directly to Pitt as the titular Great Man . This
journal represents an overt celebration of William Pitt, cannosing him as a significant and
celebrated figure, that is emblematic of British success. The journal is suggestive of the
increasing support given to Pitt during the late 1750 s, and his increasing role as a figure of
popular admiration from the political classes. During this period of Pitt s popularity, the more
positive aspects of Pitt s image were strengthened, specifically his image of the Great
Commoner. This image emphasised Pitt s supposed honesty and integrity, as well as connection
to the political classes. This image became particularly evident in the literature of the late 1750
s, as it strongly reinforced the popular understanding of his image. This can be seen in a
Broadside Ballad from 1763, named Excise A La Mode; or Sawney s Oeconomy. This ballad is
indicative of the literature of the late 1750 s and its portrayal of Pitt. This is the case because it
draws on the positive image of Pitt, that pervaded the late 1750 s. For example, in the ballad, Pitt
is described as a good peacemaker who charm(s) our allies. This description helps to maintain the
ideal of Pitt s magnanimity, as well as amplifying his charismatic

Economic Sustainability And Economic Development
Sustainable.
Often heard used as a marketing buzzword to boost sales or win votes, it is firmly ingrained in the
contemporary public psyche. A term first largely introduced by the 1987 Brundtland Report (by The
World Commission on Environment and Development) who defined and politicized the term
sustainable development , sustainability has since taken on numerous connotations.
Ecological sustainability refers to the robustness of our ecosystems and the ability to maintain or
enhance our planet s unique biodiversity.
Economic sustainability is defined by Cato as continued economic development while not
degrading our planet s ecology (Cato, 2011), however not all definitions accord such a large role to
the ecological state of our planet. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Where environmental problems are concerned, the neoclassical approach does not account for the
market failure that occurs when all individuals are making decisions to achieve their personal
greatest happiness . While theoretically this leads to a balanced optimum market; exclusivity, non
excludability, externalities, imperfect information, inappropriate government regulations and
prisoners dilemma all prevent the macro economic market from reaching a true pareto optimum
(Goodland et. al, 1987) as predicted by the paradigm.
In environmental terms, market failure results in an array of impacts of varying significance that
are often amplified by the globalized macro economy and our planet s vast social inequity.
For example, an externality such as air pollution may not directly affect the consumer, but can have
adverse impacts on the local environment where the product was produced. This impact is often not
reflected in the market value of the product, altering marginal cost curve and undermining the
possibility of reaching an optimal market. In addition, the impacts of market failure often
disproportionately affect the poorest communities and amplify social inequity.
The neoclassical paradigm is thus fundamentally

Diffusion and Osmosis Shown In Solutions
Section 1: Abstract
This lab, title Diffusion and Osmosis, was centered around the diffusion across a cellular membrane
and how exactly materials move and diffuse in concentrations. Both diffusion and osmosis are forms
of movement that are part of passive transport dealing with cell membranes. Diffusion is where the
solutes move from an area of high concentration to a low concentration. Water goes through the cell
membranes by diffusion. Osmosis is specifically the movement of water through membranes. Since
osmosis and diffusion are both part of passive transport, this means that they do not require energy
or pumps. There are different environments ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I took the five dialysis tubings which were acting as cells and filled them with 10 mL of each
solution. We knotted each end but made sure to leave enough space at the top for water to
diffuse in the cell. The initial weight was taken and recorded in a data table. The five cells were
placed in a beaker filled with water for 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes, the cells were weighed,
and the final weight was recorded in the data table, and then the percent change was calculated. The
materials used in this procedure were beakers, water, sucrose, glucose, NaCl, ovalbumin, 20 cm
long dialysis tubing and balances.
In the inquiry, I predicted that the blue solution was water and that it would have an isotonic
environment, meaning there would be no percent change.I first cut the potatoes into
6 cylinders of the same size by using a cork. I got six beakers and filled each with 20 mL of the
different color coated solutions with different concentrations (orange, red, yellow, green, blue
purple). The initial mass of each potato cylinder was taken before placing in the solution. I placed
the potatoes in the appropriate labeled beaker (1 6) of each solution and let them sit there for 30
minutes. After the 30 minutes, I took the final mass of each cylinder and calculated the percent
change in mass. The materials that were used in the inquiry were potatoes, corks, pipettes, balances,
scalpels, beakers, and the color coded sucrose solutions.

she isn t environmentally friendly. She wouldn t let us buy re cycled toilet paper because she

She always complained that she had nothing to wear, but managed to fill six wardrobes and most

  • 2. Culturally Responsive Literature Comprehensive Exams: Culturally Responsive Literature and the Role of Technology in Improved Literacy Instruction Moira Moynihan Lipscomb University In the quest to make education a more equitable, empowering force for all scholars, irrespective of racial and demographic background, no fight garners as much urgency as that to close the literacy gap. Whereas science, social studies, or math may or may not enter the daily discourse of a wealthy family as it raises its child, reading will unquestionably monopolize a statistically significant portion of child rearing time. Betty Hart and Todd R Risley outline the devastating scale of this schism in their work The Early Catastrophe: The 30 Million Word Gap by Age 3, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Marx s 1858 Grundrisse divides value into two distinct categories: use and exchange. Use value refers to the utilitarian value garnered from something, whereas exchange value places monetary value onto certain objects within a fiat currency system assuming there is no inherent worth in something. The biggest argument against culturally responsive teaching within literacy comes from a perceived lack of exchange value. True a capitalistic, patriarchal, white supremacist society does not place substantial, if any, market value onto texts missing from the constructed Western Canon. If education seeks to truly empower students, teachers must equip students with skills and knowledge that has market exchange value. However, I argue that because culturally responsive texts are a more effective way to build reading capacity, the loss of market exchange value is dwarfed by the augmented use value that comes from being a strong, analytical reader. I will also conceded that viewing literature through a class based lens exclusively diminishes the holistic construction of literary worth, and I would argue for non economic benefits stemming from reading, some of which exist simply as expanded thought processes. However, so long as a dominant lens through which readers can be ability grouped is socio economic status, the economic ramifications of reading cannot be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Lung Consolidation Case Study Lung consolidations may have a variety of causes including infection, pulmonary embolism, lung cancer and metastasis, compression atelectasis, obstructive atelectasis, and lung contusion Additional sonographic signs that may help to determine the cause of lung consolidation include the following: a)The quality of the deep margins of the consolidation. b) The presence of comet tail reverberation artifacts at the far field margin. c) The presence of air bronchogram(s). d) The presence of fluid bronchogram(s). e)The vascular pattern within the consolidation . The presence of dynamic air bronchogram (branching echogenic structures with centrifuge movement with breathing) helps to rule out obstructive atelectasia Focal interstitial pattern: Focal interstitial pattern was defined as vertical hyperechoic comet tail artefacts that arose strictly from the pleural line, spread to the edge of the screen without fading and appeared focally instead of diffusely( Nafae et al.,2013). • 4. Distance Education Means Online Education To most people in the 21st century, distance education means online education, the use of the Internet to create a computer based learning connection between instructor and student (Larreamendy Joerns Leinhardt, 2006). In today s increasingly technological world, nearly 70% of top academic leaders agree that online learning is part of the academic world s future, and as of 2013, nearly 1/3 of higher educationstudents were enrolled in an online course (Kentnor, 2015). Although distance educations rapid evolution began alongside the growth of technology in the late 1990s, the history of distance learning goes back much farther than modern technology. First distance learning The first educational occurrence that can be viewed as distance learning occurred in the 18th century. Caleb Phillips took out an advertisement in the Boston Gazette that offered shorthand lessons. Phillips s idea was to send lessons via the Postal Service, which some view not as actual distance education because a lack of two way communication. Regardless, the basic principle of distance learning was present (Kentnor, 2015). As cited in Kentnor (2015), according to Verduin and Clark (1991), the first real distance educator was Issac Pitman, who taught shorthand by correspondence via mailed postcards in 1840. Students mailed their work back to Pitman, thus establishing the first true distance education. This method continued from the 19th to the early 20th century, as desire for a college ... For example, The Chimney Sweeper is a key poem in both collections that portrays the soul of a child The Chimney Sweeper in Innocence vs. The Chimney Sweeper in Experience In William Blake s Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience, many of the poems correlate in numerous aspects. For example, The Chimney Sweeper is a key poem in both collections that portrays the soul of a child with both a naГЇve and experienced persona. Blake uses the aspects of religion, light versus dark imagery, and the usage of the chimney sweeper itself to convey the similarities and differences of the figure in both poems. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After Tom awakes from this dream, he was happy and warm with the knowledge that with God, there was no need to fear death. However, in Songs of Experience, the outlook on life and death is not so joyful. The religious imagery is not so much as in Songs of Innocence, possibly because people tend to believe more religiously when innocence dominates terrible experiences. In the latter poem, however, the little black thing has been clothed in the clothes of death by his parents forcing him to become a chimney sweeper. His parents have gone to praise God and his Priest and King, who make up a heaven of our misery and the boy cannot understand this as he sings the notes of woe and not happiness. This chimney sweeper does not have the innocence and hopefulness of the chimney sweeper in Songs of Innocence. This child possesses experience of hardship and does not hold much faith in God and religion. This version of The Chimney Sweeper lacks the hopefulness and faith found in the former version although it is the same setting, factors, and occupation. William Blake conveys both innocence and experience with the literary technique of light versus dark imagery. In Songs of Innocence, Blake discusses the issue of soot on several instances. In the beginning verse, the young chimney sweeper slept in soot, showing the incorruptibility and despair of the young child. Also, Tom Dacre s white hair was shaved so that the dark soot ... • 7. Lab Report On The Mass Of Actual Aspirin ( Acetylsalicylic... Abstract: This experiment utilizes skills of titration in order to find the percent mass of actual aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) in store bought aspirin. Two steps and two kinds of titrations are used. First, approximately 0.1 M NaOH solution was standardized using titration with KHP. KHP was used because it does not absorb moisture when it is stored, and it is soluble in water. The reaction that takes place in this reaction is a 1:1 mole ratio reaction. The titrationdetermines the volume of NaOH solution needed to completely react with the known amount of KHP. This makes the calculation of molarity of NaOH solution fairly easy. The average molarity calculated was 0.09897 M. The final part of the experiment is a titration to indicate the amount of acetylsalicylic acid present in approximately 0.5 g of store bought aspirin. The volume of 0.09897 M NaOH solution indicated the moles of NaOH that reacted with the aspirin. The reaction between NaOH and acetylsalicylic acid is a 1:1 mole ratio reaction. The calculated mass of acetylsalicylic acid was 0.3963g. This was divided by the initial amount of aspirin measured (0.4976g), and multiplied by 100 to give the percent mass. This value is 79.66%. This particular experiment may not be very accurate. Specifically, only two standardization trials were counted. This may cause a less accurate measurement of NaOH solution molarity, ultimately leading to an inaccurate percent mass of acetylsalicylic acid. Introduction ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Bmw s Impact On The Manufacturing Of Cars BMW begins its long history, which stretches for almost a hundred years, in Germany. BMW had a major impact on the manufacturing of cars. Rapp needed a financial backer to do this and in 1916 he renamed the Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works). After a financial problem with the company Rapp left. When Rapp left the company Franz Josef Popp took over. He set up BMWas we know it today( BMW Early History Вќ). In 1913 a German engineer Karl Friedrich Rapp who had been the early director of a successful aircraft company, started his own business to make aircraft engines. He named the Rapp Motorenwerke and set up shop in Munich Germany. He did this because the biggest buyer of his engines was nearby. The company did very well and was contracted to build a large sum of V12 airplane engines to fill a very high demand. BMW made many aircraft engines during WWI. After the war was lost the Versailles Treaty prohibited German companies from producing aircraft and aircraft engines. BMW had to find a new way to stay in business and get income. Again and again BMW had discussed getting into the car business but it was never really necessary until now( History of BMW Вќ). At this time in history German s economy was very bad and inflation was very high. BMW started to make low cost cars in early 1925. They were a success and BMW made a full swing into the automobile business. In 1930 BMW began work on a new four cylinder engine. The engine was advanced for its time but it ... • 9. The Digital Assistant, Or Pda The personal digital assistant, or PDA, was a small hand held electronic device that was intended for use as a simple organizer, including features like a calendar and tasks list. Today, the PDA has fallen into disuse, replaced by its more popular and powerful successor: the smart phone. Voice recognition technology is giving rebirth to the spirit of the PDA in the form of new intelligent digital systems designed to help you manage your affairs. These reborn personal assistants are gaining popularity in both consumer and business markets due to their ability to streamline commonplace tasks. As new technologies are discovered, additional applications and markets will be uncovered for this technology to take root in. A Brief History The idea of digital personal assistants has been around in the public realm quite a while thanks mainly to Hollywood since the 1960 s. Many movies back in the sixties would depict computers or other devices that had the ability to plan and organize events with limited human interaction. Due to the production of several science fiction titles such as Star Trek, Star Wars, and A Space Odyssey, the early conceptions of such beings as cognitive personal assistants came to the public eye. Early examples of such devices included Star Trek s talking computer, the Hal 9000, and R2D2; devices that could in most cases assist or come up with plans instead of requiring humans to do the organization, reasoning, or brainstorming of all factors in the decision ... • 14. Film Analysis Of The Film The Scarlett Letter The Scarlett Letter 1995 Film Analysis The Scarlett Letter, is about a young mistress named Hester Prynne. In 1666, after moving to the Massachusetts Bay Colony from England to await her husbands arrival, Hester beings to fall in love with the town s pastor, Arthur Dimmesdale. Roger Prynne, Hester s husband, and all other passengers of an English ship are presumed dead in the aftermath of an attack. After she and Arthur consummate their love, Hester finds herself pregnant. Hester soon becomes the subject of idle gossip among the colonists after she shares her radical thoughts and views on the Bible and the Puritan way of life. Two of the other mistresses in the colony also witnessed Hester become ill on two separate occasions during the morning hours, so she is called to appear before the Elders of the colony to be accused of Heresy, Fornication, and Adultery. Hester is then arrested and imprisoned for her indiscretion. On the day of giving birth to her bastard child, Pearl, Hester is humiliated in front of the entire town and made to wear a red A for adulterer on her chest and to also followed around by a drummer boy that bangs his drum wherever she goes in public. Roger Prynne resurfaces and was never actually killed by the Indians, but was captured and held prisoner. After learning about the scandal of his wife, Roger joins the colony under an alias, Dr. Roger Chillingworth . Roger eventually scalps and kills a male colonist that he thought was Arthur, and blames the murder on the Algonquian Indians, which prompts the declaration of war on the Indians by the colonists. Roger commits suicide for his wrong doings, Hester and Arthur abandon the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and the scarlet letter to set out for Carolina to start a new life. I do believe that The Scarlett Letter is historically accurate. I think the writers and directors accurately communicated the sense of historic time and place, it really felt like I left the 21st century and stepped back in time. There are several pieces of evidence within the film that are historically accurate. In one of the first scenes of the film, the narrator describes Hester Prynne as she comes from England to the New World, My name is Pearl. This is the story ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Influenza As An Influenza Virus INTRODUCTION:Influenza, more commonly known as the flu , is a chameleon like infectious disease, that presents itself with varying characteristics from year to year, due to the wavering identity of the strain. Like HIV, influenza is an RNA virus, constantly changing its appearance and adept at eluding recognition by the human immune system (Schneider, 2014). From its inception of 1918, influenzaclaims an average of 250,000 to 500,000 people worldwide, annually. Little is known of the virus s origin however; recent studies examined pathology specimens belonging to deceased soldiers of 1918, revealing similarities with that of the avian flu virus (Schneider, 2014). Evidence has correlated a pattern of influenza strain elements, accompanied by consistent transmutation, that has established a paralleled relationship between that of animal reservoirs and Asia. It is believed that global transmission of the virus is carried via birds that consume food from the same sources that of pigs, consisting of contaminated feed and waterfowl. Human and animal influenza viruses incubate in a pig s digestive system, forming new genetic combinations (Schneider, 2014). Asia occupies cohabitation of the two species that yield fertile breeding grounds for a virus to manifest, while posing a significant threat and concern to the heavily populated areas within close proximity. The life of a law enforcement officer, who protects and serves, is both challenging and rewarding. The first law enforcement system was established in Boston, Massachusetts over 350 years ago. During this time in the Colonies that were not heavily populated, the sheriff served as the main law enforcement officer. Named after him, the Preston Curve shows that there is in fact a positive correlation between the two variables. To discuss the topic above, this brings up the research question of this paper, that is: Is the relationship between life expectancy and income different in countries that are growing endogenously? Using a cross sectional data with 30 observations, this paper finds the relationship between life expectancy and income in countries that are growing endogenously. After gathering the data and doing the regression analysis using STATA, even though it is true that there is a positive correlation between the two variables, income has a very small impact towards life expectancy. There are other factors that would have a bigger impact to change life expectancy. 1. INTRODUCTION Economists would often try to find a certain relationship between different variables. The relationship that was found is then shown to other economists, and people would start trying to either approve it right, or the other way, approve it wrong. The effects of the Boston Tea Party have thrived throughout America ever since. The Boston Tea Party was a significant event in U.S. history, largely because of tea s importance at that time, the acts of rebellion that occurred during the tea party, and the impacts they had on shaping today s society. Carp stated that around the early 1580 s, Europeans adopted tea for the first time.Coffee and chocolate were also introduced to Europe around this time. These beverages did not make an impact right away because the taste was very bitter. The beverages started to boom once sugar was added. The plant, camelia sinensis, produces all pure tea. All the tea that Americans and Europeans consumed came from Chinese soil until the nineteenth. Ever since, India, has the most well known varieties of tea. The East India Company was the primary exporter of tea to the colonies. Before the Boston Tea Party, they stood for 3% of all goods sent to the colonies from England. They exported an estimated 70,000 pounds (currency in U.K.) of tea a year. A merchant once estimated that each American drank over two pounds of tea a year! Tea was consumed in households everywhere. Economics reforms were slowing as well. State owned enterprises and banks were becoming inefficient as well. This, along with a decrease in demand and consumption, a decrease in foreign and local investing, as well as a decrease in outputs all contributed to the slow down in economic growth. So, as this slow down became evident, changes needed were made in order to increase the GDP. In the year 2000, certain things happened which did in fact raise the growth in real GDP. Essay on Early Christian and Byzantine Art Early Christian and Byzantine Art Early Christian and Byzantine art started after JesusГ death in the first century ranging and ending to the fourth century AD. The art produced during this period was secretive because Christianity was not a formal religion but as a cult; the Romans and rest of Europe persecuted Christians so the artist disguised their work with symbols and hints of Christian aspects. Christianity was the first cult to not involve rituals of sacrifice of animals and refused to worship an Emperor causing the Roman Empire to make Christianity illegal. Byzantine art excelled in the Justinian period in the east during 520 540 AD. The art was produced in Ravenna, Byzantine, Venice, Sicily, Greece, and Russia. The ... The second period, the emergence stage, used Christian subject matter and Roman style. They used Roman style because that is what the artist were taught and used to but were now aloud to use Christian subject matter. Problems set forth during this period because Roman realism was not appropriate for the Christian message. The Christian art was about soul and not body. In fact, in some cases, it can be impossible to detect visually. Take semen, for example. In large amounts, seminal fluid is easy to detect. It leaves a noticeable crusty stain on most fabric. However, if that fabric is washed then the stain is gone. Presumably, the evidence is washed away. This is not the case necessarily. There are several methods forensic scientists use to find traces of semento identify a male s identity. The Acid Phosphatase Color Test is widely regarded as the most effective way to both locate and characterize a seminal stain. Acid Phosphatase is an enzyme found in seminal fluid. It comes from the prostate gland (Johnson 2009). Typically, the more Prostatic Acid Phosphatase found in a sample of semen is a sign of prostate cancer. This is important because the Acid Phosphatase Color Test was once used to determine of a male had prostate cancer. It was later replaced by Prostate Specific Antigen, aka PSA. This image emphasised Pitt s supposed honesty and integrity, as well as connection to the political classes. This image became particularly evident in the literature of the late 1750 s, as it strongly reinforced the popular understanding of his image. This can be seen in a Broadside Ballad from 1763, named Excise A La Mode; or Sawney s Oeconomy. This ballad is indicative of the literature of the late 1750 s and its portrayal of Pitt. This is the case because it draws on the positive image of Pitt, that pervaded the late 1750 s. For example, in the ballad, Pitt is described as a good peacemaker who charm(s) our allies. This description helps to maintain the ideal of Pitt s magnanimity, as well as amplifying his charismatic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Economic Sustainability And Economic Development Sustainable. Often heard used as a marketing buzzword to boost sales or win votes, it is firmly ingrained in the contemporary public psyche. A term first largely introduced by the 1987 Brundtland Report (by The World Commission on Environment and Development) who defined and politicized the term sustainable development , sustainability has since taken on numerous connotations. Ecological sustainability refers to the robustness of our ecosystems and the ability to maintain or enhance our planet s unique biodiversity. Economic sustainability is defined by Cato as continued economic development while not degrading our planet s ecology (Cato, 2011), however not all definitions accord such a large role to the ecological state of our planet. ... Where environmental problems are concerned, the neoclassical approach does not account for the market failure that occurs when all individuals are making decisions to achieve their personal greatest happiness . While theoretically this leads to a balanced optimum market; exclusivity, non excludability, externalities, imperfect information, inappropriate government regulations and prisoners dilemma all prevent the macro economic market from reaching a true pareto optimum (Goodland et. al, 1987) as predicted by the paradigm. In environmental terms, market failure results in an array of impacts of varying significance that are often amplified by the globalized macro economy and our planet s vast social inequity. For example, an externality such as air pollution may not directly affect the consumer, but can have adverse impacts on the local environment where the product was produced. This impact is often not reflected in the market value of the product, altering marginal cost curve and undermining the possibility of reaching an optimal market. In addition, the impacts of market failure often disproportionately affect the poorest communities and amplify social inequity. The neoclassical paradigm is thus fundamentally ... • 52. Diffusion Osmosis Lab Report Ellice Johnson Period 1 October 12, 2012 Diffusion and Osmosis Shown In Solutions Section 1: Abstract This lab, title Diffusion and Osmosis, was centered around the diffusion across a cellular membrane and how exactly materials move and diffuse in concentrations. Both diffusion and osmosis are forms of movement that are part of passive transport dealing with cell membranes. Diffusion is where the solutes move from an area of high concentration to a low concentration. Water goes through the cell membranes by diffusion. Osmosis is specifically the movement of water through membranes. Since osmosis and diffusion are both part of passive transport, this means that they do not require energy or pumps. There are different environments ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I took the five dialysis tubings which were acting as cells and filled them with 10 mL of each solution. We knotted each end but made sure to leave enough space at the top for water to diffuse in the cell. The initial weight was taken and recorded in a data table. The five cells were placed in a beaker filled with water for 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes, the cells were weighed, and the final weight was recorded in the data table, and then the percent change was calculated. The materials used in this procedure were beakers, water, sucrose, glucose, NaCl, ovalbumin, 20 cm long dialysis tubing and balances. In the inquiry, I predicted that the blue solution was water and that it would have an isotonic environment, meaning there would be no percent change.I first cut the potatoes into 6 cylinders of the same size by using a cork. I got six beakers and filled each with 20 mL of the different color coated solutions with different concentrations (orange, red, yellow, green, blue purple). The initial mass of each potato cylinder was taken before placing in the solution. I placed the potatoes in the appropriate labeled beaker (1 6) of each solution and let them sit there for 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes, I took the final mass of each cylinder and calculated the percent change in mass. The materials that were used in the inquiry were potatoes, corks, pipettes, balances, scalpels, beakers, and the color coded sucrose solutions. ... To my wife. Any excuse for a drink. It is I believe traditional to give an insight into the people whose marriage you have all just witnessed. My daughter has made a beautiful bride, but what sort of person is she?Well for a start she isn t environmentally friendly. She wouldn t let us buy re cycled toilet paper because she thought it was. She has of course always brightened up our lives. You never did learn to turn lights off did you. She always complained that she had nothing to wear, but managed to fill six wardrobes and most of the floor with it. Funny that now she has her own house she is really house proud. Anyway she always dressed to kill, and cooked the same way. Only joking, we have had some lovely meals at your house. She is a lovely girl and deserves a good husband. You re very lucky that she s married you, before she found one. Seriously though, the groom is a great guy and a real man. You come round to my house, turn on the sports channel and settle down, you even raid the fridge for my chocolate. You are also partially deaf which is a great male attribute.
