3.1 Material Selection for Disc A turbine disc rotates at high angular velocity and
operates at higher temperature. High angular velocity induces higher centrifugal
stress and high temperature gradient induces higher thermal stress. This operating
condition demands that material used for the turbine disc should have high
strength even at elevated temperature. Specifically, the tensile yield strength should
be high enough to withstand centrifugal stress developed by disc and axial loading
by blades and the fatigue strength should be high enough to withstand high stress
and low cycle fatigue. In addition to LCF concern, materials for modern turbine
disc were driven by commercial constraints like lower component cost, life cycle
