In the satirical work of Gulliver s Travels by Jonathan Swift, the author draws attention to many
elements of society that can be reflected in the modern day. With further investigation into the
literature, it is plain to see that Swift, an Irishman, was extremely bitter about the state of the
government and the control it maintained over other regions. From incompetent rulers to a focus
on reason and rationality, we can see that the themes discussed by Swift in the novel have repeated
themselves throughout the historical ages. Throughout the entire story, it is noticeable to the reader
that there is not much in the way of plot surrounding Gulliver, the main character. Swift does not
give textual insight as to Gulliver s inner workings or thoughts. This arguably happens mainly in the
genre of satirebecause the author wants the reader to focus most of their attention on the social or
political that are being referenced to within the writing. The same holds true for this story, as Swift
heavily hints at the incompetency of King George I. One of the main points that Swift draws

The Waco siege ended 22 years ago in a colossal fire that ended up killed 76 people including two
pregnant women and over 20 children. The siege began on February 28, 1993, when the US
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) attempted to execute a search warrant at
Mount Carmel Center ranch, a property held by religious group Branch Davidians in Waco,
Texas (leppard, 2013). The government suspected a radical religious leader David Koresh of
stock piling firearms and manufacturing drugs. The raid rose into an intense gun fight that last
lasted two hours with the result four agents and six Davidians killed in action. The FBI then
launched a long term assault while attempting to negotiate with Koresh and force him to
surrender the ranch. The siege ended on April 19, 50 days after the primary raid, when the FBI
sprung a final assault against Koresh. Three fires broke out in the building, killing 76 men,
women, and children, including sect leader Koresh. A total of 82 people died as a result of the
Waco siege(Leppard, 2013).
In the spring of 1993, the Branch Davidian Christian gained global infamy from this siege on its
compound that laid a few miles just outside of Waco. On Sunday, February 28, a violent two hour

Great Expectations , The Sign of the Four , and The Red Badge of Courage are books written with
literary elements as building block for storytelling. Each first chapter uses character development,
setting description, and many types of conflict to interest the reader. Even though all of the stories
contain these elements, some are used more than others. Great Expectations and The Red Badge of
Courage focus on the setting and characterdescription more than The Sign of The Four where the
element on conflict is heavily used. In the first chapter of Great Expectations the reader is
introduced to Pip who is looking at the tombstones of his birth family that he never knew in the
graveyard of a church on top of a hill. His mother, father, and five infant babies were all buried

story while also introducing some of the characters. The story uses direct characterization when
a man appears to threaten Pip. The man is described as beaten up with torn shoes and wet

conflict that occurs is classified as man versus man. Dickens uses conflict to describe what Pip
looks like when the man steals a piece of bread from Pip because he is hungry and then threatens
to cut Pips cheek off and eat it. He then describes himself in first person that he does not have
much fat on his body (Dickens,2016). Two more characters are introduced when the man asks
Pip who he lives with since his parents are dead. Pip responds and says that he lives with his
sister and the man she is married to who happens to be a blacksmith (Dickens,2016). When the
man put the knife to Pips throat and told him to fetch him a file, it motivated Pip because his life
