items. While my speaking ability had reached a point that native Chinese people
clearly understood my pronunciation and tones, my mastery of those items that had
not been clearly taught to me sometimes caused major communication breakdowns.
Frustrated, I decided to isolate these parts of speech that were giving me so much
trouble, look them up in reference grammars, and figure out once and for all how to
use them like a native Chinese person. It was this search that raised the questions that

with the line Southern trees bear a strange fruit , saying that black bodies are like
strange fruit that only grow on southern trees, which was true. The next line

or someone died in that tree. These two first lines share, both rhymes in the middle
and at the end with trees and fruit and leaves and root , which create the flow

Most people have some sort of experience or memory that has had a profound

On the American Dream test created by the Ford Foundation, I received a 53 out
of 100. I expected a score around here so I was not too shocked but it does still help
me remain grateful for everything that I have been given. This score does seem
extremely accurate because I have been extremely fortunate to have grown up in an
upper class home in one of the safest and affluent neighborhoods in the city of
Chicago. However, I expected my score to be higher than the minimum because I
