Diamond Empire Naomi Klein: New Branded World
1. What idea was the gospel of the machine age?
Bolstering ones brand name was important
2. What consensus emerged about corporations in the 1980's?
Corporations were bloated, oversized, owned too much, employed too many people, and were
weighed down with too many things
3. What race were new companies such as Nike and Microsoft competing in?
A race to own the least and employ the fewest people rivaling the traditional all American
manufacturers' for market share. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Suddenly it seemed smarter to put resources into price reductions and other incentives than into
fabulously expensive ad campaigns.
16. According to the agencies what would competing on the basis of real value lead to?
Stooping to compete on the basis of real value, the agencies ominously warned, would spell not just
the death of the brand, but corporate death as well.
17. How did companies such as Coke, Pepsi, McDonald's, Burger King and
Disney respond to the brand crisis?
And when the brands crashed, these companies didn't even notice – they were branded to the bone.
They always understood that they were selling brands before product. They had their eyes fixed on
global expansion.
18. How did The Body Shop and Starbucks foster powerful brand identities?
What the success of both the Body Shop and Starbucks showed was how far the branding project
had come in moving beyond splashing one's logo on a billboard. Here were two companies that had
fostered powerful identities by making their brand concept into a virus and sending it out into the
culture via a variety of channels: cultural sponsorship, political controversy, the consumer
experience and brand extensions.
19. According to Scott Bedbury what must brands establish?
Emotional ties because there's no difference between products

Gender "Ideals" and the Workplace
Introduction
For several decades now, women have struggled with equality in the workplace. "Men are told to
think like a woman and women are told to act like a man" (Valian, 1998). However, this advice
often reinforces gender schemas and stereotypical qualities such as sympathy for women and
assertiveness for men. While these pigeon–holes are often exaggerated, research shows that gender
characteristics do indeed exist, and they play a very powerful role in the workplace.
Background and History Gender schema theory was introduced in 1981 and states that children
actively construct mental representations about that which defines males and ... Show more content

Lastly, men are more likely to make friends with their superiors which give them better
opportunities for moving up on the corporate ladder. In 2010, 72% of men received a promotion,
compared to only 65% of women because men wore more likely to "mingle" within the office place.
(Gannon, 2012) On the other hand, it is said that women are seen as being more supportive and less
managerial. Women tend to display high levels of compassion and team–building skills.
Additionally, women leaders are able to view situations from many different perspectives,
enhancing their persuasive ability and making them better at persuasion than males. Women are also
said to like a challenge. "An international study found that 70% of businesswomen asked their
bosses for new challenges at work, which is less than half of the businessmen that did so." Lastly, it
is said that women are honest and hard workers. It was found that 54% of women worked 9–11 hour
days compared to 41% of men. It was also found that women are more likely to do work during
their vacations and less likely to spend their "sick days" playing hooky. (Gannon, 2012)

contribution to the business strategic plans. Quality performance Comm tech is well known for their
quality products which are also sold at good affordable prices. But the quality of the their newly
released product the OS 2012 has decreased, this is due to 2 reasons 1– The high demand of the new

dropped the quality of the materials that have been used to make the OS 2012. The change of the
supplier has affected largely in the manufacturing part of the company, John

Case Study Analysis for ABC, Inc. COMM/215 UOP January 9, 2012 Korijna Valenti Introduction
During my reach into the hiring issues at ABC Inc., it was found necessary to research and read
more in today's hiring process with the current job market. The following is an introduction of one
specific company that recently requested a case study of a current internal hiring process that took
place or did not take place. In this situation, a new campus recruiter was expecting to bring on 15
new hires to complete for orientation to work in the Operations department. When the operations
supervisor contacted the new recruiter and checked on the status of the recruiting process, they were
assured that all requirements would be in place. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ensuring that a proper checklist for each position is created so that for every job description that
clearly states what paperwork needs to be completed. In other words, an employee that will be
operating machinery may need to have a physical exam and an employee that is doing office filing
does not. Having a control custody form filled out by all incoming associates would have assured
that drug screens were ordered and performed, and the results were received by HR prior to moving
the hiring process forward. It is imperative to make sure that all manuals are up to date and current
with the requirements of the company. Not having current manuals not only set Carl up for missed
opportunities, but would also put any new coming recruiter that is expected to complete the process
in the same situation. Once the manuals and training materials were in place, the training room
would also need to be reserved at that time. By the time that Carl became concerned and checked
the scheduling log for the training room to make sure that the facility had been secured, he only then
discovered that the training room had been doubled booked and was in fact booked for the entire
month. By possibly placing this task earlier in the process, it would have been easier to obtain an
alternate location. Proposed Solutions When a new requisition for a position is opened, a file is

Case Study 2.3
1. What moral issues does the Pinto case raise?
The moral issues about the Ford Pinto is that they take their profit is more important than human
life. They also did not inform the consumer about the facts of the Pinto. Lastly, they also lobbied the
safety of the car to lowest standard (Shaw, Barry & Sansbury 2009, pp 97–99). (44 words)
2. Suppose Ford officials were asked to justify their decision. What moral principles do you think
they would invoke? Assess Ford's handling of the Pinto from the perspective of each of the moral
theories discussed in this chapter.
Egoism. Egoism is the closest moral principle for the Ford Pinto. Because Egoism can be explain as
self–interest and have a long–term interest, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The only morally relevant matter is whether Ford gave equal consideration to the interests of each
affected party. Do you think Ford did this?
Utilitarians means measuring overall happiness (Shaw, Barry & Sansbury 2009, pp 64–70). In
this topic, Ford only care about his own profit and never care about other's life. Ford even calculated
how much it cost for a human life. The damage for society and human life is not acceptable in
Utilitarianism. (44 words)
4. Is cost–benefit analysis a legitimate tool? What role, if any, should it play in moral deliberation?
Critically assess the example of cost–benefit analysis given in the case study. Is there anything
unsatisfactory about it? Could it have been improved upon in some way? Yes, cost–benefit is a
legitimate tool. "Cost–Benefit Analysis (CBA) estimates and totals up the equivalent money value
of the benefits and costs to the community of projects to establish whether they are worthwhile" (An
Introduction to Cost Benefit Analysis). But cost benefit analysis is just for calculating the benefit of
the company, in a mathematical way. It shouldn't play in moral deliberation, there is no way to
calculate human life or we can say as the potential that human have. We also can see that there is
unsatisfactory about the cost–benefit analysis simply by measuring only the benefits of Ford it's
own. In this case, cost–benefit analysis should improve by adding other stakeholder benefit to
produce a "win–win"

Facts:
As shareholders of VAFLA Corporation, an S corporation, the appellants claimed deductions to
reflect the corporation's operating losses. The commissioner disallowed deductions above the
$10,000 bases from original investment. The appellants contend that the adjusted basis in their stock
should be increased to reflect a $300,000 loan. The loan was obtained by VAFLA from bank and
was guaranteed by the shareholder–guarantors. VAFLA made all of the loan payments, principals
and interest to the bank and the appellants did not. Neither VAFLA nor the shareholder–guarantors
treated the loan as constructive income taxable to the shareholder–guarantors.

However, they fail to distinguish between the initial question of economic outlay and the secondary
issue of debt or equity. Only if the first question had an affirmative answer would the second arise.
The tax court correctly determined that the appellant's guarantees in itself have not constituted
contributions of cash or other property which might increase the bases of the appellant's stock.
The appellants view the "substance" of the transaction is over the "form". Generally, taxpayers are
bound by the form of their transaction and may not argue the substance triggers different tax
consequences. The Tax Court found the form and substance of the transaction was a loan from the
bank to VAFLA and not to the appellants. The proceeds were to be used in the operation of the
business and petitioners were not free to dispose the loan. Nor were the payments reported as
constructive dividends.
If VAFLA had been profitable, the petitioners would argue that the loan was from the bank to the
corporation. The loan repayments would not be on the appellants' behalf and would not be taxed as
constructive income to them. The appellants would jump an effort to play both ends against the
middle until it should be determined whether VAFLA was profitable or money–losing.
The appellants complain that the tax court fail to apply debt–equity principles. The secondary
inquiry cannot be reached unless the first question concerning whether an economic

1. What moral issues does the Pinto case raise?
The Ford Pinto case in (Shaw, Barry & Sansbury 2009, p97) stated that Ford decided to
continue produce the Pinto without making an improvement regardless of consumers' safety because
its prototype tests did not meet the safety requirement of the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration. They should not put the value of money prioritise than human life. Firstly, they
decided to sell it instead of making an improvement. Next, they were dishonest because they did not

FACTS:
Since June 1973, Sandra J. Pevsner has been a manager for the Sakowitz Yves St. Laurent Rive
Gauche Boutique located in Dallas, Texas. The Boutique sells highly fashionable and expensive
clothing and accessories designed by Yves St. Laurent (YSL). Mrs. Pevsner is expected by her
employer to wear YSL clothes and apparels at work as well as project an exclusive lifestyle and be
aware of YSL current fashion trends. Furthermore, she wears YSL apparel while commuting to and
from work, to fashion shows, and business luncheons; where she represents the boutique. In 1975,
Mrs. Pevsner purchased clothing and accessories at an employee discount for a total of $1381.91

on the school's food pantry. Although I remained quiet about the topic, there was no passive
aggression. I just did not want the group to think of me as being negatively opinionated. I have
always been an action–oriented listener, so I focused on the getting the job finished rather than
asking them to change the topic. During the writing process of the paper, I was the opinion deviate
of the group. Most of the time, I kept my opinion to myself, because I knew they would take my
criticism to the heart. To elaborate, Channing wrote an introduction that I felt was very weak. So, I
wrote a better one. Jarkayla, Channing, and Briana sided with Channing saying that her introduction
was better. Yet, Jarkayla still put two of Channing's sentences into mine and called it a "combined

The list of tasks to be completed is: COM–3011 Verification; Sample Rate Decimation; VITA–49

The COM–3011 operates by first mixing the received signal with 125 MHz, thus the data is now
contained on it. The centre frequency is chosen by mixing a user specified radio synthesiser
frequency with the 125 MHz together. For example to obtain a centre frequency of 100 MHz, the

confused on who is the troublesome member between Marmalade and Latasha. Marmalade has less
experience and not as qualified as the other members. He does not even make his own choice or

is inconsistent with Roberto and Thurman group members because she does not agree on them being

Given the timeline, all the tasks could have been handled by a single person and more man power

Alternatives Having reviewed these key areas and confirming them as coalescing from one core
problem, the lack of proper planning, it is possible to come up with solutions to each problem as it
stands currently. A quick solution to all these problems is to call Monica and inform her that the
trainees won't be ready by July 15th, and attempt to push the deadline back in order to complete all
the required tasks without rushing. I find this one inadvisable, however, because it causes a setback
for Monica herself, and it proceeds to cause further setbacks down the line, causing a ripple effect of
delayed projects. These are called concurrent delays, or delays that cause further delays (Singh &
Associates, 2014). In order to find a solution that doesn't cause concurrent delays, Carl should make
and maintain a priority list, in which he lists all the above problems and completes them in an order
of greatest importance to least importance. Below are individual solutions to each problem, which
can be used to complete tasks on the priority list. New Location for Orientation: One of the easier

it is not enough for a business to be solely responsible for increasing its profits. Lewis says that
'forty years ago social responsibility may have been seen as an act of, as Friedman described it,

Yet, there are the corporations controlling the operation of the society and they are all–in–time focus
only on their interests. This is because the government found complicated to decide on agriculture
and economics matters as they are complex soft systems where there is a lack of idea whether both
of them are on track of work or under maintenance. In the article, Jenkins (2008, p. 10) described
formal or informal organizations as the most extensive collectivity comprising tacit behavioral
customs and norms as well as unambiguous regulations and policies in shared goals, in sets of
control and authority, in criteria of employment and in operational standards. According to Ashforth

dealing with relation of individual to the organization. A complicated and continuously increasing
mixture of planning, improvisation and habit, affected by emotional responses, health and well–

identification. Group, a real but illusory identification, does not have the same ontological status as
individuals because human individuals are known as actual entities. People who think themselves

Comm 215: Case Study
Comm/215 Case Study Introduction The common perception of a recruiter is evolving quickly in
the workplace (Boswell 2001). Where once recruiters were viewed as a tool to simply acquire
candidates, modern recruiters have greater responsibilities to their clients. These responsibilities can
include tasks such as organizing paperwork, completing pre–screening measures, and even
occasionally preparing training curriculum (Darrell 2002). Recruiters are further expected to provide
quality screening of candidates and ensure the optimal match for each applicable position within a
company (Posner 2006). As with any other job within a company, recruiters must take this work
seriously and avoid procrastination to ensure a smooth transition for their candidates into the new
workplace. Should the transition fail to be smooth, the full blame modernly falls on the recruiter
who failed to use proper coordinating strategy. On that same note, the corporate world is rapidly
changing and many job expectations are becoming unstated or implied. Often times training
materials for positions cover standard policies without actually detailing the roles within a certain
position. This lack of actual knowledge can cause gaps that require new employees to take initiative
and speak up when they are unsure of their role within a position. The following case study details
the implications of failing to take such initiative. Background Carl Robbins is a recruiter for ABC

However, the direct supervisor is denying. There is not writing evidence of this authorization.
The last argument of Hasanie is that he was a victim of constructive dismissal. Basically a
constructive dismissal happens when an employer changes your working environment, inviting you

The Behavior of Bad Comm 1302 Dr. Jae Lee Theory: Theory of Reasoned Action Critic Number of
Words: 1513 October 16th, 2013 The Behavior of Bad I believe in the theory by Fishbein & Ajzen
on reasoned actions. That is, that we prefer to behave in a way that others, especially those that have
significant influence on us, find acceptable and normal. This theory certainly sounds reasonable and
I believe it is practiced by most people in the world. What would make someone go counter to the
theory of reasoned actions and behave in a way that is not acceptable by the people that are the most
influential in their lives? Could a major life event or events make someone change their thinking
and no longer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Attitude towards the action is a learned bias to respond favorably/unfavorably and consistently with
respect to the action. This includes the degree of certainty about consequences from the behavior
and likely outcomes. Subjective norms consist of social pressures which try to convince the
individual to comply with the desired behavior. Subjective norms also consist of normative beliefs
(what others prefer us to do) and motivation to comply (our desire to do what others expect). From
our attitudes and social pressures a behavioral plan is derived. Behavioral intention's is a course of
action to follow, that is, a plan to put behavior into effect. From the person's behavioral intentions
comes one's behavior. While the theory predicts behavioral intentions, it does not necessarily predict
actual behavior because people don't always behave in accordance with their intentions – as we
witness in Breaking Bad. Walter White clearly wrestles with the theory of reasoned action
throughout the show. He knows that making crystal meth is wrong and very bad for society. He
knows his family and friends feel this action is wrong. He knows the consequences of the action, if
caught, are bad and severe. Still, considering the attitudes, social and family pressures, and
consequences, his behavior is counter to what should and would be reasonable. What would turn a
reasonable man from doing "the more favorable" action? I believe that major life events, such as,

Conclusion
With Carl acting out some of these solutions. Carl could pull himself out of the trouble he has

However, this advice often reinforces gender schemas and stereotypical qualities such as sympathy for women and assertiveness for men. (Gannon, 2012) On the other hand, it is said that women are seen as being more supportive and less managerial. Women tend to display high levels of compassion and team–building skills. Additionally, women leaders are able to view situations from many different perspectives, enhancing their persuasive ability and making them better at persuasion than males. Women are also said to like a challenge. "An international study found that 70% of businesswomen asked their bosses for new challenges at work, which is less than half of the businessmen that did so." Lastly, it is said that women are honest and hard workers. It was found that 54% of women worked 9–11 hour days compared to 41% of men. The only morally relevant matter is whether Ford gave equal consideration to the interests of each affected party. Do you think Ford did this? Utilitarians means measuring overall happiness (Shaw, Barry & Sansbury 2009, pp 64–70). In this topic, Ford only care about his own profit and never care about other's life. Ford even calculated how much it cost for a human life. The damage for society and human life is not acceptable in Utilitarianism. (44 words) 4. Is cost–benefit analysis a legitimate tool? What role, if any, should it play in moral deliberation? Critically assess the example of cost–benefit analysis given in the case study. Is there anything unsatisfactory about it? Could it have been improved upon in some way? Yes, cost–benefit is a legitimate tool. "Cost–Benefit Analysis (CBA) estimates and totals up the equivalent money value of the benefits and costs to the community of projects to establish whether they are worthwhile" (An Introduction to Cost Benefit Analysis). But cost benefit analysis is just for calculating the benefit of the company, in a mathematical way. The appellants view the "substance" of the transaction is over the "form". Generally, taxpayers are bound by the form of their transaction and may not argue the substance triggers different tax consequences. The Tax Court found the form and substance of the transaction was a loan from the bank to VAFLA and not to the appellants. The proceeds were to be used in the operation of the business and petitioners were not free to dispose the loan. Nor were the payments reported as constructive dividends. If VAFLA had been profitable, the petitioners would argue that the loan was from the bank to the corporation. The loan repayments would not be on the appellants' behalf and would not be taxed as constructive income to them. Yet, there are the corporations controlling the operation of the society and they are all–in–time focus only on their interests. This is because the government found complicated to decide on agriculture and economics matters as they are complex soft systems where there is a lack of idea whether both of them are on track of work or under maintenance. In the article, Jenkins (2008, p. 10) described formal or informal organizations as the most extensive collectivity comprising tacit behavioral customs and norms as well as unambiguous regulations and policies in shared goals, in sets of control and authority, in criteria of employment and in operational standards. According to Ashforth and Mael (1989), an employee normally defined himself or herself in respect of organization, dealing with relation of individual to the organization. A complicated and continuously increasing mixture of planning, improvisation and habit, affected by emotional responses, health and well– being, access to natural resources, knowledge and view of world is known as individual identification. Group, a real but illusory identification, does not have the same ontological status as individuals because human individuals are known as actual entities. People who think themselves are activists symbolize they are collectives who manipulate the politic to their own interest. • 31. Comm 215: Case Study Comm/215 Case Study Introduction The common perception of a recruiter is evolving quickly in the workplace (Boswell 2001). Where once recruiters were viewed as a tool to simply acquire candidates, modern recruiters have greater responsibilities to their clients. These responsibilities can include tasks such as organizing paperwork, completing pre–screening measures, and even occasionally preparing training curriculum (Darrell 2002). Recruiters are further expected to provide quality screening of candidates and ensure the optimal match for each applicable position within a company (Posner 2006). As with any other job within a company, recruiters must take this work seriously and avoid procrastination to ensure a smooth transition for their candidates into the new workplace. Should the transition fail to be smooth, the full blame modernly falls on the recruiter who failed to use proper coordinating strategy. On that same note, the corporate world is rapidly changing and many job expectations are becoming unstated or implied. Often times training materials for positions cover standard policies without actually detailing the roles within a certain position. This lack of actual knowledge can cause gaps that require new employees to take initiative and speak up when they are unsure of their role within a position. The following case study details the implications of failing to take such initiative. Background Carl Robbins is a recruiter for ABC Inc. He has been in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, Kaufel argues that they offered opportunities for growth within the group and that Hasanie was only waiting for his package. Finally they are arguing that they needed more time to reorganize the group and assign responsibilities. • 41. Jae Lee Comm 1302 Essay The Behavior of Bad Comm 1302 Dr. Jae Lee Theory: Theory of Reasoned Action Critic Number of Words: 1513 October 16th, 2013 The Behavior of Bad I believe in the theory by Fishbein & Ajzen on reasoned actions. That is, that we prefer to behave in a way that others, especially those that have significant influence on us, find acceptable and normal. This theory certainly sounds reasonable and I believe it is practiced by most people in the world. What would make someone go counter to the theory of reasoned actions and behave in a way that is not acceptable by the people that are the most influential in their lives? Could a major life event or events make someone change their thinking and no longer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Attitude towards the action is a learned bias to respond favorably/unfavorably and consistently with respect to the action. This includes the degree of certainty about consequences from the behavior and likely outcomes. Subjective norms consist of social pressures which try to convince the individual to comply with the desired behavior. Subjective norms also consist of normative beliefs (what others prefer us to do) and motivation to comply (our desire to do what others expect). From our attitudes and social pressures a behavioral plan is derived. Behavioral intention's is a course of action to follow, that is, a plan to put behavior into effect. From the person's behavioral intentions comes one's behavior. While the theory predicts behavioral intentions, it does not necessarily predict actual behavior because people don't always behave in accordance with their intentions – as we witness in Breaking Bad. Walter White clearly wrestles with the theory of reasoned action throughout the show. He knows that making crystal meth is wrong and very bad for society. He knows his family and friends feel this action is wrong. He knows the consequences of the action, if caught, are bad and severe. Still, considering the attitudes, social and family pressures, and consequences, his behavior is counter to what should and would be reasonable. What would turn a reasonable man from doing "the more favorable" action? I believe that major life events, such as, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
