In the impressive play, Sophocles Antigone, translated by Dudley Fitts and Robert
Fitzgerald, the character that tends to receive more attention is Antigone the one
who was willing to die for her brother. Although most people may see Antigone as
the strong one, Ismene is the actual strong character in the play because she is able
to stay loyal to her state and leader in spite of her own sister asking her to disobey
the law. Antigone may be looked upon as the strong one but there is more to being
strong than just fighting. A strong person is also a person that goes against the
willingness of doing something because it s the right thing to do. Ismene is the
strong minded character in the play as she says no to going with her sister to bury
their brother together with honor. Fighting with your words is greater than
fighting with your actions. Ismene stood up to Antigone said that she would not

theirs, but being an independent individual doesn t mean that one should be

In this essay I will explain how sound developed in American cinema in the 1920s,
beginning with silent films in the 1910s. I will explore the development of sound
systems from large corporations in America, and the failed experiments with sound
beforehand. I will analyse the use of these sound systems by Warner Brothers and
Fox, the first filmstudios to adopt sound, and explore how this led to the Big Five
film studios also adopting the use of synchronised sound. I am going to examine the
reasons why synchronised sound developed from a teleological, contextual, and
technology determinist approach. To conclude I will evaluate the impact
synchronised sound had on the film industry in America during the 1920s.
As Raymond Fielding stated films have never truly been silent films even before
the introduction of synchronised sound, there was never any such thing as a silent
film at least as far as the audience was concerned (Cameron, 1980, p. 3 4). Films
were shown to audience s in vaudevilles and were often imitations of other vaudeville
acts. These films were played alongside music, often had a commentator to helps the
audience understand their narratives, and used instruments and actors to create sound
effects. Since films were never silent to begin with from a teleological approach you

Susan Anthony was never married, nor did she have any children. She spent a
large part of her life focused on fighting for rights and didn t take the time and do
any of these things that many women her age we doings. It wasn t until 1851 where
she took up the cause to participate into the women s rights division. Up until that
time she was devoted to temperance movement (daughter of temperance focusing on
the dangers of alcohol until the male members of the movement would not allow her

made a great team working together. Together they edited and published a woman s

over the country promoting woman s rights. Susan stood up for what she believed in
and carried this throughout her life. She gave, speeches, arranged meetings, put up
posters, and distributed leaflets. She encountered hostile mobs, and things thrown at

dream. And dreams about past experiences are meant to bring back old feelings and
emotions. They can trigger guilt, hope, and anything in between. In the novel, 1984,
by George Orwell, Winston Smith has many dreams that connect to the deep rooted
issues within Winston s conscience. These dreams signify everything that the Party

as possible. He wanted to make a chemistry on set that would show throughout the

individuals all enacted change in a positive way for human rights.
Melba Pattillo Beals was a very brave individual who fought to end segregation. She,
along with eight other students integrated Central High School, which was an all
white prestigious school. She was mistreated by her peers, for example, Melba
