Child Observational Study
Throughout the course what caught my interest was the methods we as human learn and how it can
be fundamental to our growth from childhood to adulthood. As children observe every action and
gesture around them, human tend to learn indirectly. This means we watch others and implicate
what they do in an observational learning. Human do observational learning in a very early age as
2–3 days old prior to being born. The pro of observational learning as toddlers and preschoolers is
helping solve complex problems, such as puzzle box or memory pattern. The observational learning
has three cognitive processes: attention, being able to observe the behavior of the person.
Remember, the ability to recall the action that was initiated later in the process of memory. Action,
reproducing the behavior in your best capacity through motor skills. This three factors are needed

different channels and influences in a child's learning stage. This can be through television shows or

Social Observation Paper
I decided for my social observation the mall would be a good place to start. I came there on a
Friday evening when there should be plenty of people to watch. I also sat in the Barnes and
Noble cafГ© after that to observe. I expected to see a lot of people shopping and conversing. A
few things did stand out to me within the few hours I was there. Some things I didn't expect to
see. We are expected to behave a certain way in public determined by our culture as to what is
acceptable. Some people stay well within the lines while some might stray outside the norms but

The larger group was Dominated by all males, which is another thing I didn't expect. You would
think that the group would have at least one or two females in it, statistically speaking. The smaller
group was female dominated with two females and a single male in it. I observed the male and he
didn't seem to follow his gender role4. This made me think because I have a gay friend and
homosexual men seem to familiarize with females more easily than heterosexual males. Also I
noticed a trend that most gay men spent most of their time being raised by their mother with a more
distant or even non–existent father figure. It is probably not fair to make assumptions about the
lone male in the group, but I'm assuming he fits in this stereotype5. The other thing I noticed
about this group is that they all seemed to be equal; there wasn't one that put themselves before
the others. I also sat in the cafГ© at Barnes and Noble for a while and observed socialization and
interactions. The first people I noticed when I was sitting were a couple walking through the store.
The Female had her man by the hand, I noticed her hand was palm down, signifying authority, and
was leading him off somewhere, maybe she was in a hurry to get somewhere or had just caught him
eying another female. Either way she seemed to be the more dominant one in the relationship, which
does not correspond with gender roles

The purpose of this observation assignment was to investigate and interpret the different types of
interactions between the individuals and groups present, as well as the environment in which these

Results
The seemingly intimate couples observed were quite interesting. Instead of being seated opposite
each other, most couples chose to sit next to each other so as to be within closer proximity of one
another. The couples that did sit opposite each other spent much of their time bent over or leaning
across the table so as to whisper or talk in a more secretive and intimate manner with their partner.
The observed body language of these couples was that of an inclusive "please do not bother us"
attitude. Their behavior compared to the rest of the occupants in the restaurant was very subdued
and much more private. The amount of bodily contact was also much greater than in other groups of
participants. Other than their initial glances around the restaurant when they were first seated,
almost none of the couples made a habit of surveying the restaurant, as were observed quite
frequently with the other members of the study. Also noted was the tendency for the females within
the younger–adult relationships to take leave to the toilet almost as soon as the couple was seated.
In some cases, the male ordered the female's drink while she was still in the toilet. Almost always,
no matter the age of the couple, alcoholic beverages were preferred to order. During the meal the

April 10, 2013 I seated myself in a booth with my back faced to the wall. It was here that I had an
ominous view of the Galleria food court. With pencil in hand, and notebook ready, I began taking
notes on the many observations I noticed in the three hour window that I sat and "people watched".
Nothing particular stuck out at me at first, I gazed around, from table to table, and only noticed the
general routines you would expect to find at any mall food court. Employee's meeting on their lunch
breaks, stay at home mom's getting a quick bite at chik–fil–a as they drag their children along to the

The girls would stay a fair distance, but keep their glances fixed on the table of boys, going out of
their way to gain their attention by laughing too loudly at a joke that wasn't funny, or busting a
move to their favorite song blaring from their iphones. None of the girls however were bold
enough to directly approach the boys off to the corner, they would make plenty of excuses to
walk toward them, but they never made direct contact with them. Families were less inclined to
approach this area, and began to disperse throughout other areas in the mall. I also noticed the
presence of security guards hired to monitor the crowds that were present later in the evening.
This form of interaction continued on for an hour or so, until the police officers came and
directed them away from their corners and urging them into the crowd and away from their area.
To my surprise, an hour later, the same groups were back During the dinner time rush, many of
the tables began to fill up, and at about 6:30 there were no clear tables. Often I saw that only one
person was occupying a table that could potentially seat 6, but no one was willing to sit down
where there was room. I noticed that many people stood around waiting for a table to open up, or
they would hover naggingly around a table until its occupiers finally gave in, and relinquished the

Observational learning is when learning happens by observing other people's actions. Observational
learning involves cognitive processes such as attention, motor skills, motivation, and memory. For
observational learning to take place the person who is observing the behavior needs to be paying
attention to it in order to learn it. Another important part of observational learning is being able to

Naturalistic Observation In order to study human development and perform naturalistic observation I
went to the mall. I selected a 9–year–old white girl as the subject for my observation. I observed the
subject for 30 minutes. During my observation the subject was not interrupted and was not aware of

During my observation the girl demonstrated that she was able to work in a team with her brother.
She was friendly and well socialized. According to Erikson's stages of social and emotional
development this kind of behavior means that the girl was on the 'school age' stage. It is absolutely
normal to be on this stage of social and emotional development at the age of 9. After my observation
I came to the conclusion that the subject meets the milestones and stages for the physical, cognitive,
social, and emotional development. Judging from the drawing that the girl made we can assume that
the girl is gifted. According to my naturalistic observation there is nothing unusual in the

interesting and informative process. It gave me the opportunity to apply different theories of

Context of Observation
With her mother's permission, I observed my cousin's 33–month–old female daughter named Clara.
This observation occurred at my grandparents' house, who are Clara's great–grandparents. My
grandma frequently babysits Clara and her older and younger sisters, so she is familiar with the
house. It was Thanksgiving when I did the observation with Clara, so she was surrounded by a
combination of familiar faces as well as people that she infrequently sees. For example, I only see
her during major holidays due to the fact I now live out of state, and while she has interacted with
me, I am more or less a stranger to her due to the infrequent nature of our interactions. All of the
Oswald family members came to Thanksgiving this year, so my grandparents small house was
packed with many people. Additionally, it was constantly noisy in the small house, with lots of
different activities occurring throughout the day.

To begin with, one of the most interesting things I observed with Clara is how clearly her behavior
demonstrated a secure attachment with her parents. While my grandmother's home was a familiar
place to Clara, adding so many family members, and family members she did not know, made the
situation somewhat unfamiliar with her. It was interesting to see how she interacted with myself, my
mother, and my fiancГ©, all of us whom do not have much interaction with Clara, at the beginning
of Thanksgiving. When we tried to interact with her, she would stare suspiciously at us, and then run
to her parents or grandmother. When we tried to interact with her in her "secure base", she would
bury her head into the shoulder of whoever was holding her.
Eventually, the cycle of going back to the secure base and exploring got bigger and bigger. As she, I
assume, continued to get confirmation that the unfamiliar situation was safe, and her secure base
was there to protect her, she would feel more comfortable venturing out, exploring the house more,
and interacting with unfamiliar faces. She would check in with her parents, grandparents, or aunts
by sitting on their lap for a little while, but as the night went on, the duration between these
check–ins became longer, and they also became
