his parents, Joshua and Matilda Dunbar, were slaves. Shortly after Paul was born his parents
separated. Paul was driven by his parent s life story to write poetry. In school Paul would edit
the newspaper for the school along with being a member of the literary and debate societies. As
Paul grew older he began writing and was a very intelligent student in school, he and his family
did not have much money; therefore he had to put his college career on hold. Paul took a job as
an elevator operator, which gave him opportunities to write. He was invited to read his poems at

traditional side to British environmental movements, with Rootes writing that environmentalismin
Britain was thoroughly moderate, respectable and reformist (Rootes 2003: 2). There are an
estimated 200 national environmental organisations in the Britain with around 4 5 million
members between them (Rawcliffe 1998; Rootes and Miller 2000, cited in Carter 2007). Since
1991, there has been a surge in radical protestin Britain (Doherty 1999) which have changed the
nature of British environmentalism and forced an otherwise closed political system to listen to the
environmental concerns of the nation. With reference to examples, this essay will examine the
mechanisms used by environmental movements in Britain and assess how successful these
attempts have been.
In the understanding of the environmental movement and the many organisations that it contains, it
is helpful to organise the movements in to categories or groups of shared and similar qualities.

In reading through these different texts I found an affinity towards the Upanishads, specifically the
Katha Upanishad. While reading through it, I came across the conversation between Nachiketas
and Yama, the Godof Death. In this conversation, Nachiketas is on his third boon and wishes to
