How To Create Suspense In Ray Bradbury s Graveyard For...
Ray Bradbury brings life to each and every book he writes including his book a Graveyard for
Lunatics. This is an exciting mystery/ thriller that literally brings the pages to life, along with
the characters and overall story. Graveyard for Lunatics can be placed in many different genres
but the more suited is mystery. Mystery is all about how they reveal the ending to you, they
make you guess yourself and it creates suspense along the way. I will unravel the mystery of
what is really underneath this book and all the hidden terms that come with it. The book
commences in Hollywood at Maximus films set across the street from a graveyard. A writer that
works at the company receives a letter that tells him to go to the cemetery after work. He decides
to go late at night, only to find a man on a ladder frozen dead. As lightning... Show more content on

Once he arrived he found himself in front of the former boss of the Maximus film company. But
that s not where the excitement happens. The climax is when Roy gets fired from his job at the
studios and is found in his apartment hanging from his ceiling. When his friend dies he begins to
look for the killer. The language and detail that is crammed into this one book is outstanding.an
example might be The Beast towered over him, his fists trembling, his body rocking back and
forth, in and out of control. Page 68. It describes every element and literary terms that are in here
but also figures out a way to make it short to the point. This example is shown on page 11 which
tells of a flashback of him as a child Last time I saw you I was thirteen years old on my roller
skates in front of the Film Studio, the week you were killed, twenty years ago... and page 54
shows sensory imagery The blood burned in my cheeks. My tongue was locked with guilt in my
mouth. I lowered my head. This was the beginning which sets the story s mood and

Ethos, Logos And Symbology
Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are modes of persuasion used to convince audiences. In the video,
Breaking News: Some Bullshit Happening Somewhere , uses Pathos very well by provoking the
audience to laugh and feel sorry for the residents. The actual Bullshit , is the language given by
the news anchors and how careless the somewhere is to have a bear loose. The language actually
pulls readers in and some find it funny rather than inappropriate. There were no facts included in
the video, so there s no Logos represented. As for Ethos, the video doesn t have an appropriate
language especially for the age group that watches the news, concluding the audiencedoesn t have

The Pros And Cons Of Wilful And Wanton Doctrine
The child injured on our client s property would most likely be ruled a trespasser by the courts, as
he was not invited onto the property and willingly admitted such. A property owner only has the
duty to not wilfully or wantonly injure a trespasser. Leffler v. Sharp, 891 So. 2d 152 (Miss. 2004).
Wilful and wanton injuryhas been defined by the courts as the conscious and intentional disregard
of and indifference to the rights and safety of others, which the defendant knows or should know
is reasonably likely to result in injury, damage, or other harm. Estrada v. Consol. Util. Servs.,
Inc., No. 5:10 CV 161 RLV, 2011 WL 2174467, *2 (W.D.N.C. June 2, 2011) Our client probably
wouldn t be ruled to have willfully or wantonly injured the trespassing child as he did not
consciously or intentionally injure the child. There is an exception which allows for premises
liability in the absence of wilful or wanton injury to a trespasser. The exception is premises liability
under the attractive nuisance doctrine.
There are two main purposes of the attractive nuisance doctrine. First, the attractive nuisance
doctrine acknowledges that children will trespass and may be injured while doing so. The doctrine
considers this, and then weighs the interest in protecting children with its second purpose: to avoid
an unreasonable burden on the property owner when ensuring their property is safe for trespassing
children. Liability to an injured child, that was either too young to appreciate

Rp-Us Visiting Forces Agreement
INTRODUCTION The United States and the Republic of the Philippines maintain close ties based
upon the U.S. Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty, the period of U.S. colonization, common
strategic and economic interests, and shared democratic values. The United States long maintained
sizable naval and air forces bases in the country. Although the Philippine Senate voted against U.S.
wishes to close American military installations in 1992, bilateral security cooperation resumed
following territorial disputes between the Philippines and China in 1994 and the launching of the
Global War on Terrorism in 2002. After 2001, the Philippines received one of the most dramatic

This was done as a means to obscure the fact that the US intended to deploy troops in the
Philippines with the purpose of launching the second front of the war on terrorism in order to
weaken the Al Qaeda network (Simon, 2002). On January 15, 2002, the United States was able to
send the first post September 11 set of troops outside of Afghanistan to the Philippines. However,
in order for actual warfare to take place, the US had to increase its realm of jurisdiction over the
exercises. It was speculated that this had been done through the signing of a treaty between the
United States and the Philippines, conducted in secret during President Arroyo s visit to the United
States in November of 2001 (Sarmiento,2001). This agreement, now identified as the Military
Logistical Supports Agreement (MLSA), was rumored to be a document that would allow the
United States to return as a permanent military presence in the country (The Philippine Star, 2003).
Filipino Congresswoman Imee Marcos has called the MLSA a Trojan horse, which when combined
with the controversial Visiting Forces Agreement of February 1998 would lead to the reintroduction

new opportunities and to establish a new life. The Namesake is a heartwarming family movie that
accurately portrays the difficulties that some of these immigrants face when beginning their lives in

piece of Bengali culture that he expresses is his name but he does not express it in a positive

why his father would name him after his favorite author Nikolai Gogol. Viewers do not find out the
reason for why Gogol s father named him Gogol until the middle of the movie; it has to do with
the very first scene of the film when Ashoke is the only survivor on a train that crashes. Even

Living With Parents For Life With Your Parents
Being away for a little over eight months, college students everywhere will come home for the
summer. There will be love, long nights, and many visits. Although there will be the, See you in the
morning! at around midnight as well. All college students will be different when returning home.
They should have grown and matured. While being mature, students will be assuming more
freedom over the summer. This may be to stay out later or just for being left alone and not
constantly checked on. Summer is a time for enjoying the outdoors and spending time with loved
ones. Making the summer manageable, it will take the work of the students and the parents.
Although living with your parents during a college summer break can be difficult, there are many
strategies to help the summer with your parents go smoother. You need
to be realistic with your
expectations. Everyone comes home with this expectation of being treated like an adult. The
problem that shows up is our attitude and behavior does not match. If you wantto be treated like an
adult you need to act like one ( When College Students Head Home ). You cannot come home
after being away for eight months and think that your parents are gonna hold your hand again.
Although, you managed to take care of yourself for all those months, returning like a two year old
is not appropriate. You will be treated the way you act. As a kid, your curfew
was most likely one of
the worst moments over the summer. Running around and being with

Clara Barton and The American Red Cross
The American Red Cross (ARC) Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross after becoming
involved in the work of the International Red Cross during the Franco Prussian War. Her heart of
giving and helping others convinced her that an American chapter was needed in her country in
1881. The ARC is a humanitarian organization that is dependent on the contributions of time,
blood, and money from the American public to support its multiple lifesaving services and
programs. The ARC s mission is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of
emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. The ARC from its

The leader needs to instill urgency into the workers and volunteers of the ARC. Taking an
organization that s on its knees requires great cooperation, initiative, and willingness to make
sacrifices from many people (Kotter, 2011). Based on the case study, the ARC lacks all these
characteristics for change to occur. It needs to look how to improve its response times, how to
become more efficient in collecting denotations and how to prioritize and quickly distribute the
donations it receives in a fair and efficient manner. It needs to hold its leaders to a higher standard
that will instill a culture of high moral standard in its employees and volunteers. Once the nation
sees a change in the behavior of the ARC they will be more willing to give donations and their
time to support disaster relief efforts. The Role Stakeholder Orientation Played in the Scenario It is
vital that every organization is able to accurately identify their stakeholders, whether it is a for
profit or a non profit organization. One of the most important reasons for identifying and
understanding stakeholders is that it allows the organization to recruit them as part of their efforts
and learn firsthand on their needs and requirements (Rabinowitz, 2014). We live in an uncertain

Analysis Of For Whom The Bell Toll By John Donne
The introduction to For Whom The Bell Tolls is a poem by John Donne, of which the last line
says any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never
send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee (Hemingway 3). This line encapsulates the
theme of the novel and defines the novel s meaning. Robert Jordan the main character of the
novel arrives in Spain as a volunteer, ready to fight and give his life for other people s freedom
and right to self determination. One of the reasons why this novel was so enjoyable was its focus
on the individual and intense discussions about life and death and morality of killing for and idea.
However, the reader can not help identifying with Jordan, as he plans his own future despite
subconsciously understanding his fate.
For Whom The Bell Tollstakes place during the Spanish Civil War, during a time period when
political divisions, between the right and Nd left were at all time highs around the world. The
novel discusses an execution of the fascists in one of the main character, Pillar s, town, and she
describes how political beliefs became enough to kill someone for. Don Guillermo was a fascist
but otherwise there was nothing against him... He had a rude way of speaking and he was
undoubtedly a fascist and a member of their club and he sat at noon and at evening in the cane
chairs of their club to read El Debate, to have his shoes shined, and to drink vermouth and seltzer
and eat roasted almonds,

Pre-Medical Application Research Paper
I was in the 2nd grade when I got my first glimpse of what being a doctor was like. A young
physician from the local hospital came in and spoke to my class about how it was so rewarding
working with medicine and helping people from all aspects of life. I figured that with my obsession
with the Discovery Channel, my aptitude in science, and the inspirational speech I had just
received, being a physicianwas something I wanted to do. I decided that becoming a physician
would be my life goal and I would do everything possible to ensure that I had the best chances at
accomplishing that goal. The gateway to making all of this happen: choosing the best college that
would make me a well rounded individual and a competitive medical schoolcandidate. When I
applied to Methodist University, I did so with the intent of receiving a rigorous education in a
setting where I felt I could relate to the student population and the area. While this may true for
what Methodist offered me, I felt behind as an aspiring medical student. After the first semester of
my sophomore year, I realized that Methodist offered little, if any, academic and extracurricular
opportunities for pre medical students. I realized that even though I loved the rigor of my courses

Industrial Culture And The Cultural Industries
1.Introduction
Nowadays, with the continuous development of social economy, the traditional industries of
economic growth begins to decline, in many countries around the world, cultural industries has
become the core of economic activities (Hesmondhalgh,2013). Naisbitt (1996) claims that the
industrial culture and the cultural industries are the two major trends of economic restructuring in
the future. The media industry as the core of the cultural industries was placed on prime location. It
is difficult to provide a perfect definition for this new product, however, Hilmes (2009) points out
this includes massive specific elements such as print, sound, screen, and digital bits in space
corporate communications, advertising, websites, novels, films, recordings, and music being
shared person to person on the internet. Media industry as a new term was mentioned in the 1930s
and 1940s.The media industry has continued vitality. For example, a program that began in 1937 on
daytime radio, still broadcasts on television today. From an industries approach to the critical study
of media, media industry has the close connection with other traditional industries, such as how to
come together people s interests from the efforts around the goods production or services, it also
has commercial propose making profit (Hilmes,2009).But for media industry, it still has some
special features which are distinctive from other industries. It can be argued that the media

Summary Of Frank OConnor s First Confession
In the two stories First Confession and Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been The two
main characters are Connie and Jackie. They both are in situations where they are living lies until
each is forced to confront the truth about themselves, and this act of confrontation is freeing them
both spiritually, even though in Connie s case it could lead to her death. In the story First Confession
the author Frank O Connor doesn t use any references that relate it back to events in history.
Regardless of this, there is some developments of context to Catholicism. In the story, Where Are
You Going, Where Have You Been by Joyce Carol Oates there is a reference or inspired by four
murders. Therefore, both Connie and Jackie find themselves at a crossroads to find the truth
about their lives. These two characters are on a journey where one may face death and the other
has to face a higher authority. In the story, First Confession, Jackie is the antagonist in the story
and he is dealing with a lot of negativity around him. Jackie also is living in lies himself and
throughout the story he is forced to find out his identity. Jackie s problems started when his
grandfather passed away, and his grandmother came to live with him. Jackie is a young boy who
is about to go to his first confession, and he is scared to death and does not want to go and face a
priest. His has been somewhat dishonest through the story, so he is contemplating confessing the
truth to the priest or not to confess

Steven Covey Habit One Analysis
Steven Covey s Habit One is about taking charge of your life. Instead of shifting the blame
elsewhere, you can be responsible for your own life. Also, you need to stop thinking the external
circumstances that you cannot control. I consider myself as a proactive person, but after
reading Covey s article, I think I tend to be more reactive. For instance, I am happy when the sky
is full of dark and grey clouds just before raining. And every time watching my team lose the last
game of the season in the playoff, I feel so sad that I cry all day long. Lastly, I usually do not
care what people think of me, but there is one exception. When criticized by the chef with my
work, especially when I really want my job well done, I consequently feel down for few days
afterwards. For better or worse, these are all examples of reactive behaviour, where my feelings
depend on the results of external events or processes that I have no control over. They are
completely outside my sphere of influence, yet they still control my life. This is why I
sometimes see myself as a victim, which leads to feel powerless. The words such as this team
makes me mad or he makes me feel so lonely are examples of the victim... Show more content on

I can decide to be happy even if there is a blizzard in hell. If I can watch a game just for fun, I

one: criticism from my favourite chef. I understand he gives me a feedback for me to become
better, but it is tough to swallow. In fact, I react every single word from my chef, when praised, I

hours but it was only 15 minutes. When we received the results, we were devastated. We were
told I had a mass growing in my jaw that was eating away my bone. From the x ray, it didn t look
like I had much bone left. Remember, I kept thinking that the doctor was wrong because my jaw
didn t hurt. When are doctors wrong? I kept thinking about the weekend before when my basketball
team played in a very rough basketball tournament at the Dakota Dome. My team played 5
games and made it to the championship. Lennox Lady O s took home a huge trophy. When I

Devastation hit me like a ton of bricks. P.E class wasn t even a possibility.

Polly Schoyer Brooks Queen Eleanor
In the book, Queen Eleanor by Polly Schoyer Brooks, it discusses the uncanny relationship between
King Henry and Thomas Becket. It starts when Henry appoints Becket to the role of archbishop.
Ultimately, it ends with Henry accidently giving an order to his knights to kill Becket for treason.
Nonetheless, Becket was correct in believing his faithfulness in the church came before the King,
because of how overwhelmingly prominent religionwas to the people s lives, Henry gave Becket
the role directly, and Henry didn t care that it would ruin their friendship because Henry was so
power hungry. To begin with, religion and the church was an extremely important factor in people s
lives in the middle ages. For example, the text states, ...he... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

To further support this argument, the author states, Becket warned the king that this would lead to
trouble and might end their friendship. which shows that Henry didn t care if he ruined their
close friendship as long as he got control over more. The text also states, Attempts to make up
always ended in failure, for each man now sought to ruin each other. which expresses how even
though Becket warned Henry of disagreements, they could never fix their issues and soon loathed
everything the other one did. This ended both of them seething and never being able to agree or
even work together, which led to them despising one another. On the other hand, one could also
make the argument that Becket should have given his loyalty to Henry first because Henry gave
him the job of archbishop. Others may think that Becket should have stayed loyal to the King
because they believe the church should always come second to the King. However, this is
problematic because although Henry gave him the position of archbishop, Becket had more
integrity and valued his responsibilities to the church more than his friendship with Henry. In
conclusion, although in some ways you could side with Henry, the smarter and better choice is to

What s The Rule In American Football
What s the Rule? Holding is a rule in American football that applies to both offense and defense.
Offensive holding can be called if the player grabs a defenders jersey, or if they use their hands or
arms to hold or pull back a defender. Defensive holding can be called if the defender grabs a
receiver, preventing them from running their route. The defender is allowed to hit or grab the
receiver within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. It can also be called if a defender tackles a player
who is not carrying the ball. However, this doesn t apply if the player was given a fake handoff
before being tackled. An offensive holding penalty results in a loss of 10 yards from the line of
scrimmage and a replay of the down. A defensive penalty results

The Monkey s Paw And The Keys Of Destiny Analysis
In both stories The Monkey s Paw and The Keys of Destiny they prove that money isn t the
source of happiness. Even though they have the same theme the two authors get this theme across
in two completely different ways. With the story The Monkey s Paw the author uses the death of
Herbert (the son of one of main character) to reveal the theme, while in The Keys of Destiny the
author uses the keys of destiny to get the same effect. The main reason that the themes are
presented differently is because of the craft moves that are being used. For example, in The
Monkey s Paw the author W.W. Jacobs used revealing actions and in The Keys of Destiny the
author Neil Philip uses symbolism.
The main factor in the different ways that the two authors got the theme across was the craft
moves. In The Monkey s Paw W.W. Jacobs uses revealing actions to get the main theme across.
In the story one of Mr. White s friends tried to throw out a mummified paw of a monkey because
he claims it was cursed. Disregarding that it was cursed and can cause consequences if he uses it
he asks for money which he would regret later in the story. W.W Jacobs shows this when he writes,
I wish for two hundred pounds, said the old man distinctly. (1.5) this quote is just the first action of
where he wishes for the money the revealing part comes later when the Whites obtains the money.
The revealing action is when the Whites hear about the death of their son that goes back to their
wish for money,

Eye Of The Beholder Analysis
Thesis (talks about similarities, differences, and themes) In The Birthmark and Eye of the
Beholder , two writers provide opinions on beauty and perfection. While the messages, provided by
the literary devices, are similar, the end results are very different. Hawthorn uses metaphors,
allusions, and symbolism to show that rejecting imperfection in life to obtain true beauty will lead
to death either identically, physically or both; while the Twilight Zone episode uses repetition,
idioms, and metaphors to show that the individual should appreciate their own beauty and not rely
on society s standards to tell them what is perfect. Subject 1 The Birthmark: Nothing is perfect as
nature has made every living thing with a mark of imperfection.... Show more content on

Smith tells Miss Tyler to say this to herself over and over again. This not only helps to build
Miss Tyler s self esteem as her society forces her to be segregated to a ghetto but also undermines
the teaching of that society. Her government believes in conformity and lack of individualism,
this idiom encourages people to look at the world from their own perspective and not the one
laid out by the government. Beauty is a social construct as true beauty weather mentally, as the
piece suggests, or physically is based on the perception of the observer. This is idea is reinforced
when we learn that Miss Tyler is actually beautiful by the audience s standards but is deemed
ugly by the show s standards. While we may see her as perfection the world which she lives in
sees her as a grotesque mistake created by nature. While society and science try to correct this
mistake, like that in The Birthmark, it also fails to obtain true perfection. This leads the reader to
believe that true beauty is not when the world accepts a person as beautiful but when a person

Comparing Dollhouse And Buffy, The Vampire Slayer, And...
It is said that Joss Whedon s work is not just to entertain his audience but he is also looking
towards sending out a message. Generally, when people look deeply into his text they can find
that he is usually sending a message to society about how gender roles and it is common for him to
play with them. In these three shows Dollhouse and Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, and Firefly
he takes
genderroles and moves them around at will.
In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this is seen so often because the entire show is based around it. You
have buffy this strong and witty girl who run s around slaying vampires. While all of the male
side characters are practically useless. A good example pulled from the footage of this would be
from episode 2. Xander which is Buffy s new male friend at the time insists on going with Buffy
to save his friend who had been captured by the vampires. As much as Buffy defied him to he still
was going no matter what she said so she just backed down. Then when they get there and confront
him Xander is basically useless. He just stands there helpless while Buffy saves the day.
Another episode of Buffy that is a good example of this would be in episode 4. The episode starts
off with these ridiculous boyhood fantasies in which Xander is this grand hero saving the damsel in
distress. But it s nothing but a fantasy as the episode goes on Xander starts a romantic relationship
with the substitute teacher. Then it turns out that the teacher was a monster that captures

Estelle s Faith Quotes
There is one more situation in which Estelle s bad faith is extremely evident in the play. Estelle
is experiencing her last connection to the human world where she states I m only half here. I m
only half wicked, and half of me is down there with you, clean and crystal clear as running water.
(No Exit 32). Estelle s bad faith in this case is represented by her inability to accept not only the
fact that since she is a sum of her actions she is indeed fully wicked but, it is also in her refusal to
accept the fact that although a person may not know what she has done it does not mean that the
part of her seen from that person in any represents who she truly is. When she states that half of me

He later is attempting to convince Inez that he is not a coward and states Can one possibly be a
coward when one s deliberately courted danger at every turn? And can one judge a life by a
single action. (No Exit 43). If it were the case that this was the only time Garcin were acting like
a coward it may not be possible to fully judge him based upon one action but, Inez points out that
For thirty years you dreamt you were a hero and condoned a thousand petty lapses. (No Exit 43).
Inez is arguing that Garcin has always been lying to himself and has been dreaming that he was
a hero but, has actually just been self deceiving himself whenever he did something cowardly
which she points out by saying he condoned a thousand petty lapses which is referring to perhaps
smaller cowardly acts that he has done throughout his life that he refused to accept as indicating
he was a coward. Then even past that she states Then a day came when you were up against it,
the red light of real danger and you took the train to Mexico. (No Exit 43) Inez perfectly points
out how Garcin has always been acting in bad faith up until the last actions he ever took. By
denying the fact that he is a coward and not the hero he attempts to paint himself as it reveals
that Garcin lived a life full of inauthenticity since he has never accepted the fact that he is a
coward because his actions are that of a coward. Garcin then tries defending himself one last
time against Inez as he argues I died to soon. I wasn t allowed time to to do my deeds. (No Exit
43) he is attempting to blame the fact that he died too soon as the reason he was never able to act
as the hero he tries to show himself as. This argument is directly counteracted by existentialism
which is pointed out by Inez when she says One always dies too soon... And yet one s life is
complete at that moment... You are your life, and nothing else.

Response to Rain, Steam and Speed by Joseph Mallord William Turner
Turner has out prodiged almost all former prodigies. He has made a picture with real rain, behind
which is real sunshine, and you expect a rainbow every minute. Meanwhile, there comes a train
down upon you, really moving at the rate of fifty miles a hour, and which the reader had best make

that the less is said the better, only it is a positive fact that there is a steam coach going fifty miles

Gerald Finley says that for those who considered these new developments in a positive light it
was reassuring that the laws of science and technology were, after all rooted in nature and these
developments seemed to promise widespread economic and social improvement. ; At the same
time there were detractors and this was because of the perceived threat of further encroachment
on what some considered to be the natural order of things . Railroads struck many at this time as
the seminal achievement of the industrial age, so it is not surprising that public ambivalence
extended to the steam locomotive and rail travel as well. It signified to many the destruction of
the countryside and a change in the old agrarian based social order. In conjunction with this shift,
which was really a shift to a capitalist economy, the steam revolution fundamentally changed the
fabric of peoples lives, it changed the way people experienced time and space, it shrunk the
boundaries of their world and changed their imagined geographies. This had implications for the
way people perceived the world at large and also imaged the nation.
The subject matter of Rain, Steam and Speed is the Maidenhead railway crossing of the Thames.

Application Of The Gauss Newton Method
As a final example of the application of the Gauss Newton method, we attempted to find the best
fit for a set of data with a sinusoidal function. This example illustrates how the Gauss Newton
method can applied to functions with more that just two variables, and that it can be applied to
an equation of any form. In it, will attempt to model temperature data with a sinusoidal function.
Below is a chart of the average high temperatures per month of the city of Monroe Louisiana
(courtesy of weather.com). Month Temperature (Fahrenheit) January 56 February 60 March 69
April 77 May 84 June 90 July 94 August 94 September 88 October 79 November 68 December
58 As can be seen by the chart, this data appears to take the form of a sinusoidal function.
Therefore, we will try to fit it with the general form of this function, shown below:
y(t)=Aв€
—sin(wв€
—t+phi )+C A is the amplitude, w is the frequency, t is time, phi is the phase
and C is a constant. Given this equation there are four unknowns that must be found. In the code,
these four variables are represented by the column vector a and are returned in the column vector
w. As always, the code requires that we first solve, analytically, for the partial derivatives required
for the Jacobian. In this example, the function to be minimized, r, is given by:
rk=qkв€’(a1в€
—sin(a2в€
—pk+a3)+a4) where rk is the residual at the particular temperature value,
qk is the measured temperature and pk is the month, represented in the code as January = 1,

The Feminism And The Role Of Female Representation On The...
We seem to being more and about the feminism and importance of female representation in the
workplace and all aspects of life. An important area that often gets discussed is female
representation in movies and media. This is particularly important because people often use movies
to form the opinions on how one should act, talk or even look. Although it may seem like we have
made great efforts to treat women equally, it s important to actually look into whether or not that s
happening. Women are still underrepresented in filmand often given roles that fit into a certain
stereotype. Although not the first actress, Florence Lawrence was one of the most recognizable
women (Klein) in American silent films in the early 1900s. Although she was in a large amount
of films she still only played a typical female role of a wife, daughter, sister, or lover. She did get
to sometimes play a role that we would even know today such as Cleopatra or Juliet (Klein) we
still never got to see in a strong independent role. Some of the biggest actresses in the 1930s and
1940s Ingrid Bergman, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, and Rita Davis. Although they all were
successful and some even won an Oscar or two, a stand out from this time period was Katherine

The Power Of Responsibility In The Great Gatsby
The power of responsibility
Responsibility is a very important part of a person s personality and . Lennie and Gatsby run from
their responsibilities. Both did awful things and it ended up getting them in a very bad situation. In
real life running from responsibilities makes people look egotistical or unreliable because they don
t want to get themselves in trouble.
The Great Gatsby was written by F.Scott Fitzgerald and is about Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby. It
tells the story of how James Gatz, a young farm boy turned himself into Jay Gatsby, a rich and
lively man. Always chasing after one person, Daisy. Of Mice and Men was written by John
Steinbeck and tells people about the struggles of the 1930 s workers in California through George
and Lennie. George and Lennie are two workers who always stayed by each other s side through
thick and thin even though George didn t want Lennie around.
Responsibility is something that everyone has and sometimes people might have to run. Though in
most cases people should learn to stay and face their responsibilities. If people ignore a
responsibility then it might help resolve the situation and if they don t ignore it any trouble or strife
can be prevented.

The Issue Of Underage Drinking
The issue of underage drinking has been constant for many years. The law for the minimum
drinking age allows people 21 and older to legally drink alcoholic beverages. It is hard to enforce
this law especially on college campuses where lots of underage drinking takes place. Someone
that is 18 and older can get into some clubs where they are getting drinks even though they are
not supposed to. There is a level of responsibility they needs to be taken when people are
drinking. They should know how to handle themselves when alcohol is in their system.
Consuming too many alcoholic beverages can cause health issues, behavior issues, and have
other harmful effects on a person. The issues that come along with drinking alcohol will affect
teenagers and college students more than it would affect someone that is 21 or older. The
minimum drinking age law should remain at 21 to keep more young adults from encountering
issues associated with drinking. Young adults that are in the age range of 18 20 are more likely
to be more reckless than someone who is older and more mature. Adolescents hit the age of 18
and feel like they are grown and finally able to do what they want to do. Some have already
started drinking alcohol and will start to drink it more frequently. Having alcohol in their systems
will cause their behavior to change and could affect their rationale of thinking. Their senses will be
affected as well which causes more accidental injuries, altercations, and driving

How To Connect A Hot Tub Essay
What To Expect When Connecting A New Hot Tub To Electricity
If you re planning to buy a hot tub, one thing you ll have to do is hire an electrician to get the
electrical panel ready. While you might be able to pour the foundation for the tub and assemble it
once it s delivered, connecting it to electricity should be done by a licensed residential electrician.
Here is a quick look at the process of hooking your tub up to electricity.
Check Local Codes
Hiring an electrician isn t only for safety reasons, it s also so the work is done up to code. You ll
want to call your local codes office and find out if you need a permit and inspection for your

This is done by laying down a conduit first. This is a tube that holds the cords so they are
protected from water, insects, and other harm. The conduit can be buried underground or placed
in a trench in a concrete foundation. If you plan to bury the conduit, you want to check with your
local utility companies to make sure you won t dig in areas where pipes and wires are buried close
to your house. Once the conduit is where you want it, the electrician pulls the wires through it and
connects one end of the wires to the electrical panel and the other end to the hot tub.
The final step before filling your hot tub with water is to have it inspected. This may be a
necessary step required by a local codes inspector to make sure the work is done right and your
tub is safe. Even if your local codes office doesn t require an inspection, you want to make sure
the electrician performs an inspection of the work from start to finish. Then you can rest easy

The Importance Of Cognitive Development In Willy Wonka And...
Childhood, as we all know, is the state or period of being a child; the early period in the
development of something (Merriam Webster). The movie Willy Wonka the Chocolate Factory
(1971) illustrates five different children with each having different behavior, and they have one
thing in common they are the only child in their family. These children are in the middle
childhood, primary school age, around age seven or eight. What makes them different from each
other is interesting. It allows the viewers to think if their behavior is either result of their
experience or how they were raised. How they perceive things and how they behave are part of
their cognitive development. The major domain of early childhood development is their cognitive
development and the arguable aspects of the Nature Nurture. The term cognition refers to how the
mind operates and the study of cognitive development focuses on how the mind thinks and learns
during the early years of life (Universal Class, Inc.). The major premise of Piaget s theory is that
children go through various stages of cognitive development, all of which are distinct from one
another and influenced by both nature and nurture. (Universal Class, Inc.). Nature is what we think
of as pre wiring and is influenced by genetic inheritance and other biological factors. Nurture is
generally taken as the influence of external factors after conception, e.g., the product of exposure,

Dark And Light Imagery Within The Hobbit Essay example
The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien is said to be one of the greatest children s novels of all time. The
novel, due to its use of such characters as goblins, elves, trolls, giants, and others is in tradition, a
fairy tale. The tale centers on a small hobbit by the name of Bilbo Baggins. It follows the journey
of a band of dwarves, a wizard named Gandalf, and their robber, Bilbo on their way to retrieving
treasure that had long been taken away from them. The hobbittraveled all over Middle Earth,
beginning with Bilbo s tiny hobbit hole in the ground, to Mirkwood forest, to finally reaching the
Mountain in which the dragon Smaug lives. Tolkien uses a large amount of imagery in his writing
which can been seen through settings in The Hobbit. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These forms of figurative language help the reader create a mental picture . For example, when
Bilbo Baggins meets Gollum, a strange, slimy creature who lives deep in the caves of Moria, he
describes Gollum s eyes as В… the light of his eyes burned with a pale flame (92). Gollum s eyes
are not really pale flames, but because hi iris was such a bright color, in contrast to the dark, Bilbo
had observed it as pale. Also, his eyes were not actual flames . Gollum was infuriated by the lose of
his ring and therefore Bilbo saw rage in his expression, his eyes were not flames .
The majority of Tolkien s imagery is found in nature. In 1999, Karen Oberst concluded that Tolkien
s greatest use of nature was when he anthropomophized it, which means to attribute human
characteristics to something that is not human. This form of imagery is an on going pattern
throughout Tolkien s tale. Bilbo Baggins repeatedly advises human characteristics to the inanimate
objects that are around him, which adds profoundness to Tolkien s tale. For instance, Bilbo
describes the west part of the Mountains on the way to Homely Home as having no trees and no
valleys and no hill to break the ground in front of them, only one vast slope going slowly up and
up to meet the feet of the nearest mountain [В…] (Tolkien 52). Tolkien used this example of
imagery to emphasize the bleakness of the situation.

What Is Long Term Growth In A City
Designing a layout for a brand new city being developed would have its difficulties but would all be
structured around its geographic location. Developing a city along the coastline would be
extremely different than developing a city in the mountains with reference to reducing traffic within
the central business district. Navigating a mountain range can potentially restrict routing options
when constructing a highway system, whereas being on the coast give you access to plenty of
more public transit options. I believe that long term growth in a cityalong the coastline has the
opportunity to be more prosperous and effective in reducing traffic in the central business district
than a city in any other geographic location. Most major cities have sport teams for baseball,

A major problem with traffic among large cities is that their central business district is located too
close to their airport or that the airport is in a location where there is only one major route to
navigate there. The perfect location for this airport would be a few miles away from the central
business district along the location where multiple highways along with the interstate intertwine;
giving multiple entry points to the airports entrance. These highways will lead to different locations
around the city where suburban areas are located giving the traveler multiple regions to easily

Considering its popularity among students, Facebook high school version was launched in
September, 2005. Its members are multiplying greatly with each day passing i.e. Facebook had
100million users on Aug. 26, 2008 while this number increased to 500million on Jul. 21, 2010
and growth rate was 153% during the last year (blog.Facebook.com). Social networking sites
brought many positive implications to human life. The idea of social globe or global village has
been translated into reality through these sites connecting millions of people from all around the
world. Simultaneous communication of many people even at distant places promotes the creation
of social capital fetching personal, professional and social benefits not only to the users of these
sites but to the society as a whole. But every technological revolution brings some dilemmas and
darker issues along as well. Likewise, these increasing links and networks online are setting back
the real values of life especially students are accepting some adverse impacts from using these sites
as they form the major chunk of SNSs users. An ever increasing growth rate of SNSs not only calls
for the parental and teacher monitoring of student users but also attracting the focus of
academicians and researchers towards this phenomenon. In September, 2005, out of total adult
internet users (18 29 years) 16% were those who were using any social networking site and this

them in the questionnaire. The cut off score for classifying a buyer and non buyer is given by
the formula C = (n2Y1+n1Y2)/ (n1+n2) From the data obtained from the survey, we have
identified 50 non users and 39 users. Thus substituting n1= 52 and n2=39, Y1= 1.029 and Y2=

ABSTRACT
Designing and embedding a watermark for VoIP is the main goal of this paper, A new model is
introduced and characterized by high robustness, high security and must be non perceptual. The
watermarking model is suitable for real time service and supports the needs of embedding the
watermark into the traffic of VoIP and its extraction additionally this model offers authentication
and integrity. The model based on digital watermarkingand steganography. Another factor was
taken in consideration; the amount of data used and its influence on the voice quality of service. the
model is implemented using C# code for both embedding and extracting the watermarking spite of
the intended cheating mechanisms that might complicate the send/receive conditions. In addition,
the model performance has confirmed its robustness and quality of service.

Why Batteries Are Very Important
Batteries, The Science Behind Them, and Their Importance Batteries are extremely important.
But most people don t know the science behind it or how imperative they really are. Today, I will
tell you about this, the items they power, they re importance, and how they really work. A
battery is a device that stores electrical energy in the form of chemical energy. When it comes to
the use of batteries, they are imperative to most people s lives. They re used for practically
everything like flashlights, watches, calculators, phones, laptops, and power tools. Bigger things
include cars, trucks, buses, lawn mowers, wheel chairs, forklifts, trains, and satellites. So they re
very important and even more important when you consider that they power smoke and carbon
dioxide detectors. As said before, society is heavily impacted by batteries. Without them,
everything would always need to be plugged in, or need to be charged. There d be lots of outlets
and plugs without batteries. But how many important everyday items do we use that run on
batteries? Well, there would be no such thing as wrist watches or flashlights or anything portable
that runs on electricity. Batteries make everything so convenient, we forget about them. Switching
on the TV, texting on your mobile while walking around, or taking pictures would never be so easy

A battery has three main parts: it has two terminals made of chemicals, which are called the anode
and the cathode. There s also the electrolyte, which detaches the two terminals. The electrolyte is a
chemical medium. It allows the flow of electrical charge between the cathode and anode and when
a device is connected to a battery the chemical on the anode releases electrons to the negative
terminal. This is called an oxidation reaction. While this is happening, at the positive terminal the
cathode accepts electrons. This completes the circuit for the flow of

Comparison Of War And Dulce Et Decorum Est
Wilfred Owen s poem Dulce et Decorum Est and Lovelace s poem To Lucasta, Going to the Wars
have different perceptions of war. Owen explores the ideas of depressing and dark tones while
explaining his trauma were Lovelace tests his perspective of war through love and honor. These
poets express their ideas when using imagery and diction to convey depressing emotions and love.
Owen has uses imagery serveral times throughout his poem to explain his traumatic event. For
example, the narrator writes, Gas! Gas! Quick, boys! An ecstasy of fumbling, Fitting the clumsy
helmets just in the time. describes the idea of scared men in a panic try to put gas masks on.
Also in the sentence Wilfred uses the words clumsy helmets as a possible way of mocking them
for not saving his friend. Another example Wilfred writes, is the text, Dim, through the misty
panes and thick green light, As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. which paints a picture of
Wilfred in a cloud of smoke, barely seeing his friend die and also implying that there was nothing
he could do because of how he only describes he was blinded by the smoke. Overall, Wilfred uses
imagery to create a depressing tone when he is not able to save his friend. ... Show more content on

Through his writing, he chooses the words Sweet and Dear as a term of endearment to Lucasta.
This is showing his affection toward Lucasta but he also finds love in war as in honor and possibly
honor before love . For example, Lovelace wrote, I could not love thee, Dear, so much, Love I
not honour more. which is saying that even if he does love Lucasta, by using Dear , he will
choose going to fight in a war instead. The word choice of love and honour in the same sentence
shows his debacle between the two. To sum up, Richard Lovelace s specific word choice better
defines his meaning of love and his belief in

atmosphere is said to have nitrogen as well as methane and carbon dioxide. Pluto has both dark

it is believed that Pluto is partially covered in ice. The surface temperature is thought to be

Essay on Walt Whitman s Song of Myself
Walt Whitman s Song of Myself
This paper deals with Walt Whitman s Song of Myself in relation to Julia Kristeva s theories of
abjection my paper does not point to abjection in the text, but rather the significance of the abscence
of abjection. This abscence, looming and revolting, arises from Whitman s attemt to refigure a
conception of sublimity which delimits the material which can trigger the sublime moment.
Whitman s democracy of the sublime is inclusive of those figures on the American landscape, their
lives and voices, which are functionalized into his world. This paper employs the theories of

It lies there, quite close, but it cannot be assimilated. It beseeches, worries, and fascinates desire,
which, nevertheless, does not let itself be seduced. [1]
The strange elegance of this specter looms in the relief, in the archaic layers of Song of Myself. It
is beyond the foregrounded inversive space at times utopic and sublime, the space is permeated
with universal brotherhood, happiness, the compelled sentimental that I attempt to delve into, that
source from which generates the repulsive, hidden quivering of a text which, though cast out and
forced into absence, looms in the shadowed relief. The edification of his text and of his readership
is attempted through the construction of an inversive space which refigures the sublime: the apex
of the cultured. I have chosen those moments in the text in which the poet nears the threshold of
bordering abject in order to construct his sublime utopian vision. It is here, this marked
refigurement where ecstasy occurs, where material which triggers the sublime is the signal of
another text; a repulsive reading looms from the absence of abjection
An invocation of the self begins Song of Myself, positioning the text as an edification of the
American readership: I celebrate myself, and sing myself, And what assume you shall assume, For
every atom belonging to me as god belongs to you (lines 1 3). Thus Whitman s work joins with the

Research Paper On Lean Manufacturing
Lean Manufacturing

It s not necessary to change, survival is not mandatory Demming
Lean manufacturing a systematic approach to doing more with less. In other words, Lean, is a
method of increasing the amount of a manufacturer s output, while reducing the amount of
resources put in. Lean is of great interest to manufacturers around the world. Companies of all sizes
employ lean principles to employ large improvements to quality, marketability and customer service.
Lean is a production philosophy, a way of manufacturing a product using less resources. These
principles allow a manufacturer to produce more with less by eliminating waste. Less time,

Lean has been applied to many industries and have worked for factories of all sizes. Most factories
have less than 250 employees.
Small batches are used to smooth production flow in the plant.
Total manufacturing effort is divided into value added activities and into non value added activities.
Lean manufacturing aims to reduce the amount of non value added activities. Optimising flow of
production allows manufacturers to reduce the non value added activites and increase the value
adding activities.
History
The idea that reducing waste will save money is not a novel one, so lean manufacturing has
actually been around for hundreds of years, for example the idea of an assembly line far predates
the modern lean manufacturing era. However the modern iteration of lean manufacturing was
developed in Japan by Toyoda, the founder of Toyota. The Toyota Production System was translated
to English in 1975 and today is used as the starting point of lean manufacturing worldwide.
Many people believe that the Toyota production system was the beginning of Lean manufacturing.
Translated to English in 1975. 1990 researchers learned that Toyota was the most efficient
auomotive systems in the world. The machine that changed the world.

Conflict at Work
Definition of Conflict
Interpersonal Conflict occurs between two or more persons when attitudes, motives, values,
expectations or activities are incompatible and if those people perceive themselves to be in
disagreement (John Hunt, 1982)
Conflict Theory
Conflict theory talks about why people think and act the way they do and what conditions and
causes influence a certain response in human behaviour. While there have been many different
views on conflict theory and it has taken a multitude of different forms, it often seems that the
Marxian theory is the one that represents the predominant example of conflict theory in sociological
literature.

  • 2. How To Create Suspense In Ray Bradbury s Graveyard For... Ray Bradbury brings life to each and every book he writes including his book a Graveyard for Lunatics. This is an exciting mystery/ thriller that literally brings the pages to life, along with the characters and overall story. Graveyard for Lunatics can be placed in many different genres but the more suited is mystery. Mystery is all about how they reveal the ending to you, they make you guess yourself and it creates suspense along the way. I will unravel the mystery of what is really underneath this book and all the hidden terms that come with it. The book commences in Hollywood at Maximus films set across the street from a graveyard. A writer that works at the company receives a letter that tells him to go to the cemetery after work. He decides to go late at night, only to find a man on a ladder frozen dead. As lightning... The climax is when Roy gets fired from his job at the studios and is found in his apartment hanging from his ceiling. When his friend dies he begins to look for the killer. The language and detail that is crammed into this one book is outstanding.an example might be The Beast towered over him, his fists trembling, his body rocking back and forth, in and out of control. Page 68. It describes every element and literary terms that are in here but also figures out a way to make it short to the point. This example is shown on page 11 which tells of a flashback of him as a child Last time I saw you I was thirteen years old on my roller skates in front of the Film Studio, the week you were killed, twenty years ago... and page 54 shows sensory imagery The blood burned in my cheeks. In the video, Breaking News: Some Bullshit Happening Somewhere , uses Pathos very well by provoking the audience to laugh and feel sorry for the residents. The actual Bullshit , is the language given by the news anchors and how careless the somewhere is to have a bear loose. The language actually pulls readers in and some find it funny rather than inappropriate. There were no facts included in the video, so there s no Logos represented. As for Ethos, the video doesn t have an appropriate language especially for the age group that watches the news, concluding the audiencedoesn t have trust in the author/ video. In the video, ... • 4. The Pros And Cons Of Wilful And Wanton Doctrine The child injured on our client s property would most likely be ruled a trespasser by the courts, as he was not invited onto the property and willingly admitted such. A property owner only has the duty to not wilfully or wantonly injure a trespasser. Leffler v. Sharp, 891 So. 2d 152 (Miss. 2004). Wilful and wanton injuryhas been defined by the courts as the conscious and intentional disregard of and indifference to the rights and safety of others, which the defendant knows or should know is reasonably likely to result in injury, damage, or other harm. Estrada v. Consol. Util. Servs., Inc., No. 5:10 CV 161 RLV, 2011 WL 2174467, *2 (W.D.N.C. June 2, 2011) Our client probably wouldn t be ruled to have willfully or wantonly injured the trespassing child as he did not consciously or intentionally injure the child. There is an exception which allows for premises liability in the absence of wilful or wanton injury to a trespasser. The exception is premises liability under the attractive nuisance doctrine. There are two main purposes of the attractive nuisance doctrine. First, the attractive nuisance doctrine acknowledges that children will trespass and may be injured while doing so. The doctrine considers this, and then weighs the interest in protecting children with its second purpose: to avoid an unreasonable burden on the property owner when ensuring their property is safe for trespassing children. Liability to an injured child, that was either too young to appreciate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Rp-Us Visiting Forces Agreement INTRODUCTION The United States and the Republic of the Philippines maintain close ties based upon the U.S. Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty, the period of U.S. colonization, common strategic and economic interests, and shared democratic values. The United States long maintained sizable naval and air forces bases in the country. Although the Philippine Senate voted against U.S. wishes to close American military installations in 1992, bilateral security cooperation resumed following territorial disputes between the Philippines and China in 1994 and the launching of the Global War on Terrorism in 2002. This was done as a means to obscure the fact that the US intended to deploy troops in the Philippines with the purpose of launching the second front of the war on terrorism in order to weaken the Al Qaeda network (Simon, 2002). On January 15, 2002, the United States was able to send the first post September 11 set of troops outside of Afghanistan to the Philippines. However, in order for actual warfare to take place, the US had to increase its realm of jurisdiction over the exercises. It was speculated that this had been done through the signing of a treaty between the United States and the Philippines, conducted in secret during President Arroyo s visit to the United States in November of 2001 (Sarmiento,2001). This agreement, now identified as the Military Logistical Supports Agreement (MLSA), was rumored to be a document that would allow the United States to return as a permanent military presence in the country (The Philippine Star, 2003). Filipino Congresswoman Imee Marcos has called the MLSA a Trojan horse, which when combined with the controversial Visiting Forces Agreement of February 1998 would lead to the reintroduction of US troops in the Philippines (Philippine Daily Inquirer, ... They should have grown and matured. While being mature, students will be assuming more freedom over the summer. This may be to stay out later or just for being left alone and not constantly checked on. Summer is a time for enjoying the outdoors and spending time with loved ones. Making the summer manageable, it will take the work of the students and the parents. Although living with your parents during a college summer break can be difficult, there are many strategies to help the summer with your parents go smoother. The ARC is a humanitarian organization that is dependent on the contributions of time, blood, and money from the American public to support its multiple lifesaving services and programs. The leader needs to instill urgency into the workers and volunteers of the ARC. Taking an organization that s on its knees requires great cooperation, initiative, and willingness to make sacrifices from many people (Kotter, 2011). Based on the case study, the ARC lacks all these characteristics for change to occur. It needs to look how to improve its response times, how to become more efficient in collecting denotations and how to prioritize and quickly distribute the donations it receives in a fair and efficient manner. It needs to hold its leaders to a higher standard that will instill a culture of high moral standard in its employees and volunteers. Once the nation sees a change in the behavior of the ARC they will be more willing to give donations and their time to support disaster relief efforts. The Role Stakeholder Orientation Played in the Scenario It is vital that every organization is able to accurately identify their stakeholders, whether it is a for profit or a non profit organization. • 10. Analysis Of For Whom The Bell Toll By John Donne The introduction to For Whom The Bell Tolls is a poem by John Donne, of which the last line says any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee (Hemingway 3). This line encapsulates the theme of the novel and defines the novel s meaning. Robert Jordan the main character of the novel arrives in Spain as a volunteer, ready to fight and give his life for other people s freedom and right to self determination. One of the reasons why this novel was so enjoyable was its focus on the individual and intense discussions about life and death and morality of killing for and idea. However, the reader can not help identifying with Jordan, as he plans his own future despite subconsciously understanding his fate. For Whom The Bell Tollstakes place during the Spanish Civil War, during a time period when political divisions, between the right and Nd left were at all time highs around the world. The novel discusses an execution of the fascists in one of the main character, Pillar s, town, and she describes how political beliefs became enough to kill someone for. Don Guillermo was a fascist but otherwise there was nothing against him... • 11. Pre-Medical Application Research Paper I was in the 2nd grade when I got my first glimpse of what being a doctor was like. A young physician from the local hospital came in and spoke to my class about how it was so rewarding working with medicine and helping people from all aspects of life. I figured that with my obsession with the Discovery Channel, my aptitude in science, and the inspirational speech I had just received, being a physicianwas something I wanted to do. I decided that becoming a physician would be my life goal and I would do everything possible to ensure that I had the best chances at accomplishing that goal. The gateway to making all of this happen: choosing the best college that would make me a well rounded individual and a competitive medical schoolcandidate. When I applied to Methodist University, I did so with the intent of receiving a rigorous education in a setting where I felt I could relate to the student population and the area. While this may true for what Methodist offered me, I felt behind as an aspiring medical student. After the first semester of my sophomore year, I realized that Methodist offered little, if any, academic and extracurricular opportunities for pre medical students. Industrial Culture And The Cultural Industries 1.Introduction Nowadays, with the continuous development of social economy, the traditional industries of economic growth begins to decline, in many countries around the world, cultural industries has become the core of economic activities (Hesmondhalgh,2013). Naisbitt (1996) claims that the industrial culture and the cultural industries are the two major trends of economic restructuring in the future. The media industry as the core of the cultural industries was placed on prime location. It is difficult to provide a perfect definition for this new product, however, Hilmes (2009) points out this includes massive specific elements such as print, sound, screen, and digital bits in space corporate communications, advertising, websites, novels, films, recordings, and music being shared person to person on the internet. Media industry as a new term was mentioned in the 1930s and 1940s.The media industry has continued vitality. For example, a program that began in 1937 on daytime radio, still broadcasts on television today. From an industries approach to the critical study of media, media industry has the close connection with other traditional industries, such as how to come together people s interests from the efforts around the goods production or services, it also has commercial propose making profit (Hilmes,2009).But for media industry, it still has some special features which are distinctive from other industries. • 14. Summary Of Frank OConnor s First Confession In the two stories First Confession and Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been The two main characters are Connie and Jackie. They both are in situations where they are living lies until each is forced to confront the truth about themselves, and this act of confrontation is freeing them both spiritually, even though in Connie s case it could lead to her death. In the story First Confession the author Frank O Connor doesn t use any references that relate it back to events in history. Regardless of this, there is some developments of context to Catholicism. In the story, Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been by Joyce Carol Oates there is a reference or inspired by four murders. Therefore, both Connie and Jackie find themselves at a crossroads to find the truth about their lives. These two characters are on a journey where one may face death and the other has to face a higher authority. In the story, First Confession, Jackie is the antagonist in the story and he is dealing with a lot of negativity around him. Jackie also is living in lies himself and throughout the story he is forced to find out his identity. Jackie s problems started when his grandfather passed away, and his grandmother came to live with him. Also, you need to stop thinking the external circumstances that you cannot control. I consider myself as a proactive person, but after reading Covey s article, I think I tend to be more reactive. For instance, I am happy when the sky is full of dark and grey clouds just before raining. And every time watching my team lose the last game of the season in the playoff, I feel so sad that I cry all day long. Lastly, I usually do not care what people think of me, but there is one exception. When criticized by the chef with my work, especially when I really want my job well done, I consequently feel down for few days afterwards. For better or worse, these are all examples of reactive behaviour, where my feelings depend on the results of external events or processes that I have no control over. It starts when Henry appoints Becket to the role of archbishop. Ultimately, it ends with Henry accidently giving an order to his knights to kill Becket for treason. Nonetheless, Becket was correct in believing his faithfulness in the church came before the King, because of how overwhelmingly prominent religionwas to the people s lives, Henry gave Becket the role directly, and Henry didn t care that it would ruin their friendship because Henry was so power hungry. This ended both of them seething and never being able to agree or even work together, which led to them despising one another. On the other hand, one could also make the argument that Becket should have given his loyalty to Henry first because Henry gave him the job of archbishop. Others may think that Becket should have stayed loyal to the King because they believe the church should always come second to the King. However, this is problematic because although Henry gave him the position of archbishop, Becket had more integrity and valued his responsibilities to the church more than his friendship with Henry. • 22. The Monkey s Paw And The Keys Of Destiny Analysis In both stories The Monkey s Paw and The Keys of Destiny they prove that money isn t the source of happiness. Even though they have the same theme the two authors get this theme across in two completely different ways. With the story The Monkey s Paw the author uses the death of Herbert (the son of one of main character) to reveal the theme, while in The Keys of Destiny the author uses the keys of destiny to get the same effect. The main reason that the themes are presented differently is because of the craft moves that are being used. For example, in The Monkey s Paw the author W.W. Jacobs used revealing actions and in The Keys of Destiny the author Neil Philip uses symbolism. The main factor in the different ways that the two authors got the theme across was the craft moves. In The Monkey s Paw W.W. Jacobs uses revealing actions to get the main theme across. In the story one of Mr. White s friends tried to throw out a mummified paw of a monkey because he claims it was cursed. Disregarding that it was cursed and can cause consequences if he uses it he asks for money which he would regret later in the story. W.W Jacobs shows this when he writes, I wish for two hundred pounds, said the old man distinctly. While the messages, provided by the literary devices, are similar, the end results are very different. Hawthorn uses metaphors, allusions, and symbolism to show that rejecting imperfection in life to obtain true beauty will lead to death either identically, physically or both; while the Twilight Zone episode uses repetition, idioms, and metaphors to show that the individual should appreciate their own beauty and not rely on society s standards to tell them what is perfect. Smith tells Miss Tyler to say this to herself over and over again. Beauty is a social construct as true beauty weather mentally, as the piece suggests, or physically is based on the perception of the observer. This is idea is reinforced when we learn that Miss Tyler is actually beautiful by the audience s standards but is deemed ugly by the show s standards. While we may see her as perfection the world which she lives in sees her as a grotesque mistake created by nature. Generally, when people look deeply into his text they can find that he is usually sending a message to society about how gender roles and it is common for him to play with them. In these three shows Dollhouse and Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, and Firefly he takes genderroles and moves them around at will. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this is seen so often because the entire show is based around it. You have buffy this strong and witty girl who run s around slaying vampires. As much as Buffy defied him to he still was going no matter what she said so she just backed down. Then when they get there and confront him Xander is basically useless. Inez is arguing that Garcin has always been lying to himself and has been dreaming that he was a hero but, has actually just been self deceiving himself whenever he did something cowardly which she points out by saying he condoned a thousand petty lapses which is referring to perhaps smaller cowardly acts that he has done throughout his life that he refused to accept as indicating he was a coward. By denying the fact that he is a coward and not the hero he attempts to paint himself as it reveals that Garcin lived a life full of inauthenticity since he has never accepted the fact that he is a coward because his actions are that of a coward. Garcin then tries defending himself one last time against Inez as he argues I died to soon. I wasn t allowed time to to do my deeds. (No Exit 43) he is attempting to blame the fact that he died too soon as the reason he was never able to act as the hero he tries to show himself as. Railroads struck many at this time as the seminal achievement of the industrial age, so it is not surprising that public ambivalence extended to the steam locomotive and rail travel as well. It signified to many the destruction of the countryside and a change in the old agrarian based social order. In conjunction with this shift, which was really a shift to a capitalist economy, the steam revolution fundamentally changed the fabric of peoples lives, it changed the way people experienced time and space, it shrunk the boundaries of their world and changed their imagined geographies. This example illustrates how the Gauss Newton method can applied to functions with more that just two variables, and that it can be applied to an equation of any form. In it, will attempt to model temperature data with a sinusoidal function. Below is a chart of the average high temperatures per month of the city of Monroe Louisiana (courtesy of weather.com). Month Temperature (Fahrenheit) January 56 February 60 March 69 April 77 May 84 June 90 July 94 August 94 September 88 October 79 November 68 December 58 As can be seen by the chart, this data appears to take the form of a sinusoidal function. Lennie and Gatsby run from their responsibilities. Both did awful things and it ended up getting them in a very bad situation. In real life running from responsibilities makes people look egotistical or unreliable because they don t want to get themselves in trouble. The Great Gatsby was written by F.Scott Fitzgerald and is about Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby. It tells the story of how James Gatz, a young farm boy turned himself into Jay Gatsby, a rich and lively man. Always chasing after one person, Daisy. Of Mice and Men was written by John Steinbeck and tells people about the struggles of the 1930 s workers in California through George and Lennie. George and Lennie are two workers who always stayed by each other s side through thick and thin even though George didn t want Lennie around. Responsibility is something that everyone has and sometimes people might have to run. Though in most cases people should learn to stay and face their responsibilities. If people ignore a responsibility then it might help resolve the situation and if they don t ignore it any trouble or strife can be prevented. Jay Gatsby, Nick Carraway, Tom, they all have their own set of responsibilities to uphold and keep track of. • 36. The Issue Of Underage Drinking The issue of underage drinking has been constant for many years. The law for the minimum drinking age allows people 21 and older to legally drink alcoholic beverages. It is hard to enforce this law especially on college campuses where lots of underage drinking takes place. Someone that is 18 and older can get into some clubs where they are getting drinks even though they are not supposed to. There is a level of responsibility they needs to be taken when people are drinking. They should know how to handle themselves when alcohol is in their system. Consuming too many alcoholic beverages can cause health issues, behavior issues, and have other harmful effects on a person. The issues that come along with drinking alcohol will affect teenagers and college students more than it would affect someone that is 21 or older. The minimum drinking age law should remain at 21 to keep more young adults from encountering issues associated with drinking. Young adults that are in the age range of 18 20 are more likely to be more reckless than someone who is older and more mature. Adolescents hit the age of 18 and feel like they are grown and finally able to do what they want to do. Some have already started drinking alcohol and will start to drink it more frequently. • 38. The Importance Of Cognitive Development In Willy Wonka And... Childhood, as we all know, is the state or period of being a child; the early period in the development of something (Merriam Webster). The movie Willy Wonka the Chocolate Factory (1971) illustrates five different children with each having different behavior, and they have one thing in common they are the only child in their family. These children are in the middle childhood, primary school age, around age seven or eight. What makes them different from each other is interesting. It allows the viewers to think if their behavior is either result of their experience or how they were raised. How they perceive things and how they behave are part of their cognitive development. The major domain of early childhood development is their cognitive development and the arguable aspects of the Nature Nurture. The term cognition refers to how the mind operates and the study of cognitive development focuses on how the mind thinks and learns during the early years of life (Universal Class, Inc.). The major premise of Piaget s theory is that children go through various stages of cognitive development, all of which are distinct from one another and influenced by both nature and nurture. (Universal Class, Inc.). Nature is what we think of as pre wiring and is influenced by genetic inheritance and other biological factors. Bilbo Baggins repeatedly advises human characteristics to the inanimate objects that are around him, which adds profoundness to Tolkien s tale. Developing a city along the coastline would be extremely different than developing a city in the mountains with reference to reducing traffic within the central business district. Navigating a mountain range can potentially restrict routing options when constructing a highway system, whereas being on the coast give you access to plenty of more public transit options. I believe that long term growth in a cityalong the coastline has the opportunity to be more prosperous and effective in reducing traffic in the central business district than a city in any other geographic location. Most major cities have sport teams for baseball, basketball, football and soccer and a majority of these teams play their games in an arena located within their given central business district.
