Ragtime
History From a Point of Fiction History could be taught and understand in various ways. History
is an important aspect of human society. We live within history and encounter it as part of our
daily lives. It could be through television, school, textbook, and even a work of fiction. One
famous book published in 1975 greatly portrays the early 1900s. The name of this historical
novel, written by E.L. Doctorow, is called Ragtime. This novel addresses the lifestyle, changes,
and conflicts between 1900 to 1917. It s tells a series of story, rather than from just one point of
view. A novel like Ragtime , provides us a better understanding of history. This work of fiction
highlights the important events and gives an in depth view on society.... Show more content on

Ragtime provides numerous account of characters from different social classes. Some example
are, Father of the middle class, Evelyn Nesbit a famous celebrity, and Coalhouse Walker a rich
Africa American man. Events shift from a Jewish family to inventor, like Henry ford. We are
shown how society is portray from their point of view. It s a book that gives insight to explore
other figures. A voice is given to individual of each social groups, which is important to
comprehend history. A more lively force is added to the facts in a way we can relate. Unlike a
historical work of fiction, historical textbooks doesn t provide this human element. Rather than
just knowing what happened, novel explains how the actions impacts each individual in society.
We given an insight to why some characters did what they did and what they experience. With
perspective comes opinions from characters. Emotion is a key value to take in as a portion of
history. For example Houdini develops this strong emotion of obsession for his deceased mother.
The general idea of how rich view the poor and how white feels toward African American were all
express in Ragtime. It displays both side of the spectrum. These are important factors to better

Analysis On Diane Arbus
Diane Arbus is a photographer from New York City her work is from the 1950s and 1960s.
Diane work for a well know fashion magazines like Vogue magazine. Diane has a collection of
photos of children. She has a attraction to taking photos of young children. One picture that she has
called my attention was a little girlthat looks like she getting out of school. Arbus works on the
people first impression. In this picture a girl with a pointy hood and white schoolbag at the curb
in New York City, taken in 1957 by Diane Arbus. This photograph is showing a girl outside of
what it appears to be her school. The little girl is standing, holding her school bag she looks like

1950s Horror Films
Horror films in the 1950s were very different from those in modern times, as 1960 s Psycho is
often credited as the father of modern horror film. 50s horror films would often fit into the
science fiction or thriller genres today. The 50s were known as the Monster Movie decade , as
films often used aliens and monsters to reflect communism or fascism, fears reminiscent of the
era (American Movie Classics Company LLC, 2017). The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
was released in 3 D and used a foam and latex suit to create one of films most famous monsters Gill
Man (see image 10) (American Movie Classics Company LLC, 2017). The suit was very realistic
for its time and is often cited as a landmark for visual effects. GOJIRA: FIND SFX STUFF... Show

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), a black and white film with a low budget of $420,000 is
praised for effectively building suspense with no traditional monsters, no violence, no deaths,
and limited special effects (American Movie Classics Company LLC, 2017). It tells the story of
Dr. Miles Bennell trying to divert the threat of aliens in the form of plant like pods (see image
11), which take over a community by replicating and replacing humans with cold and emotionless
versions (American Movie Classics Company LLC, 2017). Bennell is thought to represent
McCarthy, who fought communism through his interrogations of suspected communists
(American Movie Classics Company LLC, 2017). The pods brainwashing strategy may also be
read as a criticism of the conformist attitude of the 50s (American Movie Classics Company LLC,
2017). The film ends with nobody believing Bennell that the threat is real, and ends with him
yelling to the camera you re next! (American Movie Classics Company LLC, 2017). An epilogue
was later ended where law enforcement listen to Bennell and go to stop the invasion (American

Creon As A Tragic Hero In Antigone By Sophocles
The play, Antigone, written by Sophocles shows the different downfalls of characters. One of
these characters is Creon. Creon does not realize that his pride and stubbornness has interfered his
ability to deal with problems and rule of Thebes properly. By analyzing Creon, one could see that
he is considered a tragic heroin this play. The characteristics a person must have to be a tragic hero
is he has a hamartia, or tragic flaw. More often than not that tragic flaw is excessive pride, or a
hubris. The character then goes through a peripeteia, which is a twist where the character
realizes that things will not turn out the way he expected. Finally, the character has an
anagnorisis, which is their epiphany that makes them realize their hamartia (Cap, Creon as a
Tragic Character in Antigone ). The tragic hero characteristics in Creon are clearly shown when
he speaks with blind prophet, Teiresias. The character interaction between Creon and Teiresias
helps develop Creon as a tragic hero in Antigone. Being the leader of Thebes, Creon wants order
and loyalty to the city. After the death of Eteocles and Polyneices, Creon makes it known that
anyone who acts against the city is an enemy. Creon decides that Polyneices would not receive a
burial because he sees him as a traitor. Not burying the dead is uncommon for many since it went
against religious beliefs. Antigone saw the wrong that was being done, as did other citizens. Creon
says that for quite a while some people in the

Racial Profiling After September 11 Essay
Hessian Abbess says he watched in humiliation as two security officers yanked clothes out of his
carry on bag in plain view of dozens of other travelers at Baltimore/Washington International
Airport. Hessian Abbess, an Arab lawyer going to a convention, was kept at the gate for 30
minutes that October day. He tried to show them a business card that identified him as member of
the National Bar Association, but they paid no attention. I felt threatened. I felt if I protested too
much, I was going to eat airport carpet, Hessian Abbess says.
A US Airways gate agent told him he was detained because he fit a profile designed to identify
travelers who may pose a security risk. But the agent wouldn t be more specific. Hessian Abbess

The model is expected to be an improvement over the written guidelines that airport employees use
now.
Civil rights groups met with Secretary of Transportation to discuss concerns about the profiling
system. Participants included the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the ACLU and the American
Muslim Council. One result: By Dec. 31, signs will be posted at airports telling travelers how to
contact the Department of Transportation if they have a complaint about security. The DOT says it
is investigating 45 complaints about racial and ethnic concerns received this year. We are going to
be working with the airlines on the things we re hearing about, says DOT general counsel Nancy
McFadden. We re going to be vigilant about this.
Profiling is not new. American Airlines began using profiling in 1986, drawing on the expertise of
former El Al employees who developed it for the Israeli airline.
Simply put, profiling is a screening system intended to ferret out travelers who might try to
hijack a plane or smuggle a bomb aboard. It involves asking questions Did you pack your own
bags and Did anyone ask you to carry anything for them are two examples and examining a
passenger s travel habits. A ticket paid for with cash, a one way ticket bought the day of departure,
or lack of a travel history with a particular airline may be red flags that lead to extra scrutiny.
Airline and Federal Aviation Administration officialssay profiling methods do not include

Ohio State Prison Tragedy
Tragedy The Ohio State Penitentiary fire claimed the lives of many in 1930. The fire was set
with the intent of causing a distraction to allow a few to escape the prison walls. This did not
go to plan and instead, the prison was set ablaze when everyone was locked securely in their cells
for the evening. It quickly got out of control and the fire, combined with poor prison conditions,
lead to the death of 322 victims becoming the worst prison fire in the world at the time. From this
tragedy, new fire codes were developed as well as new measures taken in the prison system to
assure such a situation never happen again. The country hasn t faced a tragedy like this since. The

At the time, prison cells were still operated by a turnkey system, which required each cell be
opened individually by a guard with a key (The Ohio Penitentiary). There wasn t any kind of
central unlocking device. Thus, as flames, carbon monoxide, and toxic fumes spread through the
cell block, inmates had nowhere to run, and many died of oxygen deprivation and smoke
inhalation (The Ohio Penitentiary). There is much confusion surrounding what actually went on
during the fire. While there are stories of guards purposely leaving inmates locked in their cells,
there are also stories of heroism displayed by both the inmates and guards alike. Stories of both
sides working together to free as many from the blaze as possible and stories of inmates going
back in time and time again to rescue victims only to succumb to the blaze themselves as well. It
is believed however, that Warden Preston E. Thomas refused to release prisoners until the Ohio
National Guard responded in fear of a riot. By the time the Guard had arrived thirty minutes later,
many had already perished (State Fire Marshal

Riding The City Bus Essay
Getting Around the GSO: Riding the City Bus in Greensboro
Typical, it is 7:31 am Monday morning and I am running late. Knowing it will take
approximately twenty minutes for me to make it to 8:00 am lecture on time, I grab my book bag
hastily lock my apartment door and fly down the slightly stained cement stairs. In less than sixty
seconds, I miraculously made it from the third to the first floor without falling. I congratulate
myself and hop in my old reliable dusty gray, 2011 Toyota. At last, I arrive to campus just in time
to park in the closest lot near the School of Nursing building making it to my first lecture of the
day with ten minutes to spare. This seems like a small and normal morning routine for some, for

Members of the community may need to walk a longer distance if they stay in an area that is not
near a bus route. The neighborhood I stay in has about six bus stops, all within a five to ten
minute walk from my apartment. The bus stops offer little protection from adverse weather or
even a bench to sit on while waiting for the bus. I can image the difficulties a person in poor
health, a person caring for small children, or an older adult may have while waiting on a bus.
According to the GTA website, only the most frequently used bus stops will have a bench and
shelter for those waiting (Greensboro Transit Authority, 2017). While some stops are not the
most accommodating, the bus does have a high tech feature that lowers the bus closer to the
ground for the passengers that need extra assistance, and the front of the bus reserve seats for
handicap passengers. The availability of the GTA buses depends on the time, location, and day
of the week. For instance, the route one, Bridford Place Stop, is available from 5:15 am to 11:58
pm, Monday through Friday (Greensboro Transit Authority, 2017). On Saturdays the bus is
available from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm. Bus routes on Sunday are limited to 6:00 am to 6:00 pm and
only routes 21 to 27 are operational (Greensboro Transit Authority, 2017). The limited weekend
times and routes can be an issue for those who work on the weekends or on night shift. The
affordability of riding the bus will depend on the need and size of a

Stereotypes In The Film Smoke Signals
The film does not rely on any other source other than the Inuk people, and this is why this film
has become important to First Peoples media, because of the film s dedication to authenticity,
revitalizing interest in long standing traditions. With Smoke Signals , Survivance is
demonstrated differently than in Atanarjuat. In Smoke Signals , it was evident that Victor was
influenced by stereotypes of Native Americans that were present in the United States. For
example there is the bus scene where Victor and Thomas traveled to retrieve the ashes of Victor
s father in Arizona, in that scene Victor told Thomas that he did have the image of a Native
American. To Victor, a stoic and warrior like image garnered respect and fear from others. As
the film progressed Victor transform as a character both in how he lived as an individual and
how he saw his Coeur d Alene Heritage. The catalyst for Victor s change of mind was Thomas.
Throughout the film, Thomas acted as a shaman, telling stories about the Coeur d Alene and the
people of the reservation. Thomas shaman like character was a way to remind Victor that he
could never let go of his heritage. The interaction between Thomas and Victor is a representation
of the film as a whole and its message. The Survivance that was present in the film was directed at
every population of First Peoples. Smoke Signals extends its reach to a vast audience and that was
its goal as a film, unlike Atanarjuat s focus on the Inuk people. By

The Tragic Hero Of Euripides Greek Literature
In Greek literature, tragedies tend to have a traditional format: a tragic hero, reversal of fortune
due to a tragic flaw, moment of recognition, and catharsis. In order to be considered a tragic hero,
the character must be born noble, is usually a ruler, and has a tragic flaw which causes peripety.
Typically, the hero s realization of self inflicted doom is what allows a release of emotions. This
raises a question of who the tragic herois in Medea. The tragic hero is thought to be Jason, however
there is an argument that he has no realization that his demise is due to his own flaw which does
not allow catharsis. In Euripides greek play, the audience experiences catharsis as they watch the
secondary characters, Medea, Creusa, and Jason and Medea s sons suffer as a result of Jason s
hamartia; striving for power. These secondary characters experience the true suffering and
therefore they are what allow the reader to reach catharsis. In the beginning of the text, Jason
abandons Medea for another woman. Medea feels an overwhelming sense of heartbreak and
anger because she not only loved Jason but she did everything for him; she went against her
father, ran away from her home, killed her brother, and helped him succeed on his journeys
according to the readings of Edith Hamilton s The Quest of the Golden Fleece. Medea also makes
is clear how she was a loving and providing wife to him and definitely not deserving of
abandonment. And I have loved him and borne him sons;

The Influence Of Reality Television
Reality Television Educates Television has had an impact on our lives, bringing new information
that we probably haven t heard of before. It informs the viewers of lives of people who struggle
with themselves and shows the viewers how to solve them. Reality helps more people than does
harm because it educates on certain people s lives that need some educating on. These shows are
improving young audiences knowledge by spreading positive messages through blunt situations.
For families, the most viewed type of televisionis reality TV. The straight forward situations in the
lives of the stars show a perspective that presents a problem which is then solved by the end of
the episode. When people complain that there are fewer good tv shows for families to watch
together, it s often assumed that TV has become more vulgar and adult... TV has become more
various and fragmented, it s become more specific (James Poniewozik). Television has a certain
group they want to target and that has a message spreading positive awareness. Reality TV teaches
the younger viewers on how to handle life situations and the life of others that they might not
know about. These messages inspire the other party positively and develops more knowledge for
the younger people. The spark of confidence in the younger crowd is mainly from reality TV. Girls

Power In Khaled Hosseini s A Thousand Splendid Suns
One moment she was talking and the next she was on all fours, wide eyed and red faced, trying
to draw a breath.... She howled with pain as he slammed the door shut. A key rattled in the lock
(268). Khaled Hosseini develops these images throughout the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns.
There are several imperative sections where locks and keys are used as a symbol of power. Through
Mariam, Laila, Aziza, and Zalmai, Hosseini reveals the true power Rasheed has over his wives and
children. From a young age Mariam is controlled by Jalil, who has power over both Mariam and
Nana as he keeps them locked in the kolba outside of town. When Mariam walks to Herat to visit

He is in complete control of their lives, and keeps them locked away for three days without food
or water. Later when Rasheed s shop burns down, the family runs low on money for food. Due to
the risk of starving, Laila takes Aziza to the local orphanage where she will be better fed. While
Aziza is at the orphanage, Rasheed often refuses to walk with Laila to visit her, he does this to
take control over her, and tease her that she cannot see her daughter. When Tariq visits Laila,
Zalmai sees Tariq and tells Rasheed about him when Rasheed returns home from work. He took
Zalmai by the elbow. Zalmai meekly let himself be led upstairs.... Mariam saw his feet pounding
the steps as he came down. She saw him pocketing the key, (345). Rasheed proceeds to beat
Mariam and Laila profusely. He was still on top of Laila, his eyes wide and crazy, his hands
wrapped around her neck. Laila s face was turning blue now, her eyes had rolled back (348).
Mariam had gone to the toolshed to get a shovel, when she sees him killing Laila she brings the
shovel up and swings it down on him. He falls off of Laila, but Mariam raises the shovel again
and kills him. After Laila wakes up, Mariam reaches into his pocket and takes the keys. Khaled
Hosseini uses the symbolism of locks and keys throughout A Thousand Splendid Suns to show who
is in control, or has power over others. In the novel Rasheed commonly has control

The Importance Of The Christian Crusades
For centuries, religion has played an important role throughout history by having the power to unite
individuals, towns, kingdoms, or even countries. By giving people something to believe in, it gives
them a purpose in life , because life without purpose would be boring and dull. An example of this
unity was the Christian Crusadesduring the Middle Ages. The Crusades were a chain of Christian
military campaigns against the Turkish Muslims that occupied the holy land, Jerusalem, which
lasted from 1095 to 1291. These Christian crusades all started because of Pope Urban II s call to
unify all Christians from France and the Holy Roman Empire and to retake Jerusalem from the
Muslims.
The main reason that united Western Europe was when the Seljuk Turks invaded the Byzantine
Empire and captured a big portion of the kingdom. During the chaos of the invasion, Alexius
Comnenus, an army general, was able to seize the royal throne and consolidate his power and
control over the last remaining pieces of the empire as the new emperor. As a last attempt, Alexius
called out to Pope Urban II for assistance in retaking the Byzantine Empire and Jerusalem from
Muslim control. When Urban II heard about the Turk s slowly advancing through Europe, he
called for a meeting in the Council of Clermont, which gathered hundreds of clerics, nobles, and
peasants. Urban II was able to conjure thousands of volunteers for his expeditions by claiming that
all sins would be forgiven if they joined, meaning

War Of A Reasonable Patriotism, By George Kateb, And...
A person has absolutely no choice in what country he or she is born in, yet it is commonly assumed
for one to be proud of that meaningless country, then openly criticized when the expectation is not
met. This sense of superiority over other countries, full of human beings with feelings and desires
who are no different than another s, is nothing more than a division of geographical birth places.
Ultimately, patriotismcauses arbitrary detachments between human beings for illogical reasons. It
is fueled by reactionary emotions rather than reason, and although it begins with good intentions, it
can also escalate to catastrophic levels.
To understand the role of patriotism in the modern day, it is helpful to discuss the following
articles: On Patriotism, by George Kateb; In Defense of a Reasonable Patriotism, by William
Galston; and American Patriotism is Unique, by Richard Morris. All three seek to guide readers
toward their own educated opinions regarding the topic, whether that is appreciation or scorn. In
George Kateb s article, he focuses on the philosophical history behind patriotism and refutes
arguments that are in support of it. He likens the love of country to the love one has for his or her
parents, and asserts that this comparison can lead to an exploitable mental confusion (Kateb). Kateb
also covers the ideas of Socrates and Rousseau, who believed that people owe their existence to the
state, and points out the inconsistencies in their theories. He continues the

Israel s Invasion Of Lebanon
Israel s 1982 invasion into Lebanon brought down the phase of Lebanon s political history, which
started with the 75 56 war. The civil war made a mark of trends that has been rising since 1958.
The civil war of 1975 96 had the Lebanese front against the Lebanese s national movement, which
were a reformist coalition and the Palestinian allies. The heart of the issue in this war was the
change in political circumstances in Lebanon. The political aspect and the economy were run by
French mandates. The government split each section s part of Lebanese seats and service
positions. A Maronite Christian would hold the presidency seat. A Sunni Muslim would hold the
premiership and a Shi a Muslim would hold the speakership. By diving the positions up to the
power families it gives deep roots to Lebanon s religious groups. The agreement to share the power
was formally called the National Pact in 1943. These transformations disputed the dynamics of
power between the older ruling families and undercut the authority of the state. An uprising in
Sunni Muslim social forces brought an increased labor movement and a deprived Shi a peasantry,
which stood up against the ruling families.
The Lebanese national movement constituted the new social forces. The goals of this group were
expressed in 1975 to diminish the political monopoly, to destroy the government sections, and to
change the Lebanese state into a democratic one. This program showed the desires of the non

The Role Of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome ( Pcos )
EPIDEMIOLOGY
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder that affects 4% to 12% of
women of childbearing age.1 The proportion of individuals in a population with PCOS depends on
the diagnostic criteria.2 According to the criteria implemented by the European Society for Human
Reproduction and Embryology/American Society for Reproductive Medicine, PCOS is as great as
15% to 20%.2 As stated in The National Institute of Health Office of Disease Prevention Report,
PCOS impacts about 5 million females of reproductive age in United States.3 The identification and
management of the disease is estimated to cost $4 billion annually to the US health care system.3

ETIOLOGY AND PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
PCOS is an oligogenic disorder that has a heritable factor of approximately 70%.3 Both genetic and
environmental factors contribute to the phenotype of the disease.4 The pathophysiology of PCOS
consists of defects in the hypothalamic pituitary axis, secretion of insulin and the function of the
ovary.3 Although, the cause of PCOS is an on going topic of research, it has been linked to insulin
resistance and elevated androgen levels that contribute to hormonal imbalance.4 It is estimated
that 60% 80% of women with PCOS, show insulin resistance and this percentage increases to 95%
of women who are obese.8 Insulin resistance is a cause as well as an exacerbating factor for the
development of PCOS.3 Insulin resistance contributes to metabolic disturbances, obesity and type 2
diabetes, as well as increased androgens, cardiovascular risks and anovulation.1
Insulin aids in regulation of ovarian function and overproduction of insulin causes the ovaries to
produce high amounts of androgens.9 High levels of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH)
stimulate the ovarian thecal cells to produce a greater amount of androgens such as 17
hydroprogesterone, testosterone and progesterone.9 Furthermore, thecal cells contain a higher level
of cytochrome P450 11A, CYP17 and 3 HSD2 genes.9 Increased androgens stimulate visceral

This is another reason how TD cannot affect all users in the same way. SST for example relies
on the consumer feedback of a product to help facilitate a product/service to all types of user.
They often achieve this through BETA versions of software. Software, available to download free
of charge, to receive customer feedback on glitches, faults or any hiccup s the user may have
encountered during their interaction with the software. Technology nowadays, is very much in its
full capacity, is faced with huge competition. Big communication companies are always trying to
out do each other to be the best. Thus, relying of customer feedback to get there. During the times
of TD, such competition did not exist, the market was a monopoly, or in some cases an oligopoly
run by a small number of sellers. No feedback was required as huge competition did not exist. This

U.s. Securities And Exchange Commission
In today s world, debates over wages and compensation have been a growing topic of concern.
Many people feel that they are entitled to earn more than they currently are. The comparison of
executive wages and worker wages has created a backlash from the American public due to the
extreme differences in pay. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission adopted the mandate by
the Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act that requires public companies to
release their chief executive officers pay in relationship to the median compensation of its
employees (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission). Although this regulation does not take
effect until the 2017 fiscal year, many companies have previously made this data free... Show more

In my analysis, I will draw conclusions from scholarly sources and news articles, as well as look
at both sides of the matter from different philosopher s points of view. I will conclude by
recommending what I think should happen and look to the future of both scenarios. In order to
examine the effects of excessive CEO pay on the company s stakeholders, one must define the two
terms. Russell S. Whelton, a former graduate student at Saginaw Valley State University, defines
excessive pay as, compensation that is 20% or greater than the national average CEO salary
(Whelton 15). Therefore, excessive pay would constitute compensation over $13.8 million per year
(Chamberlain). A stakeholder is anyone who is directly affected by the performance of an
organization and thereby, holds a stake in that company (Schermerhorn 73). Some examples of
stakeholders are directors, shareholders, executive officers, and all employees. It is important to
understand why executive officers are compensated at the high levels they are today to determine
the benefits and disadvantages of the argument. The purpose of compensation at any higher level is
to attempt to ensure that management actions result in successful performance for the firm (Ashley
and Yang 369). Possible excessive compensation can be a result

Six Hat Method Of Thinking Is Different From Argument
1. Explain how the Six Hat method of thinking is different from Argument . Also, explain how it
helps organizations to 1) explore a subject, 2) make decisions, and 3) reduce the time taken for the

There is a place for argument, and argument is a useful tool of thinking. But argument is inadequate
as the main tool of thinking. Argument lacks constructive energies, design energies, and creative
energies. Pointing out faults may lead to some improvement but does not construct something new.
Synthesizing both points of view does not produce a stream of new alternatives.

Examples Of Satire In Huckleberry Finn
Huckleberry Finn Satire Essay
In Mark Twain s The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn, there were a lot of examples of satire. The
one that stuck out to me was the idea of family feuds. The feud between the Shepardsons and the
Grangerfords is ironic in the story because they have been fighting for years and don t even know
why they re fighting anymore. This is ironic to me because the Buck wants to fight against the
opposing family extremely bad, but he doesn t know why.
The family feud in Huck Finn is supposed to model another feud that was going on at the same
time. A feud between the Hatfields and McCoys. The feud in the book is supposed to make a joke
of the real feud because of how silly and pointless it was. Well, says Buck, a feud is this ... Show

their guns along, so did Buck, and kept them between their knees or stood them handy against the

Conflict In Little Women, By Louisa May Alcott
Most people view conflict as a bad thing, but authors love to use it to benefit their writing.
Conflict is common in writing as it is essential to plot and often many other aspects. In Louisa
May Alcott s novel, Little Women, the main characters experience types of conflict. In this book,
conflict is used to develop the characters and show their growth. The four main characters, sisters
Amy, Beth, Jo, and Meg, experience Person vs. Self, Person vs. Person, and Person vs. Society
conflictwhich leads them to who they ve become at the end of the novel.
Amy is the youngest of the sisters and she experiences conflict often. Her vanity is a big part of
who she is and a major Person vs Self conflict that she needs to overcome because she cares too
much about how she looks and it negatively affects her quality of life. In the beginning, even as a
preteen, it was a large issue that she complained about often, Amy s vanity begins with her
appearance ... the only thing that bothers her is that her nose isn t quite aristocratic looking
enough (Shmoop). This is especially shown in the story when Alcott states that Amy has tried to
reshape her nose by sleeping with a clothespin on it, however, by the end, she accepts how she
looks and doesn t obsess over her appearance thanks to Laurie s love. Before Laurie and Amy fell
in love, they had quite a large confrontation. When Laurie visits Amy abroad, she yells at him for

Selma Persuasive Speech
The strength of a speech does not come from the strength of a person s voice, but the strength
comes from the passion of the speaker towards the subject. The film Selma directed by Ana
DuVernay, portrays the story of Martin Luther King Jr. s struggle to achieve voting rights in the
south for African Americans. In the film, two speeches that King spoke caught my attention,
they are Give Us the Vote and Who Murdered Jimmie Lee Jackson? . After analyzing both
speeches, I have found that both are very similar as they both are relatable by directing his
speeches towards his audience emotions, how he persuades his audience to fight for their rights
through protest, and how he is able to express his own beliefs in his speeches to further support
his argument favoring voting rights. One of the first speeches that King does in the beginning of
the film is Give Us the Vote which focuses on him telling his audience that they need to fight for
their rights. In his speech, King evokes the audience s emotions by describing how children are
also being targeted for hate crimes and he introduces this by saying, We see children become
victims of one of the most vicious crimes...within the halls of their own church! . This is important
because he uses children to connect to the audience s emotions, allowing them to understand that if
they do not fight for their rights their children will also become victims. Similarly, in his other
speech, Who Murdered Jimmie Lee Jackson? , King talks

Positive job responsible parties employees will influence their level of ethical job performance,

drivers are unsupervised and interact directly with clientele, it is of paramount importance that
drivers display professional attitudes and exemplary customer service. To aid better attitude and
exemplary job performance, it is recommended that a philosophy of autonomy and free will is
incorporated into the job narrative for drivers and dispatch. Studies show that when employees
leave that there is an element of free will in their work, they perform better and demonstrate better
workplace behavior (Stillman, 2010). Specifically, research has concluded that belief in free will
facilitates control behavior and buffers against impulsive action, which, in turn, translates to better
job performance (Stillman, 2010, p. 48). Therefore, by incorporating a philosophy of autonomy into
employee expectations and job analysis, Landslide Limousines will increase the positive
performance of employees.

Successful Class Assessment
Within a high school, there is a great divide. It separates the successful students, those were doing
well and all of their classes, from the unsuccessful students, those who are barely passing their
classes or struggling to get passing. The qualities that the successful students have that the
unsuccessful students have not yet mastered are the ability to be attentive in class, the initiative to
organize all aspects of their school life, and the intuition needed to ask the right questions. These
are the bricks in the foundation of one s achievement. To elaborate, the first step to getting good

the purpose of asking meaningful questions is to insure that a subject is understood. Asking
questions helps to avoid later confusion. I can relate personally to this attribute because, ask anyone
who knows anything about me, and they will inform you of how inquisitive I am. I ask questions
often to ensure that there are no gray areas. For example, I was once given an assignment in an
English class and I felt the instructions weren t clear so I asked for a rubric. Turns out, my
instructor had forgotten to hand out the rubric and she also confessed that it would have been 10
times more difficult to complete the assignment without this handout. That is one out of many
times where asking questions was useful. In addition to gathering information, asking questions will
encourage free communication between the student and the teacher. The fact that a student is asking
questions shows that they re humble enough to admit that they don t know everything, and teachers
admire this. It also shows the craving for knowledge which teachers always love to see in their

The action of vampirism is trying to exploit another, and usually the exploited one is female. In
The Princess Bride, William Goldman sets up many vampires to try and belittle the main character
Buttercup. Vizzini, Prince Humperdinck, and her father to name a few. They each play a role in
her adventure of life, but Prince Humperdinck is the largest vampire of the book. On their first
meeting, he greets her I am your Prince and you will marry me Humperdinck said (Goldman.
81). Straight from the begging he subjects her to something she may not want simply because he
is the prince. He doesn t even say hello to her, which is a true sign of vampirism. Almost forcing
someone against their will to do something, more than likely sucking the life from her. He goes
on to tell her that Refusal means death (Goldman, 81). After his first attempt, she refuses, so he
decides to threaten her life. Foster, in his book depicts a vampire as An older figure representing
corrupt, outworn values (Foster,19). Goldman makes Humperdinck a prime example of a
vampire, he demands marriage, he keeps a zoo called The Zoo of Death full of animals from
around the world that are at his disposal to kill, he lies, cheats, and goes back on his word multiple
times throughout the book, so that he can have buttercup at his disposal. Don t forget he only likes
her because she is the most beautiful girl in Florin.

Worker B5-8-9-2 Reporting
A siren resonated around the blinding white walls of the moulded plastic room. The deafening
noise, like a brash crashing of cymbals, was followed by an impassive metallic voice. It roared
through the sonic speakers. Worker B3 8 2 4, you have received a promotion. She straightened
in her chair and looked fearfully across the desk at her co worker. He was frozen, hands poised
over the keyboard, transfixed by her shrieks as she was dragged away from the cubicle by
enforcers. The door shut with a thud. The only sound now was a hum of electricity that
emanated from the two monitors on the bare plastic desk. It filled the vacuum that had been left
behind by yet another of the disappeared. The worker let the air trapped in his lungs escape in a
sigh. He arched his lower back; crossed and uncrossed his legs, and reached for the pair of worn
weathered headphones on top of the monitor. The response was instant. An impassive metallic
voice directed the worker through his next task. Worker B5 8 9 2, proceed to Section 231 of the
Worker s Manual. The automated system droned. Delete but and replace with and . Thank you for
your cooperation. At that moment the new replacement shuffled into the featureless cubicle and
slumped down opposite him. He fitted his own headphones and began keying meaningless changes
into the system. The new, clean shaven recruit, garbed in the dark grey overalls of the company,
appeared oblivious to the world around him. He lay hunched over the

Analytics In Basketball
There is a field in the sport of basketball that is growing at a rapid pace. That field is called
analytics. Nearly every team in the NBA now has an analytics department. However, it is important
to fully understand analytics before applying that knowledge to the sport of basketball. Analytics is
the discovery and communication of meaningful patterns in data (Stolbunov 1). Analytics being
used in sports is simply called sports analytics. Even though analytics has its flaws, it has had a
major impact on team building in basketball using statisticslike player efficiency ratingand effective
field goal percentage. There are many important statistics used in analytics, but a couple are used to
very great effect. One of the most important statistics... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In baseball, the book Moneyball revolutionized the way that the whole sport looked at analytics.
Basketball has a comparable situation. The book Basketball on Paper dives into the numbers
behind the sport (Haefner 10). In this book, author Dean Oliver states there are four main
statistics to tell which team will win, and also states of how much importance these statistics
are. He says that a team s shooting is forty percent of winning, turnovers are twenty five percent,
rebounding is twenty percent, and and free throws are fifteen percent (Haefner 11). One of the
fathers of analytics in basketball claims that shooting is far and away the most important
statistic in the game. However, in order to know how a team is performing in this category, the
team must be compared against other teams. Doing this is extremely easy. If comparing two
teams playing each other, the opposing team s effective field goal percentage is simply
subtracted from the team being observed (Haefner 15). A golden example of the utility of
effective field goal percentage is the Golden State Warriors. This team has broken records for
three pointers made, and recently won seventy three games in a single season. The Warriors
have an advantage on almost every other team in the NBA because of the vast amount of three
pointers that they take (Dizikes 2). The ease with which effective field goal percentage can be
used and its direct correlation to which team wins the game makes it possibly the most useful
statistic in the game of basketball. However, while shooting does have a direct correlation for
team performance, it does not always have a major impact on how a single player

Comparing Prometheus And Atlas
Many a few have heard of Atlas, the almighty titan. After the gods of olympus, led by Zeus
defeated the titans, Atlas was charged to eternally bear the weight of the world on his shoulders.
To be a bit more specific, Atlas was mandated to keep apart the heavens and the Earth. This was the
predicament of a number of titans at the hands of Zeusand the other Gods. For example, Prometheus
, creator of the Earth is tortured eternally. Every Day, a murderous phoenix attacks him and steals
his liver, and everyday, his liver grows back so that he suffers the pain each and every day. Well,
both Prometheus and Atlas helped our beloved heroHercules with his 12 labors. His eleventh labor
was to retrieve some golden apples from the Garden of Hesperides. However, this garden was
protected by a powerful fire breathing... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hercules was well aware of this and tried to find help. He was told by a group of Nymphs to find
Prometheus. They said that if Hercules were to kill the Eagle that returned everyday to torture
Prometheus, he would in return tell him how to complete his task. So, Hercules set off to find
Prometheus. After slaying the murderous bird, Hercules was informed that Atlas was his best
chance at procuring some golden apples. So Hercules again set off in search of Atlas. Hercules
struck a deal with Atlas. It basically said that Hercules would bear the burden of Atlas for a short
while, meanwhile Atlas would enter the garden and get the apples for Hercules. After Atlas had
successfully made it back with the apples, he told Hercules that he would just take them to
Eurystheus himself. Hercules slyly agreed, but asked if Atlas could hold it long enough for
Hercules to place some padding on his shoulders to help with the load. But Hercules took the
apples and ran without looking back and returned to Eurystheus with the apples prepared to tackle
his final labor before he was accepted into Olympus as a God. And Atlas was left to bear the weight
of the heavens forever in

Greed In Tom Walker And The Devil
Greed is a term that is thrown around a lot in today s society but what is the true meaning of
greed? According to the dictionary greed is intense and selfish desire for something, especially
wealth, power, or food (dictionary). Everyone has their own definition of greed, mine is anyone
or anything that puts themselves before others needs. In the short story Tom walker and the
devil by irving, the article titled Greed by Jessica Hawthorn, and the article what is greed by
Tomas Baus these authors show that greed is defined as taking your personal wants before others.
Greed is usually fueled by jealousy. In the short story the devil and tom walker the author uses
diction to relay that greed is fueled by jealousy, after hearing about the skull, tom s wife decided to
go against toms warning and go take the money and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The article states more of something than is needed (Jessica 1). When a person wants more than
he or she needs, that is greed. There is no reason to have more of something that isn t essential to
life. Somethings are nice to have a lot of but, it shouldn t make you forget about others and
become selfish. Many people only take what they need which is the opposite of greed, they have
others in mind instead of themselves. The problem with the term greed is, who is to say when
someone has enough of something? The article states Who decides not only what is needed, but
when someone has more than enough (Jessica1). There is no exact amount of something that a
person possesses that is considered greedy. Because of this everyone in the world has different
definitions of the word. People in today s society often argue about what is considered being
greedy. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but when it s started to hurt others, that is where
the line is

  • 4. 1950s Horror Films Horror films in the 1950s were very different from those in modern times, as 1960 s Psycho is often credited as the father of modern horror film. 50s horror films would often fit into the science fiction or thriller genres today. The 50s were known as the Monster Movie decade , as films often used aliens and monsters to reflect communism or fascism, fears reminiscent of the era (American Movie Classics Company LLC, 2017). The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) was released in 3 D and used a foam and latex suit to create one of films most famous monsters Gill Man (see image 10) (American Movie Classics Company LLC, 2017). Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), a black and white film with a low budget of $420,000 is praised for effectively building suspense with no traditional monsters, no violence, no deaths, and limited special effects (American Movie Classics Company LLC, 2017). It tells the story of Dr. Miles Bennell trying to divert the threat of aliens in the form of plant like pods (see image 11), which take over a community by replicating and replacing humans with cold and emotionless versions (American Movie Classics Company LLC, 2017). Bennell is thought to represent McCarthy, who fought communism through his interrogations of suspected communists (American Movie Classics Company LLC, 2017). The pods brainwashing strategy may also be read as a criticism of the conformist attitude of the 50s (American Movie Classics Company LLC, 2017). The film ends with nobody believing Bennell that the threat is real, and ends with him yelling to the camera you re next! (American Movie Classics Company LLC, 2017). • 5. Creon As A Tragic Hero In Antigone By Sophocles The play, Antigone, written by Sophocles shows the different downfalls of characters. One of these characters is Creon. Creon does not realize that his pride and stubbornness has interfered his ability to deal with problems and rule of Thebes properly. By analyzing Creon, one could see that he is considered a tragic heroin this play. The characteristics a person must have to be a tragic hero is he has a hamartia, or tragic flaw. More often than not that tragic flaw is excessive pride, or a hubris. The character then goes through a peripeteia, which is a twist where the character realizes that things will not turn out the way he expected. Finally, the character has an anagnorisis, which is their epiphany that makes them realize their hamartia (Cap, Creon as a Tragic Character in Antigone ). The tragic hero characteristics in Creon are clearly shown when he speaks with blind prophet, Teiresias. The character interaction between Creon and Teiresias helps develop Creon as a tragic hero in Antigone. Being the leader of Thebes, Creon wants order and loyalty to the city. After the death of Eteocles and Polyneices, Creon makes it known that anyone who acts against the city is an enemy. Creon decides that Polyneices would not receive a burial because he sees him as a traitor. Not burying the dead is uncommon for many since it went against religious beliefs. Antigone saw the wrong that was being done, as did other citizens. Creon says that for quite a while some people in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Racial Profiling After September 11 Essay Hessian Abbess says he watched in humiliation as two security officers yanked clothes out of his carry on bag in plain view of dozens of other travelers at Baltimore/Washington International Airport. Hessian Abbess, an Arab lawyer going to a convention, was kept at the gate for 30 minutes that October day. He tried to show them a business card that identified him as member of the National Bar Association, but they paid no attention. I felt threatened. I felt if I protested too much, I was going to eat airport carpet, Hessian Abbess says. Civil rights groups met with Secretary of Transportation to discuss concerns about the profiling system. Participants included the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the ACLU and the American Muslim Council. One result: By Dec. 31, signs will be posted at airports telling travelers how to contact the Department of Transportation if they have a complaint about security. The DOT says it is investigating 45 complaints about racial and ethnic concerns received this year. We are going to be working with the airlines on the things we re hearing about, says DOT general counsel Nancy McFadden. We re going to be vigilant about this. Profiling is not new. American Airlines began using profiling in 1986, drawing on the expertise of former El Al employees who developed it for the Israeli airline. Simply put, profiling is a screening system intended to ferret out travelers who might try to hijack a plane or smuggle a bomb aboard. It involves asking questions Did you pack your own bags and Did anyone ask you to carry anything for them are two examples and examining a passenger s travel habits. • 7. Ohio State Prison Tragedy Tragedy The Ohio State Penitentiary fire claimed the lives of many in 1930. The fire was set with the intent of causing a distraction to allow a few to escape the prison walls. This did not go to plan and instead, the prison was set ablaze when everyone was locked securely in their cells for the evening. It quickly got out of control and the fire, combined with poor prison conditions, lead to the death of 322 victims becoming the worst prison fire in the world at the time. From this tragedy, new fire codes were developed as well as new measures taken in the prison system to assure such a situation never happen again. The country hasn t faced a tragedy like this since. At the time, prison cells were still operated by a turnkey system, which required each cell be opened individually by a guard with a key (The Ohio Penitentiary). There wasn t any kind of central unlocking device. Thus, as flames, carbon monoxide, and toxic fumes spread through the cell block, inmates had nowhere to run, and many died of oxygen deprivation and smoke inhalation (The Ohio Penitentiary). There is much confusion surrounding what actually went on during the fire. While there are stories of guards purposely leaving inmates locked in their cells, there are also stories of heroism displayed by both the inmates and guards alike. Stories of both sides working together to free as many from the blaze as possible and stories of inmates going back in time and time again to rescue victims only to succumb to the blaze themselves as well. It is believed however, that Warden Preston E. Thomas refused to release prisoners until the Ohio National Guard responded in fear of a riot. Members of the community may need to walk a longer distance if they stay in an area that is not near a bus route. The neighborhood I stay in has about six bus stops, all within a five to ten minute walk from my apartment. The bus stops offer little protection from adverse weather or even a bench to sit on while waiting for the bus. I can image the difficulties a person in poor health, a person caring for small children, or an older adult may have while waiting on a bus. According to the GTA website, only the most frequently used bus stops will have a bench and shelter for those waiting (Greensboro Transit Authority, 2017). While some stops are not the most accommodating, the bus does have a high tech feature that lowers the bus closer to the ground for the passengers that need extra assistance, and the front of the bus reserve seats for handicap passengers. The availability of the GTA buses depends on the time, location, and day of the week. For instance, the route one, Bridford Place Stop, is available from 5:15 am to 11:58 pm, Monday through Friday (Greensboro Transit Authority, 2017). On Saturdays the bus is available from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm. Bus routes on Sunday are limited to 6:00 am to 6:00 pm and only routes 21 to 27 are operational (Greensboro Transit Authority, 2017). • 9. Stereotypes In The Film Smoke Signals The film does not rely on any other source other than the Inuk people, and this is why this film has become important to First Peoples media, because of the film s dedication to authenticity, revitalizing interest in long standing traditions. With Smoke Signals , Survivance is demonstrated differently than in Atanarjuat. In Smoke Signals , it was evident that Victor was influenced by stereotypes of Native Americans that were present in the United States. For example there is the bus scene where Victor and Thomas traveled to retrieve the ashes of Victor s father in Arizona, in that scene Victor told Thomas that he did have the image of a Native American. To Victor, a stoic and warrior like image garnered respect and fear from others. As the film progressed Victor transform as a character both in how he lived as an individual and how he saw his Coeur d Alene Heritage. The catalyst for Victor s change of mind was Thomas. Throughout the film, Thomas acted as a shaman, telling stories about the Coeur d Alene and the people of the reservation. Thomas shaman like character was a way to remind Victor that he could never let go of his heritage. The interaction between Thomas and Victor is a representation of the film as a whole and its message. The Survivance that was present in the film was directed at every population of First Peoples. Smoke Signals extends its reach to a vast audience and that was its goal as a film, unlike Atanarjuat s focus on the Inuk people. By ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. The Tragic Hero Of Euripides Greek Literature In Greek literature, tragedies tend to have a traditional format: a tragic hero, reversal of fortune due to a tragic flaw, moment of recognition, and catharsis. In order to be considered a tragic hero, the character must be born noble, is usually a ruler, and has a tragic flaw which causes peripety. Typically, the hero s realization of self inflicted doom is what allows a release of emotions. This raises a question of who the tragic herois in Medea. The tragic hero is thought to be Jason, however there is an argument that he has no realization that his demise is due to his own flaw which does not allow catharsis. In Euripides greek play, the audience experiences catharsis as they watch the secondary characters, Medea, Creusa, and Jason and Medea s sons suffer as a result of Jason s hamartia; striving for power. These secondary characters experience the true suffering and therefore they are what allow the reader to reach catharsis. In the beginning of the text, Jason abandons Medea for another woman. Medea feels an overwhelming sense of heartbreak and anger because she not only loved Jason but she did everything for him; she went against her father, ran away from her home, killed her brother, and helped him succeed on his journeys according to the readings of Edith Hamilton s The Quest of the Golden Fleece. Medea also makes is clear how she was a loving and providing wife to him and definitely not deserving of abandonment. And I have loved him and borne him sons; ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are several imperative sections where locks and keys are used as a symbol of power. Through Mariam, Laila, Aziza, and Zalmai, Hosseini reveals the true power Rasheed has over his wives and children. While Aziza is at the orphanage, Rasheed often refuses to walk with Laila to visit her, he does this to take control over her, and tease her that she cannot see her daughter. • 13. The Importance Of The Christian Crusades For centuries, religion has played an important role throughout history by having the power to unite individuals, towns, kingdoms, or even countries. By giving people something to believe in, it gives them a purpose in life , because life without purpose would be boring and dull. An example of this unity was the Christian Crusadesduring the Middle Ages. The Crusades were a chain of Christian military campaigns against the Turkish Muslims that occupied the holy land, Jerusalem, which lasted from 1095 to 1291. These Christian crusades all started because of Pope Urban II s call to unify all Christians from France and the Holy Roman Empire and to retake Jerusalem from the Muslims. The main reason that united Western Europe was when the Seljuk Turks invaded the Byzantine Empire and captured a big portion of the kingdom. During the chaos of the invasion, Alexius Comnenus, an army general, was able to seize the royal throne and consolidate his power and control over the last remaining pieces of the empire as the new emperor. As a last attempt, Alexius called out to Pope Urban II for assistance in retaking the Byzantine Empire and Jerusalem from Muslim control. When Urban II heard about the Turk s slowly advancing through Europe, he called for a meeting in the Council of Clermont, which gathered hundreds of clerics, nobles, and peasants. Urban II was able to conjure thousands of volunteers for his expeditions by claiming that all sins would be forgiven if they joined, meaning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. War Of A Reasonable Patriotism, By George Kateb, And... A person has absolutely no choice in what country he or she is born in, yet it is commonly assumed for one to be proud of that meaningless country, then openly criticized when the expectation is not met. This sense of superiority over other countries, full of human beings with feelings and desires who are no different than another s, is nothing more than a division of geographical birth places. Ultimately, patriotismcauses arbitrary detachments between human beings for illogical reasons. It is fueled by reactionary emotions rather than reason, and although it begins with good intentions, it can also escalate to catastrophic levels. To understand the role of patriotism in the modern day, it is helpful to discuss the following articles: On Patriotism, by George Kateb; In Defense of a Reasonable Patriotism, by William Galston; and American Patriotism is Unique, by Richard Morris. All three seek to guide readers toward their own educated opinions regarding the topic, whether that is appreciation or scorn. In George Kateb s article, he focuses on the philosophical history behind patriotism and refutes arguments that are in support of it. He likens the love of country to the love one has for his or her parents, and asserts that this comparison can lead to an exploitable mental confusion (Kateb). Kateb also covers the ideas of Socrates and Rousseau, who believed that people owe their existence to the state, and points out the inconsistencies in their theories. He continues the ... The civil war made a mark of trends that has been rising since 1958. The civil war of 1975 96 had the Lebanese front against the Lebanese s national movement, which were a reformist coalition and the Palestinian allies. The heart of the issue in this war was the change in political circumstances in Lebanon. The political aspect and the economy were run by French mandates. The government split each section s part of Lebanese seats and service positions. A Maronite Christian would hold the presidency seat. A Sunni Muslim would hold the premiership and a Shi a Muslim would hold the speakership. By diving the positions up to the power families it gives deep roots to Lebanon s religious groups. The agreement to share the power was formally called the National Pact in 1943. These transformations disputed the dynamics of power between the older ruling families and undercut the authority of the state. An uprising in Sunni Muslim social forces brought an increased labor movement and a deprived Shi a peasantry, which stood up against the ruling families. The Lebanese national movement constituted the new social forces. The goals of this group were expressed in 1975 to diminish the political monopoly, to destroy the government sections, and to change the Lebanese state into a democratic one. The film Selma directed by Ana DuVernay, portrays the story of Martin Luther King Jr. s struggle to achieve voting rights in the south for African Americans. In the film, two speeches that King spoke caught my attention, they are Give Us the Vote and Who Murdered Jimmie Lee Jackson? . After analyzing both speeches, I have found that both are very similar as they both are relatable by directing his speeches towards his audience emotions, how he persuades his audience to fight for their rights through protest, and how he is able to express his own beliefs in his speeches to further support his argument favoring voting rights. One of the first speeches that King does in the beginning of the film is Give Us the Vote which focuses on him telling his audience that they need to fight for their rights. In his speech, King evokes the audience s emotions by describing how children are also being targeted for hate crimes and he introduces this by saying, We see children become victims of one of the most vicious crimes...within the halls of their own church! . A Case Of A Correctional Officer Essay They went further on to inform us that only a pretrial would be taking place, since a new information being submitted by a correctional officer was to be debated as to whether it was substantial enough to be admitted as evidence. Moreover, because we arrived earlier than the original time for the Riker s island pretrial, we witnessed a brief trail which to me wasn t informative because very little could be heard from what the judge, prosecutorand a different defense attorney were discussing. Since I could retain very little information from that trial, I took a quick glance at the interior structure of the court room. To accurately present the surroundings of the court room without interrupting the ongoing trail, I imagined myself standing at the door we entered through to the room. With my back facing the door, I pictured the room as having seats arranged much like how churches have long chairs that could occupy a number of individuals, a long aisle that separated the seating into sections of right and left with the male and female prosecutors of the cases chairs and computers in front of the seats on my right and the defense attorneys with their clients on the left. The seating sections for observers had ropes in front of them, separating them from where the prosecutors, lawyers, defendants, judge, security and the juror were seated. Both the right and left seats had the first roll of seats cleared by the security with have no sitting on them, a phenomenon that I still ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. Analytics In Basketball There is a field in the sport of basketball that is growing at a rapid pace. That field is called analytics. Nearly every team in the NBA now has an analytics department. However, it is important to fully understand analytics before applying that knowledge to the sport of basketball. Analytics is the discovery and communication of meaningful patterns in data (Stolbunov 1). Analytics being used in sports is simply called sports analytics. Even though analytics has its flaws, it has had a major impact on team building in basketball using statisticslike player efficiency ratingand effective field goal percentage. In baseball, the book Moneyball revolutionized the way that the whole sport looked at analytics. Basketball has a comparable situation. The book Basketball on Paper dives into the numbers behind the sport (Haefner 10). In this book, author Dean Oliver states there are four main statistics to tell which team will win, and also states of how much importance these statistics are. He says that a team s shooting is forty percent of winning, turnovers are twenty five percent, rebounding is twenty percent, and and free throws are fifteen percent (Haefner 11). One of the fathers of analytics in basketball claims that shooting is far and away the most important statistic in the game. However, in order to know how a team is performing in this category, the team must be compared against other teams. Doing this is extremely easy. If comparing two teams playing each other, the opposing team s effective field goal percentage is simply subtracted from the team being observed (Haefner 15). A golden example of the utility of effective field goal percentage is the Golden State Warriors. This team has broken records for three pointers made, and recently won seventy three games in a single season. The Warriors have an advantage on almost every other team in the NBA because of the vast amount of three pointers that they take (Dizikes 2). The ease with which effective field goal percentage can be used and its direct correlation to which team wins the game makes it possibly the most useful statistic in the game of basketball. However, while shooting does have a direct correlation for team performance, it does not always have a major impact on how a single player ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
