What Does The Light Symbolize In The Black Cat
Authors who write literature often put their feelings into their work which can cause us to connect
with how the authors feel sometimes. Authors as well have some sort of past so that often without
thinking write something that can be a symbolize something from their past, so if they had a bad
past then their literature may be tragic or gothic. For example The Black Cat written by Edgar
Allan Poeuses a light and dark theme which can go along with the gothic theme. Light and Dark
symbolize how dark Poe s childhood was since he writes about death, murder, and other gory
storylines. Poe uses light and dark to show the different aspects of the narrators and how guilt can
consume a person. One example of the thesis is the black cat who was in the wall with the corpse
the whole time. The quote for this found on page eight goes like this I had walled the monster up
within the wall so the narrator never noticed when the cat slipped into the tomb with the corpse and
was in the tomb for days. This quote supports the thesis... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The quote for the light part of my thesis is I love the old man this represents the light part
because he loved him he cared for the old man but couldn t hold back his fears and madness. The
dark quote is Villans! I shrieked, dissemble no more! I admit the deed! tear up the planks here,
here! It is the beating of his hideous heart this means that the guilt has consumed him but before
that he went through so much madness because of the vulture eye that it caused the narrator to
murder the old man even tho he loved the old man. The eye I believe is like a vulture s eye
because I believe that the old man had cataracts causing to have a vulture like eye because vultures
usually have a eye with cataracts. So in conclusion The Tell Tale Heart does represent my

Parenting In The Film I Am Sam
The film I am Sam is a compelling film depicting Sam who has the mental capacity of a 7 year
old. Sam has a daughter with a homeless woman, the day their daughter is born she ababons
them. When Lucy reaches age 7 Sam s limitations create a predicament. Lucy s learning capacity
exceeds Sam s. Consequently, Lucy begins to hold herself back and refrain from learning
because she is hesitant to become more intelligent than her father. Sam cannot answer questions
that his daughter Lucy asks him, she begins to read better than him and ultimately her knowledge
surpasses her fathers. Moreover, A prostitute attempts to solicitude Sam and he is placed under
arrest. The judge orders Sam to solely visit Lucy two times per week because of soliciting, lack
of control of emotions, and endangering other children. Moreover, the judge believes he has
mental delays preventing him from proper parenting. Annie, Sam s neighbor and Lucy s
godmother helps Sam immensely when Lucy is born. She babysits and alleviates some of Sam s
anxieties of parenting. Sam cannot comprehend some aspects of life for example, Sam and his

In the process of the case, Rita learns about love and how to become a better parent by watching
Sam. Sam is treated poorly by several characters in the film including the prosecutor, waitresses,

because he has a disability. An additional character, Dr. Blake s is a graduate of medical school.
She testifies for Sam because her mother had the mental capacity of a 9 year old. Dr. Blake said
her mother had great instincts, taught her patience and compassion. When Annie testified she
stated she never questioned Sam s ability to be a father, Lucy is strong and displays empathy for all
people. Additionally, she says people believe Lucy is smart despite of Sam but it is truly because of

Group Dynamics In The Devil Wears Prada
All companies have slight to significant culture that effect various dynamics among individual s
interactions. Those interaction may involve nonverbal or verbal communications. The
communication between individual s can create both a positive or negative result, small to large
groups. A platform is formed from a diverse team generating potential for creativity and innovation.
The organization could have expediential advantage to build continuous success from collaboration.
For the structure, it would allow the necessary flexibility to create good and/or unhealthy practices,
in which, could result in the toxic high turnover and stressful environment or enriching environment
for individuals to thrive an organization. The managementand leadership has vital role in the
creation of these customs thus creating a culture allotting successful atmosphere. In fact, some
organizations thrive in a traditional culture while other usually depends on several factors such as
industry, competition, and location. In the movie The Devil Wears Prada, there are plenty of
examples that demonstrate good and bad practices. What I will be mainly focused on is the bad.
Those practices result in various outcomes from communicationstyles, downward and upward, and
other specific behaviors. I will be reviewing few organizational behaviors dynamics that will be
cited examples found throughout the movie. Some may see the film as a successful story of Andy

Traumatic Brain Disorder (TBI)
1.5 million people in the United State of America have a traumatic brain disorder (TBI). These
disorders have symptoms of memory dysfunction, depression and anxiety; Dr. Byrnes and her team
at the Uniformed Services University have examined mouse models to find the cellular mechanisms
for these symptoms. When the brainexperiences a traumatic injury, several cellular level events
happen quickly. First, there is an increase in supporting cell membrane permeability which leads to
a rise in non specific ion influx, followed by a rapid increase in glucose uptake. This increased
glucose uptake results in increased in energy generation in an effort to correct the membrane
permeability dysfunction.
The major route neurons use to increase their glucose

Mama s Fear In Like Water For Chocolate
Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that needs our
love.
In Like Water for Chocolate Tita had a fear towards her mother. Many characters in the book found
Mama frightening or intimidating. The family was forced into a fearful obedience such as when
the La Garza family is making their Christmas rolls they are not allowed to stop until Mama
Elena stated That s it for today. once that statement is said no one dares question her or says
anything else they all begin cleaning up. (ch 1;10) Mama Elena unconsciously instilled fear into
Pedro because when he gave roses to Tita in a way to sooth her over the death of Nacha. But
Rosaura, Tita s older sister and wife of Pedro, say this she burst into tears causing Mama Elena to
give him a look that sent Tita and Pedro walking away.(ch 3;48) Mama Elena hold over people
around her was based of the instinct of fear.
Mama Elena stirred fear even in strangers. Rebel soldiers came by her house asking for her to
volunteer her services to them. Mama allowed them to go in the corn crib and the stable taking
anything they wished, but when the rebels found out it was close to being bare they tried to go
inside and she threatened them making them back off. This shows ... Show more content on

Alternate Ending For Mordred
If you repent your crimes, I will spare your life. Kara stared at the king as he finished his speech,
amazed she d been given a final chance at a reprieve rather than being led straight to the gallows.
She knew then that Mordred was right about this man... saddened by the realization that Arthur had
a truly merciful heart, quite unlike the monster Morgana had painted him out to be. That made it
so much more painful to speak the words... poisonous beliefs she no longer had the ability to
contradict no matter how hard she tried. Her mouth opened against her will, Morgana s thoughts

Panama History and Culture Essay
Panama History and Culture The culture and political structures of Panama as we know it today has
evolved from an incredibly diverse and interesting history. Geographically, Panama lies on an
isthmus, a strip of land that essentially connects the greater landmasses of North and South
America. It is believed that volcanic activity in the late Pliocene era closed the former Central
American Seaway that had separated the two continents. The climatic implications of this landform
are incredible, allowing for the redistribution of oceanic currents and the formation of the Gulf
Stream of the Atlantic of today. The native populations of Panama include the Chibchan, Chocoan,
and Cueva communities, and like... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, this union too would collapse in 1840, when separatist Panamanian forces led by a group
of rebels called the Sociedad de Amigos del PaГs began to resist the governance of BogotГЎ.
Panama is geographically placed at extreme economic advantage due to its close and centralized
proximity to North and South America and easy accessibility by sea, yet the Columbian Republic
kept this advantage at bay for political purposes, creating a situation in which Panama was
essentially left at an economic standstill. This tactic created a situation which made Panama s
economic advancement nearly impossible. This coupled with requests for large sums of money
from the Panamanian treasury to fund the war in Pasto, despite unquestionably trying times, led to
the revolutionary upheaval. In October of 1840, the new Governor Carlos de Icaza refused to
comply to yet another request from BogotГЎ for more funds from Panama on the grounds that the
Panamanian treasury was empty. Four weeks after this announcement, on November 18, 1840,
Panama declared its independence (MГ©ndez). In 1903, the United states under President
Theodore Roosevelt signed a treaty with Panama which gave over the rights to build and control
the passage through what we now know as the famous Panama Canal, with the purpose of creating
a politically, economically and geographically significant waterway that would allow for the travel
of ships from the

Effective Leadership Interview Assignment
For this assignment, I interviewed Katelynn Foust. During this interview, it helped me learn more
about leadership and what to expect as an RA. I learned some very valuable information that will
help me in the future as a leader. Before the interview, I had concerns and preconceptions. Katelynn
also informed me on some information that I found to be surprising and she was very informative.
I learned that to make others feel confident that it will be easier if you get to know that person and
pay attention to certain details about them. This is helpful because when working with residents if
they need some motivationor cheering up then by implementing what they are good at will help
them. Being a leader will have its ups and downs but with... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

I thought there was not as much paper work that went with being an RA. Also, that depending
on what resident hall you work on the atmosphere will be different. I thought that residents
would most likely act the same throughout each resident hall however, that s not the case. I
learned from Katelynn that when she worked in Oaks that the residents seemed to be needier
compared to her current residents in Pines. Also, the residents in oaks seemed to be closer and
there would be more of a relationship with them. My preconceptions were all answered and I
found all the answers very informative. During the interview, I found majority of the
information very helpful but some of it was surprising. The information I found surprising was
how different it could be in different buildings. Also, how being an RA is more than just
working with their hall. I found out that the RA s should do desk hours and help other RA s
during room conflicts. The RA s help each other during difficult parts of the job and this shows
how leaders need to work together for a common purpose. Overall this interview has helped me
realize what will be the difficult part with the job and some of the perks. I learned many things
about being a leader and what to expect with being an RA. Being a leader has a lot of responsibility
but there is a lot of rewards that come with being a leader. Some of the rewards that come with
being a leader is learning from situations and learning which way you lead

relations between Thai Saudi. (Meghan A. McClincy, 2012).
3. Banned the recruitment of Thai workers
Cut off the Thai employees, and not allowed their people to visit Thailand.
Saudi Arabia refused to allow Thai labourers to seek employment in the oil rich country and
prohibited its citizens from visiting the Asian kingdom. (Trend News Agency, 2010)
Over 200,000 Thai nationals were working in Saudi in 1989, and millions of dollars a year were
being sent home in remittances. (Ramsey, 2015).
Thai workers dropped from 200,000 in 1989 to merely 10,000 in 2011. (Meghan A. McClincy,
2012).
Conclusion
Thailand have attempted to improve its diplomat relations with Saudi Arabia, but their attempts
have failed because of the failures to solve the murder cases and seek for the precious Blue

Cathar Heresy
The ideological impetus behind this mechanism, specifically the push to centralize and regiment
the prosecutorial process, derived from the reformist popes fighting to establish papal supremacy.
To be clear, the papal reform movement did not start the process of persecuting heresy; some of
Christianity s first leaders, such as the second century bishop Irenaeus of Lyons, wrote about heresy
and how to combat it. Furthermore, prosecutorial episodes occurred before the election of the first
reformist pope, Leo IX, in 1049. One of the most famous examples occurred in the French city of
OrlГ©ans in 1022 when a number of high ranking members of the clergy and nobility were accused
of harboring dualist beliefs and venerating the Devil. In turn, the... Show more content on

At the Third Lateran Council in 1179, Alexander III condemned the growing heretical movements
of the era, and, in the twenty seventh canon, explicitly threatened the Cathars with force. Following
Alexander III, Pope Lucius III began to officially coordinate prosecutorial procedures by outlining
the responsibilities of bishops and secular authorities in his papal pull, Ad abolendam. Pope
Innocent III continued to search for ways to suppress Catharism after his election in 1198. He
redoubled conversion efforts by commissioning a Cistercian mission to the region. Additionally, he
further developed the legal mechanisms to prosecute heresy after issuing the Vergentis in senium in
1199. The papal decree listed out the consequences of following heretical beliefs: confiscation of
property and revocation of titles, to name a few. Nevertheless, like his predecessors, Innocent III
failed to dismantle the Cathar Church through nonviolent means. In 1207, channeling the rhetorical
powers first used by Urban II, Innocent III announced the Albigensian Crusade by promising an
indulgence of the remission of sins to those who went on crusade against the

Essay about Sweatshops
Written over 50 years ago, was a declaration made, promising equality and fair treatment for the
working, which unfortunately turned out to be a false promise for some. The people I speak of,
are our fellow human beings working in slave like conditions called sweatshops. Sweatshops have
always been prevalent in society, this can be shown by looking at the history of sweatshops.
Presently organizations are failing in there strive to end sweatshops, companies are failing to abide
by the moral code (apparel industrycode), there is an ever growing gap between rich and poor, and
consumers are continuing to buy the companies products and remain unaware.

other rights. They have rallied for things like The New York City Council passes anti sweatshop

students from campuses all over America and Canada fighting for sweatshop free labor

probably because they are so close to home. Although there have been many successes for these

The Debate Of Nature Vs Nurture
The debate of nature vs nurture is long standing in the world of Psychology. In this essay we shall
look at the different perspectives and theories from the behaviourist and biological approaches and
the objective of this assignment is to discuss the importance of attachment in human development.
To do this we can make reference to the case of Genie who suffered severe neglect as a child.
Behaviourism was first introduced by John Watson who opposed the naturists and took the view
that the mind is there to be manipulated through conditioning methods and so attachments are
learned. However there are theories and studies which counter the argument. The evolutionary
theory of attachment was developed by John Bowlbya psychoanalyst. Bowlby s theories lay in the
nature side of the debate as he believes all actions are innate and we are pre programmed to form
our attachments After presenting all the evidence and theories can any conclusions be drawn about
forming attachments which are so critical for our human development.
The case of Genie drew scientists and psychologists from around the world. Genie had been
discovered at the age of 13 after having endured terrible suffering by her father since early
childhood having been chained to a potty in her room and kept in complete isolation. There was
little communication between Genie and her family, when she was to make noise her father would
beat her and when he did communicate with her he chose to growl and bark like a dog. After

Hidden Education And The Hidden Curriculum
Question 1
The hidden curriculum is sensed in every district building, school, and classroom, and an
observant outsider will be able to perceive the way things work and pick up on the culture and
values of the school as they travel the halls. Yet, the students inside and teachers attend each day,
perhaps unaware of the established environment and system. This hidden or implicit curriculum
plays a significant role in the educational life of a student and the professional life of a teacher, as
the norms and day to day happenings engender a culture that impacts behavior and beliefs. Some
aspects of the hidden curriculum are hard to identify, while some are purposeful but not explicitly
taught. The following authors address the various definitions and issues that are associated with
this powerful facet of learners education and educators profession.
First, Jackson (1968) describes hidden curriculum as the substance of school life that warrants
serious attention (in Flinders Thornton, 2013). Students spend hours and hours in school, with no
choice whether or not to go, and the unnoticed and unremarkable events that occur each day
collectively have a powerful impact on a child. Jackson compares schools to prisons, where
attendance is involuntary and the norms and routines are learned. Just like a prisoner, if a child
does not conform and learn the rules of his environment, he will struggle to make it through.
Jackson identifies criteria of hidden curriculum for

Essay on Introducing SMART Antennas to Improve Throughput
1. Purpose and scope of the system In the current wireless networking standards, omni directional
antennas are used to establish connection between the base station and the user. The radiation
emitted from this antenna is spread uniformly in a horizontal manner. These antennas are employed
because the base station is not aware of the location of the user. Hence most of the radiated beam is
lost or dispersed. Furthermore radiation from neighboring base stations with the same frequency
will cause interference. If it is possible to concentrate the beam/radiation only the user and
introduce nulls in the area of the interference, most of the radiated power can be made useful and
gives users with extended range. Introducing SMART antennas... Show more content on

Phased array antennas are to be used, whose array elements in a pattern (linear, circular, planar)
collectively give a directional pattern and by changing the phase of the current to these elements the
radiation pattern can be steered. Algorithms that is needed to achieve this is DOA (Direction of
Arrival) and Adaptive Beamforming algorithm.
Many algorithms are developed:
Direction of Arrival Algorithms:
MUSIC Multiple Signal Classification It is a subspace based DoA algorithm. Subspace
algorithms provide high resolution and are more accurate. The physical size of the array aperture
is not a concern. MUSIC algorithm is widely preferred. It involves extensive search through all
possible steering vectors. [1][2]
ESPRIT Estimation of Signal Parameters via Rotational Invariance Techniques The algorithm is
robust than MUSIC algorithm. Complexity and storage requirements are lower than for MUSIC
algorithm. It explorers the rotational invariance property in the signal subspace created by two
subarrays derived from original array with a translation invariance structure.[2]
Root MUSIC Polynomial version of MUSIC algorithm.
MVDR Minimum Variance Distortion less Response algorithm Aim of this algorithm is to
minimize the power contributed by noise and any signals coming from the interferer.
Beamforming Algorithms

Essay on Control Theory Corporate Crime
Conflict theory primarily argues that it is the economic system of capitalism itself that produces
crime however, in order to understand the causes of corporate crime, the neoliberal framework and
its utilization must be examined. Neoliberalism accords the state not to intervene or regulate the
market, and in effect produces inequality but most importantly crime. Criminal acts are committed
by the elites that are following the core of the neoliberal doctrine which is maximizing profits while
minimizing costs. Corporate crimes are committed by executives or executive officers on behalf of
corporations to further their own interests or the interest of the organizations . These crimes can

This result in a conflict between the culture of competition and ethical standards however,
corporations are not like humans they are artificial legal entities with perpetual life chartered by the
government for their existence (Nadar, 2004; pg 8). Corporations have achieved a status where they
have all constitutional rights that people have except the right against self incrimination.
Corporations engage in criminal activites on a number of different levels that harm and affect the
general public however, the public for the most part remains unaware of these activites because
these elites invest in hiding the truth which thereby renders their actions invisible.
THE INVISBALITY OF COPRORATE CRIME Secondly, Marxists argue that is it the connected
ability of the powerful to manipulate values of society which is why corporate crimes are rendered
invisible. Academics find it difficult to analyze corporate crime because large scale survey data is
not available so researchers have to rely on non objective crime statistics collected by impartial
government agencies such as StatsCan or the Home Office which usually yield tiny samples
(Snider, 2005; pg 186). Corporations do not want sociologist investigating their business practises,
unlike traditional offenders they have the ability to resist such incursions. On the other hand, the

Compare And Contrast Baseball And Softball
Though baseball and softball appear to be the same, the games have an assortment of differences
including the equipment, the setup of the playing fields, and runs of how the two games are
played. When a spectator is watching a ball game, either baseball or softball, both games may
appear to use the same equipment in their games. The subtle differences in each piece of
equipment are what make the two sports unlike each other. When someone is asked what items are
needed for baseballand softball, the most common responses are usually a bat, a ball, and a glove.
What some people may not take into account, are the often unnoticed detail of each of these items
that make them different for each sport. For example: the bat. Most commonly made of wood or
aluminum, the Major League Baseball(MLB) are only permitted to use wood bats with a length
no more than 42 . However, in professional softball leagues, the players can use bats of any
material while staying within the regulations of length (34 ), width (2.4 ), and mass (38 oz.).
The next minor oversight is the ball. Although most people know that the softball is larger in
size, a few key details separate the two. In baseball, they use a ball that is 9 in circumferance, light
weight, and is always white in color. The softball, which can be either 11 or 12 in circumference for
professional leagues, is actually more dense and can be either white or yellow in color. In regards
to the way the field is set up for baseball and

suspension bridge, this force is created from the weight of the towers and the load on the bridge.
Compression forces will also act on the surface of the bridge deck as when a load is applied it
will have some flexibility and bend, it will then travel up the cables, ropes or chains to transfer the
compression forces to the towers. The towers then dissipate the compression directly into the earth.
(Bagga 2014).
Suspension bridges usually experience torsional forces during very windy conditions where there
are high wind speeds, this can create a twisting force causing the deck to rotate resulting in the
bridge experiencing shear stress. (Bagga

Really Good At Heart Quotes
In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart. This is a quote that
finished the play of Anne Frank. I believe that Anne Frank had a good heart despite people s
decisions because of what she stated in not only this quote but also throughout the play. This quote
reveals that Anne Frank was a gentle person and thought that people should be forgiven for their
actions. During this time in history many bad things were going on. Not only was it countries
fighting against and with each other, but it was also the Holocaust. Even though these people who
were participating were doing bad things, they could still be good at heart. Anne Frank tells us her
opinion of thinking that by saying In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good
at heart. Basically, she is telling us that people are doing what they are told and think is right. If

room that him an Anne shared. Anne and Mr. Dussel had made sleeping arrangements when he had
moved in. Originally, Anne had shared her room with her sister, Margot. Anne had the room to
herself in the mornings, and Margot had the room in the afternoon. Unfortunately, Mr. Dussel
wanted the opposite. He had the room in the mornings, and Anne had it in the afternoon. Even
though they had made this arrangement, Mr. Dussel did not follow through and was inside the
room for most of the day. He also got really worked up and angry a lot but, Anne stayed hopeful
that he would change his ways and he ended up being in better spirits. Her mother Edith and she,
did not have the best relationship. They both would yell at each other, but sometimes they would

Analysis Of The Movie The Cheeks Were Red
Long before Woody Allen s jasmine was blue, his cheeks were red over an allegation about a
midnight not in Paris, but in his attic. He was called an irrational man within the halls of his own
home in Manhattan, putting Allen in a new kind of spotlight. After ending his twelve year
relationship with Mia Farrow, accusations arose claiming that Mr. Allen had molested the couples
adopted daughter Dylan when she was seven. However, despite the precarious circumstances in
which the allegations arose, both sides continue to maintain their respective arguments. Mr. Allen
objects to said accusations, claiming he is innocent. Mia, on the opposing side, is in defense of
Dylan (now thirty) who did not speak on the issue publicly until February of 2014... Show more

Even though the accusation were ludicrous in nature Mia pushed and charges were being sought
for Woody Allen. A progression of police investigations followed, in which the Connecticut Police
enlisted the help of the Child Sexual Abuse Clinic of the Yale New Haven Hospital. After
evaluating all parties involved they summed up their conclusions by making a public statement
that follows thus; It is our expert opinion that Dylan was not sexually abused by Mr. Allen.
Further, we believe that Dylan s statements on videotape and her statements to us during our
evaluation do not refer to actual events that occurred to her on August 4th, 1992 (Allen). Due to
these finding Mr. Allen was not charged with any crimes, but found the judge irresponsible for
his verdict of we will probably never know what occurred (Allen). As a result of the scandal, Mr.
Allen lost custody of his children. Twenty years after the accusations, Dylan Farrow makes her
first public comment on the incident in an open letter published in The New York Times. In the
letter she states her firm belief that Mr. Allen is guilty, in addition she shames many celebrities by
name for continuing to work with Woody Allen. In response to this letter; Woody Allen published
his own open letter in The New York Times. He

Joanne Beard s The Fourth State Of Matters
Personal Statement: It happened when I was a first semester senior in high school. I do not
remember the exact day, time, or what the weather was like, but I remember the moment. I
gripped the over annotated, photocopied packet in my eager fingers so that my sweaty fingers
made print marks on the black speckled page. And I read. I cried. And my dream changed. Before
reading The Fourth State of Matter , a New Yorker personal history piece by Joanne Beard, I

Foreign Investment During the Recent Global Economic...
Foreign Investment during the recent global economic recession
ABSTRACT:
The year 2008 marked the end of a growth cycle in international investment that started in 2004
and saw world foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows reach a historic record of $1.9 trillion in
2007. Since then FDIs have been decreasing. The fall in global FDI in 2008 2009 is the result of
two major factors affecting domestic as well as international investment. First, the capability of
firms to invest has been reduced by a fall in access to financial resources, both internally due to a
decline in corporate profits and externally due to the lower availability and higher cost of finance.
Second, the propensity to invest has been affected negatively by ... Show more content on

The proposed Xstrata takeover of a South African mining conglomerate was put on hold as the
financing was harder due to the credit crunch . There are several other examples e.g. in India .
In the face of the global economic slowdown (and recession in a number of major economies),
tighter credit conditions and falling corporate profits, many companies have announced plans to
curtail production, lay off workers and cut capital expenditure, all of which has implications for
FDI .However, the impact of the crisis varies widely, depending on region and country, with
consequences for the geographic pattern of FDI flows .
The current crisis began in the developed world, though it is rapidly spreading to developing and
transition economies. Developed countries have thus been directly hit by the financial crisis, while
its effects on developing economies have so far been indirect in most cases, with varying degrees
of severity among regions and countries. This has direct consequences on the geographical
patterns of FDI inflows. There is ample evidence that the global crisis is having a negative impact
on international investment. Tighter credit conditions and lower corporate profits have weakened
companies capability to finance their overseas projects; while the global economic recession and a
heightened appreciation of risks have eroded business confidence. Many large TNCs have revised
their global expansion plans downward, and divestments have taken

The Unrevealed Truth
In this essay I will be summarizing the myths to the truths, of the movie Kingdom of Heaven to
the real life history facts. Therefore Hollywood changed the facts to myths. I will be focusing
on the longbow creation, relationships, and killing Arabs. In the movie Kingdom of Heaven, the
longbow was used in the time of the movie. Unfortunately the longbow was really invented
around 1180 C.E.. Created by the Celts in Wales. Which the longbow was not really used by the
English military until the 1300s. A longbow is a an incredibly strong piece of wood roughly 6
feet tall and 5/8 inch wide. The longbow started becoming a great, well known weapon. The
Hundred Years War was where the longbow really showed its strength. In some of the war s most
decisive battles the longbow was the weapon that turned the tides. One memorable example: The
Battle of Crecy War.
Relationships in the movie Kingdom of Heaven was not one hundred percent accurate. There is
actually no given proof or records of any romance between Sibylla, (Balian alleged wife in the
movie) and Balian. But really, Sibylla and Baldwin, Balian brother, had love interest between each

minutes for your page to open; to waiting 5 seconds for your page to open with everything loaded.
While there is a bunch of good things the internet has provided, there is also a bunch of cyber
security threats out there. Everyone is prone to cyber attack as long as you have an electronic
device hooked up to the internet. Organization and businesses now rely on the internet for
transactions, storing information, conducting work, and so much more. One major organization
relying on the internet is the military, also known as the Department of Defense (DoD). The DoD
faces many cyber attacks. While the DoD does face many attacks, they have implemented security
measurements to thwart millions of cyber security threats. Kirschbaum (2015) shows in his article
that the DoD has started to reach out to businesses to help secure their network more. The DoD
today has become one of the hardest networks to hack into.
The DoD is targeted due to the amount of sensitive information they hold that isn t released to the
general public. Personnel with the appropriate security clearance will be granted access to this
information if they have need to know. Adversaries try to hack into the DoD to find this
information. The information might contain troop movements, personally identifiable information,
building schematics, weapon schematics, and other information that is deemed sensitive if released.

The Book Of Bauqua Summary
The Biography of Baquaqua: An Analysis of the Importance of the Conversion to Christianity in
the Liberation of Baquaqua This historical study will identify the important aspect of liberation
and Christianity conversion that is defined in the Biography of Baquaqua. In Baquaqua s arrival in
New York and, eventually, Boston, it becomes apparent that he receives strong support from
Baptist religious groups that want to liberate him from slavery. The Abolitionist Movement in the
United States provides an example of Baquaqua s conversion to Christianity, which made it
possible for him to become a freeman after many years of being abused as a slave. In many cases,

that freed slaves during the mid 19th century. Baquaqua s story provides evidence of the
important role of the American Free Baptist Movement providing educational, financial, and
transportation assistance to Baquaqua in order to escape the bonds of slavery. The role of Mr.
Jones and R. Mr. Judd provide accurate examples of the influence of the Baptist faith on
Baquaqua, which inspired him to convert to Christianity in Haiti. However, the implicit bias of
Christian influence on Baquaqua may be questionable during his stay in New York and Boston,
yet the more concrete example of R. Mr. Judd s influence on Baquaqua seems to confirm the
conversion process as part of the liberation of Baquaqua from slavery during this time of his life.
In this manner, evidence taken from the primary source of Baquaqua s narrative provides a deeper
understanding of the impact of Christian abolitionist movements in the liberation and freedom of
former slaves during the 19th century. The Biography of Baquaqua defines the important role of
Christian missionary groups and abolitionist organizations that made it possible to combat the
atrocities of slavery through Baquaqua s own experiences as a free slave in New England and in

The Treatment of Whistleblowers Essay
It used to be that whistleblowers were applauded, and they still are in the private sector, but it
seems as if government whistleblowers are criticized and many are even criminally charged.
There is certainly a different take on their activities. In fact, some advocates counsel federal
employees not to come forward with information because if they do, their lives will be destroyed
(Shulman, 2007). What often happens is that they will never be able to work in their careers again
in the same capacity (Shulman, 2007). Many whistleblowers not only lose their jobs, but they lose
their families and friends, and much of their money ends up going to attorneys (Shulman, 2007).

It can take awhile for someone to speak up, and the hesitancy is largely due to a corporate culture
that does not support the practice. It should be noted that there are whistle blowing statutes in
many jurisdictions where an employee is allowed to report illegal activity and will be protected
from being fired (Larson, 2003). Indeed, whistle blowing is largely encouraged in society in
general as the government wants people to come forward when the giants of Corporate America are
doing something bad. Of course, when it comes to leaking government secrets that is a different
matter entirely. The National Whistleblowers Center says that under Section 403 of the Intelligence
Authorization Act, the head of an employee s agency may accuse a whistleblower of leaking
classified information (Burghardt, 2011). If this were to occur, the simple accusation could lead
to the individual s blocking of access to federal pensions, and this is true even if they are in
retirement (Burghardt, 2011). One case that involves a whistleblower who has been ostracized is
Thomas Drake. Drake is a former National Security Agency (NSA) employee (Bishop, 2011). The
government pursued him for years, and eventually he would plead guilty to just one misdemeanor
in that he used a computer without authorization (Bishop, 2011). What did Drake do exactly? Why
is he considered to be a whistleblower and why has he been persecuted by the government? Drake

Disadvantages Of Special Needs Trust
Special Needs Trust (SNTs)
When are Special Needs Trusts used?
SNT A Special Needs Trust is set up for a person who receives government benefits so it doesn t
disqualify the beneficiary from said benefits, such as Social Security Income or Food Stamps/Cash
Assistance. This is completely legal and permitted under the Social Security rules provided that the
disabled beneficiary cannot control the amount or the frequency of trust distributions and they
cannot revoke the trust. By establishing a trust, which provides luxuries or other benefits which
otherwise could not be obtained by the beneficiary, the beneficiary can obtain benefits from the
trust without defeating his or her eligibility for government benefits.
Usually a special needs trust has a provision which terminates the trust if it could be used to make
the beneficiary ineligible for government benefits.
ABLE Act Accounts Taxadvantage savings accounts for individuals with disabilities and their

Analysis Of Better Than Hum Our Jobs By Kevin Kelly
Christian Lous Lange once said, Technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master. Many
would agree, as modern day scientists threaten that robots are taking over our jobs more and more
everyday. While many are discomforted by this idea, author Kevin Kelly is intrigued with this idea
in his article, Better Than Human: Why Robots WillвЋјAnd MustвЋјTake Our Jobs, saying that
increasing technology in the workplace will benefit our society by increasing productivity. In his
article, Kelly uses specific examples and tones in an attempt to relate to his audience, but fails to
present an argument that forces others to trust in the takeover of technology. Kelly uses an
academic, humorous tone in an attempt to appeal to his audience, but instead, sends a sarcastic
message to the readers. For example, Kelly wrote, A computerized brain known as the autopilot

Kelly claims that no matter what your current job or your salary, you will progress through these
Seven Stages of Robot Replacement... (311), beginning with denial that a robot could do our
jobs, then slowly accepting that these machines are capable of our everyday tasks, and more.
Kelly thinks we will believe that we are needed when the machine breaks down, but the
technology is apparently flawless. After figuring out that this technology can do our old jobs
better than we can, we realize that we did not like our job and we are much happier now that we
have moved on from our old boring job. What Kelly fails to realize is that several people do not
detest their jobs, and robots cannot do every job that humans can do. Some jobs, including social
work and criminal investigation, cannot solely be done by machines. It is seemingly impossible.
Therefore, Kelly s argument is invalid and cannot be used when arguing whether or not technology
should be allowed to takeover the

underweights the value added by the individual player in team performance and effectiveness
evaluates the final result, i.e. overall team performance. Hence, I utterly align with the objective

March, 10 2015
The Great Schism The Great Schism of 1378 was caused when the papal court, which was based
in Rome, elected an Italian Pope named Pope Urban VI. The French cardinals refused to accept the
Italian Pope so they announced that his election was invalid and elected a new Pope, Pope Clement
VII. Urban VI began to show absence in self control when he criticized the cardinals for their
luxury and laziness and when he revealed his plan of reforming the Church. Urban VI s violent and
abusive treatment towards the cardinals caused them to fear for their lives and believe he was
mentally ill; this lead to the turn against the cardinals to abandon Rome. At Anagni on August 2 the
dissidents published a manifesto in which they pronounced his election null and void, on the
ground that pressure from the Romans had made a free election impossible (Great Western
Schism). When they took away the position as Pope from Urban they elected his rival which was
Clement VII. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Technology Negative Essay
Defined as the purposeful application of information in the design, production, and utilization of
goods and services, and in the organization of human activities , technology has many applications
in today s world (WebFinance, Inc.). Whether the newest cellular device, video gaming console or
tablet, or even some new vaccine or cure for a disease, technology is meant to make humans lives
easier, faster, less stressful, more enjoyable and ultimately better, and make society a better place.
Technology grows with humans and their needs and wants. When humans needed some sort of way
to protect themselves, gather resources more easily, and farm, humans developed stone tools and
weapons to use. Windmills, steam engines, use of petroleum, and the harnessing of electricity made
life easier, faster and less stressful whether that energy is used for textiles, metallurgy, agriculture, or
transport, the harnessing of wind, steam, petroleum and electricity truly helped society grow and
the individual prosper. Later, militaries had better weapons to fight with and technology to use
(radar, sonar) to use against their opponents, and hospitals had pharmaceuticals, anesthetics,
antiseptics, and better examination techniques (X Rays, radiation therapy, blood transfusions).
While it can be useful, many question the usefulness and application of technology that seemingly
does not help society and the individual and instead are a detriment. After World War II, some

RA #2 Nationalizing Civil Liberties (Selective Incorporation) The concept of selective incorporation

federal government. According to Tom Streissguth, ... it refers to how the rights outlined in the

Theories And Social Identity Theory
4.Theories of Identity
Attempting to explain how individuals form their identity is impossible as many diverse
approaches exist. A number of sociology and psychological identity theories were considered in the
selection of a framework to explain the dynamics associated with the academic role in higher
education. Sociological identity theories are constructive when one wants to explain the different
roles that lecturers have in the academic environment of higher education. From literature the
identity theory and social identity theory were identified as been central to conceptualising the
identity forming process. These two theories were found to be useful in explaining the
psychological processes of identity development. Many social psychology theorists have

From literature, it is suggested that an individual exists within three contexts: life spheres, life roles
and work contexts. Lloyd et al (2011) cited in Jansen Roodt (2014). It is with this context in mind
that these two theories will be explored to form a basis for understanding how lecturers form their
identity related to the different roles they have in relation to the social environment they exist in.
Both the identity theory and the social identity theory is about the self with the difference being
that identity theory were formulated from structural symbolic interactionism, while the social
identity theory had its beginning in social categorization (Tajfel 1978). Both theories further claim
that more than one identity can exist simultaneously. However, each identity is restricted to the role

The Venetian Laggon and Overfishing
In recent years, the Venetian lagoon has been under the threat of devastating over fishing. This
tragic exploitation of a resource is largely promoted by the fact that property rights in the lagoon
are not well defined (Rossetto, 2000; Nunes, Silvestri, Pellizzato, Boatto, 2008; Longo, 2003).
This paper will investigate the failure of current policies in the Venetian lagoon to promote a
sustainable yield, and aims to discover what variables of a successful common property regime are
missing from the Venetian case. The issue of common property regimes in Italy has been
approached previously by multiple economists. Casari and Plott (2003), and McKean and Ostrom
(1995) have investigated common property in the context of the unique case of the Magnifica
ComunitГ di Fiemme, a forestry operation in northern Italy and successful common property
regime which despite being a different resource is faced with many of the same risks and
struggles as those faced by regulators of the lagoon. Conversely, Longo (2003) and Rossetto (2000)
have addressed the failures of the current system in the lagoon. To add to the analysis, this paper
will synthesize this research to define what makes common property regimes such as the Magnifica
ComunitГ di Fiemme capable of sustainably producing, while the regime in the Venetian Lagoon
ultimately results in devastating overfishing. In order to uncover the conditions which allow for the
exploitation of fish in the lagoon, I will examine the issue with a

I smiled because I remembered reading about all the unique and facinating birds in the book my
mother got me yesterday. I was very intruigued by the canyon s rim and gorge. Sammy said that
the canyon s gorge showed no sign of human occupation, but we could still go down there for a
tour. We all agreed that would be a good idea. Sammy told us to stay close behind him, for the
way down could be a little tricky. As we walked with Sammy I stopped every once and awhile to
bend down a study the small little yellow flowers that lined the pathway. I remembered reading
about thses flowers! They were Mountain Parsley. They looked more beautiful in person than in
my book. I pulled out my camera to take a quick picture of them. After I was finished I looked up
and Sammy and my family were gone. At first I didn t panic. Earlier we had passed those tall blue
flowers called Silvery Lupines. Or was it those bright orange ones called Scarlet Globemallows? It
was then I realised I was lost. I was lost in the middle of Colorado. No one was in sight. There
were flowers of many colors everywhere, the sun beat down hard on me, and it was scorching hot. I
sat down and thought there was no hope.

Reflecting on an E-learning Staff Training Event that I...
Introduction The primary focus of this paper is to reflect on an E learning staff development
training event that I observed for the last six years as a participant. The E learning training utilized
the same method and the same material during this time. The staff development training is an
annual requirement for teachers to complete before the beginning of each school year. This training
was mandatory and supported the concept of safe schools. The objective of the training was
highlighted, which is to ensure each teacher successful complete the training to support state laws
and requirements for the safety of students in public schools. This training is used to substitute for
classroom training on those subjects that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A lack of motivation results directly from previous experience with the training, since the training
has not changed over the last six years. The information presented did have graph and pictures but
designed in a clipart format with cartoonish characters suited for participants in a younger age
group. The questions are the same one and in the same sequence. The content lacks creativity and
depth. Critical thinking skills also do not appear to be important to the creator of this course. I have
taken the exams for the course without having to complete the individual modules. This is a
problem since I am sure there have been changes about how to handle safety issue in the school and
classroom environment. The professional development of teachers should be an important objective
for school administrators, since teachers affect student lives daily. Understandably, teachers are
required to receive formal training and certification, based primarily on subject matter content,
communication skills, classroom management abilities, and student interaction. An important
consideration is the professional development training that teachers receive and the method used to
deliver the training. Of course, there is the traditional face to face method, but with organizations,
seeking ways to reduce training cost and travel expenses technology is an effective alternative for
training. Technology implementation increased to reach the needs of teacher

  • 2. What Does The Light Symbolize In The Black Cat Authors who write literature often put their feelings into their work which can cause us to connect with how the authors feel sometimes. Authors as well have some sort of past so that often without thinking write something that can be a symbolize something from their past, so if they had a bad past then their literature may be tragic or gothic. For example The Black Cat written by Edgar Allan Poeuses a light and dark theme which can go along with the gothic theme. Light and Dark symbolize how dark Poe s childhood was since he writes about death, murder, and other gory storylines. Poe uses light and dark to show the different aspects of the narrators and how guilt can consume a person. One example of the thesis is the black cat who was in the wall with the corpse the whole time. The quote for this found on page eight goes like this I had walled the monster up within the wall so the narrator never noticed when the cat slipped into the tomb with the corpse and was in the tomb for days. This quote supports the thesis... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The quote for the light part of my thesis is I love the old man this represents the light part because he loved him he cared for the old man but couldn t hold back his fears and madness. The dark quote is Villans! I shrieked, dissemble no more! I admit the deed! tear up the planks here, here! It is the beating of his hideous heart this means that the guilt has consumed him but before that he went through so much madness because of the vulture eye that it caused the narrator to murder the old man even tho he loved the old man. The eye I believe is like a vulture s eye because I believe that the old man had cataracts causing to have a vulture like eye because vultures usually have a eye with cataracts. Geographically, Panama lies on an isthmus, a strip of land that essentially connects the greater landmasses of North and South America. It is believed that volcanic activity in the late Pliocene era closed the former Central American Seaway that had separated the two continents. The climatic implications of this landform are incredible, allowing for the redistribution of oceanic currents and the formation of the Gulf Stream of the Atlantic of today. However, this union too would collapse in 1840, when separatist Panamanian forces led by a group of rebels called the Sociedad de Amigos del PaГs began to resist the governance of BogotГЎ. Panama is geographically placed at extreme economic advantage due to its close and centralized proximity to North and South America and easy accessibility by sea, yet the Columbian Republic kept this advantage at bay for political purposes, creating a situation in which Panama was essentially left at an economic standstill. This tactic created a situation which made Panama s economic advancement nearly impossible. This coupled with requests for large sums of money from the Panamanian treasury to fund the war in Pasto, despite unquestionably trying times, led to the revolutionary upheaval. In October of 1840, the new Governor Carlos de Icaza refused to comply to yet another request from BogotГЎ for more funds from Panama on the grounds that the Panamanian treasury was empty. Four weeks after this announcement, on November 18, 1840, Panama declared its independence (MГ©ndez). In 1903, the United states under President Theodore Roosevelt signed a treaty with Panama which gave over the rights to build and control the passage through what we now know as the famous Panama Canal, with the purpose of creating a politically, economically and geographically significant waterway that would allow for the travel of ships from the ... Cathar Heresy The ideological impetus behind this mechanism, specifically the push to centralize and regiment the prosecutorial process, derived from the reformist popes fighting to establish papal supremacy. To be clear, the papal reform movement did not start the process of persecuting heresy; some of Christianity s first leaders, such as the second century bishop Irenaeus of Lyons, wrote about heresy and how to combat it. Furthermore, prosecutorial episodes occurred before the election of the first reformist pope, Leo IX, in 1049. Pope Innocent III continued to search for ways to suppress Catharism after his election in 1198. He redoubled conversion efforts by commissioning a Cistercian mission to the region. Additionally, he further developed the legal mechanisms to prosecute heresy after issuing the Vergentis in senium in 1199. The papal decree listed out the consequences of following heretical beliefs: confiscation of property and revocation of titles, to name a few. Nevertheless, like his predecessors, Innocent III failed to dismantle the Cathar Church through nonviolent means. In this essay we shall look at the different perspectives and theories from the behaviourist and biological approaches and the objective of this assignment is to discuss the importance of attachment in human development. To do this we can make reference to the case of Genie who suffered severe neglect as a child. Behaviourism was first introduced by John Watson who opposed the naturists and took the view that the mind is there to be manipulated through conditioning methods and so attachments are learned. However there are theories and studies which counter the argument. The evolutionary theory of attachment was developed by John Bowlbya psychoanalyst. Bowlby s theories lay in the nature side of the debate as he believes all actions are innate and we are pre programmed to form our attachments After presenting all the evidence and theories can any conclusions be drawn about forming attachments which are so critical for our human development. The case of Genie drew scientists and psychologists from around the world. Genie had been discovered at the age of 13 after having endured terrible suffering by her father since early childhood having been chained to a potty in her room and kept in complete isolation. There was little communication between Genie and her family, when she was to make noise her father would beat her and when he did communicate with her he chose to growl and bark like a dog. After ... • 18. Hidden Education And The Hidden Curriculum Question 1 The hidden curriculum is sensed in every district building, school, and classroom, and an observant outsider will be able to perceive the way things work and pick up on the culture and values of the school as they travel the halls. Yet, the students inside and teachers attend each day, perhaps unaware of the established environment and system. This hidden or implicit curriculum plays a significant role in the educational life of a student and the professional life of a teacher, as the norms and day to day happenings engender a culture that impacts behavior and beliefs. Some aspects of the hidden curriculum are hard to identify, while some are purposeful but not explicitly taught. The following authors address the various definitions and issues that are associated with this powerful facet of learners education and educators profession. First, Jackson (1968) describes hidden curriculum as the substance of school life that warrants serious attention (in Flinders Thornton, 2013). Students spend hours and hours in school, with no choice whether or not to go, and the unnoticed and unremarkable events that occur each day collectively have a powerful impact on a child. Jackson compares schools to prisons, where attendance is involuntary and the norms and routines are learned. Just like a prisoner, if a child does not conform and learn the rules of his environment, he will struggle to make it through. Jackson identifies criteria of hidden curriculum for ... Purpose and scope of the system In the current wireless networking standards, omni directional antennas are used to establish connection between the base station and the user. The radiation emitted from this antenna is spread uniformly in a horizontal manner. These antennas are employed because the base station is not aware of the location of the user. Hence most of the radiated beam is lost or dispersed. Furthermore radiation from neighboring base stations with the same frequency will cause interference. If it is possible to concentrate the beam/radiation only the user and introduce nulls in the area of the interference, most of the radiated power can be made useful and gives users with extended range. Many algorithms are developed: Direction of Arrival Algorithms: MUSIC Multiple Signal Classification It is a subspace based DoA algorithm. Subspace algorithms provide high resolution and are more accurate. The physical size of the array aperture is not a concern. MUSIC algorithm is widely preferred. Since then FDIs have been decreasing. The fall in global FDI in 2008 2009 is the result of two major factors affecting domestic as well as international investment. From waiting 2 minutes for your page to open; to waiting 5 seconds for your page to open with everything loaded. While there is a bunch of good things the internet has provided, there is also a bunch of cyber security threats out there. Everyone is prone to cyber attack as long as you have an electronic device hooked up to the internet. Organization and businesses now rely on the internet for transactions, storing information, conducting work, and so much more. One major organization relying on the internet is the military, also known as the Department of Defense (DoD). The DoD faces many cyber attacks. While the DoD does face many attacks, they have implemented security measurements to thwart millions of cyber security threats. Kirschbaum (2015) shows in his article that the DoD has started to reach out to businesses to help secure their network more. The DoD today has become one of the hardest networks to hack into. The DoD is targeted due to the amount of sensitive information they hold that isn t released to the general public. Personnel with the appropriate security clearance will be granted access to this information if they have need to know. Adversaries try to hack into the DoD to find this information. The information might contain troop movements, personally identifiable information, building schematics, weapon schematics, and other information that is deemed sensitive if released. ... The Treatment of Whistleblowers Essay It used to be that whistleblowers were applauded, and they still are in the private sector, but it seems as if government whistleblowers are criticized and many are even criminally charged. There is certainly a different take on their activities. In fact, some advocates counsel federal employees not to come forward with information because if they do, their lives will be destroyed (Shulman, 2007). What often happens is that they will never be able to work in their careers again in the same capacity (Shulman, 2007). It can take awhile for someone to speak up, and the hesitancy is largely due to a corporate culture that does not support the practice. It should be noted that there are whistle blowing statutes in many jurisdictions where an employee is allowed to report illegal activity and will be protected from being fired (Larson, 2003). Indeed, whistle blowing is largely encouraged in society in general as the government wants people to come forward when the giants of Corporate America are doing something bad. Of course, when it comes to leaking government secrets that is a different matter entirely. The National Whistleblowers Center says that under Section 403 of the Intelligence Authorization Act, the head of an employee s agency may accuse a whistleblower of leaking classified information (Burghardt, 2011). If this were to occur, the simple accusation could lead to the individual s blocking of access to federal pensions, and this is true even if they are in retirement (Burghardt, 2011). One case that involves a whistleblower who has been ostracized is Thomas Drake. Drake is a former National Security Agency (NSA) employee (Bishop, 2011). The government pursued him for years, and eventually he would plead guilty to just one misdemeanor in that he used a computer without authorization (Bishop, 2011). What did Drake do exactly? SNT A Special Needs Trust is set up for a person who receives government benefits so it doesn t disqualify the beneficiary from said benefits, such as Social Security Income or Food Stamps/Cash Assistance. This is completely legal and permitted under the Social Security rules provided that the disabled beneficiary cannot control the amount or the frequency of trust distributions and they cannot revoke the trust. The Great Schism Analysis Amelia Kasgorgis Ms. Argue Mission March, 10 2015 The Great Schism The Great Schism of 1378 was caused when the papal court, which was based in Rome, elected an Italian Pope named Pope Urban VI. The French cardinals refused to accept the Italian Pope so they announced that his election was invalid and elected a new Pope, Pope Clement VII. Urban VI began to show absence in self control when he criticized the cardinals for their luxury and laziness and when he revealed his plan of reforming the Church. Urban VI s violent and abusive treatment towards the cardinals caused them to fear for their lives and believe he was mentally ill; this lead to the turn against the cardinals to abandon Rome. At Anagni on August 2 the dissidents published a manifesto in which they pronounced his election null and void, on the ground that pressure from the Romans had made a free election impossible (Great Western Schism). Technology Negative Essay Defined as the purposeful application of information in the design, production, and utilization of goods and services, and in the organization of human activities , technology has many applications in today s world (WebFinance, Inc.). Whether the newest cellular device, video gaming console or tablet, or even some new vaccine or cure for a disease, technology is meant to make humans lives easier, faster, less stressful, more enjoyable and ultimately better, and make society a better place. Technology grows with humans and their needs and wants. When humans needed some sort of way to protect themselves, gather resources more easily, and farm, humans developed stone tools and weapons to use. Windmills, steam engines, use of petroleum, and the harnessing of electricity made life easier, faster and less stressful whether that energy is used for textiles, metallurgy, agriculture, or transport, the harnessing of wind, steam, petroleum and electricity truly helped society grow and the individual prosper. Later, militaries had better weapons to fight with and technology to use (radar, sonar) to use against their opponents, and hospitals had pharmaceuticals, anesthetics, antiseptics, and better examination techniques (X Rays, radiation therapy, blood transfusions). While it can be useful, many question the usefulness and application of technology that seemingly does not help society and the individual and instead are a detriment. • 42. The Venetian Laggon and Overfishing In recent years, the Venetian lagoon has been under the threat of devastating over fishing. This tragic exploitation of a resource is largely promoted by the fact that property rights in the lagoon are not well defined (Rossetto, 2000; Nunes, Silvestri, Pellizzato, Boatto, 2008; Longo, 2003). This paper will investigate the failure of current policies in the Venetian lagoon to promote a sustainable yield, and aims to discover what variables of a successful common property regime are missing from the Venetian case. The issue of common property regimes in Italy has been approached previously by multiple economists. Casari and Plott (2003), and McKean and Ostrom (1995) have investigated common property in the context of the unique case of the Magnifica ComunitГ di Fiemme, a forestry operation in northern Italy and successful common property regime which despite being a different resource is faced with many of the same risks and struggles as those faced by regulators of the lagoon. Conversely, Longo (2003) and Rossetto (2000) have addressed the failures of the current system in the lagoon. To add to the analysis, this paper will synthesize this research to define what makes common property regimes such as the Magnifica ComunitГ di Fiemme capable of sustainably producing, while the regime in the Venetian Lagoon ultimately results in devastating overfishing.
