Fire Island, A Historical Overview Essay
Fire Island, A Historical Overview Rhythmic waves, high dunes, ancient maritime
forests, historic landmarks and glimpses of wildlife Fire Island has been a special
place for diverse plants, animals and people for centuries The origin of Fire Island
s name is not quite clear; there are many stories as to where the Island got its name.
It is thought that its Native American name was Sictem Hackey, which translated
means Land of the Secatogues , an Indian tribe in Bay Shore, New York. It was
also part of what was called the Seal Islands. Some historians have also suggested
that the name Fire derived from a misinterpretation of the Dutch word vijf ( five ) or
in another version vier ( four ) referring to the number of islands... Show more content

Fire Island remained in the Smith family up until 1900. Prior to 1900 there were
no year round residents on the Island with the exception of the Lighthouse keeper
and a few fish factory workers and a handful of squatters. Other than the Surf Hotel
there were only a few buildings that were used during the summer as bars and
restaurants for those who would sail across the bay for a day at the beach and the
occasional clambake. The first large house ever to be built was constructed in
1795 in Cherry Grove by Jeremiah Smith, Smith was believed to have set fires to
lure ships to sand bars just off shore and kill the crews The Surf Hotel which was
located just east of the Lighthouse was an expansive building built on 120 acres of
land that David Sammis owned, or so he thought a battle over the ownership of
this land went on for years in court with Sammis winning. Sammis built the hotel in
1856 and by 1880 the hotel boasted rooms for 1500 guests. The Surf was host to
many politically connected players in government be it local, city, state, and some
federal, as well as the well off from the region. The Southside Rail Road soon to be
known as the Long Island Rail Road came to Babylon in 1867 and the town was
dubbed the gateway to Fire Island, which has since been bestowed on the town of
Bay Shore. The guests of the hotel would take a stage coach for the four mile
journey to the Bay Shore docks. It is assumed by a
Society During The Era Of The Third Reich By James
Baldwin
Throughout the course of history it is evident that the values of society have
dramatically changed over the years. The values that people posses change
depending on what s occurring around the world at the time, whether a fierce,
bloody war resulting from a calamity or a time of peace and renaissance. The
choices people make can either help change society for the better or they can help
bring society down. Many different factors lead to the events that can change entire
societies such as educationor discrimination, both of which can have negative
repercussions.
One way society can change is through the education system. Students are highly
perceptive and can easily pick up on the tendencies and opinions of others. In his

Rosa Parks became tired of the segregation and the fact that she had to sit in the
back of the bus to make room for the white people, so one day she refused to get
out of her seat when the bus driver told her to, leading to her getting arrested and
starting the freedom movement. Martin Luther King Jr., was an American Baptist
minister who was also tired of the segregation and wanted to live in a world where
the whites and blacks could both be treated equally. He began leading non violent
freedom movements ending legal segregation, changing the way society lived for
many years, and making history. In a Talk to Teachers Baldwin explained that if he
was a teacher, he would teach his students that there are currently very few
standards in this country which are worth a man s respect. That it is up to him to
change these standards for the sake of the life and the health of the country, which
is an important thing for teachers to do, because while he doesn t change society
as a whole, he is changing the way this kid sees the world and they way he is going
to live his life and changing the perspective of one person makes all the difference.
Baldwin also states that In order for me to live, I decided very early that some
mistake had been made somewhere. I was not a nigger even though you called me
one. But if I was a nigger in your eyes, there was something about you

Winter s Bone Analysis
Winter s Bone, to me, is a sad, dreary, story about family struggles, drugs, poverty,
and courage. The plot is pretty straight forward, Ree has to find her father before
losing her house while trying to take care of her two brothers and mentally
helpless mother. But her struggles along the way is what makes this book dark
and interesting. It is quite astonishing what people are capable of when their
survival or way of life is threatened. So far, I don t think I can call Ree the hero yet,
because she is just walking around looking for clues and getting assaulted. Although
I know she is not a villain either. So what role does she play in this novel? She is
strong, stubborn and takes pain without complaining, and as far as I have read she is
a survivor in this story. The setting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only does Ozark fit the dark and dreary story line but it also is where the author,
Daniel Woodrell, is from which adds more meaning and truth to the people and
scenery for the reader during the story.
The novel is written in first person, Ree being the narrator thought the book. I can
understand her thoughts throughout the story and how she feels in every
situation. I believe Daniel Woodrell has told the story through the eyes of a
teenage girl because the tendency of Ozark women is to speak and apologize for
their irrational and violent men. The women don t have much say and have to stay
under the radar. While Ree does the opposite, she goes up against invincible forces
armed only with savviness, courage, stubbornness, and a willingness to get beaten.
He is able to convey that all women should be strong and not willing to back down.
Woodrell was also able to reveal how men treat women in the Ozarks and the
hardships women have with taking care of the home and their family. Ree was left to
take care

This is the sense of tort, against the action where the law threatens to private

crime is a wrong which was done on the basis of violation of public regulations and
services that affect the entire community and we can describe it as a public

What makes Augustine s Confessions memorable
Augustine s Confessions was a major piece of work that heavily influenced the
religion back in his times. Augustine s Confessions is still read today because of the
relatability it shows in aspects of depression, love, and finding your identity.
Throughout the book Augustine goes through his life and the decisions he has made
and how they made him either a better or worse person. We can use Augustine s
Confessions as a tool to also evaluate our own lives and decisions because of the
way he judges himself and what he considers to be the best and worst things he has
done and why. Augustine goes through trying to find himself through things of the
world and then finally realizes why he can not when he steps back and looks at the
fact that he must first find himself in God.
Augustine finds himself going through hard times throughout the Confessions and
this includes the struggle with depression. Augustine loses one of his very close
friends and begins to become depressed, I raged and sighed and wept and worried, I
could not rest, I could not think intelligent. (Augustine. 64). When Augustine
becomes depressed he says that he does not want to be around people and people can
relate to this because when people are upset they want time to themselves to think not
time around other people. Another example of when Augustine is depressed is when
Augustine realizes how
Group Psychotherapy Theory
After reading the book The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy , the author
Irvin D. Yalom provides a complete context of group psychotherapy standards. The
specification of research, developments and topics makes this book to be rather

tasks of group therapist, and chapter 12 on the advanced group, as we will get into
further detail throughout this paper on the interactional focus of group therapy.
Chapter 1 covers a variety of important topics that contribute to the effectiveness of

As mentioned, the job of a therapist to create the machinery of therapy, to set it in
motion, and to keep it operating with the maximum effectives (Yalom, 2005). First
and foremost, the relationship between clients and therapist must be established for
specific tasks and techniques to be of quality effectiveness. The group therapy for
the therapist is indirect, which underlies the difference of roles in a group setting
and on a one to one. One fundamental tasks is the creation and maintenance of the
group by the group leader that serves as unifying force. Concepts and techniques are

is where the therapist needs a balance and make adjustments as needed to provide a

Wuthering Heights A New Gothic
Wuthering Heights A New Gothic Wuthering Heights is considered one of the
greatest Gothic novels written by Emily Bronte, the only novel published under the
name Ellis Bell. It is a tragic love story that presents the consuming passion between
Heathcliff and Catherine. These two characters live under the pressures of social
class and gender inequality. One of the classic features of Gothic literature is the
supernatural. Bronte succeeds in combing the Gothic elements with romantic themes
and horror and supernatural sense to involve the readers to use their imagination and
stimulate their senses within the story. The history of Gothic literature began in the
late seventeenth century by Horace Walpole. He is the first author who... Show more

Bronte creates that atmosphere to inspire the readers about what it can be in that
landscape. It is an atmosphere of isolation, imprisonment, violence, and revenge.
Mr. Lockwood gives his exclamation on the first page of the novel that he says, In
all England, I do not believe that I could have fixed on a situation completely
removed from the stir society (3). In addition, Mr. Lockwood expresses his fear of
travelling the moors in a stormy and wild weather. The shift of the weather in the
moorland suggests the occurrence of a serious and dangerous disaster. For example, a
second violent storm occurs when Heathcliff departs from Wuthering Heights. Bronte
states that the weather was a very dark evening for summer: the clouds appeared
inclined to thunder, and I said we had better all sit down; the approaching rain would
be certain to bring him home without further trouble... and that the storm came
rattling over the Heights in full fury (54). The surrounding environment and stormy
weather create a truly Gothic setting. One of the classical features of Gothic literature
is the supernatural scene that is expressed differently within the novel. Bronte uses
some of the gothic elements in her narrative and makes some of these elements
inexplicit wither it is a dream or a supernatural event. She introduces the idea of
psychological fears that make a person to
An Unfolding of William Blake s quot; the Chimney...
An Unfolding of William Blake s The Chimney Sweeper.
William Blake s poem The Chimney Sweeper gives us a look into the unfortunate
lives of 18th century London boys whose primary job was to clear chimneys of the
soot that accumulated on its interior; boys that were named climbing boys or chimney
sweepers. Blake, a professional engraver, wrote this poem (aabb rhyme), in the voice
of a young boy, an uneducated chimney sweeper. This speaker is obviously a
persona, a fictitious character created by Blake, as it is apparent that he wasn t a
child or a chimney sweeper at the time he wrote this poem.
The Chimney Sweeper is divided in six stanzas; the first stanza of this narrative poem
starts off with the young chimney sweeper, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The voice of the story, the young boy, in the seventh verse showed compassion for
the new climbing boy and by doing this he made visible to us that the real child in
him had not died, that although he had to work in conditions that were not suitable
for a boy his age, he still kept his humanity.
In the poem s next 2 stanzas the narrator speaks about a dream that Tom Dacre had
the same day his youth was taken from him. He had dreamt that sweepers whom he
knew where all of them locked up in coffins of black. The black color of these
coffins means, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, seriously bad or
unfortunate, associated with severely bad conditions or misfortune. The coffins,
which are a container in which a dead body is placed for a burial (OED), represent
all of them being trapped in this miserable black world where, ironically, children
worked to make money for adults. The entire dream is influenced by Tom s fear of
being trapped in this hell for all his life. Later, in the fifth stanza an Angel appeared
in Tom s dream that opened up the
coffins and set them free of their misfortune. This angel that freed them can be
considered as an omen, a sign that shows how something, good or bad, will happen
in the future. Tom ran down a flat expanse of land with the sweepers where they had
fun and washed themselves up. The words bright and shine Blake used in verses

How Did Germany Build The Triple Alliance
the triple alliance consisted of three countries Germany, Austria Hungary, and Italy.
They stood against the triple Entente which had France, Russia, and Great Britain.
Germany and Austria Hungary were already allies in 1879, they worried about a

He was one of the first artists to experiment with blueprint paper in the early fifties,

mediums that best did that for him whether it be photographs, (he often would have a

The Dada movement formed during the First World War clearly affected Robert s
work; they promoted the use of collage and assemblage, in particular artists such as
Kurt Schwitters and Hannah Hoch as well as artists of the movement such as Man

broke down the boundaries between art and everyday life, for they were concerned
with provoking the public into reacting to their activities and Rauschenberg too did
not want to create enduring masterpieces for an elite but to further a perpetual
process of discovery in which everyone could participate
It was in 1962 that Rauschenberg picked up the silk screening process and both he
and Andy Warhol explored this new technique together.
The process for Almanac would consist of him enlarging his chosen images onto the

Dumas class were very interested in what her life was like in Iran. They wanted to
know about more important things, such as camels. How many did we own back

As time went on in the Dumas journey in America she got asked more and more

Abstract Preferred stocks are a hybrid of debt and equity. In this paper, we examine
preferred stocks with an emphasis on the risks of holding portfolios of preferred
stocks. We demonstrate that preferred stocks are similar to debt when the issuing
company is financially healthy, and become more similar to equity when the
company s financial condition deteriorates. We show that issuers of preferred stocks
are heavily concentrated in the financial services industry, a fact that exposes
investors who hold a portfolio concentrated in preferred stocks to further risk industry

Scholars recognize Thucydides as one of the most celebrated Athenian historian, with
him named as the father of scientific history. Thucydides wrote the unfinished History
of the Peloponnesian War. In a period with scarce evidence available, Thucydides
single narrative acts as the sole artefact that provides information regarding the war.
His History narrates the Peloponnesian Warbetween Athens and Sparta, and also
recounts the foreign relations military and diplomatic activities of Athens and various
Greek states during the fifth century BC. With his History as the main source, the
question of whether Thucydidesmay be bias in his writing towards Athens emerges.

Thucydides depicts Pericles s funeral oration early on in his History, which honored
Athenians strength and sense of duty as well as believing in the greatness of
Athens. Everything Pericles spoke of in the oration glorified Athens
achievements, aiming to raise morale during the state of war. In his praises,
Pericles acknowledges Athens as an exemplar state to other Greeks and declares in
short, I [Pericles] say that as a city we are the school of Hellas, while I doubt if the
world can produce a man who, where he has only himself to depend upon, is equal
to so many emergencies, and graced by so happy a versatility, as the Athenian (Thuc.
2.41). One may argue that the oration illustrates the epitome of Thucydides support
for Athens, as he did not record the speech verbatim and could have instilled his own
views. Nevertheless, as demonstrated in other instances, Thucydides is just as critical
of Athens as praising. In the Melian Dialogue that took place in 416 BC, Athens
essentially imposed its vast power on the small island of Melos. Athenians threatened
Melians to surrender and pay tribute, or suffer the repercussions as they eloquently
stated, in terms of practicality the dominant exact what they can and the weak
concede what they must (Thuc. 5.89). The Melians refusal to obey to Athens
demands culminated to a siege that ended in the Athenian assembly voting to
mercilessly execute all the men and enslave all women and children. The once
glorified portrayal of Athens succumbs to a decline of moral values and transforms
into one of an oppressive state with an entitled mentality to conquer other Greeks,
comparable to the traits of tyrants in their hunger to acquire more power. Here,
Thucydides made the conscious choice to relate two drastically different speeches
that paints Athens in both a

Same sex marriage has been an issue among society for many years. Not all people
understand there is no ban on same sex marriage nor is it illegal. In all fifty states
there are couples of the same sex who live together, ones who choose their
professional job to be in a workplace where joint benefits are offered, and ones who
choose a religious community which accepts their relationship. Those who believe
this is an issue and feel it should be illegal were likely raised to believe it is wrong to

Anyone could sit and debate this issue all day long, but understanding the reality of
the situation is another story. Everyone s reality is different and everyone s
perspective on same sex marriage is different. If society came together as a whole
and realized that any person who is categorized as gay has the same opportunities
in life that anyone else has. They cannot help that they are gay, they were born that
way. Being who you are is especially important in order to feel accepted as a person.
Without the support of society and the government same sex marriages will bring a
new chapter into each and every state. It is up to the individuals in society to accept
one not because of their sexual orientation but be accepted for who they are as an
individual. Listening to others debate this issue is interesting and the feedback one
encounters could make feelings change or become real.

Post-Cooperative Nursing Research Papers
What is Post operative Nurse?
When a patient leaves the care of the anesthetist after an operation, they wake up
under the supervision of a post operative nurse. These health care professionals work
in recovery rooms to ensure that post operative patients, who often wake up in
physiologically fragile states, will be expertly and continuously supervised.
Basic Responsibilities
Post operative nurses have two basic responsibilities: transfer and monitor patients
after surgeries. After surgeries, post operative nurses assess the patient s condition
and determine if they are able to be moved to the post anesthesia care unit (PACU).
If the vital signs are instable or if the surgical team encounters problems, the patient
may need to remain in the operating room. Once the doctor determines that the
patient can safely be moved, they will be transferred to the PACU for continued care
under the watchful eyes of a post operative nurse. There, patients will be carefully
monitored when they wake up, so they will know what is going on. Post operative

Segregation In African Americans Essay
Walls,Borders and Boundaries Assessment Despite its controversy in society, many
individuals still smoke marijuana recreationally. In November of 2016, eight states
of the U.S. legalized use of marijuana for both medical and recreational use. Black
rap music often has references to marijuana either directly or by using slang, and
these references have increased over the years. This has created an association
between the African American community and cannabis usage. Specifically, society
primarily focuses on drug crimes committed by black individuals solely because of
this false connotation. We conducted a survey centered around marijuana usage and
black rap music, with no emphasis on having participants of different races. While

Segregation was a practice commonly used to separate the two races, white and
black, in a variety of social settings. Segregation was a form of racial stereotyping
that affected the lives of many innocent people of color because of the false mindset
that a certain race is better than all the other. These stereotypes resulted in the deaths
of thousands by the hands of the KKK and lynching, and a biased judicial system. In
the same vein, marijuana stereotyping has limited the lives of many African
Americans through bias in the education system, work force, and justice system to
name a few. By tearing down the wall of false stereotypes about African Americans,
the vast cultural implication would abolish incorrect preconceived notions in modern
society, therefore expanding the prospects of minorities and elevating social
standards to provide equality for all. The decrease in assumptions and the constant
search for truth impacts not only minority races, but can expand to other
demographics such as the poor, rich, or mentally insane, and even regions such as the
deep south or west coast inhabitants in the United States alone. By erasing the walls
and stereotypes between different social groups, ethically America would become a
more inclusive, less assuming, and overall a better
Comparing Exodus 2 And Deuteronomy 5
Exodus 19 20 and Deuteronomy 5 Moses went up to god and god told him to obey
him fully and that he would become his treasured possession. God practically tells
mosses that he is a disciple for the holy nation and it is his job to tell the people of
Israel to obey God s word so that they can become the lords treasured possessions
too. The Israelitesagree to the lord s word and mosses delivers the message that they
must get ready for the third day because that is when the lord will come down on
Mount Sinai. To prepare for the third day the Israelites were told to wash their
clothes and abstain from sexual relations. When the lord landed, he insisted that the
people of Israel and the priests must not force their way up to see the lord. If they...

The commandments are a covenant that god has made with his newfound
followers, the Israelites. The commandments tell you what you must do to be a
follower of God. Both Exodus 2 and Deuteronomy 5 state the 10 commandments
but have slight variations. In Exodus 20 verse 8 it says Remember the Sabbath day
in Deuteronomy Verse 5 it says Observe the Sabbath day. Even though both the
verses have variations they are still required to do the same thing on the Sabbath
day and that is to keep the day holy and not do any work. Exodus 20 verse 11 and
Deuteronomy 5 verse 15 are very different. Exodus 20 Verse 11 says that in six
days the Lord made heaven and earth, and rested the seventh, the Lord blessed the
Sabbath day and hallowed it. Verse 11 is just telling you what the Lord did.
Deuteronomy 5 verse 15 says that you should remember that you were a servant,

that in order to be grateful for his work you must keep the Sabbath day, meaning that

Genie Wild Child
The Secret of Wild Child is an Emmy award winning documentary which talks about
a feral child Genie and how the affects of social isolation had severely damaged her
both physically and mentally.
Genie was 13 when she was discovered by social workers. She was kept chained to a
potty chair in her bedroom. She was abused by her parents so much that she
couldn t even learn to speak. She was made to sit alone every day and night. She
had no one to talk to and the girl when found by social workers gave an impression
of an infant. She was still in diapers when she was found.
Genie had a very awkward bunny walk and non human features. She used to sniff
and claw everything. She used to make noises as she couldn t speak and she was
abused by her parents ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Genie was hence removed from Rigler s care and she was sent to her birth mother
who found it too difficult to handle her and hence Genie was moved from one foster
home to the other. This period was the beginning of an end for Genie as she was
abused regularly.
In 1975 came a shocker when Genie s birth mother sued the Riglers and the research
team charging them with excessive testing and exploiting the girl.
After the lawsuit, Genie was sent back to the Children s Hospital. Her condition had
worsened due to lack of care at foster homes. Unfortunately, the progressed that was
observed at the early stages of her treatment was nowhere to be seen now due to
subsequent treatment she received at the foster homes. Afraid of being abused again
for opening her mouth, Genie had turned back to being silent.
In Genie s case, sometimes her interest came second to interests of the scientists. In
her case, to make matters worse, one man played the role of psychologist and
scientist.
Hence we can conclude that even though Genie showed signs of doing the
impossible by turning her life of social isolation around, she was unable to achieve
this feat in the end all because of involvement of the legal authorities and the lawsuits
and the greed that the team had developed to become famous and make a name for
Mary Rowlandson vs Anne Bradstreet Essay
Mary Rowlandson and Anne Bradstreet are two women with different stories and
one similar faith. Their similar faith in God and passion for writing allowed the two
women to survive the contrast of hardships each woman had to endure. Furthermore,
in this essay, I will compare and contrast the lives and faith of Rowlandson and
Bradstreet. In the story Narrative of the Captivityand Restoration of Mrs. Mary
Rowlandsonwritten by Mary Rowlandson herself, we read that she is taken captive
by a group of Indians. Rowlandson was torn away from husband, children, and town.

If it wasn t for those things, Rowlandson would have most likely developed a
mental illness. Similarly, Bradstreet, like Rowlandson, also became very lonely,
despite having her children around for her husband was gone a lot of the time.
Simon [Bradstreet s] political duties kept him traveling to various colonies on
diplomatic errands, so Anne would spend her lonely days and nights reading from her
father s vast collection of books, and educating her children. (annebradstreet.com) As
you can see, Anne was left alone with her children most of the time.
Mary Rowlandson was kidnapped unlike Bradstreet. Because Rowlandson was
kidnapped, this influenced a lot of things in her life. More specifically, Rowlandson s
writing. Rowlandson used her experience to influence her writing, teach other people
moral lessons, and educate them on the dangers of the outside world. From the
multiple biblical references in her narrative, I cannot help but come to the conclusion
that Rowlandson is not just putting the verses in there for herself. But that she is
trying to teach the reader a lesson by telling them not to stray from God when times
are tough, and not to move from salvation. On the contrary, Bradstreet was far from
being kidnapped. Because Bradstreet had different experiences than Rowlandson, the
themes and messages behind her poetry is different than Mary s. Bradstreet s poetry
was mostly about her own feelings. According to one

Essay about The Turks and Mongols
In order to discuss the movements of Asiatic peoples into Europe from the first
inroad of the Huns to the conquests of the Osmanli Turks in the sixteenth century, it
will be necessary to review briefly the events in central and eastern Asia which
preceded and precipitated these incursions.
From the time that the Irano Aryan ancestors had arrived in Russian Turkestan in
anticipation of their descent into the hills of northwestern India, much of this grassy
plain had been the home of those Iranians who remained behind while their kinsmen
climbed the mountains which would take them into India and the Irano Afghan
plateau. These Iranians apparently developed, or borrowed, a high degree of

When we view the Hunnish inroad into Europe in the light of the total context of Old
World history, it ceases to be a strange inruption of hideous and invincible barbarians
darting out of nowhere, as it at first appeared to the Byzantines and Romans. The
Huns were a people who had been exposed to a high civilization that of China; they
were cultured if illiterate, and in every sense the match of the frightened adversaries
whom they met in Europe. When we examine the details of these invasions, we see
that it was not one simple inroad, but a series of them in which a perplexing
confusion of names is involved. Chief of the newcomers, after the Huns, were the
Avars, who arrived in the sixth century. The Huns considered these their kinsmen and
equals, and later amalgamated with them after the Avars had, in the eighth century,
been defeated by Charlemagne and had retreated, some to Hungary and others to the
Don country.
From the fall of the Huns until the rise of the Mongols some thousand years later, the
history of central Asia is simply a repetition of the same theme; some obscure sub
tribe would become important, win leadership over the others, and head new
invasions of increasing complexity. The history of southern Russia became extremely
complicated, for the steppes of the Don country served as a terminal point for all but
the most serious of these movements.
After the Avars came the Turks, called
Marriage Is An Important Part Of Their Culture And
Heritage
Marriage Culture For certain countries arranged marriage is an important part of
their culture and heritage. Like in the essay What s Love Got to Do with It? by
Anjula Razdan, Anjula s family that immigrated to America from the country of
India believed in arranged marriage because that was the culture they were a part of
before they left India. In India the grandfather chooses who he thinks is the best
suitable partner for his grandchild, which is nothing like how Americans choose their
life partners. While Americans believe in marrying for love, that might not be the
best way of marriagefor other countries due to familyreactions, success rates, and the
benefits of marriage. The family s reaction is a very important part of marriage.
How your family feels about your soon to be husband or wife helps to show if the
marriage is a good or bad idea. In arranged marriage the family chooses who they
think will benefit you and them the most, and most of the time your parents do
know what is best for you. Even though in arranged marriage you are marrying a
complete stranger, most arranged marriages grow stronger and fall more in love
the longer the marriage lasts and if the couple has had children also plays a role in
if the marriage will last or not. Arranged marriages can be useful by bringing two
families together through marriage or to make an alliance between two families, for

At a time when we know how to aim a space probe directly at Mars and trigger the

she took an opportunity to train women to care of wounded and sick army during
the war. Back then nurses were trained to perform all the housekeeping skills. In
1900 s, there was no set of formal classes for nursing student as compared to today
s higher education. They were assigned to work for 10 12 hours without pay under
the supervision of a physician. There is a huge difference between today s and 1900

In today s era, nurses have more responsibility than before. They are held
responsible for their actions. Today s nursing is based on basic needs of patients.
Critical thinking plays an important role in nursing. Nurses are required to think

has been improved as well in the past years. Now a day hospitals are more
equipped than past years. The science has gone beyond the inventions to cure
untreatable diseases. The art of nursing depends on how to promote wellness, to
prevent illness, to facilitate coping, and to restore health. Nurses can achieve all
those goals by taking a role of caregiver, educator, collaborator, advocate, and
manager (Dewit O Neill. 4th Ed. Pg. 3 4). No one else beside nurses can better
know their patients. Today nursing has divided into different sections. Everyone
has their own role to perform regarding their skills and degree level. According to

the acute stage. Later the graduates were required to take the Licensure examination
after the completion of course. This would allow the LPN s to provide direct patient

American Environmental Movement

cringed at the bitter taste of an apple s skin, due to heavy pesticides? Like you, many
Americans began to socially denounce the mistreatment of their natural world, thus
sweeping an environmental movement across the United States. The modern
environmentalist ideas that help safe guard the nature in our everyday world have
grown into a hugely adopted cultural movement through decades of research and
persuasion. Its influence on America and other parts of the world vastly differs from
society to society, however, the fundamental ideas seem to remain concrete through

The American environmental movement holds itself in high esteem both in the

Stephen Hawking himself recently posted that when true artificial intelligence is

Nature of Money laundering ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Money laundering is the processing of these criminal proceeds to disguise their
illegal origin. This process is of critical importance, as it enables the criminal to enjoy
these profits without jeopardizing their source.
Illegal arms sales, smuggling, and the activities of organized crime, including for
example drug trafficking and prostitution rings, can generate huge sums.
Embezzlement, insider trading, bribery and computer fraud schemes can also
produce large profits and create the incentive to legitimize the ill gotten gains through
money laundering.
When a criminal activity generates substantial profits, the individual or group
involved must find a way to control the funds without attracting attention to the
underlying activity or the persons involved. Criminals do this by disguising the
sources, changing the form, or moving the funds to a place where they are less likely
to attract attention.
As money laundering is a necessary consequence of almost all profit generating
crime, it can occur practically anywhere in the world. Generally, money launderers
tend to seek out areas in which there is a low risk of detection due to weak or
ineffective anti money laundering programmes. Because the objective of money
laundering is to get the illegal funds back to the individual who generated them,
launderers usually prefer to move funds through areas with stable financial systems.

To start, invasive species are any kind of living organisms that isn t native to an
ecosystem and can cause negative effects to that ecosystem and whatever thrives
there. As a matter of fact, they are the reason for the decline of 42% of endangered
and threatened species all around the world. Most forms are plants that poison the

Young adolescents get distracted easily compared with the mature adults. Fancy

Consequently, students would pay more of their attention to the latest fashion instead

majority of their time is spent on the fashion. Without paying attention and making
great efforts, school work can only be abandoned eventually. However, like
Walmsley emphasized, when public schools require their students to wear the

gaining knowledge and preparing for their future. Students learn how to dress

to prepare the way professionals dressed. The next advantage of public school

Coping With Death In Nursing Essay
Abstract
Nurses are prone to deal with death, whether they would prefer it or not. Although,
there is an increase of medical advances to slow the progression of death, it is
inevitable that patients will die. When a patient dies, nurses must deal with the grief
and emotions that encompasses death. Due to the nature of how often nurses deal
with death, it leads to an increase awareness of how they will someday face their own
death. The increase in emotions and grief leads to an overwhelming increase in stress
for nurses. Continuous increase in stress can lead to burn out in nurses. Therefore,
nurses must learn effective coping methods of death to reduce any devastating
emotions and maintain professionalism.

The Importance of Coping with Death in Nursing

Death is inevitable at some point everyone must face it. Whether it is the death of a
family member, friend, or a family pet, people are forced to deal with the death.

physicals problems which can then effect a nurse professionally and personally

Bristol Myers Squibb s deceptive practices were likely to catch up to them. This
occurred when they crossed paths with Sherman who led Apotex at the time. After
everything settled Sherman acknowledged in an interview that he knew the FTC
would reject the proposed agreements made by Bristol Myers Squibb and Sanofi.
He also recognized that their spokesman didn t realize his offer would cause

ignorance and entered the agreement. There is no direct answer to the ethics of
Sherman s strategy. He did not actively participate or even condone Brisol Myers

The global personality of Branson and the admiration is connected to different
reasons. His name is linked to the Virgin brand. Despite this, Branson s name has
also connected with the success of three hundred and fifty different operations
(University of Pennsylvania, 2005). There is a relationship between his personality
and leadership. The same name is linked to the image of his companies. Branson
uses his upbringing so as o influence his style of leadership.
In this regard, it is noted that he was trained to be independent by his parents. At a
tender age of six, he would be asked by his mum to alight from the car and find his

The Human Development Index Is Vast Improvement on...
The critical difference between most development models and human development
index is that most development models exclusively focus on the expansion of
income while the human development index embraces embraces the enlargement of
all human choices economic, political, social and cultural which all affect income.
Comparing countries GNP (or GDP) per capita is the most common way of
assessing their level of development. This model of economic growth was based on
a very weak foundation that was not sustainable over the long term politically,
economically or ethically. Higher per capita income in a country does not always
mean that its people are better off than those in a country with lower income, because
there are many aspects of human... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It does not replace GDP, but it adds considerably to an understanding of the real
position of a society in several aspects, it is multi dimensional.
Poverty promotes vulnerability. By focusing on improving the education, health and
skills of people, it enables people to participate in the economy because there is a
more equitable distribution of income and assets, which results in a growth process
as well as a share of benefits, particularly through employment. Basically, if a country
has already built up considerable human capital then by choosing the correct policies
and frameworks that allow the exploitation of these capabilities, room for progress is
created. Income is influx, consumption that at the end of a period will leave an
individual with the same amount goods as from the beginning of that particular
period, with expectations of future goods. This definition continues to embody my
theory that the development of human capabilities is a source of income. The human
development index represents the presumed link between expanding income and
expanding human choices. In terms of longevity and stability, quality and
distribution of economic growth is more important than the rate of economic growth
over a short period of time. A link between growth and human lives must be created,
government spending on social services, and fiscal policies that allow social safety
nets to be created within a
Tornado Short Story
A Tragic Surprise
The flowers were blooming, the birds were chirping, and the sun was shining on
May 10, 2003. My family and I were about to make a shopping trip to Walmart in
Hannibal, Missouri. My older brother, Darin, decided not to go because he, like
most teenagers , did not want to spend his Saturday night with his parents and
younger brothers and sister. As we pulled out of the driveway dad turned on the
radio to 104.7 KRES Country. Immediately the broadcaster is giving a weather
report saying, There is a likely chance of severe storms this afternoon and a tornado
watch is in effect until 8:00 PM. It was already getting dark in the west and the wind
was starting to pick up. My mom then asks, Do you think we should leave Darin at
home with the storm rolling in? Dad answers saying, I doubt it will amount to
much, he will be fine. Just as we are about to turn onto Highway 36 dad stops the
car. What are you doing? mom asks. Something is telling me to go back and make
him go with us. Dad says. He then turns the 2001 tan minivan around to coax Darin
to go with us. Darin is clearly displeased when dad makes him get into the vehicle.
Why do we have to go to Walmart anyways? he asks. We have to pick out a Mothers
Day gift for grandma. There are also a lot of groceries we need to get. Mom replies.
We arrived in Hannibal in less than 15 minutes and had a couple of Mother s Day
cards picked out in no time. What else do we need . Dad asks mom. Mainly just some
Emergency Response From The Federal Emergency
Management...
This paper will discuss emergency response derived from the Federal Emergency
Management System through the Department of Homeland Security, and the
management system connecting the support entities. Additionally, it will cover the
response to the terrorist attacks of 9/11, and the response to Hurricane Katrina.
Specifically, this paper will look into a few areas where emergency response has
failed and why. Furthermore, it will look at lessons learned from failings associated
with these responses. Finally, this paper will look at what emergency response
methods could improve, and a business design created to improve response efforts in
the future.

There were six original agencies that combined together to create what is
recognized today as FEMA. FEMA is in charge of coordinating and managing relief
efforts for large, and/or lesser scale disaster efforts. When FEMA is notified into
action, it sets in motion a wide range of entities that collaborate together to provide
assistance. Roughly, a few types of assistants that are set into motion would include
financial and physical support.
When FEMA is called into action, they utilize a specific system called the National
Incident Management System or NIMS. The National Incident Management System
is designed as a systematic way of coordination between the public and private
sectors to manage response efforts for several types of incidents to aid in preventing
loss of life and damage. It is also designed as a standard, cooperate tool used for
managing incidents. The concepts contained herein provide for a flexible but
standardized set of incident management practices with emphasis on common
principles, a consistent approach to operational structures and supporting
mechanisms, and an integrated approach to resource management (Department of
Homeland Security, 2015). The NIMS has several functions that work in association
to provide the necessary tools for response efforts. These functions include: NIMS

A Hint of Humor, a Dash of Cinnamon... in the Legal...
In the year 1947, legal conflict arose between Warner Brothers Studio and the
Marx Brothers. It began when the Marx Brothers released the name of one of their
upcoming films, A Night in Casablanca. When Warner Brothers claimed exclusive
rights to the name Casablanca, Groucho Marx sent a letter to Warner Brothers in
response. In spite of a few ambiguities, Marx employs a brilliant and clever
combination of humor and logic to effectively refute Warner Brothers s assertion.
Throughout his letter, Marx uses his ever present wit to dissolve any actual or
imagined hostility in his addressee. For example, in one section, he says I am sure
that the average movie fan could learn tin time to distinguish between Ingrid Birdman

Marx s argument here simply makes sense. Rather than befuddling legal jargon, he
shows that the idea of owning Casablanca is absurd in the same way that owning the
word brothers is absurd. His logic pierces through any uncertainty and effectively
explains his point. He later arrives at the conclusion that this attempt to prevent us
from using the title is the brainchild of some ferret faced shyster, serving a brief
apprenticeship in your legal department (Marx 2). Marx sees this inference as valid,
logical reason for Warner Brothers s interference. As such, he attempts to show the
irrationality of any hindrance to the Marx Brothers planned film title. While Groucho
Marx does have a number of potent and valid arguments, some poorly planned
passages slightly diminish the overall effectiveness of his letter. A recurring issue,
Marx s tendency for rambling distracts the reader from his main goal. His
references to Burbank Studio, Old Man Burbank, and Harry Appelbaum seem to
have no pertinence to the intended subject. However, these are not major issues and
can be ignored in order to find Marx s true purpose. Even more powerful than either
comedy or logic alone are instances in which both of these elements are used together
in harmony with each other. To start off his letter, Marx makes this comment:
Apparently, there is more than one way of conquering a city and holding it as your
own. For example, up to the
The Instability of Female Quixote Essay
The Instability of Female Quixote
In The Female Quixote, the whimsical nature of fiction is not just a barrier to social
acceptance, but an absurdity. Following popular notions of the time, fiction is
presented as a diversion and an indulgence that cannot be reconciled with reality and
threatens the reader s perception of actual experience. The theme is common, as is
evident through the basis of this novel, Cervantes s Don Quixote, and other works
such as Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen. The story is a series of examples of what
not to do, acting as both a cautionary tale and conduct guide. But there is a
fundamental instability in the work resulting from the opposition of the moral and the
means in which it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Falsely believing she is about to be ravished, she imitates the story of Clelia and
attempts to swim across the Thames, causing an illness from which she is scarcely

believes all women who are at least somewhat beautiful and wealthy, therefore fitting
the description of a female protagonist, are the main characters in their own
storyline, and the goal of all men is to deflower them. As a rule, heroines protect
their virtue and men attempt to take it, which is why Arabella believes Miss
Morse and the prostitute in the garden are mislead or forced into losing their
virginity, and why she accuses every male of ulterior motives. The novel s purpose
in doing this is obviously not to demonstrate what acceptable behavior is, but what
it is not. Further proving this are the subtitles of the chapters, which have the tone
of a lesson being taught: Book I, Chapter I, Contains...The bad Effects of a

our Heroine s Extravagance will be thought, perhaps, to be carried to an extravagant

Liberty And Justice For All By Francis Bellamy
...One Nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and Justice for all... (pledge of
allegiance)
Few phrases evoke American patriotism in the same magnitude as the pledge of
allegiance. Written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy, he hopped to inspire americans and
remind people of what makes america great. In the final line liberty and Justice for
all , Bellamy summarized the ideals our country was founded on and what we should
continue to strive for as we grow as we continue into the future. That the government
should preserve the liberty of its people. Liberty is described as the state of being free
from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority.(dictionary). In recent events there

Communism is an exact example of the result of this type of government dogma.
Citizens cannot own property, cannot choose their jobs, and have no say in their way
of life. The government owns everything and allots it to its citizens as it sees
fit(citation). While communism promises equality for all, this does not mean
prosperity for all. Almost all citizens suffer with poorer quality of life, poorer
environments, and often terrible working conditions. Without the motivation, or
proper faculties to work, many communist regimes are toppled by financial ruin,
unable to produce the money to maintain itself. By allowing citizens to choose their
own occupation, production in a county increases massively. the highest functioning
communist country (china) produces just over half as much as the lowest
functioning free nation (Estonia), China only producing $6,807.43 per capita
compared to Estonia s $18,783.04. The economic difference between liberty and
security becomes even more clear cut when compared to countries like the United
Kingdom ($41,787.41 GDP per capita) and the United States ($53,041.98 GDP per
Capita). Forced work managing to barely achieve 1/6 of the economic activity of a

Erving Goffman s Front Stage
Erving Goffman developed the concept that made us understand that life is like
play(drama) which has a never ending and it involves entities of actors, props,
writers etc. which involve scripts where individual acts. He further made us
understands that our socialization is full of learning how to play a role that has
been assigned from other people. In fact, he has brought to our understanding of a
life where people act and socialize which consist of our assigned role from other
people. Goffman believes that whatever we do, we are playing out some role on
the on the stage of life and that comprises of behind the scenes actions and how
people are being guided and directed by other individual and he named it front stage

It is an act that is done without conscious attention. In this era, one has to set a
standard where respect is earned in all things. When you raise your demeanor, E.
Goffman termed it as status, according to him there are three types of status and
these are the following: Ascribed status (One that you are assigned based on
biological factors such as race, sex, or age.) Achieved status (One that is earned
through an individual s own effort.) Master status (Status that has priority over all
other statuses and generally determines a person s overall position in society. The
most common master statuses are those based on gender and race.) According to
Goffman, we use various mechanisms, called sign vehicles, to present ourselves to
others. The most commonly employed sign vehicles are the following: Social
setting, appearance, the manner of interacting. The social setting is the physical
place where interaction occurs. It could be a doctor s examination room, a hallway,
someone s home, or a professor s office. How we arrange our spaces, and what we
put in them, conveys a lot of information about us. A person who lives in a large
home with security guards, attack dogs, and motion detectors conveys the message
that he or she is very important, wealthy, and powerful, and probably that uninvited
visitors should stay away. On the other hand, the owner of a house with no fence, lots
of lights, and a welcome mat would seem much more inviting
The Impact Of Immigration On The United States And
Canada...
Chapter One: Introduction to Investigation
Immigration to North American nations has been a staple process for countries like
the United States and Canada. Without immigrants, these two nations would not have
become as large and successful as they are today. However, easy and encouraged
immigration has not always been a constant for these two countries. Throughout the
centuries, there have been issues and disputes over immigration for particular
ethnicities and groups of people which continue even to this day. One example being
the current dispute on Mexican immigrants residing or entering the United States and
whether it requires heavier government intervention. A similar problem beginning
almost two centuries ago has already occurred in both the US and Canada, and was
resolved in extreme manners similar to some of those proposed American
politicians. As following a popular quote by George Santayana, Those who do not
learn history are doomed to repeat it, by examining past events similar to those seen
today, those involved in the issue can make better judgements based on what has and
has not worked in the past.
The aforementioned problem was one of the largest past uproars concerning
American and Canadian immigration, which was with the sudden flow of Chinese
immigrants to North America in the 1800s to the 1920s. Most of whom hailed from
Southern China, poor Chinese immigrants that journeyed to the United States to
secure their share in the American Dream, often
Case Study of Callaway Golf Company Essays
Case Study of Callaway Golf Company
Section I. Summary
Callaway Golf Company began to take form in 1983, after Ely Reeves Callaway Jr.
sold Callaway Vineyard and Winery for a $9 million dollar profit. Shortly after the
sell of the winery, Callaway ventured in to the golf equipment industry and bought 50
percent of Hickory Stick USA. Callaway knew from the very beginning that this
company s profits were limited as long as the product line wasn t changing.
Callaway noticed that most golf equipment had changed very little since the 1920s
and believed that , due to the difficulty of the game of golf, recreational golfers
would be willing to invest in high tech, premium priced clubs if such clubs could

Helmstetter and his engineering team were very important to the execution of
Callaway Golf s competitive strategy. Callaway Golf Company consistently
outspent its rivals in the industry on R D which allowed it to continually beat its
competitors to the market with new innovations. (P c210) In 1994, Callaway Golf
opened the Helmstetter Test Center located a mile away from the main campus.
The Helmstetter Test Center had two primary uses; it provided an ideal place to
custom fit clubs for the touring pros who used Callaway equipment, and it allowed
Callaway R D staff to test new products in the developmental stage. The development
of new products at Callaway Golf Company not only included the research and
development staff but also the sales and advertising staff. These teams worked hand
in hand together. When the R D would come up with a new product idea, the sales
and advertisement staff would look over this idea and recommend changes based on
the current market interests.
Callaway s customer service department was viewed as a critical component of the
company s overall level of differentiation. (p. c215) Even before handling any
customer service inquiry, each customer service representative received eight weeks
of training since the entire customer service staff was empowered to make a final
decision regarding a consumer or retailer complaint or warranty claim. In other golf
First Time Homebuyer
Have you ever dreamed about buying your own house? Do you think your ready to
sign that dotted line? Well let me tell you, buying a house can be a long and
complicated process. It can be stressful for anyone let alone a first time homebuyer.
Most new homebuyers are excited to finally have a place of their own, but rarely are
they prepared for when that day comes. There are important things you should know
and do before buying a house.
The first important thing you should know is that your credit score plays a hug role
in getting mortgage. All homebuyers must have a minimum credit score of 620 to
qualify for mortgage loan. Your credit score also determines the banks risk factor.
Banks and lenders see individuals with good credit score as low risk factors. Having
a good credit score will often give you more options in lenders.
Another important thing a first time homebuyer needs to know is the role that down

your mortgage payments. The higher ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many banks out there that deal with mortgages loans and they all have
different terms. Some banks have stricter terms than other such as early payoff
penalty. Other banks may offer special promotions such as The U.S Department of
Veteran Affairs often requires zero down payment or mortgage insurance. You
should ask friends and family members what bank they are working with and what
the pros and cons to those banks. Make sure you do all research possible and then
choose the lender that works for you best.
In conclusion, having a good credit score and money saved up for a down payment as
well as choosing the right lenders will make the process of buying a house less
stressful. You should take your time and fully understand all that goes into buying a
house before signing that dotted

Religious Visit Paper
When given the opportunity, I am usually open to and enjoy stepping out of my
comfort zone. This project allowed me to do just that. For my religious visit, I
visited Shaare Emeth, Reformed Jewish Synagogue on Saturday June 20, 2015 for
their Shabbat Morning Worship Service at 11 a.m. It is located at 11645 Ladue Rd,
St. Louis, MO 63141.
The synagogue was an extremely modern looking building, and in my opinion
looked like most churches that I have been to and am more familiar with. Pulling
into the parking lot, there were newer vehicles and luxury vehicles, which made me
believe most of the members were of a middle to high socioeconomic class. There was

Everybody looked very cheerful and benevolent. It felt like one big family
gathering. We entered the synagogue and there were plush chairs and carpet
embellished with nature like colors and leaf designs. The roof was high, there was
a lot of light, gold accents, a stained glass window, wooden beams that were
exposed, as well as a wooden bureau, which housed the Torah. There were also
candles and podium/table from which the rabbi spoke.
At the front, there were three Rabbis; two male and one female. This was the first
evident sign that this temple was reformed, on the grounds that in Orthodox and
some Conservative Judaism, leadership by a female is not permitted. Each of the
three rabbis wore the talit, and one of them was the Cantor. He played a guitar and
sang a song and the style reminded me of the praise and worship songs we sing at
my church. He continued singing as people found seats. The service started with
some singing in Hebrew. The lighting of the candles for Shabbat occurred next
along with the reading of a blessing. Some more readings and songs followed that.
A decent amount of the service was in Hebrew, particularly the singing, however
there were also times that English was also spoken. Since the books were in
Hebrew, which reads from right to left, the books opened in reverse. This took some
getting used to; however, there were English translations. The following segment of
the service is what I describe as a parade of the Torah. The Torah,
The Internet And The Renaissance Age
The Renaissance age started in Italy, specifically in Florence. The economy started to
change during the 13th hundred: trade, commerce and banking grew. The Internet, on
the other hand, was invented in 1969 by a man called J.C.R Licklider. Changes
Internet did to our economy are basically employment, payments and time value.
Since the world began, history has repeated itself in extraordinary and also horrible
ways. A positive example of this is the growth and improvements in both the
Renaissanceculture and the Internet made to the global economy.
During Renaissance, italian cities became more productive and a developed creative
thinking. Urban areas were commercialised and also the price of commodities were
fixed. The italian culture was prospered and the foreign exchange market, insurance,
stock companies, international banking and government debt were developed. The
northern part of the country acted as the main trade point for silk, wool, silver, cloth,
spices and armour. Venicewas mostly known for book printing, which made that city
very important.
Commerce was not enough to improve wealth. Therefore some merchants also
became bankers. All banks became very important and they created a network in the
middle ages that served to pay for massive people such as princes. The ... Show more

Selfish Desires In Everyman And The Bacchae By Euripides
The two plays Everyman by an Anonymous play write and The Bacchae by
Euripides both have main characters that have selfish desires that involve the
public joining them in their own journey to fulfill their own greed. In The Bacchae
Dionysus is the protagonist, a selfish demigod who wishes to enact his revenge for
the slandering of his and his Mother s name. In Everyman the play revolves around
a character named Everyman, who represents the everyday men and women, and
his or her selfish wish for someone to follow him or her to speak in front of God.
These characters selfish desires are the focus of their plays and at the end of their
respective plays truly define their character for either better or for worse. Dionysus,
while being a selfish demigod throughout his play, is characterized solely this way
because he was denied his birth title and this lead his mother to being ridiculed and
laughed at for truths that people claimed were lies. His main goal was to refute
that slander spoken by [his] mother s sister which expresses he wanted to clear the
name his mother s name that was misguided (line 32). Being a demigod who has
used his power to make the women of Thebes crazed of mind as well as being
compelled to wear [his] orgies livery which shows how he abuses his power
(Euripides 41 42). While his goal was positive for his character his actions were
villainous and destroyed the Kingdom of Thebes solely because he wanted revenge
for his mother and the lies that were

  • 2. Fire Island, A Historical Overview Essay Fire Island, A Historical Overview Rhythmic waves, high dunes, ancient maritime forests, historic landmarks and glimpses of wildlife Fire Island has been a special place for diverse plants, animals and people for centuries The origin of Fire Island s name is not quite clear; there are many stories as to where the Island got its name. It is thought that its Native American name was Sictem Hackey, which translated means Land of the Secatogues , an Indian tribe in Bay Shore, New York. It was also part of what was called the Seal Islands. Some historians have also suggested that the name Fire derived from a misinterpretation of the Dutch word vijf ( five ) or in another version vier ( four ) referring to the number of islands... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fire Island remained in the Smith family up until 1900. Prior to 1900 there were no year round residents on the Island with the exception of the Lighthouse keeper and a few fish factory workers and a handful of squatters. Other than the Surf Hotel there were only a few buildings that were used during the summer as bars and restaurants for those who would sail across the bay for a day at the beach and the occasional clambake. The first large house ever to be built was constructed in 1795 in Cherry Grove by Jeremiah Smith, Smith was believed to have set fires to lure ships to sand bars just off shore and kill the crews The Surf Hotel which was located just east of the Lighthouse was an expansive building built on 120 acres of land that David Sammis owned, or so he thought a battle over the ownership of this land went on for years in court with Sammis winning. Sammis built the hotel in 1856 and by 1880 the hotel boasted rooms for 1500 guests. The Surf was host to many politically connected players in government be it local, city, state, and some federal, as well as the well off from the region. The Southside Rail Road soon to be known as the Long Island Rail Road came to Babylon in 1867 and the town was dubbed the gateway to Fire Island, which has since been bestowed on the town of Bay Shore. The guests of the hotel would take a stage coach for the four mile journey to the Bay Shore docks. It is assumed by a
  • 3. Society During The Era Of The Third Reich By James Baldwin Throughout the course of history it is evident that the values of society have dramatically changed over the years. The values that people posses change depending on what s occurring around the world at the time, whether a fierce, bloody war resulting from a calamity or a time of peace and renaissance. The choices people make can either help change society for the better or they can help bring society down. Many different factors lead to the events that can change entire societies such as educationor discrimination, both of which can have negative repercussions. One way society can change is through the education system. Students are highly perceptive and can easily pick up on the tendencies and opinions of others. In his article, James Baldwin ... Rosa Parks became tired of the segregation and the fact that she had to sit in the back of the bus to make room for the white people, so one day she refused to get out of her seat when the bus driver told her to, leading to her getting arrested and starting the freedom movement. Martin Luther King Jr., was an American Baptist minister who was also tired of the segregation and wanted to live in a world where the whites and blacks could both be treated equally. He began leading non violent freedom movements ending legal segregation, changing the way society lived for many years, and making history. In a Talk to Teachers Baldwin explained that if he was a teacher, he would teach his students that there are currently very few standards in this country which are worth a man s respect. That it is up to him to change these standards for the sake of the life and the health of the country, which is an important thing for teachers to do, because while he doesn t change society as a whole, he is changing the way this kid sees the world and they way he is going to live his life and changing the perspective of one person makes all the difference. Baldwin also states that In order for me to live, I decided very early that some mistake had been made somewhere. I was not a nigger even though you called me one. But if I was a nigger in your eyes, there was something about you

  • 5. Winter s Bone Analysis Winter s Bone, to me, is a sad, dreary, story about family struggles, drugs, poverty, and courage. The plot is pretty straight forward, Ree has to find her father before losing her house while trying to take care of her two brothers and mentally helpless mother. But her struggles along the way is what makes this book dark and interesting. It is quite astonishing what people are capable of when their survival or way of life is threatened. So far, I don t think I can call Ree the hero yet, because she is just walking around looking for clues and getting assaulted. Although I know she is not a villain either. So what role does she play in this novel? She is strong, stubborn and takes pain without complaining, and as far as I have read she is a survivor in this story. The setting... Not only does Ozark fit the dark and dreary story line but it also is where the author, Daniel Woodrell, is from which adds more meaning and truth to the people and scenery for the reader during the story. The novel is written in first person, Ree being the narrator thought the book. I can understand her thoughts throughout the story and how she feels in every situation. I believe Daniel Woodrell has told the story through the eyes of a teenage girl because the tendency of Ozark women is to speak and apologize for their irrational and violent men. The women don t have much say and have to stay under the radar. While Ree does the opposite, she goes up against invincible forces armed only with savviness, courage, stubbornness, and a willingness to get beaten. He is able to convey that all women should be strong and not willing to back down. Woodrell was also able to reveal how men treat women in the Ozarks and the hardships women have with taking care of the home and their family. Ree was left to take care

  • 7. What Makes Augustine s Confessions Memorable Maddie Yamona Western Civilization II Mr. Horswell 29 September, 2017 What makes Augustine s Confessions memorable Augustine s Confessions was a major piece of work that heavily influenced the religion back in his times. Augustine s Confessions is still read today because of the relatability it shows in aspects of depression, love, and finding your identity. Throughout the book Augustine goes through his life and the decisions he has made and how they made him either a better or worse person. We can use Augustine s Confessions as a tool to also evaluate our own lives and decisions because of the way he judges himself and what he considers to be the best and worst things he has done and why. Augustine goes through trying to find himself through things of the world and then finally realizes why he can not when he steps back and looks at the fact that he must first find himself in God. Augustine finds himself going through hard times throughout the Confessions and this includes the struggle with depression. Augustine loses one of his very close friends and begins to become depressed, I raged and sighed and wept and worried, I could not rest, I could not think intelligent. (Augustine. 64). When Augustine becomes depressed he says that he does not want to be around people and people can relate to this because when people are upset they want time to themselves to think not time around other people. Another example of when Augustine is depressed is when Augustine realizes how

Wuthering Heights A New Gothic Wuthering Heights A New Gothic Wuthering Heights is considered one of the greatest Gothic novels written by Emily Bronte, the only novel published under the name Ellis Bell. It is a tragic love story that presents the consuming passion between Heathcliff and Catherine. These two characters live under the pressures of social class and gender inequality. One of the classic features of Gothic literature is the supernatural. Bronte creates that atmosphere to inspire the readers about what it can be in that landscape. It is an atmosphere of isolation, imprisonment, violence, and revenge. Mr. Lockwood gives his exclamation on the first page of the novel that he says, In all England, I do not believe that I could have fixed on a situation completely removed from the stir society (3). In addition, Mr. Lockwood expresses his fear of travelling the moors in a stormy and wild weather. The shift of the weather in the moorland suggests the occurrence of a serious and dangerous disaster. For example, a second violent storm occurs when Heathcliff departs from Wuthering Heights. Bronte states that the weather was a very dark evening for summer: the clouds appeared inclined to thunder, and I said we had better all sit down; the approaching rain would be certain to bring him home without further trouble... and that the storm came rattling over the Heights in full fury (54). The surrounding environment and stormy weather create a truly Gothic setting. One of the classical features of Gothic literature is the supernatural scene that is expressed differently within the novel. Bronte uses some of the gothic elements in her narrative and makes some of these elements inexplicit wither it is a dream or a supernatural event. William Blake s poem The Chimney Sweeper gives us a look into the unfortunate lives of 18th century London boys whose primary job was to clear chimneys of the soot that accumulated on its interior; boys that were named climbing boys or chimney sweepers. Blake, a professional engraver, wrote this poem (aabb rhyme), in the voice of a young boy, an uneducated chimney sweeper. This speaker is obviously a persona, a fictitious character created by Blake, as it is apparent that he wasn t a child or a chimney sweeper at the time he wrote this poem. The voice of the story, the young boy, in the seventh verse showed compassion for the new climbing boy and by doing this he made visible to us that the real child in him had not died, that although he had to work in conditions that were not suitable for a boy his age, he still kept his humanity. In the poem s next 2 stanzas the narrator speaks about a dream that Tom Dacre had the same day his youth was taken from him. He had dreamt that sweepers whom he knew where all of them locked up in coffins of black. The black color of these coffins means, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, seriously bad or unfortunate, associated with severely bad conditions or misfortune. The coffins, which are a container in which a dead body is placed for a burial (OED), represent all of them being trapped in this miserable black world where, ironically, children worked to make money for adults. The entire dream is influenced by Tom s fear of being trapped in this hell for all his life. Later, in the fifth stanza an Angel appeared in Tom s dream that opened up the coffins and set them free of their misfortune. This angel that freed them can be considered as an omen, a sign that shows how something, good or bad, will happen in the future. Tom ran down a flat expanse of land with the sweepers where they had fun and washed themselves up. The words bright and shine Blake used in verses thirteen

He was one of the first artists to experiment with blueprint paper in the early fifties, and then he began to incorporate the everyday found objects and daily media images from the press, he wanted to act in the gap between art and life and found mediums that best did that for him whether it be photographs, (he often would have a camera on him and built up an extensive library of images from his travels through life), magazine clippings, junk, found used objects or images from history books. The Dada movement formed during the First World War clearly affected Robert s work; they promoted the use of collage and assemblage, in particular artists such as Kurt Schwitters and Hannah Hoch as well as artists of the movement such as Man Ray being the first to adopt photographic materials for artistic purposes. Dadaists broke down the boundaries between art and everyday life, for they were concerned with provoking the public into reacting to their activities and Rauschenberg too did not want to create enduring masterpieces for an elite but to further a perpetual process of discovery in which everyone could participate It was in 1962 that Rauschenberg picked up the silk screening process and both he and Andy Warhol explored this new technique together. Thucydides wrote the unfinished History of the Peloponnesian War. In a period with scarce evidence available, Thucydides single narrative acts as the sole artefact that provides information regarding the war. His History narrates the Peloponnesian Warbetween Athens and Sparta, and also recounts the foreign relations military and diplomatic activities of Athens and various Greek states during the fifth century BC. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thucydides depicts Pericles s funeral oration early on in his History, which honored Athenians strength and sense of duty as well as believing in the greatness of Athens. Everything Pericles spoke of in the oration glorified Athens achievements, aiming to raise morale during the state of war. In his praises, Pericles acknowledges Athens as an exemplar state to other Greeks and declares in short, I [Pericles] say that as a city we are the school of Hellas, while I doubt if the world can produce a man who, where he has only himself to depend upon, is equal to so many emergencies, and graced by so happy a versatility, as the Athenian (Thuc. 2.41). One may argue that the oration illustrates the epitome of Thucydides support for Athens, as he did not record the speech verbatim and could have instilled his own views. Nevertheless, as demonstrated in other instances, Thucydides is just as critical of Athens as praising. In the Melian Dialogue that took place in 416 BC, Athens essentially imposed its vast power on the small island of Melos. Athenians threatened Melians to surrender and pay tribute, or suffer the repercussions as they eloquently stated, in terms of practicality the dominant exact what they can and the weak concede what they must (Thuc. 5.89). The Melians refusal to obey to Athens demands culminated to a siege that ended in the Athenian assembly voting to mercilessly execute all the men and enslave all women and children. The once glorified portrayal of Athens succumbs to a decline of moral values and transforms into one of an oppressive state with an entitled mentality to conquer other Greeks, comparable to the traits of tyrants in their hunger to acquire more power. Here, Thucydides made the conscious choice to relate two drastically different speeches that paints Athens in both a

They cannot help that they are gay, they were born that way. Being who you are is especially important in order to feel accepted as a person. When a patient leaves the care of the anesthetist after an operation, they wake up under the supervision of a post operative nurse. These health care professionals work in recovery rooms to ensure that post operative patients, who often wake up in physiologically fragile states, will be expertly and continuously supervised. Basic Responsibilities Post operative nurses have two basic responsibilities: transfer and monitor patients after surgeries. After surgeries, post operative nurses assess the patient s condition and determine if they are able to be moved to the post anesthesia care unit (PACU). If the vital signs are instable or if the surgical team encounters problems, the patient may need to remain in the operating room. Once the doctor determines that the patient can safely be moved, they will be transferred to the PACU for continued care under the watchful eyes of a post operative nurse. But that she is trying to teach the reader a lesson by telling them not to stray from God when times are tough, and not to move from salvation. On the contrary, Bradstreet was far from being kidnapped. Because Bradstreet had different experiences than Rowlandson, the themes and messages behind her poetry is different than Mary s. When we view the Hunnish inroad into Europe in the light of the total context of Old World history, it ceases to be a strange inruption of hideous and invincible barbarians darting out of nowhere, as it at first appeared to the Byzantines and Romans. The Huns were a people who had been exposed to a high civilization that of China; they were cultured if illiterate, and in every sense the match of the frightened adversaries whom they met in Europe. When we examine the details of these invasions, we see that it was not one simple inroad, but a series of them in which a perplexing confusion of names is involved. Chief of the newcomers, after the Huns, were the Avars, who arrived in the sixth century. The Huns considered these their kinsmen and equals, and later amalgamated with them after the Avars had, in the eighth century, been defeated by Charlemagne and had retreated, some to Hungary and others to the Don country. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Money laundering is the processing of these criminal proceeds to disguise their illegal origin. This process is of critical importance, as it enables the criminal to enjoy these profits without jeopardizing their source. Illegal arms sales, smuggling, and the activities of organized crime, including for example drug trafficking and prostitution rings, can generate huge sums. Embezzlement, insider trading, bribery and computer fraud schemes can also produce large profits and create the incentive to legitimize the ill gotten gains through money laundering. When a criminal activity generates substantial profits, the individual or group involved must find a way to control the funds without attracting attention to the underlying activity or the persons involved. Criminals do this by disguising the sources, changing the form, or moving the funds to a place where they are less likely to attract attention. As money laundering is a necessary consequence of almost all profit generating crime, it can occur practically anywhere in the world. Generally, money launderers tend to seek out areas in which there is a low risk of detection due to weak or ineffective anti money laundering programmes. It began when the Marx Brothers released the name of one of their upcoming films, A Night in Casablanca. When Warner Brothers claimed exclusive rights to the name Casablanca, Groucho Marx sent a letter to Warner Brothers in response. In spite of a few ambiguities, Marx employs a brilliant and clever combination of humor and logic to effectively refute Warner Brothers s assertion. Marx s argument here simply makes sense. Rather than befuddling legal jargon, he shows that the idea of owning Casablanca is absurd in the same way that owning the word brothers is absurd. His logic pierces through any uncertainty and effectively explains his point. He later arrives at the conclusion that this attempt to prevent us from using the title is the brainchild of some ferret faced shyster, serving a brief apprenticeship in your legal department (Marx 2). Marx sees this inference as valid, logical reason for Warner Brothers s interference. As such, he attempts to show the irrationality of any hindrance to the Marx Brothers planned film title. While Groucho Marx does have a number of potent and valid arguments, some poorly planned passages slightly diminish the overall effectiveness of his letter. A recurring issue, Marx s tendency for rambling distracts the reader from his main goal. His references to Burbank Studio, Old Man Burbank, and Harry Appelbaum seem to have no pertinence to the intended subject. However, these are not major issues and can be ignored in order to find Marx s true purpose. Even more powerful than either comedy or logic alone are instances in which both of these elements are used together in harmony with each other. To start off his letter, Marx makes this comment: Apparently, there is more than one way of conquering a city and holding it as your own. For example, up to the
