Ap English Short Stories
It was early in the morning: Ruby left the tent, bleary eyed, and made his way through the field.
Unbound by the decaying fence, the cows had strayed to the far end of the clearing. Ruby hopped
the fence and began towards them; knowing the ritual, they stayed put. Now that he had breakfast,
and lunch if the milk lasted, Ruby began on the path that lead through the woods. He could hear
the larks calling; boasting, he imagined, to each other that they, too, were awake. Besides them it
was quite. Coming out into the sunlight once again, Ruby paused and took a look around. Exactly
as he had left it. He started his daily chore, picking through the rouble, looking for bits of metal,
jewelry, and tools. Despite this having been a miningsettlement, Ruby could find very little... Show

A ship might, at any day, appear over the horizon, and seek shelter. The island, to those unaware
of it s history, looks quaint and comfortable. It was in a way, a nice place to visit. Long left by
civilisation, nature has reclaimed all but the houses, now standing in a sea of grass. Birds flock
to the island, knowing they will be undisturbed. Despite it s small size, it now has a population
of deer, who must have washed ashore and made the hard journey from mainland. If it is a short
stop, I doubt one would be more than bothered by the bodies. But it made sleeping overnight
impossible. Even from the boathouse and the docks, one can see a path of wreckage: lighthouse,
once proud, is decrepit, and risks its integrity with a gaping hole in it s side. The main building,
moldy and listing, has a corresponding hole in it s roof. At the bottom of this path lies a
skeleton, axe in hand, looking up at the stars. Ruby didn t care whether the island was quaint,
however. Nor if it was haunted. He wanted to leave because he was bored. He wanted to leave
because he was tired of the same day in and day out. Most of all, he wanted to leave because he was

Gasoline Incident
An accelerant inside a plastic one gallon container. The accelerant was identified as gasoline.
The fires were being set in the early morning between 2 am and 6 am. The homes were all single
family, with the fires being started either one the front or back porch. There was a cloth wick
that was tied onto to the plastic gallon container. This gave the arsonist plenty of time to get
away. There were remnants of plastic shopping bags that were found by ATF in the debris. The
plastic bags were how the arsonist carried the gallon of gasoline and avoided being detected.
Over the next two weeks, there were four more fires all within a few miles of each other. These
events had been going on for between one and two years before police caught on to the pattern.

The police got in contact with the manufactures of the black bag (a piece was left unscathed at
one of the scenes) who then said there were only two stores in the Washington D.C area who
purchased them. The police individualized each bag with an alpha numeric thermal chip that
would survive future fires. A pair of military dress pants were identified by a search dog with
having gasoline one them. They were discarded at one of the fire scenes. The skin cells from the
pants matched those of the wick and the hair found on the incendiary device. Fire investigators
contacted the Navel yard and spoke with investigators to try to find leads. It turns out they were
also searching for a serial arsonist who was setting fires to cars in the military parking lot. A
surveillance tape showed Sweatt leaving the scene in his car. Police were able to track down
Sweatt through his license plate. Sweatt was questioned by police, providing a DNA sample of his
own. When Thomas Sweatt learned about the other DNA evidence the police had against him, he
confessed to the fires some dating back 25 years

Goals And Value Chain Analysis Of Dunkin Donuts
Dunkin Donuts Value Chain Analysis Even though Dunkin Donuts is an international business,
each individual store has its own set of goals and missions to achieve success. This is also
known as the value chain, which is the process or activities by which a company adds value to
an article, including production, marketing, and the provision of after sales service. (Oxford)
After observing and working for Dunkin Donuts, the business success is primarily based off the
happiness of their loyal customers and smooth teamwork of their employees. This particular
Dunkin Donuts on Western Avenue in Peoria, Illinois is faced with a lot of challenges, but with
the right approach to these challenges can make their business even more successful. A mission
statement is a formal summary of the aims and values of a company, organization or individual.
(Oxford) Mission statements are important in business because it can be used to determine a
company s short and long term goals. Intelligent business owners use mission statements to remind
its employees why the company exists and how the company will be or continue to be successful.
Dunkin Donuts mission and vision statement is simple. It is to deliver high quality food and
beverages quickly, affordably and conveniently in a welcoming environment. Dunkin Donuts
being a fast food chain, has been relied on by its customers to provide coffee and breakfast at a
fast pace. This is how each individual Dunkin Donuts gains and keeps customers. When the staff
are all on the same page, the business runs smoothly, and customers remain happy, resulting in
repeat customers. Word travels fast and so does the coffee, with that in mind. Keeping customers
happy and meeting their needs will keep this business striving. Strengths, Weaknesses,
Opportunities and Threats, also known as SWOT, is apart of every business. Businesses must
embrace and adapt to SWOT in order to make them successful. This could be by taking
constructive criticism through surveys by customers or changing things based on statistics. SWOT
is how a business will either fail or prosper, and good businesses know how to use it to their
advantage. Dunkin Donuts has strengths just because of their name and

RTX Response Paper
We performed a retrospective chart review of clinical data already collected in the process of
treatment of pediatric patients at our institution. Records of patients between the ages of 0 18
years who received RTX infusions for a diagnosis of steroid dependent or steroid resistant
nephrotic syndrome or glomerulonephritis between August 1, 2009 and December 31, 2012 were
reviewed. We collected data on the disease status (like renal histology, duration of nephrotic
syndrome, number of relapses) and treatment status (like immunosuppressive treatments used
before RTX, number of courses of RTX) of the patients. RTX response was measured at 1, 3, 6, 12,

challenged Abbott for the Party leadership, and won the subsequent ballot by 10 votes. Turnbull
was sworn in as Prime Minister the following day, and formed the Turnbull Government.
Turnbull became Prime Minister and Leader of the Liberal Party of Australia after he defeated the
incumbent Tony Abbott at the September 2015 Liberal leadership ballot. He is leading the

There are many styles of leadership that have been identified by scholars. For the purpose of this
report following will be discussed.
Transformational Leadership Style The transformational leadership can be defined as a process
where leaders and their followers raise one another to higher levels of morality and motivation
(Burns 2010 ) . Transformational leaders have clear set of goals and motivate the followers to look
beyond their own interest and achieve these common set of goals and these goals are
communicated to the followers well advanced. These leaders are highly skilled in people

Delian League Research Paper
The Delian League is a modern term for the group of Greek cities that formed an organisation
which was referred to in the fifth century BC as The Athenians and their Allies . The aim of the
Delian League was originally to form an alliance for an offensive war against Persia and to liberate
the Greeks in Asia Minor from Persian control. Thucydides wrote in The Peloponnesian War
, the
aim of the League was to compensate themselves for their losses by ravaging the territory of the
King of Persia. While many factors contributed to the slow transformation of the Delian Leagueinto
the Athenian Empire, a large part of the change derives from Athens leadership of the League and
their eventual use of the other states for private matters. The fulfillment of the aim of the Delian
League demonstrates the turning point from the League to the empire.
The name alone is an indication of Athens power within the League, and originally Athens was
chosen for leadership by the other states in the League and accepted as a leader by outsiders,
including Sparta. It was natural that leadership should fall to Athens at the formation of the
League for many reasons, mostly because Sparta was deemed unfit to lead by the other states. The
rigid Spartan way of life was useful in battle but proved to be ineffective to direct the freer states.

Stereotyping, Discrimination and Prejudice in the Media
The movie that I have chosen to watch for this particular bonus assignment is called The Freedom
Writers . The movie is about a new teacher and the challenges that she faces in order to make the
students in her English class, who come from different ethnics backgrounds and who most hate
each other, get along. And, of course, by the end of the movie, she is successful in doing so.
Racism played a major role in this movie, seen as a negative aspect in the children s attitudes and
mentalities. Racism is defined as negative behaviour on an incorrect assumption that one race is
inherently superior to others. This is one of the many forms of discrimination which is defined as
unfair actions directed against people based on their race, gender, ... Show more content on

When the teacher asked the class who knew what the Holocaust was, only one white person out
of the entire body of students knew. That is when she realized that the students had very little
knowledge about the outside world. This greatly related to Gordon W. Allport s theory. Allport
was a psychologist who used questionnaires and interviews to measure the strength of individual
prejudice, and who found a correlation between higher education and experiences such as
knowledge about cultures, traveling, etc, and tolerance or the acceptance of differences between
people. In this case, because the students were not taught and were unaware that there were
similar cases to theirs, only on a greater scale, they continued to prejudge, and discriminate
against each other. Later on in the movie though, because they begin to travel more and gain
more knowledge about the outside world, they become more aware and realize that they should
change. In addition, three other theorists ideas play a role in the movie. The first one is Frances
Aboud, who believes that children first learn prejudice from the media, family, friends, etc, when
they are bombarded with negative images. In this movie, the girl Eva is a perfect example of how
she changed the way she sees people. Since she was a little girl, her father used to tell her that she
had to fight for their people as the ancestors fought against

Reverse Mortgage Case
I think I got the idea from some news, that the reverse mortgage loans market in USA has grown a
lot and will also grow in the future. The reason is, that seniors want to live as comfortably as they
did during the years, when they had better incomes.
Another idea was, that the mortgage niche is a high paying AdSense niche. So I had two reasons to
try to make money from home.
1. The Market Is Growing And Waited For My Business Plan.
I have never tried to market something, which I do not understand. The reverse mortgage market, I
mean the need among the target group, was clear to me from the very beginning. It represented a
chance to make money from home, at least to try my best.
The Need.
It is simple. Seniors, who are age 62 or over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The homes can be fully paid or the debt is minimal.
The Online Market.
It was quite easy to judge the online need just by doing the keyword research. It showed that
seniors are seeking information about these products actively and this means, that doing an
effective SEM, I would have a chance to draw enough visitors into my blog and to make money
from home with AdSense and the affiliate links.
2. The Launch Of A New Niche Blog Needed Many Mediums.
I saw the content of my blog as the most important success factor in the new niche. Fortunately my
niche is narrow enough, which helps to keep the content related.
I also hope, that the niche is not too narrow and that there is money in it. The keyword research
showed, that there will be.
When launching a new blog in the net, there are two challengies. First, to write enough useful
content and then to get enough related blog visitors to be able to make money from home.
The first thing was to start posting. At the same time I submitted the blog into the main search
engines plus to some over 100 others. The blog is now two weeks old, and it is not yet

Jfk Inaugural Address Rhetorical Analysis
On a cold January afternoon in 1961 John Fitzgerald Kennedy delivered one of the shortest but
most empowering inaugural addresses. Kennedy won by the smallest margin ever and to this day
was the youngest and the only Roman Catholic ever elected U.S. president. With the victory of
World War II behind the US and the fear of nuclear warfare with the Soviet Union looming
Kennedy faced a difficult task. Kennedy was faced with the task of convincing the American
people that he was fit to be leader. John F. Kennedys use of rhetoricdevices and persuasive appeals
made in his Inaugural Address convince the citizens of his ability to be chief executive. One of
the rhetoric devices used often in Kennedy s speech was the use of parallel structures. A parallel
structure also called parallelism is defined as the repetition of a chosen grammatical form within
a sentence. An example of a parallel structure would be To show kindness is praiseworthy; to
show hatred is evil . Some examples of parallel structures in Kennedy s inaugural address speech
are: For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of humanpoverty and all
forms of human life. , If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few
who are rich. and Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate . Kennedy
used parallel structures to align related ideas and to make it more understandable for both readers
and listeners. By using a parallel

When a child is growing up, they go through many changes. When they go through these changes in
their early life, they expect to be guided or to be helped by their parents. Before the child attend

understanding within their parents. This means, they are very comfortable with approaching them
with difficulties he/she face throughout life or even personal information he/she need to be

As in STDs, they teach the children different types of sexually transmitted disease, how they
occur, their symptoms, and the image of the disease. The only problem with that is they do not
explain the chance of risks engaging in sexual activities. They do not provide the students with the
fact that one in four sexually transmitted disease cases diagnosed each year involves teenagers. As
for pregnancies, they do discuss the risk of becoming pregnant. But, they do not discuss what
affect a pregnancy at such a young age could bring. Or even, how much of a life changing situation
it is.
On the other hand, many believe sex education should be a high priority in schools. Their beliefs
leads them to think the effectiveness of this material being taught in schools could reduce teen
pregnancies, the rate of STDs, and also would not increase sexual activity. To support, there are

You should start by reading your recipe carefully and understand it. Make sure you have all the
ingredients needed to bake the cookie. The most important thing in baking is care and accuracy
is a must for the cookie to be perfect. Your cooking tools should be good and use standard
measuring spoons and cups. The pan should be the correct size, and then prepare it as instructed
in the recipe. Your ingredients should be top quality, fresh and set according to the recipe. If the
recipe states that an ingredient should be at room temperature, make sure it is that way. Baking
powder can be tested for potency by adding it to hot water; it should bubble if it is good. Mix
baking powder to the flour before adding the other wet ingredients to ensure even distribution of
the powder. All ingredients should be at room temperature for perfect cookies unless the recipe
states otherwise. Measure your ingredients carefully by use of measuring cups or spoons. The
oven should be preheated for about 10 or 15mins before starting to bake the cookies. The
temperature of the oven should be exactly as stated in the recipe because too hot or too cold oven

Virtualization (DHL): Virtualization is a software technology that makes it possible to run multiple

Gatsby Is Perfect
The American Dream is something every American wants to have in life, even those outside of

Analysis Of John Locke s The Cold Soldier And Douglas...
John Locke argues in An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, that personal identity is
contingent upon the memories that people form. In essence, the ever changing body is not a factor
into defining who a person is. The consciousness of a subject puts memory into motion and thus,
creating his or her identity. The main ideas behind Locke s theory are still discussed today.
However, fictional characters in movies prove that it they are inadequate. Prominent examples
include: Neo in The Matrix, BuckyBarnes in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Douglas
Quail in We Will Remember It for You Whole Sale. These characters set a precedence that confirms
the invalidity of Locke s theory as their identities are not based their continuous... Show more

However, the extensive abilities Neo acquired in the Matrix, most notably the ability to dodge
bullets, proves that he lives, thinks, and occupies his body in the Matrix. This evidence suggests
that the body more than just a framework for memories. It also makes his experiences tangible,
by providing a gateway to perceive the world around him. Neo has a more intimate connection to
his body than Locke s theory articulates, and precluding it causes detriment to his personal
identity. Neo s experience with his new body in the Matrix is immense. As he syncs into his new
body, he immediately grasps the sense of how it operates when Cypher uploads presets of
knowledge into brain. He is unsurprised by his body s instant mastery of martial arts and rashly
challenges Morpheus in a sparring match. Any blind jump into a recently learned task would prove
disorientating and frustrating. However, this is not the case, as Neo effortlessly displays adept
fighting skills and eventually defeats Morpheus. Additionally, he requires no training wheels to
adjust to any other task he performs within the Matrix. This challenges the legitimacy of Locke s
theory as Neo s subjective consciousness interprets a new method of how to direct himself in the
Matrix. In the final scene, Trinity s love resurrects Neo, signifying that the body plays an integral
part in constructing personal identity. Trinity s love, along with the

Social Injustice In Richard Wright s Native Son
During the summer of 2015, I had an opportunity to read a book for my AP English class. The
book named Native Son by Richard Wright is listed as among the top 100 books by the
American Library Association. Native Son by Richard Wright was written in 1940. The
protagonist in the story is a 20 year old named Bigger Thomas, a black boy; who lives in a poor
area on Chicago s South Side in the 1930s. My examination and analysis of this book is that this
book is about symbolism and the pessimistic views of Bigger and this is effectively depicted by
the relationships between black and white people during the depression era. This book also depicts
the central theme of social injustice that was prevalent during those times. In the... Show more

With a threat to the black community, political power may rise to a higher extent, making the
population double the violence of chaos and corruption. A sense of courage is needed to eradicate
violence and to end the influence of whites dominating black communities. The New York Times
article explains more in depth about how the black rights matter movement contributed to the
complexities of black political culture and how urban naturalism can be changed for a greater
extent. Life has value, but death is not simply another thing that happens to human beings. Bigger
s attitude gradually changes from not having a true meaning of life to having a true meaning of
life. Reference to Elle Hearn s quote, who is a strategic adviser, said that, It s not just about
changing laws, hearts, and minds, it s about actually changing action. From his perspective, he
actually means to change the course of humanity for the better. In the novel, Bigger realizes that an
action of changing life s meaning into something better helped him to change his own life.
Although he couldn t acknowledge that he was an educated person, he still had the time to correct
his mistakes and to put off death by living for others. The importance of the book and the article
helped to draw attention to the main theme, which is reflecting the behavior of the white society
and revealing its true meaning. For Bigger, his social attitudes and beliefs prevented him from
taking opportunities for advancement. Therefore, we all need to be ready to support ourselves and
prevent racial tensions from happening. The influence of the blacks has had a great effect on their
political culture and their way of expressing themselves to the urban

most destructive volcanic eruption in history. Briefly succeeding a magnitude 5.1 earthquake, an
enormous slab of Mount St. Helens northern flank collapsed in a massive debris avalanche. This

rock fragments blasted through the side of the mountain (USDA, 2005). The lateral blast

Helens will occur. The main issue is that it is impossible to prevent it, or stop it once an eruption
has begun. However, procedures can be established to reduce the lives lost or damage to property
should a future event occur. Technology for monitoring volcanoes has advanced dramatically over
the last 36 years. The seismometers used in 1980 are prehistoric compared to todays equipment.
Nowadays, seismometers can hear low frequency indications of fluid moving deep below the Earth

can monitor and detect gases rising from volcanos summits. Remote monitoring equipment is used
24 hours a day and 365 days a year by the USGS (USGS, 2014). With that regard, the success of a

write poems and stories. He was also very interested in acting and the theater and actually became
a professional actor. Although he loved acting he never gained an important role or got the big
carrier he wanted. He does a lot of fantasy fictionwriting like the book I read The Neverending Story
. His first book that he wrote was a success. The book was Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver,
and it brought him an award for the best children s book in 1961. He died in 1995 from stomach

The Neverending Story is a multiple plot book. The plots are with the young boy Bastian s world
where he is bullied and reading the novel in the attic of his school and in the actual story where
Atreyu goes on the quest to try and save the empress. The plots end up emerging together at the
end of the book as Bastian becomes a part of the book and is with Atreyu.

Bastian Balthazar Bux is the main character in The Neverending Story; he is considered the
protagonist as well. Bastian is a boy around the age of 12 years old whose mother has passed
away resulting in neglect from his father. He has such a large imagination that he is not liked by
the other boy his age. He is often bullied by the other boys. The day he discovered The
Neverending story he was running away from the bullies when he ran into a book store owned by
Carl Coreander. He finds The Neverending Story and is very interested in it but he has no money
to buy it. This lead to him stealing the book. Throughout the novel Bastian is reading this book that
he stole and gets captivated into it so much that the book starts to seem real. He starts to hear the
screams that were let out and eventually is in the actual book with Atreyu (List of The Neverending

4. Advantages of the Star Network Design
It is the most cost effective strategy for cash strapped businesses with no special emphasis on
security. Sometimes the cheapest design doesn t always translate into the easiest design. In this
case, the translation is a success. The hub will serve as the intermediary between the computers and
the internet (via cable modem). Also, in this case, easy design also translate into easy
troubleshooting of any network problem. The star network allows troubleshooters to isolate issues
on the network instead of taking the entire local network offline. Moreover, the star network
implies direct data flow from the computers (via hub) to the internet instead of the data flowing
through the nodes first. Hence, speed is a benefit of such a network. In addition, because of the
direct data flow methodology (nodes to hub to modem to internet and vice versa), the data is safe.
Finally, the star network allows for expansion of nodes, hubs, and gateways without losing any of
the networks advantages listed on this page. The owner plans to eventually add 7 more computers
to the network. My recommendation is to purchase an additional hub to manage the 7 additional
computers. Also, an additional modem is needed for load balancing purposes.

The Declaration Of Sentiments And Resolutions
Feminism in the United States:
The Declaration of Sentiments
Kyron Brown
History 2010 W9
Professor Pennig
November 26, 2014 Introduction
In the year 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton conveyed to the audience of the Seneca Falls Convention
the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions . The Declaration of Sentiments was written with the
purpose of demanding civil freedom for women and of righting the wrongs of society. The
Declaration included events where women s rights were being oppressed and violated and where
laws were giving special treatment to men. It also included the resolutions they demanded on these
particular cases.
In addition, the Declaration was written due to the fact that women in all parts of the globe were
being oppressed for many years. The women in many countries, just like in the United States of
America, were given a limited set of rights in the society compared to their male counterparts. One
great example of this was the women s suffrage in the United States, which was not inherently given
to them until its national enactment in the year 1920.
Analysis
The document was specifically written for women and the events that revolved around their poor
conditions in the past. It was also evident that one of its objectives was to promote and endorse
feminism. This was due to the fact that women in America were being oppressed up until the mid
20th century. As Martha C. Wright indicated, the American women at the time, specifically the
wives,

The Film Shawshank Redemption By Frank Darabont Essay
In the Film Shawshank Redemption (1994) directed by Frank Darabont, Andy was wrongfully
convicted of killing his wife and is shipped off to Shawshank prison. The prison is run by Warden
Norton who is a corrupt leader. When Andy first arrives at the prison he is very timid and shy. As
the film progresses, Andy breaks out of his shell and starts building relationships with Red and the
other prisoners. Throughout the film we learn that Andy is an ex banker who Norton enlist to help
him with his taxes and balancing the books. Soon enough Andy realizes that Norton was laundering
money. The movie displays many of the concepts that we have learned throughout Organizational
Behavior textbook written by Cohen Et Al. Throughout the paper I will be talking about how
Shawshank Redemptionrelates to the concepts we have learned in the textbook specifically in
chapter 8 and 10.
Chapter eight of the Organizational Textbook talks about personal systems. In Shawshank each
character had their own personal systems (Cohen Et Al pg. 172). (Appendix A) Andy had strong
values. He believed in building strong relationships and was very generous towards the other
prisoners. One example of this is when Andy decided to help some prisoners get there high school
diploma / GED ( Darabot, 1994). Andy had a strong belief for education and thought it was
important for his fellow prisoners to have an equal chance of getting there diploma. He also
believed in bettering the Shawshank library. In the movie

Numericus Sphaericus Essay
Lysinibacillus sphaericus (formerly Bacillus sphaericus) has been used as an alternative strategy
to control mosquito s population because it is harmless to humans and other non target
organisms. Extensive studies have demonstrated the larvicidal activity of the binary toxin, which
is the core of the bacterium s toxicity. Binary toxin is produces as parasporal crystals during
sporulation, and specifically binds to a single class of receptors, О± glucosidases, in larvae
midgut. Because L. sphaericus toxicity is based on only one kind of toxin, high level resistance
against the bacterium was observed in the field [1]. One of approaches to manage binary toxin
resistance is the utilization of binary toxin in combination with other mosquitocidal toxins, among
those are toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis, and from B. sphaericus itself. Beside the spore
associated binary toxin crystals, B. sphaericus also produces soluble mosquitocidal toxins Mtx1,
Mtx2 and Mtx3 during vegetative growth, whose applications have not been as thoroughly explored

action as pore forming toxin [2]. The mtx2 gene encodes a 31.8 kDa protein which is moderately

acid at position 224 where lysine and threonine renders toxicity towards Culex and Aedes larvae,
respectively [4]. Study of truncated Mtx2 proteins showed that amino acid position 23 26 in the N

The Military Decision Making Process Essay
The Military Decision Making Process (MDMP) is an analytical and deliberate process that
commanders follow using seven steps that includes the receipt of the mission, mission analysis,
course of action development, course of action analysis, course of action comparison, course of
action approval and orders production. The MDMP gives leaders a thorough process to follow that
provides clarity and synchronization for operations even under time constrained environments. We
need an Army that is trained on making decisions, able to anticipate needs and able to be proactive
in accomplishing tasks even when unexpected duties arise. The MDMP sets the Army up for
success in getting to this point. Without the MDMP, leaders will struggle to make crucial decisions
and they will certainly struggle to make them under pressure during time sensitive missions.
Not just our own history but the history of other countries has shown that running military
operations without planning properly can result in inconceivable losses. At the National Defense
Executive Reserve Conference on November 14, 1957, Dwight D. Eisenhower was quoted as
stating: I heard long ago in the Army: plans are worthless, but planning is everything. The
MDMP is a single, established, and proven analytical process (US Department of the Army,
1997). The process is crucial to our success not just because of the course of action (COA)
developed out of it but more so because of what we learn out of the process along the way.

The Fall Of Byzantium And The Byzantine Empire
The Byzantine Empire was the continuation of the Roman Empire in the Greek speaking, eastern
part of the Mediterranean. Christian in nature, it was perennially at war with the Muslims,
Flourishing during the reign of the Macedonian emperors, its demise was the consequence of
attacks by Seljuk Turks, Crusaders, and Ottoman Turks.
Byzantium was the name of a small, but important town at the Bosphorus, the strait which connects
the Sea of Marmara and the Aegean to the Black Sea, and separates the continents of Europe and
Asia. In Greek times the town was at the frontier between the Greek and the Persian world. In the
fourth century BCE, Alexander the Great made both worlds part of his Hellenistic universe, and
later Byzantium became a town of growing importance within the Roman Empire.
By the third century CE, the Romans had many thousands of miles of border to defend. Growing
pressure caused a crisis, especially in the Danube/Balkan area, where the Goths violated the
borders. In the East, the Sasanian Persians transgressed the frontiers along the Euphrates and
Tigris. The emperor Constantine the Great (reign 306 337 CE) was one of the first to realize the
impossibility of managing the empire s problems from distant Rome.
So, in 330 CE Constantine decided to make Byzantium, which he had refounded a couple of years
before and named after himself, his new residence. Constantinople lay halfway between the Balkan
and the Euphrates, and not too far from the immense wealth and

James Baldwin’s Critique of the Social Condition Essay
James Baldwin s Critique of the Social Condition James Baldwin was an African American
writer who, through his own personal experiences and life, addressed issues such as race,
sexuality, and the American identity. Notes of a Native Son is one of many essays that Baldwin
wrote during his lifetime. Within this essay, Baldwin talks about when his father died and the
events that revolved around it. His father s death occurs in the early 1940s, where oppression and
racism were still fairly prevalent in many cities across the nation. So amidst the events that revolve

Immediately after the sentence, Baldwin describes the racial tension that exists between the
African Americans and the Whites. The people of Harlem as well as other cities are waiting for
that one injustice or catalyst that will push their tolerance over the top and lead them to
violently fight back through riot and protest. In one sentence, Baldwin manages to switch gears,
from one that is very private to a description of the general feeling felt among the people living in
Harlem. Baldwin, being a part of the community, takes his own feelings of waiting and applies it
to a general picture, where a lot of people were in fact waiting as well. Baldwin continues on and
says that blacks were being oppressed everywhere. ...Negro girls who set upon a white girl in the
subway because...she was stepping on their toes. Indeed she was, all over the nation (73). Not
only does this portray the ever growing tension felt among African Americans in a certain area, it
expresses the tension felt across the nation. African Americans everywhere were still continuously
looked down upon, causing agitation, which was the current social condition blacks and whites
faced. Soon after, the catalyst that ignites riots in Harlem, which was foreshadowed earlier in the
essay, takes place. The riots begins when a rumor spread claiming that a white police officer shot a
black soldier in the back, which wasn t the truth at all (81). The way

with each other. When looking at the acting of Rick, his voice looks calm and his face looks at
ease. This suggests that people cannot get to him (get in his head, or persuade him). This scene
has huge importance since people can implicitly assume that Rick does not take sides, and only
cares about himself. By looking at the color of costumes between Rick and the German man
indicates that Rick is good based on his white tuxedo, and the other man is not (he is wearing

A Brief Look at Climate Change
The global climate system is complex and its response to future anthropogenic greenhouse gases
and to climate change adaptation, is often poorly understood. Climate change is an area where
modeling in the framework of complex adaptive systems can improve our knowledge both with
respect to the internal structure and adaptive mechanisms of climateand our capacity for designing
efficient climate adaptation policies. Modeling of these systems includes a dynamic system
consisting of transition equations describing the evolution of state variables characterizing the
natural system, such as CO2 concentrations in the upper and lower atmosphere and in the oceans,
and state variables characterizing the economic systems, such as physical capital and knowledge.
The complex adaptive character of the system implies that the dynamic system will be nonlinear
and nonconvex, will allow for nonlinear feedbacks and multiple basins of attraction, will evolve
both in the temporal and spatial dimension, and will be influenced by forward looking optimizing
economic agents (Xepapadeas, 2010). Moreover, any rational policy choice must consider the
uncertainty about the magnitude and timing of climate changes impact on economic productivity
(Cai et al., 2013).
The majority of the literature, including the recent U.S. Government Interagency Working Group
on the Social Cost of Carbon (IWG, 2013) does not model the stochastic nature of the climate and
economic systems. Recent work, such as that of Cai

Technology Is A Myth
There are a total of 24 hours in each day. How one spends their 24 hours depends on what they
do, whether they work, go to school, or both. Some people complain about not having enough
hours in a day. Are there really not enough hours in a day or are other things such as technology
taking up majority of our time? It is said to be a cultural myth that with all of the technological
advancements we as humans have become dependent on it for everything and it takes up a large
amounts of our time. We spend all day doing what we have to do, but it seems as though there is
not enough time. I believe that it is a myth, and that technologyis taking over and is the reason we
do not have enough time in our day. A myth is something that is neither true nor false. It is a
belief in something, something you believe that is true because it is all you have ever known.
Anything can be a myth. Myths often pose questions of their validity. According to Daniel
Quinn, just because something is a myth does not mean it is false. I didn t say there was
anything mythical about it. I said it was a myth (Quinn 203). This means that he does not believe
the story is made up or false, but it is not in fact true for all. The way It is similar to a theory,
which is basically something that is not proven true, but also not falsified. According to Karl Popper

In Search For Women s Rights
In the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries, women s rights was a hot topic. Virginia Woolf

goal of finding a way to use the limited resources that they have for the good of others. They
particularly use womenof their time period as the major examples in their essays. But it all comes
down to this. Walker in her essay In Search of Our Mother s Gardens agrees with Woolf that
women s abilities were scarce and that we need to look harder for their contributions, along with

What Role Does The Chorus Play In Medea
Discuss the importance of the role that the Chorus plays in Euripedes Medea.
br
br The Chorus is very much an important part of Euripedes Medea, and indeed many other works
written in the ancient Greek style. In this play, it follows the journey Medea makes, and not only
narrates, but commentates on what is happening. Euripedes uses the Chorus as a literary device to
raise certain issues, and to influence where the sympathies of the audience lie.
br
br In the list of characters at the beginning of the play, the Chorus is stated to be a chorus of
Corinthian Women. This draws the first link between them and Medea. The Chorus follows Medea
on her journey through this play. They act as narrators on important occurrences in the play;...

When Medea married Jason, she married herself to him for life. She was expected to be totally
obedient and to accept whatever her husband willed. For her to look upon another man other
than her husband would have been totally unacceptable. Whereas Jason marries another woman
while he is still married, and then it is Medea who is banished from Corinth. However, the
audience s response to this type of situation would most likely have been different in Euripedes
time, to today. Obviously one can t know this for sure, but one can deduce it from what we know
of that era. Although some wouldn t have condoned Jason s actions, many would have seen it as
normal because it would have been a much more common occurrence then than today.
Nonetheless, in presenting these sort of issues in a moralistic play to the audience of the day was
a brave and controversial thing to do. Obviously, the views on the these issues have come along
way since the time when this play was written, so today s audience adapts the messages in this play
to their own morality. The treatment of women, and of Medea, and the circumstances that Medea is
faced with, help the audience to, not condone, but understand the reasons for Medea s actions at the
end of the play.

Comparison of Billy Elliot and Grease
The musicals Billy Elliot and Grease present both conventional and unconventional representations
of gender throughout. Both musicals also seem to obscure the message of the underlying gender
stereotyping issues by overshadowing them with elements such as music, dance and costume.
Men have been stereotyped as dominant, strong, brave and aggressive. Also there is an image of
men being portrayed as harder workers than women and supposedly the more intelligent gender.
Men are thought to be physically tougher, more aggressive, more rational, better able to handle sex
without love, and more likely to be successful at work by virtue of their greater will to win.
(Nicholson, 1993, 2)

However, the music in Billy Elliot seems to confront the issues within the lyrics and not withdraw
an audience s attention from the problems that are presented within this show.
Billy initiates the music in his life. He has the potential to triumph over his environment. The lyrics
of the soundtrack are also noteworthy, as they imply that Billy is a born dancer. (Lancioni, 2006,
718)
He Could be a Star is a song that is sung in majority by Jackie Elliot about Billy s potential at
becoming a professional dancer.
He could be a star for all we know
We don t know how far he can go . (Billy Elliot Soundtrack, 2000)
Throughout Billy Elliot, Jackie is represented as a strong, aggressive and brave character,
however as he sings this song he seems to lack in these masculine qualities as he loses the
strength to keep up with the strike and appears as weak to his colleagues who may not understand
the depth as to why Jackie must leave the strike and go back to work.
Another element of musical theatre is dance, which is evident in both Grease and Billy Elliot.
One of the most famous dances from Billy Elliot is the angry dance, performed by Billy out of
frustration from constantly being mocked and disregarded because of his love for dancing.
This scene not only expresses Billy s rage, it visually represents his childhood. Billy is blocked by

Persuasive Informative Essay
Just the right splash of color of paint can help you get more money for your home, however,
thousands of colors to choose from can be overwhelming. On the other hand, what if the color
swatches were not organized by the brand of paint along with the paint colors not flowing together
to see the different shading of reds, blues, yellows, etc.? What if we only knew words from
elementary and we had intelligent people using strong words that we have never heard of before?
Organization is an important element for life. Without it, life would be a crazy unorganized mess.
For example, when explaining how making a quilt you would not start on the sewing machine, you
would start by picking out the material you would want to make the quilt out of along with the
pattern you want the quilt to look like. It is starting from the beginning and working your way to
the end. Therefore, you will understand how to make a quilt by doing it in spatial order.
It is important when giving a speech for it to be organized and easily understood. For one, it will
make your speech go smoother, second, people will understand you better and third it builds trust.
If you are going to inform or persuade your audience that you do not have to go out of the country
to see clear blue ocean water. Organize your thoughts to make them believe that you can be in
paradise staying in the United States. For example, I have gone to Panama beach located in
Florida and the crystal blue water is comparable to a swimming

The Catholic Social Teaching Principles are a tool to...
The Catholic Social Teaching Principles are a tool to achieve the common good. In the past and
in today s world the common good is short of being what is good for the whole world and has
become what is good for a single society. The Cherokee Indians face the common good of the
United States culture being forced on to them. Due to this they have lost what their culture was
about, along with hundreds of lives. We can see how the Catholic Social TeachingPrinciplesa line
with their past ways, and how their institutes and society have changed over time in the modern
society, while adapting a new meaning to these principles.
The first Catholic principle to be discussed is, Life and Dignity of the Human Person. This simply
means that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many of the speakers made it clear that children that had parents in the boarding schools were
terribly abused. These children turn into adults and did not know how to display love, and have
anger issues. This in turn is taken out on their kids and then their kids making a chain of abuse
within the generations. Not knowing how to deal with the abuse, and how to let go the abused turn
to alcohol or drugs to deal with the emotion and trauma that come from it, and become addicted.
Alcohol and drugs are also the number one way to cope for the Cherokee who have grown up with
no identity too. They know their name but not who they are. They belong to a culture that is
being torn down, and being forced into the United States culture. For a while it was even shameful
to be a Cherokee and some generations could not eve tell others who they were in fear for their
own and their family s safety.
The health care institutes on the reserve reach out and help the Eastern Band of Cherokee s deal
with their identity loss, their trauma, to help them cope, heal, remember and forgive. To make sure
that the treatment is convenient for everyone they have a rehab center, and hospital right on the
reserve. So that the individuals that need help can receive it and continue to contribute to and be a
part of the society.

The Role Of Law Enforcement In The United States
The law enforcement in the United States differs from the rest of the worlds a lot. The law
enforcement in the United State is split up to five different categories: Federal, County, State,
Municipal and the others. All of these different categories have different responsibilities and regions
that they provide their service in.
Federal law enforcement deals with more serious crime and on a more federal level. It combined is
called the Department of Justice(DOJ), which includes the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the
Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and explosives, the
United States Marshals Service and so on. Their main concern lies around the before mentioned
areas, crime investigation, anything related

Negligence In Sports
Negligence is a law that is used throughout today s society as one of the most sought after methods
of suing people and corporations. This law of negligence falls under tort law and is often the most
common legal issue faced in sporting. By defining, investigating and evaluating the issue of
negligence presented in the given sporting scenario; analysing the concerns of various stake
holders, there will be recommendations made that justify a suitable legal response while still
considering the elements of negligence. The above topic which entails the act of negligence on the
sporting field is seen as a more common issue with sporting players becoming more and more
worried about having legal action perused upon them. This is seen as an imbalance... Show more

Where cases that are being fought for compensation through the act of negligence there are many
defences that can be used that are suitable to both parties agreement. Common defences include
Volenti non fit injuria which the voluntary assumption of risk by the defendant; contributory
negligence and the illegality of the activity or act committed. Volenti non fit injuria is a common
law doctrine which states that if someone willingly places themselves in a position where harm
might result, knowing that some degree of harm might result, they are not able to bring a claim
against the other party in tort or delict. Contributory negligence in common law is another defence
used in jurisdictions and is generally a defence to a claim based on negligence, an action in tort.
This principle is relevant to the determination of liability and is applicable when plaintiffs/claimants
have, through their own negligence, contributed to the harm they suffered. The statement of
players in sport unwilling to participate due to the risk of being taken to court for an injury they
may have accidentally caused that might occur during a sport is expected; as injuries that happen
while engaging in an activity of which you know there is risk involved is

History And Culture Of Peru
Peru is located in South America and is about the size of Alaska. It has an area of 496,226 square
miles and was first believed to be inhabited by migrants from Asia in 6000 BC. These inhabitants
relied on hunting and the collection of plants and fruits to stay alive. Small communities were
established by 5000 BC, and the farming of cotton, chili peppers, squash, maize (almost identical to
corn), and beans initiated. The early settlers populated mostly near the coast which allowed them to
utilize the wet climate to plant seeds. Peruwas also one of the first places where potatoes were
grown. The Peruvian cuisine consists mostly of spicy dishes. Chili ( Aji in Spanish) is the most

  • 2. Ap English Short Stories It was early in the morning: Ruby left the tent, bleary eyed, and made his way through the field. Unbound by the decaying fence, the cows had strayed to the far end of the clearing. Ruby hopped the fence and began towards them; knowing the ritual, they stayed put. Now that he had breakfast, and lunch if the milk lasted, Ruby began on the path that lead through the woods. He could hear the larks calling; boasting, he imagined, to each other that they, too, were awake. Besides them it was quite. Coming out into the sunlight once again, Ruby paused and took a look around. Exactly as he had left it. He started his daily chore, picking through the rouble, looking for bits of metal, jewelry, and tools. Despite this having been a miningsettlement, Ruby could find very little... It was in a way, a nice place to visit. Long left by civilisation, nature has reclaimed all but the houses, now standing in a sea of grass. Birds flock to the island, knowing they will be undisturbed. Despite it s small size, it now has a population of deer, who must have washed ashore and made the hard journey from mainland. If it is a short stop, I doubt one would be more than bothered by the bodies. But it made sleeping overnight impossible. Even from the boathouse and the docks, one can see a path of wreckage: lighthouse, once proud, is decrepit, and risks its integrity with a gaping hole in it s side. The main building, moldy and listing, has a corresponding hole in it s roof. At the bottom of this path lies a skeleton, axe in hand, looking up at the stars. Ruby didn t care whether the island was quaint, however. Nor if it was haunted. He wanted to leave because he was bored. He wanted to leave because he was tired of the same day in and day out. • 3. Gasoline Incident An accelerant inside a plastic one gallon container. The accelerant was identified as gasoline. The fires were being set in the early morning between 2 am and 6 am. The homes were all single family, with the fires being started either one the front or back porch. There was a cloth wick that was tied onto to the plastic gallon container. This gave the arsonist plenty of time to get away. There were remnants of plastic shopping bags that were found by ATF in the debris. • 8. Delian League Research Paper The Delian League is a modern term for the group of Greek cities that formed an organisation which was referred to in the fifth century BC as The Athenians and their Allies . The aim of the Delian League was originally to form an alliance for an offensive war against Persia and to liberate the Greeks in Asia Minor from Persian control. Thucydides wrote in The Peloponnesian War , the aim of the League was to compensate themselves for their losses by ravaging the territory of the King of Persia. While many factors contributed to the slow transformation of the Delian Leagueinto the Athenian Empire, a large part of the change derives from Athens leadership of the League and their eventual use of the other states for private matters. The fulfillment of the aim of the Delian League demonstrates the turning point from the League to the empire. The name alone is an indication of Athens power within the League, and originally Athens was chosen for leadership by the other states in the League and accepted as a leader by outsiders, including Sparta. It was natural that leadership should fall to Athens at the formation of the League for many reasons, mostly because Sparta was deemed unfit to lead by the other states. The movie is about a new teacher and the challenges that she faces in order to make the students in her English class, who come from different ethnics backgrounds and who most hate each other, get along. And, of course, by the end of the movie, she is successful in doing so. Racism played a major role in this movie, seen as a negative aspect in the children s attitudes and mentalities. When the teacher asked the class who knew what the Holocaust was, only one white person out of the entire body of students knew. That is when she realized that the students had very little knowledge about the outside world. This greatly related to Gordon W. Allport s theory. Allport was a psychologist who used questionnaires and interviews to measure the strength of individual prejudice, and who found a correlation between higher education and experiences such as knowledge about cultures, traveling, etc, and tolerance or the acceptance of differences between people. In this case, because the students were not taught and were unaware that there were similar cases to theirs, only on a greater scale, they continued to prejudge, and discriminate against each other. Later on in the movie though, because they begin to travel more and gain more knowledge about the outside world, they become more aware and realize that they should change. In addition, three other theorists ideas play a role in the movie. The first one is Frances Aboud, who believes that children first learn prejudice from the media, family, friends, etc, when they are bombarded with negative images. Neo has a more intimate connection to his body than Locke s theory articulates, and precluding it causes detriment to his personal identity. Neo s experience with his new body in the Matrix is immense. As he syncs into his new body, he immediately grasps the sense of how it operates when Cypher uploads presets of knowledge into brain. The Declaration Of Sentiments And Resolutions Feminism in the United States: The Declaration of Sentiments Kyron Brown History 2010 W9 Professor Pennig November 26, 2014 Introduction In the year 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton conveyed to the audience of the Seneca Falls Convention the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions . The Declaration of Sentiments was written with the purpose of demanding civil freedom for women and of righting the wrongs of society. The Declaration included events where women s rights were being oppressed and violated and where laws were giving special treatment to men. It also included the resolutions they demanded on these particular cases. In addition, the Declaration was written due to the fact that women in all parts of the globe were being oppressed for many years. The women in many countries, just like in the United States of America, were given a limited set of rights in the society compared to their male counterparts. One great example of this was the women s suffrage in the United States, which was not inherently given to them until its national enactment in the year 1920. Analysis The document was specifically written for women and the events that revolved around their poor conditions in the past. It was also evident that one of its objectives was to promote and endorse feminism. This was due to the fact that women in America were being oppressed up until the mid 20th century. As Martha C. The Film Shawshank Redemption By Frank Darabont Essay In the Film Shawshank Redemption (1994) directed by Frank Darabont, Andy was wrongfully convicted of killing his wife and is shipped off to Shawshank prison. The prison is run by Warden Norton who is a corrupt leader. When Andy first arrives at the prison he is very timid and shy. As the film progresses, Andy breaks out of his shell and starts building relationships with Red and the other prisoners. Throughout the film we learn that Andy is an ex banker who Norton enlist to help him with his taxes and balancing the books. Soon enough Andy realizes that Norton was laundering money. The movie displays many of the concepts that we have learned throughout Organizational Behavior textbook written by Cohen Et Al. Throughout the paper I will be talking about how Shawshank Redemptionrelates to the concepts we have learned in the textbook specifically in chapter 8 and 10. Chapter eight of the Organizational Textbook talks about personal systems. In Shawshank each character had their own personal systems (Cohen Et Al pg. 172). (Appendix A) Andy had strong values. He believed in building strong relationships and was very generous towards the other prisoners. One example of this is when Andy decided to help some prisoners get there high school diploma / GED ( Darabot, 1994). Andy had a strong belief for education and thought it was important for his fellow prisoners to have an equal chance of getting there diploma. He also believed in bettering the Shawshank library. Numericus Sphaericus Essay Lysinibacillus sphaericus (formerly Bacillus sphaericus) has been used as an alternative strategy to control mosquito s population because it is harmless to humans and other non target organisms. Extensive studies have demonstrated the larvicidal activity of the binary toxin, which is the core of the bacterium s toxicity. Binary toxin is produces as parasporal crystals during sporulation, and specifically binds to a single class of receptors, О± glucosidases, in larvae midgut. Because L. sphaericus toxicity is based on only one kind of toxin, high level resistance against the bacterium was observed in the field [1]. One of approaches to manage binary toxin resistance is the utilization of binary toxin in combination with other mosquitocidal toxins, among those are toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis, and from B. sphaericus itself. Beside the spore associated binary toxin crystals, B. sphaericus also produces soluble mosquitocidal toxins Mtx1, Mtx2 and Mtx3 during vegetative growth, whose applications have not been as thoroughly explored [1].... The Military Decision Making Process Essay The Military Decision Making Process (MDMP) is an analytical and deliberate process that commanders follow using seven steps that includes the receipt of the mission, mission analysis, course of action development, course of action analysis, course of action comparison, course of action approval and orders production. The MDMP gives leaders a thorough process to follow that provides clarity and synchronization for operations even under time constrained environments. We need an Army that is trained on making decisions, able to anticipate needs and able to be proactive in accomplishing tasks even when unexpected duties arise. The MDMP sets the Army up for success in getting to this point. Without the MDMP, leaders will struggle to make crucial decisions and they will certainly struggle to make them under pressure during time sensitive missions. Not just our own history but the history of other countries has shown that running military operations without planning properly can result in inconceivable losses. At the National Defense Executive Reserve Conference on November 14, 1957, Dwight D. Eisenhower was quoted as stating: I heard long ago in the Army: plans are worthless, but planning is everything. The MDMP is a single, established, and proven analytical process (US Department of the Army, 1997). The process is crucial to our success not just because of the course of action (COA) developed out of it but more so because of what we learn out of the process along the way. ... Byzantium was the name of a small, but important town at the Bosphorus, the strait which connects the Sea of Marmara and the Aegean to the Black Sea, and separates the continents of Europe and Asia. Climate change is an area where modeling in the framework of complex adaptive systems can improve our knowledge both with respect to the internal structure and adaptive mechanisms of climateand our capacity for designing efficient climate adaptation policies. Modeling of these systems includes a dynamic system consisting of transition equations describing the evolution of state variables characterizing the natural system, such as CO2 concentrations in the upper and lower atmosphere and in the oceans, and state variables characterizing the economic systems, such as physical capital and knowledge. The complex adaptive character of the system implies that the dynamic system will be nonlinear and nonconvex, will allow for nonlinear feedbacks and multiple basins of attraction, will evolve both in the temporal and spatial dimension, and will be influenced by forward looking optimizing economic agents (Xepapadeas, 2010). Moreover, any rational policy choice must consider the uncertainty about the magnitude and timing of climate changes impact on economic productivity (Cai et al., 2013).
